My Dear People,

A very happy Fourth Sunday of Advent. Our Gospel today is the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth. The mysteries of the first three weeks of Advent converge today into the truth that Christ who will rule the cosmos was once carried in the small world of Mary’s womb. John the Baptist, whose strong voice we heard on the banks of the Jordan River, can only announce the good news of Jesus’ advent by an exultant leap of joy in Elizabeth’s womb. There are no crowds. Just two expectant women, the Messiah and his precursor, and the one question Elizabeth asks of Mary: “How does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”

Our Masses for Christmas Eve will take place at 3:00PM (livestreamed) and 5:30PM in English, 8:00PM in Spanish (livestreamed), and at Midnight in English. On Christmas morning, we will celebrate Mass at 9:15AM (livestreamed) and 11:15AM in English. The 3:00PM and 5:30PM Masses will be our busiest. There will be overflow seating in the Friends and Family Hall and in the parish meeting rooms with a video and audio feed. There will be carols starting at 11:30PM on Christmas Eve and the solemn Proclamation of the Birth of Christ will be sung at Midnight. Please note that on December 25, there will not be confessions nor the Vigil Masses for Sunday.

Recognizing that the holidays can be difficult for many people, we are collaborating with several other parishes in the Diocese for a Longest Night prayer service on Tuesday December 21 at 7:00PM in the St. John Fisher Chapel. The event will also be livestreamed on the diocesan YouTube channel. This will be a way for many to offer up our grief and lament and turn to Christ in hope during this Advent season. I thank all those who have and will give of their time in preparation for our Christmas celebrations, including our liturgy and music staff, choir members, our maintenance staff and our parish staff, and the Art and Environment Committee. Many thanks as well to all those who have helped prepare our church and our Christmas liturgies. It takes a lot of hard work to get everything ready as we celebrate the incarnation of the Lord.

Our parish office will be closed from noon on December 23 until January 3 as our staff enjoys the Christmas break.

In His Love,

Queridos Todos,

A NOTE FROM FR. SCOTT | UNA NOTA DEL PADRE SCOTT

WEEKLY PRAYER

REFLECT

FIRST READING Micah prophesied a Messiah (“ruler”) would come through the line of David (“Bethlehem-Ephrathah”) and bring peace and harmony. In what ways does the upcoming birth of Christ bring you comfort?

SECOND READING As the season of Advent draws to a close, the author of Hebrews reminds us that as disciples of Christ, we must strive to do God’s will above all else. How do you stay focused on such an important task?

GOSPEL Luke is the only Evangelist to record the story of Mary visiting Elizabeth and only a portion of their conversation was preserved. What else do you imagine they talked about?

Consider Being an RCIA Sponsor

The Parish is in need of a few more sponsors for people who are on the journey to becoming Catholic — those who are engaged in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).

RCIA sponsors represent the Catholic Church as friends and companions in faith. They participate with the person they are sponsoring in some of the catechetical sessions, and they stand with their sponsee at the various liturgical rites. Most importantly, they provide a listening ear, an encouraging heart, and a prayerful presence. Being an RCIA sponsor is an opportunity to share your faith with a person who the Spirit is guiding to our Catholic faith – and at the same time, grow in your own faith.

Contact Amanda Bolaños at [email protected] with questions or to volunteer to be a sponsor.

Jan. 1: First Saturday Devotion to Our Lady
