The works of some of San Diego County’s most talented and promising landscape artists will be on exhibit in a juried art show sponsored by the Califor-nia Art Club (CAC) and hosted by the Olaf Wieghorst Museum. Landscapes of the West opens Oct. 8 and runs through Janu-ary 11, 2014, at the museum’s downtown El Cajon location at 131 Rea Avenue. It houses the works of Olaf Wieghorst, an internation-ally recognized western artist whose paintings have been praised and acquired by royalty, presidents and celebrities. Born in Denmark, the self-taught artist immigrated to the United States and eventually settled in El Cajon. His restored ranch house is a local landmark and sits on museum property.

Two guest lectures will be hosted in the museum gal-

lery during the art show. On Nov. 14, at 4:30 p.m., CAC Artist Member Mark Fehlman will speak on Capturing San Diego’s Nature, 100 Years of Landscape Painting. America’s team came to America’s finest city and

left with a loss. The San Diego Chargers evened their record to (2-2) after shocking the Dallas Cowboys 30-21 at Qualcomm Stadium.

A two-point underdog, the Bolts had every reason to lose against the high-flying team from Dallas who came to town fresh off a blowout victory against the St. Louis Rams.

Returning home after back-to-back road trips, shrugging off a disappointing loss to the Tennessee Titans, the Chargers played tough both mentally and physically in a well-coached, well-played game, and did not give up when the chips were down.

In his opening statement after the game Sunday Head Coach Mike McCoy complimented his squad and coaches. “I would like to start out by saying this was an outstanding team ef-fort. That’s what this game is all about. I’m proud of the football team and coaches. The coaches deserve a lot of credit for what we’ve gone through last week with all the injuries, especially up front. Joe D’Alessandris and Andrew (Dees) did an outstand-ing job and never skipped a beat,” McCoy said.

After a 2nd quarter Philip Rivers interception was re-turned for a touchdown -- mak-ing the score 21-10 in favor of

the Cowboys -- the Bolts got fired up outscoring Dallas 20-0 the rest of the game.

Hats off to the Chargers coaching staff who devised and adjusted an effective strategic game plan and placement of players to offset the multitude of injuries to their team on the offensive, secondary and de-fensive line. Pass rush specialist Dwight Freeney left the game in the second quarter Sunday with injured quadriceps and did not return. Both Freeney and WR - Malcolm Floyd (neck) were placed on reserve-injured list.

Offensive line coach Joe D’Allesandris and his duct-taped O-line missing three starters (LT/King Dunlop, LG/Chad Rinehart, RG/Jerome Clary) staved off a fierce Cow-boys pass rush protecting their quarterback (Rivers), and blast-ed open holes for their running backs.

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers in another stellar effort completed 35-of-42 passes for 401 yards tossing three touchdowns, one interception (on a tipped pass). Rivers has now thrown 200 touchdowns in his career. This was his second 400-yard passing performance of the season.

Rivers found his leading receiver Antonio Gates with ten receptions for 136-yards and the game-winning touch-down (56-yards). It was that reception that put Gates and his quarterback in the record

books. With 58 touchdowns between them, no quarterback and tight end have been more prolific in scoring than this po-tent combination.

Amassing 506-yards of total offense, 181 by Bolts run-ning backs Ryan Mathews 1 9 - r u s h e s / 6 2 - y a r d s , 4-receptions/41-yards, and, versatile running back Danny Woodhead 5-rushes/32-yards, 5-receptions/54-yards, and a personal best two touchdowns.

Defensive coordinator John Pagano’s unit rose to the occa-sion shutting out the Cowboys in the second half, led by the return of outside linebacker Donald Butler with nine tackles. The much anticipated debut of Manti Te’o in his first action of the sea-son had three tackles, holding down his side of the field.

Chargers kicker Nick Novack converted on all three field goal attempts (36, 42, 23-yards).

Redemption is sweet. Ask second week Chargers free agent defensive back Crezdon Butler, who in his first action with the team got beat in cover-age for a game winning score. Sunday, Crezdon caused a Dallas fumble on thwarting their last drive of the game securing the win for San Diego.

Now looking for consistency, the Bolts are learning how to close out an opponent to finish a game.

“But this is just one game.

Lakeside Fire Department

Lakeside Fire Chief Andy Parr met with the pub-lic at a community

meeting held at the Lakeside Community Center, where he updated them on Fire Depart-ment activities and listened to community comments and concerns.

The Chief said that the Fire Department received a positive report card from the insurance services, which is positive to the community in regard to taxes, and has done a good job pro-tecting their homes by cleaning defensible space.

The Fire Department pro-vided a defensible space in-spection, to be followed up if there are compliance issues. Chief Parr told the audience defensible space is the single best way to save a life.

The fire Chief explained fire station, the new fire station on Lakeside Ave, was built with special tax money from the San Diego River Improvement Proj-

Lakeside Roundup of events —ect money. Now that station 2 has moved from Eucalyptus Hills to Lakeside Ave, station 2 and Station 1 are too close to-gether. Station 1 needs to move further south. They are working on a new location.

Logistics Volunteer Group is an all-volunteer group and a valuable resource to the fire department. They respond to fire related incidents and help recharge firefighters with a rehab unit that furnishes water, snacks, shade and other essen-tials to get the firefighters ready to return to the incident.

Audience members had a number of comments and ques-tions for Chief Parr. One of the questions concerned the hous-ing project “High Meadows” in Muth valley. There was a sign site of new fire station near the new project which has since been removed. Chief Parr said the plan for a new fire station was not true. He explained during mitigation the fire de-partment received a piece of property but there are no plans for a fire station that location at this time.

When asked what the State Fire Fee (Tax) the public was told that none of the money stays in Lakeside.

Chief Parr told everyone he was thrilled with the turn out. “We are a big team, proud to do what we do, and can’t do what we do without you,” he said. “From the bottom of my heart, I respect what you do to help us.”

The Monday Night Car Club held their monthly

Business Meeting at the Veter-ans Memorial Association Hall in El Cajon. The main business of the evening was to distribute funds generated by the Run to the Hills Car Show in Pine Valley last May. In attendance were members of the Mountain Empire Men’s Club, members of the Mountain Empire High School Baseball coaching staff, the Athletic Director, Heather Westgaard, and Cheerleader Advisor, Emily Wanger.

Heather Westgaard accepted a check from the car club in the amount of $500 for the Cheerleader program, Jim Jones accepted a check in the amount of $1,000 for the MEHS Baseball program and

Andy Oberreuter accepted a check from the car club in the amount of $8,000 for the Men’s Club Scholarship fund. Andy then announced to the group that the Men’s Club had elected to have an annual Scholarship in honor of Dave Hudson, MNCC treasurer who lost his battle with cancer a month after the Run To The Hills Car Show last year.

The members of the Monday Night Car Club would like to thank all the businesses in the East County and the residents of Pine Valley for their help and support for this event.

For information regarding the club, call George at (619) 440-6168 or visit www.mon-daynitecarclub.com

InspirationThe summer in my rear view mirrorby Dr. Rev. James L. Snyder

I awoke last Tuesday with a strange feeling I had missed something. Not

only that, but I was shivering like a polar bear without his pajamas. I knew something was wrong but to put my finger on it was just too early in the morning for me.

The condition progressed to such a degree I had to swal-low my pride and inquiry of the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage.

So I approached her and said, “Am I sick or what?”

Quick as a wink she said, “Off the top of my head I

would say you are ‘or what.’ Why do you ask?”

I explained to her about the feeling I had that something was missing and on top of that, I could not stop shivering.

“Well,” she said, “you’re not sick and I don’t understand how you could be cold.”

I looked aimlessly out the window and began to shiver more. “It looks like it’s cold out there,” I complained.

My wife looked at me with one of those looks that every husband knows and fears, and said, “It should be cold outside, its winter, for Pete’s sake.”

I just stared out the window at the bleakness of the morn-ing, wondering where in the world summer went. At the

Dear Dr. Luauna — Stay in God’s plan

dear readers,

When we understand the plan of God we

can walk in the victory that has already been won. Why is it many never walk in the com-pleted work that was done at the Cross of Calvary? I believe it’s because of the lack of knowl-edge. A powerful verse to really

meditate on is, Hosea 3:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.”The price of rejecting the knowledge of God is far more

than one can bear. We understand many walk in darkness and may be blind to the God’s Word. I too was once blind, until someone shared God’s Word with me. The eyes of my understanding were then opened to His light, the truth that changes a heart and makes it brand new.

Many even called Christians don’t believe God’s Word. They might believe some of God’s Word that pertains to their blessings only. But when it comes to something that goes cross grain against the desire of one’s flesh, the battle begins! God who gave His Word to Adam and Eve, yet Eve wanted the fruit. Satan deceived her and blinded Eve to the truth. It’s so important we study. We need to know Satan’s tricks or schemes. If not we can become a victim of defeat, and become trapped in a web of darkness and deception.

Satan has a plan. He blinds one from the end result. I want to share a true story of a young woman who came to our church. She was so talented, gifted, and could at-tract people. For a year she was doing great, leaving her old friends and finding new ones. Then her old friends started calling her. She thought she would just hang out with them for a little bit. But in time she was hanging out with them more and more. She was still coming to church. One Sunday morning I noticed from the other side of the building something was up with her. I motioned to one of our workers and asked him to stop her before she leaves. I wanted to talk to her. She slipped out of the building and my assistant didn’t catch her before she drove out of the parking lot.

II Corinthians 6:14 “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?”

John 10:10 “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

Let’s remember and never forget Satan always has a plan! He has always wanted what belongs to God.

Ephesians 6:12 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

The following week, not seeing her in church, I sent someone to check on her. They found her ready for church, dressed and almost out the door, when she decided to sit in a chair by the door. She shot up a bag of heroin her old friends gave her, and that day she overdosed and died. She was amazing, beautiful, and God had a great plan for her life.

Don’t allow your old friends to influence your life or steal God’s plan right out of your hands. Hold on dear saints, God loves you so much. We live in times of great tempta-tion, don’t give in. Fight the good fight of faith.

moment, it did not seem pos-sible to me that summer was over. Is not that the way things go? Just as soon as you get used to something, it is over.

When I was young, my whole life was looking forward, but now that I am old, I spend part of my time looking at the rearview mirror. That is the wonderful advantage of growing older. When you are young, you do not have any-thing to look back to. The older you get the more you have to look back on.

I have a few things I reflect on. One is the memories I have gained throughout the years. Often when my wife and I are sitting together one of us will say, “Do you remember when...?” Then one of us will recite a wonderful memory from the past and have a good laugh together.

One of the wonderful things about a person’s memory is that it is personal. I will not say that I enhance my memories, of course I do, but I will not confess to it. If it is my memory I should be able to recite it any which way I please. I especially enjoy those memories I share with no one else. Because

then, I have the freedom to remember it any which way I please.

In looking back, there are those things we refer to as regrets. I suppose everybody tries to live in such a way to keep regrets to a minimum. I have a long list of things I regret doing or saying or not doing or not saying.

The apostle Paul practiced the fine art of forgetting. He wrote, “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forget-ting those things which are be-hind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14 KJV).

My rearview mirror is full and the temptation is to focus solely on them missing the scenery in front of me.

At the MoviesKirk Cameron talks about new film ‘Unstoppable’

Interview by Diana Saenger

Kirk Cameron began his career in TV ads and transitioned to

television. In 1985 he joined the cast of Growing Pains as the oldest son. He soon found something missing in the Hollywood life, and it was during that time that Cameron became a born again Christian. He met his wife Chelsea on the show and the couple have led a faith-filled life ever since. They are among the founders of Camp Firefly and The Firefly Foundation, which sponsors camping trips for terminally-ill children and their families.

Cameron has appeared in more than 33 films or TV shows including: Beyond Witch Mountain, The Best of Times, Full House, The Comput-er Wore Tennis Shoes, and Touched By an Angel. His films -- Tribulation, Force, Left Behind: World at War and Fire-proof — the #1 grossing inspi-rational film of 2008 — have propelled Cameron to top star status. As producer/narrator for the 2012 documentary Monu-mental, Cameron retraces the footsteps of America’s found-ers to see if they left us some

kind of a map that would guide us back to the foundation of America’s success.

Cameron’s newest endeav-or, Unstoppable, is an enor-mous leap about his faith with thought-provoking topics that engage the audience. On Sep-tember 24, 2013, Unstoppable: A Live Event with Kirk Cam-eron debuted in more than 700 select movie theaters across the country through NCM Fathom Events, in partnership with Provident Films. More than 150,000 tickets were sold for Unstoppable. Cameron was gracious to agree to an inter-view about his new film.

Q. There are some seri-ous thought-provoking topics in Unstoppable. Was there a particular event that led you to this subject?

KC: The most compelling was the death of my young friend Matthew. That sent me down the road of answering the question, why do bad things happen to good people? This is a universal question that has always been around. It’s often a question that atheists and skeptics love to throw at communities of faith hoping to topple their church build-

ings and their faith. If you can’t answer that question I think it prevents you from moving for-ward in your faith and having a deep abiding trust in God. If you can’t answer that question, it can eat away at your faith. Also, it’s critically important if people are going to understand God, the world and how we fit into it, we need a solid base for those beliefs.

Q. Your source was actual scriptures found in the bible, correct?

KC: Yes. I enjoyed the op-portunity to take those stories of Adam and Eve, Cain and Able, blood and portray those as real world events in the same world we live in now, not some bed-time story books.

Q. Did your first inclination of the film change over time?

KC: Yes. Unstoppable evolved through different phases to get to where it is today. It’s always been about the unstoppable victory of good over evil and the light over darkness, but it really fell into place with Matthews’ story.

Q. There’s a boardroom scene of exchanges about if Noah’s Arc will be in the movie, but it doesn’t appear. Why is that?

KC: It was a scene I put in to get reactions from the audi-ence. It was really a poke at Hollywood and the church, and in Hollywood this is really how those sessions go when you’re trying to pitch a story. It was also a poke at the church in how uncomfortable the faith is with the subject of death and dying. Those of us who say that the grave is not the finish line, say that the funeral is the graduation ceremony and the beginning of the best life. We take things involving death and turn them into something they are not. The story of the flood is a tragic story of rebel-lion, judgment and death that God turned into something good. We’ve sanitized that into a happy bedtime story with rainbows in the clouds and dolphins jumping over clouds and that’s not at all what the story was about. That was my intention with that scene.

Q. You grew up in the Hol-lywood world. Was that difficult to take a stand on Christianity?

KC: At times it’s been very challenging, but by design it’s through challenging situations where your convictions are made and your faith is forged when you have to stand on those things you believe in. It’s

one thing to say as a teenager I’m never going to do drugs but it’s a different thing when you’re out at a party with your closet friends who you want to impress and they make it dif-ficult for you to resist and find out whether or not you have any convictions. For people of faith you don’t really know if you have faith until it’s the only thing you have to stand on. And that’s a good thing be-cause it tests and proves what’s real and not. But we know the secret and ultimately; Jesus wins, and overcomes and life swallows up death. That gives me courage.

Q. What age group would you say is appropriate for Un-stoppable?

KC: Older kids and beyond because of the Cain and Able stuff. I wanted to make sure we were portraying evil and tragedy not excessively and appropriately. Because when we set down at the dinner table and talk with our kids about someone who walks into a school with a machine gun and mows down kids or in a theatre or naval yard, these things are so terrible I wanted people to believe that even though we talk about a God of love and redemption, he actually works and moves in that type of gruesome world. Evil has always been that gruesome. Everything from Cain and Able, the fall of Babylon and a 1000 other stories in the bible are not things we would find appropriate for our kids.

Q: What inspired you to start Camp Firefly?

KC: That was an idea that my family had 25 years ago when we were meeting chil-dren through the Make A Wish foundation. We were meeting kids whose wish was to come to the set of Growing Pains and meet the cast. We wanted to do something more than sign an autograph and take a photo so we designed a one week all-expense paid vacation that we could invite six families to each summer to spend time away from doctors and needles and just have fun, meet families like them and that understood them. We’ve been doing that 23 or 24 years.

Q: What do you hope audi-ence members will take away from Unstoppable?

KC: His resounding sense of victory, triumph and hope. I hope when the DVD comes out they’ll have a chance to lesson carefully to the things that are said as all the words

are carefully crafted. It’s easy to say and look around our world at the circumstance today, especially in America, and see people walking away from faith and God. Christianity seems to be shrinking and not expand-ing although it is in other parts of the world. In China, Africa, India and other parts of the world it’s exploding.

I want people who see the film to say, “wait a minute, the world is a different world now because of what Jesus did.” The one that God promised would come and reverse this entire bad curse, has arrived. He crushed the serpent’s head and ascended into heaven and sat down on the throne and given all power in heaven and earth. The temple in Jerusa-lem was destroyed because something better was going on and now there are billions of temples all over the world each filled with the Holy Spirit and the gospel is spreading like wildfire. With this kind of spiri-

tual economy the devil doesn’t have a chance. Death and trag-edy are defeated foes. Christ has already destroyed that and brought life, immortality and light, Paul says, thought the gospel. We can’t lose. We can be unfaithful, we can give up, but the gospel and kingdom can’t lose. All they do is kill us. The gospel and the kingdom marches on in triumphant.

Unstoppable has an audi-ence. The film rivaled Prisoners on the Tuesday night it aired doing an estimated $2MM box office compared to Prisoners $2.1MM. I hope people walk out with a sense of victory, triumphant, hope and courage do what the pilgrims did. Let’s pray for revival.

Unstoppable airs one night only on October 3 at Mission Valley, Horton Plaza and Mira Mesa theaters at 7p.m. For more information or to pre-purchase tickets go to www.unstoppablethemovie.com.

The all-new live show MythBusters: Behind the Myths starring

Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, co-hosts of the Emmy-nominated Discovery channel series “MythBusters,” will be performing at the San Diego Civic Theatre for one perfor-mance only on Sunday Oct., 13 at 7 p.m.

MythBusters: Behind the Myths presents a fantastical evening of on-stage experi-ments, audience participation, rocking video and behind-the-scenes stories. With this show, for the first time, fans join Jamie and Adam on stage and assist in their mind-blowing and mind-twisting approach to science.

MythBusters: Behind the Myths brings you face-to-face with the curious world of Jamie and Adam as the duo matches wits on stage with each other and members of the audience.

One of the Discovery Chan-nel’s most highly regarded and watched series, MythBusters is now in its tenth season. Co-hosted by Hyneman and Savage, MythBusters mixes scientific method with gleeful curiosity and plain old-fash-ioned ingenuity to create its own signature style of explo-sive experimentation – and the supporting or de-bunking of urban myths that we live with day to day.

Adam and Jamie have be-come spokespersons at large for applying science to real life – most recently as hosts of the Discovery Channel special iGenius: How Steve Jobs Changed the World, and have appeared on numerous shows including Late Show with David Letterman, Good Morning America, The Late Late Show with Craig Fer-guson, The Colbert Report, NPR’s All Things Consid-ered and Morning Edition, and many more. They were invited to participate in Jon Stewart and Stephen Col-bert’s Rally to Restore Fear And/Or Sanity and have received the Young Artist Award for inspiring young people in the interest of sci-ence. MythBusters has been invited to participate on a panel at Comic-Con, where their appearances have sold-out four years running.

Adam and Jamie serve as guest editors for Popular Mechanics and were featured on the cover of the September 2009 issue. That same year, they were inducted as hon-orary members into Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society. They are Honor-ary Lifetime Members of the California Science Teach-ers Association and were named Honorary Engineers and Honorary Members of the Francis Crowe Society at the University of Maine. Both Hyneman and Savage were given honorary Doctorates at

the University of Twente in the Netherlands for their efforts at popularization of science.

tion in 1935, the same year the Museum’s Ford Building was built. The Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, in collabora-tion with the San Diego Air & Space Museum, created this special exhibition specifically for San Diego. This exhibition is the only one of its kind in the world. For over 40 years, Robert Ripley - a real-life Indi-ana Jones - traveled the world collecting the unbelievable and the inexplicable. His vast collections, praised as “amaz-ing,” “ludicrously strange,” and “extremely amusing” are on display at the Museum for visi-tors to see. The Ripley’s Believe It or Not! special exhibition is a self-guided, self-paced inter-active tour that is fun for the whole family and allows guests to fully enjoy San Diego’s most bizarre attraction. Admission to Ripley’s Believe It or Not! is only $5 (with general admission) and includes entrance to the general Museum galleries. For more information and pricing call (619) 234-8291 or visit www.sandiegoairandspace.org.
