4th Sunday of Pentecost Service of Holy Communion – ELW Setting 2

June 28, 2020

GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

Prelude Take My Life, That I May Be (ELW 685, v. 1 & 2) –Havergal

Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

P Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, whose steadfast love is everlasting, whose faithfulness endures from generation to generation.

C Amen. P Trusting in the mercy of God, let us confess our sin.

Silence for reflection. P Reconciling God, C we confess that we do not trust your abundance,

and we deny your presence in our lives. We place our hope in ourselves and rely on our own efforts. We fail to believe that you provide enough for all. We abuse your good creation for our own benefit. We fear difference and do not welcome others as you have welcomed us. We sin in thought, word, and deed. By your grace, forgive us; through your love, renew us; and in your Spirit, lead us; so that we may live and serve you in newness of life. Amen.

P Beloved of God, by the radical abundance of divine mercy we have peace with God

through ☩ Christ Jesus, through whom we have obtained grace upon grace. Our sins are forgiven. Let us live now in hope. For hope does not disappoint, because

God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

Prayer of the Day P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray.

Almighty God, through your Son Jesus Christ you gave the holy apostles many gifts and commanded them to feed your flock. Inspire all pastors to proclaim your word diligently and your people to receive it willingly, that finally we may receive the crown of eternal glory; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

C Amen.

WORD

First Scripture Isaiah 40:1-5

1Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God.

2Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins.

3A voice cries out: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

4Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.

5Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

L Holy wisdom, holy word. C Thanks be to God.

Psalm 103 Read responsively

1Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless God’s holy name.

2Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all God’s benefits

3who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases;

4who redeems your life from the grave and crowns you with steadfast love and mercy;

5who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like an eagle’s.

6O Lord, you provide vindication and justice for all who are oppressed.

7You made known your ways to Moses and your works to the children of Israel.

8Lord, you are full of compassion and mercy, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love;

9you will not always accuse us, nor will you keep your anger forever.

10You have not dealt with us according to our sins, nor repaid us according to our iniquities.

11For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is your steadfast love for those who fear you.

12As far as the east is from the west, so far have you removed our transgressions from us.

13As a father has compassion for his children, so you have compassion for those who fear you, O Lord.

14For you know well how we are formed; you remember that we are but dust.

15As for mortals, their days are like the grass; they flourish like a flower of the field;

16when the wind passes over it, it is gone, and its place shall know it no more.

17But your steadfast love, O Lord, is forever with those who fear you, and your righteousness is for the children’s children;

18for those who keep your covenant and remember to do your commandments.

19The Lord’s throne is established in heaven; God’s dominion rules over all.

20Bless the Lord, you angels, you mighty ones who do God’s bidding, who obey the voice of God’s word.

21Bless the Lord, all you hosts of God, you servants who do God’s will.

22Bless the Lord, all you works of God, in all places where God rules; bless the Lord, O my soul.

Second Scripture Ephesians 4:1–13

1I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. 7But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8Therefore it is said, “When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people.” 9(When it says, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so

that he might fill all things.) 11The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.

L Holy wisdom, holy word. C Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation

Gospel John 21:15–19

P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 21st chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord.

15When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.” 19(He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.”

P The gospel of the Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon Bishop Jim Gonia We hear God’s Word as it is spoken in the preaching. Silence for reflection follows the sermon.

Hymn of the Day Blest be The Tie That Binds ELW 656

Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

INSTALLATION OF PASTOR NICHOLAS LEITHER

+Presentation The assembly stands. The pastor to be installed and a representative of the calling body come before the presiding minister and the assembly.

Bishop: Having been authorized by the church to install Nicholas Leither, our co-worker in the gospel, as pastor, I now ask for certification of this call.

Council President: After prayerful deliberation, we, of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, have called Nicholas Leither as pastor. I present him and this letter certifying the call.

After the letter of call has been received and accepted, the representative moves aside, and the assembly is seated.

Address and Questions The Bishop addresses the pastor being installed.

B A reading from John: Jesus said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” (John 20:21-23)

A reading from Matthew: Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

A reading from First Timothy: Set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Attend to the public reading of scripture, to exhorting, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. Put these things into practice, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; continue in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers. (1 Timothy 4:12-16)

The presiding minister questions the pastor being installed.

B Nic, in the presence of this assembly will you commit yourself to this new trust and responsibility, in the confidence that it comes from God through the call of the church?

P I will, and I ask God to help me.

B Will you preach and teach in accordance with the holy scriptures and with the confessions of the Lutheran church? Will you carry out this ministry in harmony with the constitutions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America?

P I will, and I ask God to help me.

Page 11: Fourth Sunday of Pentecost and Installation of Pastor ... · (1 Timothy 4:12-16) The presiding minister questions the pastor being installed. B Nic, in the presence of this assembly

11

B Will you be diligent in your study of the holy scriptures and faithful in your use of the means of grace?

P I will, and I ask God to help me.

B Trusting in God’s care will you love, serve, and pray for God’s people, nourish them with the word and sacraments, and lead them by your own example in faithful service and holy living?

P I will, and I ask God to help me.

B Will you give faithful witness in the world, that God’s love may be known in all that you do?

P I will, and I ask God to help me.

B Almighty God, who has given you the will to do these things, graciously give you the strength and compassion to perform them.

The assembly responds: C Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

Preface P It is indeed right, our duty and our joy that we should at all times and in all places give

thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through the great shepherd of your flock, our Savior Jesus Christ; who after his resurrection sent forth the apostles to preach the gospel and teach all nations, and promised to be with them, even to the end of the age. And so, with the ancestors and saints and the glorious company of the apostles, with the choirs of angels and all the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
