DESCRIPTION
Piece for three recorders (Soprano, F and C Bass Paetzold) and live electronics. Kronarchìa was composed for the "PRIME project" [Paetzold Recorder Investigation for Music with Electronics] in collaboration with the class of Antonio Politano in the Conservatory of Lausanne. The first performance took place in the "Studio Ansermet" of "Radio Suisse Romande" in Genève on 18th December 2007 by "Trio Flatus Vocis" (Lorenzio Lio - Monica Lopez Lau - Simone Schimd).

KRONARCHÌA – Notes for the realization of the Live Electronics The electronic elaboration was made in real time and it was controlled by the Max/MSP software. The following notes are descriptive indications of the parameters involved in the electronic elaboration and of their modification dependent on other parameters in each section of the piece. PAN Part I (bars 1- 40) In the beginning (bars 1-4) the sound of the two Paetzold recorders is only in the frontal speakers; from bar 5, the instrumental sounds move gradually to other speakers (before to middle ones and finally to behind ones) until bars 17-18; in this sound movement the speakers are added one to others (none has to become mute) and are used in couples, with no differentiations between left/right. From bar 19 until 40 the sound movements are related to dynamics variations in the following way:
Increasing dynamics → circolar movement increasing through the speakers, with random changes of direction
Decreasing dynamics → circolar movement decreasing through the speakers, fixing gradually the sound in all speakers The Soprano recorder, from its entrance (bar 34), is only in frontal speakers. Part II (bars 41-74) The Soprano recorder’s sound is only in frontal speakers in the entire section. The pan for the Paetzold recordes’ part in this section, because of its similarity to the section before, it’s similar too, as indicated for bars 19-40 in Part I, that is with pan related to dynamics changements in the instrumental parts. Part III (bars 75-92) The Soprano recorder’s sound is in frontal speakers until the end. The Paetzold recorders’ sound is in the middle and behind speakers until bar 84, then it moves according to the same indications for bars 19-40 in Part I, until the end.

SOUND TRANSFORMATIONS Every sound transformation is mixed in the speakers with the instrumental sound. Pitch shifting There are no electronic transformation of instrumental sounds in the Part I. Part II (bars 41-74) A pitch transposition (maximum range: 1 octave; ratio: cents) is applied to Soprano recorder’s part, with a descending shifting, in a variable way with relation to dynamics variations of the instrumental part:
Static dynamics → no pitch transpositions
Increasing dynamics → gradual descending pitch shifting
Decreasing dynamics → the pitch low transposed gradually is shifted to the original pitch of instrumental part The transitions among these three ways are in every case gradual, according to the graduality of the changements of dynamics. When in Soprano recorder’s part there are longer rapid figurations (from bar 65), the level of pitch shifting is reduced to have the maximum clarity of the instrumental part. Part III (bars 75-92) A pitch transposition similar to one of the section before is applied to all the three recorders’ sound, according to the same indications of Part II. The pitch transposition is eliminated in the F double bass Paetzold recorder from bar 84, in the C double bass Paetzold recorder from bar 86. Reverberation The use of electronic reverberations for all instrumental parts, with variable levels (dependent on the acoustic situation in every performance), is strongly recommended.
