Worthy Sir Knights, As the editor of the Frank J. Lewis Assembly 0159 I welcome you as our new-est members of the 4th Degree, the degree of Patriotism. July

I was born in Jamaica, Queens, New York. I spent my early childhood in Bay Shore, Long Is-land. When I was seven years old, my family and I moved to Titusville, Florida. I consider my-self an adopted son of Florida.

I am the product of Cath-olic grade school and four years public high school. My appreciation and love of the Roman Catholic Faith was culti-vated at an early age. The experience of being an altar boy and assisting the priest during Mass and other special liturgical celebrations built my relationship with Christ.

My exposure to the Knights came through my father, a 3rd Degree Knight. I was intro-duced to the brotherhood of the Knights and the importance of giving back to Church and Community. Sponsored by my father, I made my 1st Degree in 1986, followed by 2nd and 3rd degrees that same year. I married and began my own family. We relocated to Colorado, where we lived for 17 years with our two sons and daughter. During this time, I remained active in the Knights in name and dues only.

After 20 years of marriage, I divorced and returned to my Florida roots. With God's help, I found a new and happy life. I met my wife, Elizabeth, and began a new career with LTA International. Last, but not least, we found a new and vibrant Parish family at St. Raphael. Elizabeth and I have experienced community, deep friendships, and true examples of Christ's love in the many ministries available - most importantly, the Knights of Columbus.

St. Raphael Council 10157 are among the best brothers a guy could ever have! It is through the activities in which we've worked together that I have been led to my calling as a Sir Knight. After 30 years stalled at 3rd Degree, it was definitely time to make the commitment. Our country, after God and family, is sacred to me. It's important now, more than ever, to extol Her Virtues and come to Her Defense! I hope to do that to the best of my ability with my brothers in the 4th Degree. I ask for your prayers and that you hold me accountable.

As Fr. Ken Leone once said, "No coincidences - only Godcidences!" Such is life - mine or anyone else's. It's been a growing experience, and I truly have no regrets on the jour-ney Home.

It is with great Pleasure as editor

I introduce to you one of your newest

enjoy golfing and travel. Last year alone we visited the Pacific Rim with a week in Chi-

land.

I’ll end this where I started. On those special patriotic Closter days when our small town

hosted a parade, the Knights of Columbus would assemble near our house. No other

group marched as polished, professional, and, in full regalia, as intimidating. When my

Dad passed away, a lovely arrangement from his council graced the viewing. Some years

later, I decided to make the call. I quickly moved through the first three Degrees, but

decided I was not ready for the last. We later changed parishes to St. John Vianney and

now Council 5131, where it was time to finish what I started. Now about our next pa-

Family of the Year 2016 – 2017

John Terrence (Terry) & Judy Cunniff

Terry & Judy will be married 50 Years November 2017, and have been a formidable team, both in the Knights of Columbus and the Columbiettes.

Judy is a former Queen of the Annual "Queen of Hearts Ball"; was on the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women's Board; and is a Past Recoding Secretary for the Colum-biettes. She was nominated and selected for "Leadership and Outstanding Communi-ty Volunteer Service" in St Petersburg.

Terry is a Graduate of the Military College of South Carolina, The Citadel. Terry served two years in the Military Service, spending much of his time in Germany. His Military Training, Love of Coun-try and powerful voice made a strong impression on those who met him.

In 2001, Terry became a Knight of Columbus and he has contributed to the Knights in many ways. Terry served as Grand Knight of St Mary's Council 2105; was Faith-ful Navigator of the Frank J Lewis Assembly 0159; was District Deputy for 4 Years; a Trustee and Color Corps Commander Assembly 0159; and is presently the Faithful Admiral of Assembly 0159.

Terry initiated 4 Councils while District Deputy: St Paul's Council, (St Petersburg); St Stephen's Council, (Valrico); Fr. Michael Finnegan Council, (Clearwater); and Holy Cross Council, (St Petersburg).

Terry was the VA Representative for Bay Pines Hospital Board, and VAVS, (Veteran's Administration Volunteer Ser-vices), Co-Director for 4 years, working with Alfred, (Dick) Anci.

His most visual and moving Call Outs were at the Honor Flights at the Clearwater Airport, welcoming home our World War II Veterans from their Flight after a Day visiting the Monuments in Washington, DC.

Terry worked hand in hand with Jim Hyland, the Faithful Navi-gator of 0159, attending one Meeting of each of the 7 Councils that make up Assembly 0159, presenting the mean-ing, significance and "rituals" of the 4th Degree. And he assisted in making the Annual Knights of Columbus Christ-mas Dinner / Dance the success that it has become.

Terry is presently at the Apollo Rehabilitation Center, regaining his strength after some health problems. He is planning to be home with his wife, Judy, soon, and looking forward to attending the Assembly Meetings in the near future.

Thank you, Terry & Judy, for all you have done on behalf of the Knights of Columbus! You are in our prayers!

Vivat Jesus!

Sir Knight of the Year

Kevin Greeno

Kevin Greeno took his 1st Degree February 10th, 2014 and has moved forward ever since. He has served St. Raphael’s Council 10157 as Chancellor in 2016-2017, and is nominated as Deputy Grand Knight for the coming Year.

He and his wife Dana have two daughters, Kara, 21years old and Delaney, 11 years old. They both spend many hours helping their daughter Kara, while continuing their "regular" job and their charitable work, both with the Knights of Columbus and their Par-ish. Kevin was a Wrestler in High School and at one time was the Light Heavyweight Champion. He is President of his Company, Greeno Paint Company, and Owner of Harvest Motor Sports and Hope Cottages, Inc.

"If you want to get something done, give it to a busy man." Kevin is not only busy, he is spiritually motivated by the Holy Spirit. His "Charity" includes hours of good works, both in the Knights of Columbus and in his dai-ly life. (His Charity includes building a Race Car for a veteran coming home from Afghanistan. If you see a Race Car with "K of C" on it, that's Kevin's Car.)

Kevin was responsible, along with his fellow 10157 Brothers, for 5 new Candidates becoming 4th Degree Sir Knights, this past April at the Exemplification in Sarasota at Cardinal Mooney, High School. Kev-in himself became a 4th Degree Knight, August 15th, 2015. And he has faithfully come to almost every 4th Degree Meeting at St. Paul's Catholic Church, every 1st Wednesday of the Month -at 7:00PM.

Kevin again credits the Holy Spirit in leading him to the Hope Cottage Project. It began when he, Fr. Kevin Mackin and Brother Tom Doyle were working on a Pinellas Hope Fund Raising Dinner. At the Dinner, they met Mark Dufva, the Director of Catholic Charities and they strolled the Pinellas Hope grounds together. When they saw the dilapidated Tents the Homeless were living in, Kevin turned to Fr. Mackin and said, "We have to do better as a community - this looks like a post-Armageddon Camp"

Kevin realized that there were resources, (Engineers, Construction Workers, and even a retired Welder), right in St Raphael's Council who had the know how to attack such a project. He then brought them together for a brain storming session. Together they came up with the concept of using the 20' shipping Containers found in most Ports and converting them into secure "Homes" for the Homeless. They then realized they could divide each Container into 3 separate Rooms with a Bed, an Air Conditioner, a Window, a Door that locked and a Cross, in each Room.

The Cottages are built to meet the Miami / Dade Code for Residential dwellings. The land was a Marshland owned by the Diocese and after the city promised to help financially, the Diocese donated the land to Pinellas Hope.

Kevin Greeno recognized the fulfillment of the 4 Mottos of the Knights of Columbus throughout this continuing Project (Their Goal is to build 50 Cottages, and so far, they have 20 completed.)

CHARITY - Giving of your Time & Talents for others;

UNITY - Working together for this common goal;

FRATERNITY - Bringing the Community, the Homeless and the Brother Knights of Columbus together;

PATRIOTISM- Kevin's next goal for Shelters for the Homeless Veterans!

Jim Hyland, Grand Knight / Faithful Navigator

Brothers All,

I want to take this opportunity to Thank You for having allowed me to be your Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. This has been a very special two years for me. I have been moved by your enthusiasm and continued efforts to meet the goal of the Knights of Columbus in your works of Charity, Fraternity, Unity and Patriotism. And in particular your respect for the Protocol called for in our Meetings.

It is a humbling experience when you stand and address me as "Worthy Grand Knight and Worthy Faithful Navigator". I realize that it is not addressed to me, rather it is addressed to the "Chair & Office" of the Grand Knight & Faithful Naviga-tor, but it is still humbling.

At times it has been a difficult act trying to complete the Duties of the Grand Knight of Council 5131 and the Duties of the Faithful Navigator of Assembly 0159 at the same time. And I could not have done it without your energy, commit-ment and cooperation in everything we tried to do.

In every Organization, Company and Association I have been associated with over the last umpteen years, 20% of the Members do 80% of the work. And often the 80% do little or nothing, not even showing up. You, Brothers, who attend our Meetings, and plan and complete our Programs and Goals, have been my 20% both in the 3rd Degree and the 4th Degree. I thank you and honor you for all that you do for the Knights of Columbus.

I have grown spiritually because of you. You have made me realize how much difference each individual can make in his Family, Parish, Community and Business and how much we, as Knights, can add to that "Difference" in carrying out the Goals of the Knights of Columbus.

My most moving times came as Faithful Navigator in the Color Corps. Along with our Third Degree Knights, we are the visual "presentation" of the Knights of Columbus. Whether at a Corporate Sunday, a Flag Presentation, the Honor Flights, Religious Ceremonies, Corpus Christi Sunday, San Gennaro Festival in Safety Harbor, K of C Christmas Dinner Dance, Priest's Appreciation Dinners, Altar Server Appreciation program or Funerals, they know we are there and they appreciate us.

My most moving role in the Color Corps was and is at Funerals. Whether it is a Priest, Religious, Brother Knight or Broth-er Knights Spouse or Family Member, those minutes I spend standing at the foot of the Casket, gives me time to realize why I am a Knight and time to pray. Not only for the person before me and the people gathered there, whom I often don't even know, but for myself, my Family and you, my Fellow Knights. "Memento Mori, Tempus Fugit!"

And now it is my time to turn over the Gavel to my successors:

Council 5131 Grand Knight - Lesandro "Les" Santiago, Past Grand Knight, Past District Deputy and Sergeant in the St Petersburg Police Force.

Assembly 0159 Faithful Navigator - Sir Knight Wayne Ries, Past Grand Knight, and Waterfront Consultant Realtor with RE/MAX.

Brothers Les & Wayne - "May the Lord keep you strong and courageous, making wise decisions, guided by the Holy Spirit. And May He give you wis-dom and calm so that you can lead your Brother Knights in good and difficult times."

And most of all, SMILE !

Vivat Jesu!

A Spiritual Note from our Faithful Friar Fr. Ryan:

Corpus Christi – Sunday, 18 June

This month, we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. The origin of Corpus Christi

dates back to the year 1263 when a priest, Peter of Prague, was traveling on pilgrimage to Rome.

He stopped to celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the small, lakeside town of Bolsena, Ita-

ly. Fr. Peter was doubting the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Much to his surprise, after

consecrating the host, it began to bleed all over the corporal. Fr. Peter’s belief was transformed in

that very instant. Fearing that he had desecrated the Eucharist, Fr. Peter made the short trip from

Bolsena to the neighboring town of Orvieto, where Pope Urban IV was staying at the time. Fr. Peter explained his

doubts about the true presence to the pope and how the host he consecrated bled all over the corporal. After examining

the bloodstained corporal himself, Pope Urban IV declared it a miracle and established the Feast of Corpus Christ in the

year 1264. The bloodstained corporal is still on display today in the Duomo of Orvieto.

In our day, the doctrine of transubstantiation has been defined and explained for us by the Church in the Council

of Trent, over 300 years after Fr. Peter and the institution of today’s feast. It teaches us that, though the accidents or ap-

pearances of the bread and wine remain the same, the substance of the wine and bread become the actual body and the

actual blood of Jesus Christ.

Clearly explained or not, this doctrine still requires the eyes of faith in order to believe it. Fr. Peter was not the

first person to doubt the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Remember that even the disciples were divided when

Jesus taught them about the Eucharist in Jn 6. They said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” Some of the dis-

ciples even turned away from Jesus for good because of this teaching leading Jesus to ask the disciples who remained,

“Will you also go away?” This question echoes through the ages and it is one that each of us must answer. When St.

Ambrose, the famous bishop of Milan and Doctor of the Church, faced similar questions in his time, he remarked,

“Could not Christ’s word, which can make from nothing what did not exist, change existing things into what they were

not before? It is no less a feat to give things their original nature than to change their nature.”

This is exactly what receiving the Eucharist does for us. It changes our nature too. The Catechism teaches us

how the Eucharist transforms our very lives. First, it says, “Holy Communion augments our union with Christ. The prin-

cipal fruit of receiving the Eucharist in Holy Communion is an intimate union with Christ Jesus. Indeed, the Lord said:

“He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.” This bread from Heaven gives our bodies and

soul’s the nourishment that it needs to live out our Christian vocations. Second, “Holy Communion separates us from

sin. The body of Christ we receive in Holy Communion is “given up for us,” and the blood we drink “shed for the many

for the forgiveness of sins” as we hear in the words of institution. It also gives us the strength and grace we need to

avoid committing future sins. Worthy reception of the Eucharist even forgives venial sins. Last, worthy reception of the

Eucharist “Commits us to the poor.” Pope Benedict XVI taught us in his encyclical, Deus Caritas Est, that a Eucharistic

celebration divorced from love of neighbor, especially the poor, is intrinsically fractured. All of these fruits of receiving

the Eucharist lead us to great communion with God in this life and prepare us for everlasting life with Him.

Like Peter of Prague, we too are on a pilgrimage and in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass we too come face to face

with the exact same Eucharist that bled on the corporal in 1263, the exact same Eucharist that Christ Himself instituted

2,000 years ago. This June, as we celebrate this great mystery of Corpus Christi,
