Still independent and family-owned, the company has gradually become an important player within the watchmaking industry. IN 2004

Frederique Constant entered the elite circle of Swiss watch brands that develop and produce their own in-house calibres. Consequently, Frederique Constant became a “Manufacture”.In-house developed, in-house produced, in-house assembled.

DESIGN & CONCEPTION

The designer will translate the idea of a new model into a drawing and then build it, component by component, layer by layer, which in turn will go on to define the manufacturing process for this watch, before launching the prototype phase. Frederique Constant uses cutting-edge computer software, principally computer aided design software, to assist in the watch design and development processes.

DECORATION

Every visible component of each watch we produce is beautifully decorated. Every time the owners of a Frederique Constant watch look at their timepiece, they are bound to feel joy. Much

of the intricate decorative work is done by hand, including detailed engravings, the application of the circular Côtes de Genève pattern, perlage and rhodiage, to name only a few.

THE MANUFACTURE

WORKSHOP • T 1

Commonly called T1 internally at Frederique Constant, the Manufacture workshop is a highly technical workshop, dedicated to the production of our in-house movements. Our Master-watch-maker and watchmakers undertake long and fastidious work, where patience, experience and

know-how are required. They handle delicate and fragile components, and have to be very precise with every gesture. Some Frederique Constant movements are made up from more than a hundred components. Our watchmakers assemble, adjust, and control all our mechanical

movements to make sure everything functions. Almost all assembly operations and settings are made by hand to ensure the highest quality of our Frederique Constant watches: jewelling, oiling, balancing the pendulum are just some of them.

WORKSHOP • T2

The assembly workshop at Frederique Constant, or T2, is a workshop dedicated to all the opera-tions necessary for the encasing of the watch. Our watchmakers carefully handle all the dif-ferent parts that make up the watch: the move-ment, the case, the dial and the hands.

The cleanliness of this workshop is extremely important in order to prevent any foreign matter getting into the movements and constricting the smooth functioning of our watches.

All Frederique Constant watches, quartz as well as mechanical, pass a very extensive series of tests. Your watch will be tested for correct performance, a further step in which our controllers re-test all functions of your watch: jump the date, test time the setting, test winding (if your watch is mechanical) and so on. Mechanical watches with automatic windings undergo a further series of tests that will differ depending on the complexity of the movement: running and amplitude tests, and testing of the power reserve. But if one of these tests does not meet our high quality standards, the watch will return to the production cycle until it, too, is perfect.

THE MANUFACTURE

AFTER SALES SERVICE

All Frederique Constant watches are warranted for two years, parts and labor, for normal use of your watch.The Frederique Constant move-ments, either quartz or mechanical, need to be revised more or less regularly, according to their complexity. Therefore they return to our After Sales Service workshop and pass through the hands of our highly skilled watchmakers, who will verify that your watch works correctly and will check the «mechanics» of your movement.

Only your Tourbillon Manufacture Silicium does not go through this department. In fact, it comes back to the hands of the watchmaker’s Manufac-ture workshop which assembled, adjusted, and encased it. At Frederique Constant, we insist that our watchmakers take care of our excep-tional timepieces throughout its life. Once again, your watch will undergo all tests in Quality Control before being returned to you.

beautiful, high quality watches with impeccable finish. Each and every

detail of each and every timepiece, whether technical or aesthetic, is

equally important.

Right from the conception of a new model, we take the utmost care over even the smallest details and parts that make up your watch, to guarantee your complete satisfaction, in regards to both the design as well as the comfort on your wrist.

Beautiful, comfortable, hand-polished cases, refi-ned and decorated dials with various guilloché in the centre and hand-applied indexes are some of the details we pay attention to for your pleasure.

THE MANUFACTURE

Our movements are also treated with just as much care and attention. Through the transparent glass on the case back you are able to admire the ‘Côtes de Genève’ decorations that adorn our plates and oscillating weights, where some of the bridges have been carefully pearled. The movement components have, for the most part, been deliberately angled in order to break and polish the bevelled edges for an even more refined aesthetic. The watch straps, whether in leather or in metal, are systematically designed for comfort while being worn. Finally, our buckles are finely decorated with the Frederique Constant crest present on every one.

THE MANUFACTURE

In 2014, Frederique Constant celebrates its 10th anniversary of its in-house handcrafted movements. Since 2004, Frederique Constant is delivering timepieces with manufacture movements that are in-house developed, in-house manufactured and in-house assembled.

In 1994, Frederique Constant developed its first Heart Beat watch. The purpose of the Heart Beat development was to show that these Frederique Constant watches were mechanical.

Heart Beat watches have an aperture at the position of the balance wheel to show that the movement of the watch is mechanical.

THE FORGOTTEN REGISTRATION

At that time, Frederique Constant as a company was growing fast but still relatively small. Without an internal legal department and insufficient management attention, a big mistake was made. The Heart Beat feature should have been deposited as a design registration. Possibly a patent could have been secured. Instead, without any registration, first Frederique Constant Heart Beat watches were introduced in the market.

It only took one year before the first Heart Beat copies started to appear. Some competitors plainly copied the Heart Beat opening in their watches. Some other competitors changed the shape of the Heart Beat opening but inherently still copied the Heart Beat feature.

HEART BEAT COMPLICATIONS

With copy Heart Beat watches in the market, it was too late to still register the Heart Beat feature. To reinforce Frederique Constant as the creator of the original Heart Beat, a strategy was developed to introduce every few years new Heart Beat calibres with Complications. In 1998, we introduced the Heart Beat Day-Date, a calibre development in co-operation with Dubois-Depraz. In 1999, we followed with the Heart Beat Perpetual, also a development in co-operation with Dubois Depraz. Finally in 2001, we introduced the Heart Beat Retrograde, a calibre co-operation with Agenhor of Geneve.

START DEVELOPMENT HEART BEAT MANUFACTURE

Internal discussions on the development of new Heart beat Complications focused often on design issues with the original Heart Beat watches. As these Heart Beat watches were all made based on existing calibre ebauches, we were bound by the basic design of these calibres.

One of the issues was that the balance wheel was very deep inside the Heart Beat opening. It would be a major improvement if we could bring the Balance Wheel more to the front side of the calibre, making it more visible. Another issue was that the Spiral, the most important

component of a mechanical watch, was on the backside of the calibre. After many discussions, we finally concluded to develop our own calibre and solve these issues once and for all. In 2001, we started the development of the Heart Beat Manufacture with characteristic bridge for the Balance Wheel on the front side of the calibre. Having the bridge for the Balance Wheel on front side of the calibre enabled to have the Spiral and Fine Regulation on the front side as well, creating a much more appealing Heart Beat design. This

construction was completely new and enabled Frederique Constant to apply for a patent. This time, also all designs were properly registered before market introduction.

CONTINUING HEART BEAT DEVELOPMENTS

Developing and producing the first Heart Beat Manufacture took over three years. It was a major development in co-operation with the the École

d’Horlogerie de Genève, École d’Ingenieurs de Genève and the Horloge Vakschool Zadkine. In 2004, the manual version of the Heart Beat Manufacture was introduced with major success. The first Frederique Constant in-house calibre was born.

Following the success of the launch of the first Heart Beat Manufacture calibre in 2004, Frederique Constant has presented every year an additional version to its Heart Beat Manufacture range. Some features remained constant, such as the signature aperture, perfectly centred at the 6 o’clock position. Each year, however, new design features have been added; the Heart Beat is constantly being revised, updated and technically advanced.

THE NEW 2014 INTRODUCTIONS

The new Automatic FC-945 & FC-942 Silicium Heart Beat calibres, improved in terms of reliability, durability and pure technical excellence. For the past two years, the R&D Department at Frederique Constant has been designing, developing and improving the all-new Heart Beat Manufacture. Now, our company is delighted to introduce its implementation of the newest, most technologically superior materials available in the world today.

BUILDING TECHNICAL PERFECTION INTO A BEAUTIFUL BODY

The Heart Beat Manufacture watches with the new Silicium escapement are part of the Frederique Constant Manufacture Collection. The Heart Beat Manufacture Silicium features the recognizable popular patented balance wheel bridge on the front side of the calibre.The Silicium escapement wheel can clearly be seen through the Heart Beat aperture in the dial, working tirelessly and at the same time creating an eye-catching effect. The new Heart Beat Manufacture Silicium calibre is housed with a case measuring 42 mm in diameter. The transparent case back is another feature certain to please.

ALL FUNCTIONS ADJUSTABLE BY THE CROWN ONLY

The Frederique Constant FC-700 calibre series, originally developed and launched in our 2009 Maxime Manufacture Collection, is proof that wonderful technological advances can be made which are still incredibly easy to use. Over the past five years, our designers, engineers, technical team and dedicated watchmakers have all worked together to develop the FC-700 calibre series. Today, what started as a relatively basic calibre has evolved to the point that the full range of features and complications of any timepiece using an FC-700-series calibre can be quite simply accessed through the watch’s single crown.

This development represents a major breakthrough in the manufacture of luxury Swiss watches, and the FC-700 calibre, which took years to design and develop, will now act as the springboard for future advances in Frederique Constant timepieces.

THE MANUFACTURE

The Tourbillon Manufacture Silicium features a Silicium escapement (wheel and anchor) that uses less power and maintains amplitude more efficiently than a standard lever escapement, because it functions without lubrication.

The Frederique Constant Tourbillon consists of a mobile cage, driven by the gear train, carrying the balance wheel and escapement. Every time the balance wheel receives an impulse, the cage rotates slightly with all the elements it contains. The cage turns co-axially and makes one revolution per minute, so that the error of rate will automatically be compensated while the Tourbillon cage travels through the opposite position.

SMART WEIGHT BALANCING

The Frederique Constant Tourbillon Cage consists of 80 parts. Each of these parts is produced to the highest possible tolerance, with a precision of 1-2 micron (0.001- 0.002 mm). Many of the parts are produced on Frederique Constant’s ultra precise CNC machine in Plan-les-Ouates.

For a Tourbillon to run accurately, an equal distribution of weight is essential. Frederique Constant solved this problem by a “Smart Weight Balancing” structed with a slight over-weight opposite the Smart Weight Balancing system on the main Cage Wheel. Thereafter, a highly skilled watchmaker is able to balance the weight into the center of the Tourbillon cage by adding or exchanging tiny metal rings under the two screws on the main cage wheel. Typically, 8 hours are required for a watchmaker to adjust the tiny rings and balance the weight perfectly for the entire Tourbillon cage.

Handcrafted in-house movementsFully conceived, developed, produced, assembled, adjusted and encased in our workshops in Plan-les-Ouates, Switzerland, the manufacturing process of the Manufacture Collection timepieces requires extensive work, and is done –mostly by hand- for the pure pleasure of the connoisseurs of high quality watchmaking.

With a team of highly skilled watchmaking specialists, the brand started this development back in 2001. Now, more than thirteen years later, Frederique Constant is able to manufacture fifteen different in-house calibres within its Workshops. Manufactured in a limited edition for most of the models, the Frederique Constant Manufacture Collection is the best technologically advanced set of watches we are manufacturing.

Beautifully engraved dials with delicate guilloché decorations, sleek, elegant cases are certain to attract admiring glances. Alligator or crococalf leather straps, crystal see-through case backs, intricate engravings and carefully selected raw materials, from gleaming stainless steel to lustrous rose gold, all contribute to the “wow factor” which this range has in abundance.

Since 2009, Frederique Constant celebrates the legendary Runabout yachts of the roaring 20’s by offering an attractive series of limited edition timepieces named “Runabout”. Frederique Constant has long been associated with numerous vintage car rallies all over the planet, often as the official timekeeper. We have been closely associated with events from China to France with the Peking to Paris Rally, but also to America, Canada and Mexico with the Carrera Panamericana. The company has a long association with Healey cars.

This year, Frederique Constant celebrates the revival of the famous NOJ 393 Healey racing car. The Healey NOJ is, beyond any shadow of a doubt, just such a car. This amazing, iconic automobile became all but extinct when one of the last of its kind was almost completely destroyed in an horrific crash while participating in a legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

The Slimline Collection is a series of ultra-flat models. The fine quartz movements upon which this elegant series of watches is based have a thickness of just 1.90 mm. Dials are finished with a delicate guilloché pattern produced by a complex engraving procedure. Precision tooling, with tolerances as low as 1/1000 of a millimeter, have been developed for each pattern and dial design.
