THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 30, 2016 Dear Friends, One Sunday in 1776 George Washington went to Mass with John Adams in Philadelphia. Adams found himself strangely moved by the experience. He was affected by the images, the candles, the music, the chanting, and the priest’s homily. At the same time, he pitied the ‘poor wretches fingering their beads, chanting Latin, not a word of which they understood.’ Adams displayed the traditional attitude of the ‘enlightened’ elite towards Catholicism: condescension. The prevailing view was that Catholicism was authoritarian, backward, anti- democratic and socially disruptive since it often stood out against the values of the majority population. In the United Kingdom and in the United States until the 1950s there existed a religious common denominator, assumed to be Christian and Protestant. This posed problems to Catholics in particular, especially in the matter of education. In 1925 a judgment of the Supreme Court held that government schools could not exercise ‘a coercive monopoly over education.’ The judgment was an example of the acceptance of pluralism, tolerance, and respect for the exercise of freedom of religion recognized, not bestowed, by the Constitution. Education is one of the main ways in which the values of a society are communicated and transmitted. Previously, those values in public schools were marked by religion; now they are marked by secularism, which has adopted all of the missionary zeal of the religious communities it professes to oppose. The divorce between religious values and public ethics accelerated in the 1950s and particularly in the 1960s. In the past religious faith was seen as a support for public morality and social stability. Now it is seen to threaten it. It previously received the tacit support of governments because it helped to ensure political and social stability. Voltaire, the eighteenth century French writer and philosopher, said that he wanted his servants to be religious since he would be cheated less and his authority would be respected. In other words faith was for the ignorant and uneducated. The ‘enlightened’ ones could continue to exercise their power in their own interests confident that they could rely on the obedience of the little people. Today Christianity, and Catholic Christianity in particular, receives a largely negative press on television, journalism and even in the classroom. It is seen as marked by racism, sexism, social conservatism, endorsing discrimination and inhibiting social progress. Ironically, those who oppose Christian values would claim that they are arguing for toleration and pluralism. They have a moral vision. It is just becoming harder to reconcile it with Christianity. In order to achieve this vision, the secular state, instead of being a neutral arbiter between competing elements of social pluralism is regulating large areas of social life, which were previously thought to fall within the decisions of individuals. When a common social vision disintegrates we have only the law to fall back on. What is moral is what the law says it is. The way to change hearts is not to change the law. Getting people to obey the law does not make them free. It teaches them obedience through fear of punishment. As a British philosopher observed: in the absence of a public ethic, “politics becomes civil war carried out by other means”. Fr. Allan White, OP

Voltaire, el escritor y filósofo francés del Siglo XVIII, dijo que quería que sus sirvientes fueran religiosos para que hicieran menos trampa y su autoridad fuera respetada. En otras palabras la fe era para el ignorante y el no educado. Los ‘ilustrados’ podían continuar ejerciendo su poder en sus propios intereses confiados en que podían depender de la obediencia de la gente ordinaria. Hoy en día el cristianismo, y el cristianismo católico en particular, recibe un gran negativismo a través de la prensa en televisión, periodismo e incluso en el salón de clases. Se ve marcado por el racismo, sexismo, conservatismo social, apoyando el progreso de la discriminación e inhibición social. Ironicamente, aquellos que se oponen a los valores cristianos afirmarían que están debatiendo en favor de la tolerancia y pluralismo. Ellos tienen una visión moral. Solo que se está volviendo más difícil reconciliarla con el cristianismo. Para lograr esta visión, el estado laico, en lugar de ser un árbitro neutral entre los elementos opuestos del pluralismo social está regulando grandes áreas de la vida social, las cuales anteriormente se pensó caerían entre las decisiones de los individuos. Cuando una visión social común se desintegra únicamente nos queda recurrir a la ley. Lo que es moral es lo que la ley dice que es. La manera de cambiar corazones no es cambiando la ley. Logrando que la gente obedezca la ley no los hace libre. Les enseña obediencia a través del miedo al castigo. THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 30, 2016 Closing of the Holy Door and the End of the Year

of Mercy On the week of November 7 – 11 (with the exception of Tuesday) Capilla Cristo Rey will be open during the day for those who would like to take one last opportunity to pass through the Holy Door. Confessions will be held Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 4PM – 5PM. On Saturday, November 12, 2016, Confessions will be held from 8AM – 10AM, Mass at 10AM and Confessions following Mass from 11AM – 1PM. There will be no Saturday Confessions at St. Mary. Finally on Sunday, November 13 at 2pm, a Liturgy of the Word will be held for the Closure of the Holy Door of Mercy. Cerrada de la Puerta Santa y el Fin del Año de

Confirmation students are expected to attend class and Mass on a regular/consistent basis. To receive credit for the class no more than 4 absences for the entire year (excused and unexcused) are acceptable. Exceptions to policy may be made only under extreme situations such as hospitalization or a long-term illness (doctors excuse required). Exceptions must be approved by Director of the Faith Formation Program. Students should begin using their Mass Passports this weekend for the Mass that they attend.
