MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The Community Foundation did not stand still during 2010. Our fiscal year which ended August 31, 2010, together with the last four months of 2010, was filled with positive changes which moved the Foundation forward on many fronts. A physical move to a new office occurred in March. Our new space at 55 Lorne Avenue East (in the Chamber of Commerce building) has ample room for additional staff and volunteers and our own meeting room. It has lots of parking and great neighbours! The move would not have been possible without the support of our landlord, Don McDougall, and help from Hyde Construction which donated the renovations needed to turn this space into a bright and welcoming new home for the Community Foundation. During 2010 we also moved forward with our first fundraiser on January 15 – The Mayor’s Gala – a sold-out event. This fun evening of cabaret, cocktails and canapés was hosted by Stratford Mayor Dan Mathieson [see page 6]. The event was the culmination of months of research, conducted by Bev Rock and Helen Dowd, to help the Foundation raise its profile in the community and strengthen its sustainability plan. Two smaller events were also undertaken – one was in June for professional financial advisors and one in October for Perth County charities [see page 5]. The Professional Advisor Forum helped move us forward in our understanding of how we can collaborate with advisors in helping them meet the financial and philanthropic goals of their clients. The workshop we hosted for local charities was aimed at helping charities move forward and build capacity for their individual agencies and for the community. We continued our collaboration with the Foundation for Rural Living when Paul Thistle came on board in February [see page 5]. This partnership is aimed at helping rural charities advance in their work, contributing to a healthy charitable sector, and also to help placements move forward, adding to their collection of employable skills. Another highlight of 2010 was the commissioning of a piece of art. Two important Foundation goals came together in this project – to help promote the arts community in Perth County and to build awareness of our work. The artwork, “The Colour of Hope” by local artist/photographer Irene Miller was unveiled at the Gala in January and is being used on Foundation note cards, on our grant plaques and on other Foundation materials [page 6]. We are pleased to report that our fund growth continued in 2010 with the addition of four newpermanently endowed funds. We often say that there are as many reasons for initiating a fund at theCommunity Foundation as there are donors and this year that couldn’t be more true. Our new fundshonoured parents, memorialized a family member and friend, continued a life of giving back andcelebrated a wedding. All these funds are permanent investments in our community and will contributeto making Perth County communities strong, resilient and vital places in which to live, work and play nowand for many years to come. All these funds are ‘open’ which means if you share the interests of thosewho created the fund you are welcome to help to grow the fund.

Keith and Frances Culliton Family FundThe seven children of Keith and Frances Culliton – Catharine, Patricia, Michael,

Gerald, Joan, Mary and Tim – have no end of pride in the accomplishments oftheir parents. This pride is particularly evident when they speak of theirparents’ service to the community. Keith’s service is perhaps better known– mayor of Stratford, city councillor, and board member of the StratfordShakespearean Festival and Public Utility Commission to name a few. Butthe Culliton children are quick to point out that Frances was also a leaderin community service in her own right. She was on the Founding Boardof L’Arche in Stratford, the Parks Board, Horticultural Society, Children’s

Aid Society Board, and Chair of the St Joseph’s Parish Council. Says sonTim, “Mom and Dad are wonderful examples of busy people who still found

time to give back to their community.” The Fund is created in recognition ofKeith and Frances’ life long commitment to community service and supports

projects or organizations that involve young people as participants in orbeneficiaries of community service projects.

Ian Garner Scholarship FundThe sudden death of Ian Garner on February 11, 2010 left wife Nancy and histhree daughters and their families mourning the loss of a devoted husband,father and grandfather. Others were stunned at the loss of a good friend,good teacher, good athlete, and good coach. Ian had a positive influenceon those around him, his care and concern evident to everyone he camein contact with. He may be best remembered by the countless athletes hehelped guide through his 33 years at Central Secondary School. He madeathletics fun yet challenged students to be the best they could be. He usedsports as a way to develop life-skills and values in his students. Ian’sfriends and fellow team mates on the Stratford Old-Timers Hockey Club arecontinuing his legacy through the establishment of the Ian GarnerScholarship Fund at Central School. An annual scholarship will be awarded to astudent who demonstrates good sportsmanlike behaviour, is academically soundand continuing in the field of physical education.

Hachborn-Courtnage Fund for the ArtsThe creation and appreciation of beauty in art has provided inspiration since

the beginning of time. Elizabeth Hachborn and David Courtnage wanted tofind a unique way for them and their guests to celebrate their wedding. Notneeding any more toasters they decided to create the Hachborn-CourtnageFund for the Arts. The Fund will support smaller arts organizations whichdo so much to contribute to the quality of life in our community. One ofthe goals of the Fund is to provide accessibility for all to enjoy the artsand benefit from the best our community can offer. The arts aresometimes out-of-reach for families and others who simply have nothing

left over after their basic needs are met to see a play, attend a concert, ortake music or drawing lessons. Another goal is to promote and support arts,

culture and heritage to ensure that creativity and imagination remain a vitalpart of our social and economic life. What better way to celebrate a wedding?

Anne Walsh FundAs a founding board member of the Community Foundation and as someone

who never lost the community-minded spirit she learned from her father,Joseph Walsh, and shared with her partner the late B. J. (Bo) Sibold,initiating a fund at the Community Foundation was a natural thing forAnne Walsh to do. Because of her many and eclectic charitable interests,including children and youth, music and the arts, Anne chose to establishan unrestricted fund which gives the flexibility necessary to respond tobroad and constantly evolving community needs and opportunities. Annecurrently sits on the Foundation’s Grant Advisory Committee and

continues to be inspired by the positive impacts on the people andcharitable organizations that result from Foundation grants. Anne hopes

that one of the other fruits of her fund will be to encourage others to followher example of giving back to the community. She firmly believes in the

Community Foundation’s model of creating permanently endowed funds, spendingonly the income while the capital is retained to continue to give back.

What we do. When it comes to describing what we do it’s really all about you and what you want for yourcommunity. What do you want? How about a community that’sinclusive, forward-looking, fair, creative, innovative, safe, green, orfun? We think there’s one word that sums up everyone’s hopes anddreams for our community... vital. Community vitality is the uniquespirit that flourishes when people believe their community holdspossibilities for everyone. It’s put into action by people comingtogether, getting involved in community issues, and providingphilanthropic support for causes and organizations. Communityvitality keeps us from standing still and provides many ways of goingforward.

Community vitality is something we at the Stratford and PerthCounty Community Foundation care a great deal about. We helpbuild community vitality in three ways:

We work with donors to create lasting legacies and help them planand realize their philanthropic goals, matching their interests andconcerns with community needs and opportunities.

We work with charities and help them build capacity by providinggrants to the widest possible range of organizations and initiatives.

We bring people together from all parts of our community tostimulate new ideas, build participation, and strengthen communityphilanthropy.

We are a proud member of Community Foundations of Canada, the membershiporganization of over 175community foundations in Canada.

From the Community FundIn partnership with the AIA High Fives for Kids Foundation a grant of $1,500was made to Anne Hathaway Public School in Stratford for their projectcalled “Enabling Independence through Acquired Life Skills”. This projectenhanced the school’s life-skills-focused curriculum for students withdevelopmental disabilities through an excursion to a train station and ahorseback riding outing.

North Perth Community of Character was awarded $1,200 for “CharacterWeek” a project to engage the community in recognizing and raisingawareness of the character attributes adopted by the Character Council –respect, integrity, fairness, optimism, honesty, courage, compassion,perseverance, responsibility and inclusion.

A grant to Habitat for Humanity Stratford-Perth of $1,000 supported theHabitat build in Stratford. The Community Foundation also supplied a smallteam of volunteers.

Stratford Summer Music was awarded $3,000 to produce the “2009 PocketGuide”, a companion piece to their larger more comprehensive guide. ThePocket Guide offered a compact, quick reference for pertinent informationabout performances, schedules and venues.

From the Ideal Supply Community FundA grant of $3,000 to L’Arche Stratford funded their nutrition and fitnessproject which provided programs at the L’Arche Centre to improve thehealth and wellbeing of adults living with disabilities in our community.

From the Jim and Laurel Laughton Family FundThe St. Marys Children’s Choir received a grant of $1,000 to fund a “VocalImprovisation Workshop.” In keeping with the choir’s objective to provideyoung musicians with as many and varied musical opportunities aspossible, this workshop helped to foster a love of and skill in creative musicmaking. 

From the Mansbridge Environment Fund A grant of $1,000 to fund a solar water heating project was given to PerthCounty Greenworks, in partnership with Optimism Place. The installation of solar panels at Optimism Place will reduce the energy costs of heatingwater and reduce the environmental impact of generating electricity, whilemodeling a project others can follow.

From the Mathieson Family Fund A grant of $2,500 was awarded to the Stratford Perth Museum to fund twoprojects, “Over the Top” and “Fighting for Freedom”. These projects were partof an educational outreach program for grade ten students on Canada’sunique involvement in World War I and World War II.

THE FOUNDATION WELCOMED PAUL THISTLEThe Foundation’s staff increased by 100%

in February when Paul Thistle joinedus as part of the Rural DevelopmentOfficer (RDO) program offered bythe Foundation for Rural Living(FRL). FRL advances the non-profitsector in rural areas of the province

by building sustainable rural capacitythrough programs such as this one which

places interns in rural non-profit organizations. Paulbrought with him extensive experience in the museumsector along with competencies in communication andproject management. These served him well in hisposition as Community Liaison and helped to move theFoundation forward in its grant program and otherprojects and events that were plannedduring the nine months of the program. Paul can still be seen at the Foundation office from time to timedoing contract work.

Helping Charities Build Capacity

Along with our role as a granter, we alsosupport the charitable sector by

providing opportunities forlearning and networking. In the spring of 2010 we surveyedthe sector to determine whatchallenges were being faced

and how we could help. Thetopic on most minds was strategic

planning. We all know we should bedoing it! But realizing that and actually embarking on a strategic plan are two different things. What arethe obstacles to planning and how do we overcomeresistance to getting it done? What are the steps? And how do we get started? How do we thinkstrategically? How do we turn our best intentions intoa useable plan? These and other questions were ablyanswered at our all day workshop in October.Presenter Ray Harsant introduced his 5 step “FromIntention to Achievement” Model which gaveparticipants the tools to conquer their fears byworking the process in realizable steps. Participantswere sent home with tools in hand to help theirrespective agencies move forward through positivegrowth.

Client Relationships andPhilanthropic Planning In June, the Foundation hosted a breakfast for area advisors –the group of professionalswhich include lawyers,accountants, financialadvisors and estateplanners – who work withclients to help them achievetheir financial and philanthropicgoals. The presenter, Joshua Thorne,Manager, Philanthropic Advisory Services at ScotiaPrivate Client Group, drew on his experience in theprivate sector and 14 years experience working in thecharitable sector to engage the audience in waysthey can enhance their relationships with clients.Beyond the important matter of investment returnsand financial planning, he suggested that advisorscan deepen their professional relationships andretain clients by understanding what clients careabout and what they value beyond financialobjectives. Reviewing several philanthropic planningscenarios he demonstrated how charitable giving canresult in maximizing financial and social capital –and lead to more satisfying client experiences.

Inaugural Mayor’s GalaA sold-out evening marked the Community Foundation’s first event to raise awareness and operating funds.The event was hosted by Stratford Mayor Dan Mathieson (pictured with Helen Dowd and Bev Rock) and supported by area municipal leaders, partners from the local business community and attendees from allacross the county. The evening featured entertainment from the performing arts community – StratfordShakespeare Festival performers David Keeley as Emcee, Chilina Kennedy (pictured) and Paul Nolan andDrayton Entertainment performers Alex and Jackie Mustakas, Susan Gilmour and David Rogers interspersedwith piano interludes by Sandra Mogensen . Those in attendance were treated to culinary delights from PerthCounty food producers and chefs. A silent auction provided an array of select items from the solitude of flyfishing on a private lake to an evening with Rick Mercer. The event included the awarding of 2009 CommunityGrants and celebrated the Foundation’s newest fund – the Keith and Frances Culliton Family Fund.

Art Unveiled at GalaAnother highlight of the Mayor’s Gala was theunveiling of a piece of art, commissioned by theCommunity Foundation. The idea of this commissionwas born from the Foundation’s close alliance withnewly formed Perth Arts Connect – an umbrella groupto support local artists and the arts community. Thisalliance, together with the Foundation’s desire to havea local image to represent the Foundation, inspired theproject. “Yellow,” wrote Vincent Van Gogh, “is the colourof hope”. “The Colour of Hope” is the name of thispiece – a name inspired by this quote saysphotographer and artist, Irene Miller. There was apredominance of the colour yellow in Van Gogh’s work,noted particularly in his sunflower canvases. Thisartwork complements the Foundation’s logo and willbe used on various projects – note cards, grant plaquesand gifts.
