Way back in 2002, Darren Schultz decided to take espresso coffee to people in their workplaces, as opposed to them having to go to a café to get their coffee.

Thirteen years later after that idea, the business is well-refined and established. With an exclusive licence to the Di Bella Coffee brand, and decked out to serve the nation from the back of their Mercedes Vito vans, the business is run on three crucial principles of friendliness, cleanliness and quality.

Now franchising and producing a full range of hot and cold drinks, as well as a flexible variety of food options, Xpresso Mobile Cafe is expanding nationally.

“Our competitor is the coffee machine in the workplace. That’s who we are competing against, and as part of our offer to meet that competition, we’ve added the sale of coffee pods for Nespresso compatible machines from our vans as well,” says Jonathan.

ValueAccording to Jonathan, the concept of providing value

for anyone contemplating the business is always top of mind. “We are all about specialty coffee, and with our close association with Di Bella Coffee, I believe we are best placed to deliver top-quality coffee to people wherever they may be.”

Innovation and ProductInnovating with products to the marketplace, and the

way in which they deliver them, is another key aspect to the business, and Jonathan expands on this.

“No other mobile coffee operation can bring to the marketplace the range of products we are able offer, primarily due to our association with Di Bella Coffee. Our Cold Brew ‘Kick’ coffee canned products, which are lactose and dairy free, our coffee pods, our coffee bean display cabinet for sale of bags of freshly ground coffee, and our commitment to Direct Trade coffee — from crop to cup, where all stages of farming and production are ethically run.”

“As for the product, of course, we have the hot and cold drink range, but importantly our food fits the market it’s in. Firstly, we don’t sell our franchisee’s food. We help

them source quality suppliers for the right products for their market – this means better margins for them, as there is no markup from us. Secondly, our food offer is simple, cold food only, and franchisees can select what their marketplace wants and displayed in a dedicated refrigerator.”

“We also make sure the money taking is simple as well with a supplier dedicated to setting up our franchise owners’ tap-and-pay service using Bluetooth to iPhone with an app to either tap or swipe for customer payments.”

Technology“We believe that the old-fashioned ‘loyalty’ card

is redundant and historic. So we’ve invested in and implemented technology through the ‘Stamp Me’ company app that enables our franchise owners to build a database of customers and to send push messages to them with offers and the like.”

The VanBeing a mobile coffee business, the van is obviously

a big part of the success of the business, and I asked Jonathan to talk us briefly through their van set up.

“We use the Mercedes Benz Vito, a 3-seat, automatic diesel van. We chose this, as it is safe, reliable and comfortable, as well as being of a quality that is consistent with our brand. The first service is not until 30,000 km, and the power source for the machinery is a combination gas/inverter/battery power, so there is no need to plug into power at an event. All of this makes operation easier and keeps ongoing costs down.”

Getting StartedHow you go from no experience in any business

to owning and running one is a big step, so Jonathan explained how they do this at Xpresso Mobile Cafe.

“Over 3 weeks, we train you fully in every aspect of the business operation itself such as coffee, technical details and marketing, etc., and no specific experience is necessary. However, having a customer service or sales background is ideal, as you are the face of your business for sure.”

“A major part of the training is implementation out on the road together where we help build your key Monday-to-Friday business, and you also have the ability to do events anywhere as well. We give big territories to our franchisees, as well as a marketing pack that includes the 1300 number for central bookings, website, tables, chairs, umbrella, breeze barrier as well as a fully integrated social media management system using Facebook and Twitter.”

Winners Announced for the Roy Morgan Customer Satisfaction Awards

Roy Morgan Research, Australia’s best known and longest established market research and public opinion survey company, recently held the annual Roy Morgan Customer Satisfaction

Awards and announced the retail category winners for 2014, representing fields as diverse as fashion, auto parts, shoes, books, supermarkets and service stations (to name just a few).

A mix of repeat and first-time winners was honoured for achieving consistently high levels of customer satisfaction throughout 2014. Michel’s Patisserie (Coffee Shop of the Year) and The Good Guys (Furniture/Electrical Store of the Year) triumphed for the fourth consecutive year. Guardian and The Reject Shop made it three in a row as Chemist/Pharmacy of the Year and Discount Variety Store of the Year, respectively. David Jones celebrated its first Department Store of the Year Award since 2011. True Value took out the coveted Hardware Store of the Year Award for the first time. The year 2014 was big for Target Australia: not only did it collaborate with Italian fashion giant Missoni, but it also took out its very first Discount Department Store of the Year title.

Warren Wilmot is the New FCA Chairman of the Board

Following the end of his two-year term, Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) outgoing Chairman Michael Paul announces that he will be replaced by Warren Wilmot as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Warren is the CEO of 7-Eleven Stores and has a long history in Australian franchising and with the FCA. His experience also includes being a director of the Australian Association of Convenience Stores and one of the three international directors on the Board of the National Association of Convenience Stores in the United States. Warren’s experience, passion, insight and leadership as Chairman will be incredibly valuable to the FCA and its members, as the organisation pursues its mission of promoting, enhancing and protecting Australian franchising and creating opportunities and rewards for both franchisors and franchisees.

The directors have also elected both Michael Paul and Jason Gehrke as Deputy Chairmen to ably assist Warren in his new role.

Politics, ego battles and inconsistency. Starting today, changing direction tomorrow, stakeholders shifting, relationships sliding sideways: all signs you are deeply immersed in the prickly patch, with no way out. And

let’s not forget (insert the cackle of a cartoon villain “Bahahah!”) … Scope creep! Retreat, retreat!

I’m being a tad melodramatic. Yes, of course, there are monumental payoffs when you get through the thorns into the safe inner sanctum of trust when selling a big project into a large company. This can take many years and a multitude of stakeholders pushing for you and grinding your solution in from multiple angles.

But wait, did you hear, the CEO just resigned?! Okay back into the patch we march. New relationships, fresh internal players jostling for position. There goes another twelve months, not to mention new competitors to overcome. Game on.

The patch sounds like a intense place doesn’t it? Well it’s not just one patch; it’s many small patches that create a large super-patch. Each patch has a protector, a defender of sorts. It’s likely the patch protectors rarely communicate with other protectors. All makes navigating the prickly internal workings of a large corporation challenging. And when you do get your deal over the line, there’s more potentially skin-ripping experiences on their way, you can bet on that.

into large organisations, and over half of my clients at BOOM! sell in B2B environments, so over the journey I’ve learned a thing or two about the prickly patch. Let me be frank, I love it in the patch! I have lost skin over the years. I’ve almost lost an eye, yet the thrill of walking thorough the big doors, unarmed and winning — is still exhilarating.

Seven Steps for Successful Selling into Large Organisations:

1Be patient, be resilient.The bigger the patch, the more prickly and dense. A

short-term approach rarely cuts through. You’ll need to augment your short-term objectives with a long lens. When not winning or pitching, use this time to learn and build insight: the company, competitors, market and stakeholders. Arm yourself with insight as you slowly cut through and build cred and your network.

2Leverage relationships.You won’t get far in any company without relationships,

but not just any relationship, credible relationships with people of genuine influence (crucial influencers) who can, over time, move you through the outer layers into the inner sanctum into where the key decisions are made.

3Back the right horse.In the upper layers of management, personalities are

big and often brutal. Your (critical influencers) must be able to not just survive medium/long-term but also play the game and win. Some will lose, so there goes your investment and channel through. Yet, the right champions, over time, will be promoted and push through. Empower them and they will empower you.

4Think big, but nothing is too small.Any opportunity is a good opportunity to begin with,

even if it costs you. To align multiple stakeholders in different areas, you need to deliver results, not just once but across multiple patches to ensure super-buy-in. This will lead to bigger opportunities and larger projects downstream. Get your hands dirty.

5Don’t buy-in, but sell-in.Don’t buy-in to the internal politics. This is not your

business, granted, you have to back the right horses, but don’t overstate your positive no matter how confident you are. Instead, keep promoting your message internally and keep driving the cause with a consistent theme, values and energy.

6When you get your shot, aim straight and deliver.

One false move or failure can bring many years of hard work undone. Don’t over-sell, keep delivering on your promises. Deliver and keep delivering for yourself, your stakeholders and the organisation. Some stakeholders will go out on a limb for you, so delivering helps them and builds cred, and it helps you. Don’t let them down.

7Complacency is failure; keep building.This applies to relationships and also your solution.

People come and go, roles change, business units dissolve, technology evolves, nothing is static. Stay on your toes, search for intel to help you and the stakeholder to grow and improve. If you fall asleep in the patch, you will wake up with a thorn in your ass. This is not pleasant and hard to remove. #BOOM!

Franchising Code

The mandatory Code sets out the rights and obligations of both franchisors and franchisees.

Disclosure. The Code now requires franchisors to provide prospective franchisees with a short information statement outlining the risks and rewards of franchising. The information statement is a starting point rather than a complete guide to franchising and should be combined with independent legal, accounting and business advice. There must also be additional disclosure about the ability of the franchisor and a franchisee to sell online.

Good Faith Obligation. There is a new obligation under the Code to act in good faith. This requires both parties to a franchise agreement to remain loyal to the contract they have entered into. Your conduct may lack good faith if you act dishonestly, for an ulterior motive or in a way that undermines or denies the other party the benefits of the contract. Good faith does not prevent the franchisor from acting in their legitimate commercial interests when dealing with you.

Marketing Funds. There are new rules that increase transparency around franchise marketing funds. The Code states that marketing fees paid by franchisees must only be used to meet certain expenses, including ‘legitimate marketing or advertising expenses’.

Capital Expenditure. While there are exceptions, the new Code restricts franchisors from imposing significant capital expenditure on franchisees (e.g., an expensive refurbishment or new equipment), except in certain circumstances.

New Penalties and Infringement Notices. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has new powers to issue infringement notices of $8,500 for body corporates ($1,700 for individuals and other entities) and seek penalties of up to $51,000 in court for serious breaches of certain Code provisions. These changes will go unnoticed by franchisors and franchisees who do the right thing. However, the new powers will play an important role in achieving compliance with the Code. The ACCC will be focusing on particularly egregious conduct, and as always, we will take a common sense approach to enforcing the Code.

The Positives 3The Brand. Depending on which franchise you choose to invest in, you may be buying into a brand with an outstanding reputation and existing customer base. Here, you have the opportunity to cash in on the hard work of others and, given you follow the system, tap into the already established customer base for your own benefit.

3The Support and Training. Most franchises will come with a support team who are there to make setting up and running your franchise easier. They will train you in the day-to-day running of your business, support you if times get tough, assist you in marketing your business effectively and often visit your site regularly to ensure you are on track. With a franchise, you are never running your business completely on your own.

3The System. When buying a stand-alone business or starting your own, it is up to you to develop the systems for running that business. This includes policies and procedures, brand standards, operating systems and stock control methods. With a franchise, this is all taken care of. With a good franchise, these systems have already been proven to work effectively — all you have to do is learn how to use them.

The Pros and Cons of Buying a FranchiseWhen buying a franchise, especially if it is your first, it is essential to weigh up the pros and cons. The Negatives7 Less Freedom. A franchise can be restricting for a franchisee, as they are often not permitted to sway from the systems that have been put in place. For example, if a franchisee thinks there is a better way of engaging customers or a new product they would like to sell, it is unlikely they will be able to change the system. While recommendations may be taken by franchisors, the system is in place for all franchisees to follow and it can be difficult to change it.

7 Ongoing Payments. Buying a franchise can be an expensive initial cost and that is not where it ends. Royalties and ongoing fees are often paid to the franchisor for the services they provide and simply for being a part of their brand. While franchisees do get something for the money they are outlaying, such as marketing materials and so on, these ongoing payments would often be avoided in a stand-alone business.

7 One Franchisee Can Ruin It All. When buying into a franchise brand you are also putting your trust in the franchisor and other franchisees to run their business well. While things may be running well for your business, it only takes the franchisor to be put in a bad light for things to go south for you. If a customer has a bad experience at another site, with another franchisee, this can impact on your business, no matter how well your business is run.

Undeniably, Todd is passionate about pizza and the opportunity he sees in the market for his 12-year-old five-store business.

In a marketplace with what seems like more than enough pizza offerings, I

asked the key question, “Where is your opportunity, and how are you different?” His answer surprised a little and dictated much of the remaining conversation.

Grabbing his iPhone, he was very keen to answer it by showing some local industry research to me. “The Australian pizza industry is a $3.6 billion business annually and the ‘big 4’ pizza companies only have 32% of the market.”

He continued, “That means the majority of the market is still made up of single-store operations spread across the country, leaving a market that has space for strong brands and concepts with an alternate take on the ‘standard’ offerings.”

The ConceptTodd explains further, “We are the home of the

authentic New York-style pizza by the slice. Our concept is borne out of the small-sized, fast transaction model we see in New York City, which has 1,600 pizza shops alone. We can serve people in as little as 90 seconds, and as an example, on a Saturday evening in some of our locations, we serve in excess of 1,000 people.”

Starting any business or franchise poses great challenges to every entrepreneur. The total amount of money that you need to put into your franchise is a major consideration and depends on the nature of your enterprise. During the

startup stages, your cash flows are often expended quicker than you plan as unexpected costs arise. However, you can find the business finance needed for your newly established franchise. There are many types of business finance available for your franchise, and it can be tailor-made for your specific needs.

Debt Finance. One option is debt finance from banks and financial institutions. These loans come with a payment obligation schedule and a fixed interest rate depending on your chosen terms (either short-term or long-term payments). An established relationship with your bank is advantageous before attempting to secure a loan for your franchise. Debt finance usually requires personal collateral as security, such as your home.

Grants. Another finance option is through grants, especially if you are establishing a technology-oriented franchise. Grant opportunities given by governments
