    ORIENTEERING

    (Editorial by Reiley Walther)

As the 2017 Orienteering season comes to an end, The Fourways High School Orienteering Team can gladly say that this year they were very successful.

Throughout the term, a number of meetings took place at venues such as Parktown Boys, Heronbridge College, Delta Park and Golden Harvest. This year, Fourways High School had the greatest number of team members ever, each participating in at least one event throughout the season.

The practicing system altered this year, bringing excitement and enjoyment to the learners on Tuesday afternoons. The interactive and challenging practice methods proved their worth and this also saw much improvement in the learners skills. Even the staff members involved couldn’t resist participating in the new system!

The Orienteering Schools League Final was held at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens where a combination of 16 learners from the junior boys, senior boys and senior girls division were selected to represent Fourways High School. The results came back successful with Fourways High having 3 of their senior girls placing in the top 5 and 2 of their senior boys placing in the top 5 for the finals.

Fourways High placed second overall for the 2017 season with 12 705 points behind Helpmekaar who came first overall with 13 083 points. A very slim margin of 378 points separated these two schools.

To finish, we’d like to acknowledge every learner who participated in Orienteering this season, as well as the dedicated staff members and coaches who willingly gave up their time for the sport and the team. Thank you and we hope to have many more incredible seasons in the future.

    Volleyball

Once again volleyball has kicked off to a great start at Fourways High School. The new year saw an influx of over 60 grade 8’s, resulting in the creation of 7 new teams.

The pavilion was filled with shouts of delight and laughter

as the girls learnt to dig, set, block and move around the court in their new found sport. Their eyes grew big on

days when they watched the first team practice as they started to understand how challenging volleyball is. The

excellent results this season come from the intense dedi-cation and commitment of the players and coaches. We

participated once again in the Goliath Cup League and

saw our u19 Girls take home the championship trophy for the third year in a row, beating HeronBridge in a nail

biting final, which went to Fourways in a score of 2-1. Our u16 Girls also did us proud, taking home the

championship trophy for the second year in a row.

The annual Fourways Volleyball Tournament was the biggest one yet with 54 teams participating. It was a

fantastic day filled with teamwork, fun and sportsmanship. The tournament is an international one, with Waterford

Kamhlaba United World College travelling from Swaziland. We also had the French School (Lycee Jules Vern), the

German Schools (From Johannesburg and Pretoria) and St

Vincent’s School For The Deaf participating, just to name a few. We were incredibly proud as we watched ALL our

teams participating in the different age groups. Out of the 12 teams that Fourways had in the tournament, five of

them earned spots in the top three of their age group.

The u14 B girls placed third and the u14 A girls placed fourth in their category. The u16 B girls placed second,

with the u16 A girls placing third in their category. The u19 girls gave us a Fourways final as the 1st team beat

Waterford in the semi’s and the 2nd team beat Heron-

Bridge. The final was an intense one with both teams from Fourways giving it their all to prove themselves. The

reigning champs showed their true grit as they beat the 2nd team in 2 sets to nil, although it was not a smooth

ride. Overall it was a fantastic day with all the girls loving the chance to play games and have some fun. Their par-

ents also made a huge contribution by helping us to run a

tuckshop in order to fundraise for volleyball at Fourways High.

Our girls have also committed their time, family and friends to their sport as they have made huge efforts to

raise funds for Volleyball by waitressing at Greywolf Spur

and by running Smartie Jar Competitions. We are incredibly proud of all of our players involved in

volleyball and we continue to look ahead as we prepare for the biggest tournament of our season which arrives in

August in the form of a tour to Mahikeng. Here we will play the strongest teams in South Africa, as well as those

that journey from our neighbouring countries.

    Go Fourways! SHE’S A WHAT? …… SHE’S A BEAST!!

Central Gauteng Athletics Schools Championships On the 10th and 11th of March a few athletes achieved a first for Fourways when they were selected to represent District 10 at the provincial championships at Germiston. Athletes participating were Aerin Brombacher (under 15 girls long jump), Jada van Staden (under 15 girls 300m hurdles and 400m), and Dylan Middleton (under 19 boys javelin and high jump). We look forward to Jada’s results when she represents the province at the South African Schools Championships in Durban on the 30th of March and 1st of April.
