Borrowed Techniques By: Chris du Toit (Octagon MMA, South Africa)

Very few present day MMA coaches can say that they come from a purely MMA background with no or little exposure to other fighting arts. The truth is that the vast majority of MMA instructors, coaches and most of the top MMA athletes today come from other martial arts or fighting systems, be it boxing, karate, wrestling or whatever else. If I had a penny for each time I have heard an MMA instructor say “I wish I was a pure MMA athlete, like the younger guys today”, I would have owned the biggest club south of the Sahara desert. Coming from a different background isn’t so bad at all. In fact it’s good, very good!

Being so diverse and coming from different backgrounds adds an interesting flavour to MMA that will be carried through to your students, and they will carry it through to theirs and so on. It adds something that is unique to your club and that you won’t necessarily find in another MMA club. Of course a jab is a jab and a cross is a cross, but when it comes to the finer techniques and the science of sparring, it is then that the differences become evident and it is these differences that might just work to your advantage and make you win the bout.

I actually encourage instructors and couches to incorporate certain techniques that worked for them in a traditional style into their arsenal of MMA techniques. It gives your students a certain edge, call it a secret weapon if you like, but it most certainly enriches their game, and this allows them to see things from a different angle while launching a “surprise attack”. So what kind of techniques are we talking about? For instance, I come from a 25 year karate background, and have been in MMA for 11 years now. With the karate we had a technique that we called “tapping hands”. This was a technique used for competition fighting, to defend a combination of straight punches in such a way that it is almost impossible for your opponent to defend your counter punches before they land hard and solid, while leaving you enough time to escape whatever he might be throwing to counter your attack.

I have taught this technique to my more advance students as a kind of experiment, since I love using this technique myself when sparring, and it was key in filling up my trophy cabinet back in the day. It turned several MMA bouts in my favor and I was astonished at the results.

Borrowed Techniques By: Chris du Toit (Octagon MMA, South Africa)

The stand-up game of most of my competition fighters increased from mediocre to just plain amazing. So I decided to introduce more techniques in the stand-up, clinch, and ground games that I have learned from other traditional styles. My students have selected some of those techniques that work best for them and adapted them into their game. They have made these techniques their own and the results speak for themselves. The best part of all this is seeing the surprise on the faces of their opponents and coaches at the tournaments, as an expression of “where did that come from” forms on their faces. Even greater was my surprise to see some of our techniques being copied, name and all, by other clubs and used in competitions, their team mates calling it out by name from the side! This certainly brought a smile to my face!

So whatever background you come from, and whatever style you were attached to, go sit down and think of techniques that can be incorporated into your MMA game. This might enlarge your arsenal, and at the same time you will be building and bettering the sport of MMA one technique at a time! Happy training and remember “Never Back Down”!

To Be or Not To Be: Sanctioned or Unsanctioned MMA Events?By: Jared Williams

Easy question to answer right? Wrong. The sport of MMA is growing at such a rapid rate that valuable information cannot get to the fans and fighters fast enough. As a manager for many contracted Pro and Amateur fighters, far too often I will receive a question from a new fighter that I thought was common knowledge and this helps me remember that information is not readily available. This month I decided to tackle a tough question for some fighters to understand or answer for themselves.

What is the difference between a sanctioned or unsanctioned MMA event?

Sanctioned by definition is an authoritative permission or approval that makes a course of action valid. How does this apply to you? A sanctioning body will be at your fight to make sure the promotion is following various guidelines such as safety regulations and basic procedures for the event. We all hope to fight and have no injuries but what if something does happen? The sanctioning body will be there to make sure proper medical response will be adequate and on time.

Unsanctioned by definition is not having been given permission or authorization. This definition states the obvious but misses some core warning signs for MMA fighters. Think of the possibilities of misrepresentation at an MMA event without proper oversight- here are a few:

1.) Weigh-ins- You show up for a fight @ 155lbs and your opponent shows up weighing 164lbs and you are encouraged to do a “catch weight @ 162 and allow for a 2+ window” and are asked to eat and try to make weight. You don’t know any better and say okay; you eat and weigh in @ 160lbs and the promoter says you are good to go. The problem that here is that your opponent will now walk in the next day weighing 10-20lbs heavier and you may have already gained the majority of you weight back. MISMATCH of a possible 160-165lb fighter going against a 175+ fighter. Mismatch.

To Be or Not To Be: Sanctioned or Unsanctioned MMA Events?By: Jared Williams

2.) Hand Wraps- Here is a situation that can go wrong fast without proper supervision. You get your hands wrapped in the pre-fight and signed off by staff personal. Your opponent does the same but then decides to go walk out amongst friends-family, etc. What if someone tampers with his hands after the pre-fight?

3.) Fighter Misrepresentation- When a fighter is competing in a non-sanctioned bout, the fight does not have to be reported and most of the time goes unreported. What if you are an amateur fighter making your debut and you are told that your opponent is also 0-0 and has a small amount of experience like yourself? Would you take the fight if you knew this fighter actually had 10-15 fights? Maybe but you deserve to know the correct information before making that choice. These are just a few examples of things that could go wrong during a unsanctioned event; there are many other possible issues when fighting in one of these events.

In closing, I want to make sure that I add that not ALL unsanctioned events have poor oversight and not all sanctioned events are perfectly managed. The idea is to make sure you have put yourself in the best position to succeed, to be safe, and have FUN. MMA is a sport that needs to run with guidelines, rules, and restrictions to maintain its growing popularity and state by state support. Please take this article as an opportunity for me to speak freely about my opinions and not a stab at any promotion or organization.

Training MMA .vs BJJBy: Timm Kitts

Most people in the sport of mixed martial arts are learning their grappling game from a Brazilian Jiu-Jitzu (BJJ) instructor. That is fine in the beginning but there needs to be adjustments if you are going make a real transition to MMA. The biggest difference between MMA & BJJ is that you do not have to worry about strikes in BJJ and you don’t worry about things like gi-chokes in MMA. This changes a few things when transitioning your BJJ to your MMA game.

When you start any combat sport your stance is where you begin. With BJJ, there is more of a worry about being taken down so the hands are lower which enables you to get underhooks and sprawl. Your hips will also be more squared to your opponent to avoid single leg takedowns. This usually lands you in the position of holding each others' elbow and collar with a lack of fear from strikes.

Your MMA stance is similar to that of BJJ but, because you have to also concern yourself with strikes, there are some significant changes. Keeping your chin tucked down to your chest will help keep you from being put to sleep by your opponent’s strikes. Your shoulders should be raised to further help guard your knockout button. Your hands have a few effective places you can place them and each school will have different opinions on that; as long as your hands are up and covering something they are in the right place. Elbows should be tight to your body and then you can avoid body shots that will take your wind and bring you to the mat. Legs should be slightly bent as with the BJJ stance. The further you are away from your opponent, the less squared you want your hips to be. This will allow for quicker advances and retreats as well as loading kicks without telegraphing. The closer you get to your opponent, the more you are going to square your hips. That will allow you to sprawl and have more power in your close range strikes.

Once you have gone to the mat, there are a lot of changes as well. With BJJ, you can fight from your back all day long and be perfectly safe. In MMA it is possible to fight like that for a while and it is very possible to win fights from that position, but it just takes one good punch with your head on the mat and the show is over. In both scenarios you are looking to control their hips and upper body. The difference is that with MMA, you are still going to have to keep your head and body covered so things such as reaching to gain control of a leg to secure a triangle are very risky.

Training MMA .vs BJJBy: Timm Kitts

From the top, if you decide to work from there, you are exposed to up kicks in MMA that the BJJ player would never have to worry about. A high percentage of your open guard passes are going to be altered or eliminated. If you happen to be the guy on top, in the guard position, things like posting up to release various submissions will effectively get you elbowed in the face by a quick thinking striker.

Neither system is better than the other; they are two different games with two different sets of rules and goals in mind. If you want to compete in BJJ, you go to a BJJ instructor. If you want learn MMA, you don’t go to a BJJ instructor and then adjust what they teach you. That is a waste of your time and rude to your BJJ coach. Just find an MMA school & learn MMA.

Selecting Your First FightBy: Patrick Mays

In a real fight you don't get to select your opponent unless you are the type that gets off by picking on a weaker person. In my thirty two years of martial arts experience I have learned that there are many that enjoy talking about and watching a good fight. However, fewer will actually commit themselves to train and prepare for a fight. Even fewer will make martial arts their way of life and will be able to handle whatever comes into their realm. Still fewer will be able to put it all on the line and step into the cage for a face-to-face meeting with an opponent for the first time. If you are in that last group you are of an extraordinary rare breed of gifted and talented individuals that the rest of us can only talk about. You are a fierce modern-day warrior, so please give yourself some credit and perhaps a pat on the back. I believe MMA cage fighting is the ultimate evolution of martial arts of today, and the closest thing you can get to a real fight. So if you are in that last group that I described you would not be considered a bully; you would be viewed very serious athlete. Why would anything be much different in selecting your first cage fight. Trust in your instincts, your trainer, the people close around you, and train the body for battle and mentally prepare to fight. I tell my top fighters these very same things. The only things my fighters require of me when going into a fight is who, when, and where. However if you need to know a little more, here is some information about the tactics I use for some of my fighters that are simply beneficial to know. Some fighters really like to find out everything they can about their opponent. Its helpful to know what gym they train in and under what trainer; this may tell a fighter plenty about their fighting style. For example, are they a grappler, are they a standup fighter, and what style of stand up fighter are they. Be selective on what promoter you choose; check their record and experience. It's helpful to know if the promoter is a past fighter or martial artist; if they are, it probably means that they are more in tune with the fighters needs.

Selecting Your First FightBy: Patrick Mays

You can choose a venue on the beach somewhere and combine some "butt" kicking along with a vacation that's enjoyable for you and not too expensive for your fight team. That will allow you to celebrate your victory, or soak your wounds in some salt water, and plan your next attack. I suggest that you get to know the promoter of the event you are fighting in; if he don't answer his phone or e-mails, avoid that venue.

I like to do business with promoters that are experienced fighters and stay away from the ones that are in it just for the money. You can identify them by their lack of martial arts experience. Once you find a venue and a promoter you are comfortable with get to know the fight matchmaker they are using. Often times its their top student, spouse, or someone close to them. These people will know your opponent because they are the ones that match the fighters.

First Things FirstBy: Joshua Johns

The world of MMA is vastly growing and everything in the MMA world moves at a fast pace and once you start you really do not have any time to slow down. The greatest athletes in the world are ditching their sports and joining the MMA world. Since the MMA world is growing so fast, there is plenty of space for you, as an athlete, to move up in this world. Getting started is extremely easy!

I will list the steps to getting started:

Finding a Gym to workout in, finding an agent, and train your heart out.

Ever since the UFC launched, MMA has grown in every direction. Since MMA is so huge now it is very easy to find a local MMA gym. All it takes is looking around your town or a local phone book and I am sure that there will be some gyms nearby! Choosing between gyms may be more difficult than finding them. If you were a wrestler in high school or college than you have a head start but if you weren't it still isn't too late. Choosing between what style of MMA you want to fight is all dependent on you, what do you want to learn. There are so many styles of martial arts out there. Muay thai, luta livre, jujitsu, boxing, and wrestling are just some of the few. All you need is two of those, one ground attack and one stand up attack.

Finding an agent may be a little tough. This is a choice you and your coach will want to make after you have a few amateur fights under your belt.(I recommend four amateur fights) It is very important to not have a whole lot of amateur fights. This is to ensure you agent can get you a good pro debut. You can find an agent in all major city's. Most agents will take a cut from your total purse. The cuts can vary from 10% to 20%. Your agents will find you fights and sponsors and maybe even some press releases, if your lucky! This way you can just work on getting better and ready for your fights.

Training your heart out is easier said than done! A good pro fighter should train six days a week. You really have to get your stamina up. This includes a lot of auxiliary workouts. It may not seem like a lot of time that you are fighting but trust me, it is! It is an absolutely horrible feeling when you can not hold up your hands, in the third round, to protect yourself. It is this simple: EAT, TRAIN, SLEEP!BEST WISHES!!!

Shields’ New UFC Home Offers No Welcoming GiftBy: J. Alex Mattis

On October 21 Brock Lesnar will defend his UFC heavyweight title against fast-rising superstar Cain Velasquez in what could be one of the best fights of the year. But before the main event goes down, the UFC debut of the Strikeforce middleweight and welterweight champion will take center stage. The ultra-talented and highly ranked Jake Shields finally will compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Shields is coming into the UFC riding an enormous wave of hype and momentum. Shields is currently on a 14-fight win streak, which includes wins over such notable fighters as Dan Henderson, Robbie Lawler, Paul Daley, Carlos Condit and Yushin Okami. Shields hopes to continue riding this wave and snatch a victory in his first UFC outing which would put him closer to a title showdown with Georges St. Pierre, or possibly Anderson Silva.

While Shields debut may be looked at as his first step to a UFC title shot, his opponent is someone who has been swimming around the welterweight title picture for over a year. Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann is a true dark horse of the UFC. Prior to his drop to welterweight early in 2009, he was tearing through most of his opponents in the middleweight division. Kampmann shutdown future title challenger Thales Leites, he put the hype surrounding Drew McFedries to bed with a 1st round submission, and was scheduled to main event UFC 72 against Rich Franklin but was sidelined by injury.

Upon his return, Kampmann choked out UFC-vet Jorge Rivera and was back in the mix. Shortly after, Kampmann ran into Nate Marquardt in a fight with middleweight title shot implications. Unfortunately for Martin, he was caught quickly and knocked off the middleweight ladder. Following the loss Kampmann made potentially the best decision of his career and dropped to welterweight. In his second fight at 170lbs he put on an outstanding performance against a debuting star and champion (sound familiar?). Kampmann edged out a decision win over the then WEC welterweight champion, Carlos Condit.

Kampmann was set for a title contention fight with Mike Swick. However, when Swick dropped out and Paul Daley filled in, things took a violent turn for “The Hitman.” The questionable game plan of standing and striking with Daley led Kampmann to his third career defeat. Since the loss at UFC 103 Kampmann destroyed Jacob Volkmann and most recently dominated Paulo Thiago in a fight that was expected to be very competitive.

While the victory over Thiago was enough to put title shot buzz around Kampmann, a win over Shields would all but guarantee “The Hitman” a crack at welterweight gold.

While the betting odds, and many experts within the industry would tell you that the Strikeforce champ is in for a successful debut on 10/21/2010, this fight is a very dangerous one for Shields. The combination of Kampmann’s solid wrestling, consistently improving striking, and underrated ground game (and the always looming “octagon jitters”) make for a fight that Shields cannot overlook.

It’s undeniable that Shields is one of the best submission artists in MMA today. While some may think he is too “one dimensional,” it’s obvious that one dimension works out pretty well for him. But Martin Kampmann is a handful for any fighter at 170 and will help establish Jake Shields’ spot is in the land of UFC welterweights.

MMA Therapy By: Cher Woodiwiss

What is one of the biggest problems with male youth today? Aggressive behavior. If a survey of all the kids in youth detention centers was done, it would reveal that most have violence and aggression issues. They harbor pent up hate and resentments . We provide those kids with a various array of counseling classes and therapy sessions, both individually and in group settings. How much does it help? One great man once said “change happens in an instant, it’s the getting ready to change that takes forever.” You have to make that decision and go from there with a specific, concrete plan. Create a magnificent obsession. Ideas come. MMA has that quality. Once MMA is in your heart, it’s in you for good. It can be a magnificent obsession.

Do these aggressive kids need a more tangible outlet? The aggression is in them. Its undeniable. Maybe we shouldn’t try to tame it and deny it. Let it out in a safer and more regulated environment. Teach them the martial arts way. I know that this isn’t a new concept. Martial arts has always been seen as a way to tame a lost soul. A way to heal inner torment. To most teen boys, .studying Karate or Jiu Jitsu isn’t enough. It doesn’t seem real, it’s a lot of moves without any competition to see how they measure up. That’s why MMA would be the perfect medicine. As long as the students were medically and mentally sound, MMA would be the prefect choice. If the kids were guided and mentored by a man or woman they could look up too; one who taught them to respect themselves, their opponents and the sport, only good things could come from that. Let them get in the cage and train....let them learn Muay Thai with some Jiu Jitsu topped with some wrestling. Once they see that they have the heart and the gumption to do these things, the love affair will begin. This usually prompts better behavior because they don’t want to be booted out of their training. Most clubs I’ve been too don’t put up with a thug attitude. That kind is easily spotted and deterred. Great connections are made amongst fighters and trainers. It’s very easy to feel like you belong to a family when you belong to a good MMA club.

One thing I noticed when I attended my first boxing event at the Brampton cup was the family atmosphere and the amazing sportsmanship that all fighters and fight teams showed to each other. Whether the fighter won or loss, both sides showed respect to each other. That was the first glimpse of how the fight world worked. I loved it, I was hooked. I knew I had to find my place in this world one way or another. This frame of mind is something that exists amongst most fighters. This is one of the characteristics that draws me to the sport of MMA. It also creates a necessary feeling of belonging not just for young fighters, but for all fighters.

While doing research on youth violence I read a list of predictors amongst youth 11-21. One of the predictors was lack of a nurturing family life. As stated above, belonging to a MMA club can help substitute for a nurturing family life, offering companionship, guidance, supervision, and positive camaraderie.

Next on the list of violent predictors amongst teens was low heart rate, impulsiveness, and low intelligence. MMMA can help with two out of three of those characteristics. MMA training is one of the most rigorous and hard core training there is. From cardio to strength to flexibility to breathing exercises. Anyone who engages in training for MMA will definitely increase their heart rate. There are studies that show that consistent exercise helps with impulsiveness; another positive benefit of MMA. MMA may also help with another factor: low socio-economic status. If you dedicate yourself enough and have the heart and talent you just might make enough money to move you up to a higher level of economic status.

The last predictor was immediate situational influences, which include the potential offenders motives such as anger and the desire to hurt. Well, well, well....MMA is right up their alley. Let me explain. As far as anger goes there isn’t much room for that in MMA. Yeah there are rivalries in MMA and some fighters don’t like other fighters, but to be an angry fighter is a fast way to wear yourself down. A good fighter is a relaxed fighter who can see his game plan clearly. Not one who functions from his emotions. MMA comes into play because it is a proven statistic that exercise helps to diminish raging emotions and helps to regulate hormones. And yes men function off their hormones too! As far as “desire to hurt,” MMA is a wonderful and legal way to hurt someone! In this manner anger is regulated, supervised, and controlled. I would much rather have a young offender in a cage taking out his aggression on a consenting opponent then have him and his friends gang swarm someone on the streets because he may have looked at him the wrong way.

So to all you MMA nay-sayers, you should educate yourself on the sport of MMA and not just look at it from one angle. There are many benefits to MMA; it’s a wonderful, young sport that encompasses all that the martial arts have to offer. It develops peace, patience, respect, honor, courage, dedication, determination, self awareness, hard work , dedication, and two other very important traits: goal setting and achieving. So what’s not to love about the sport? I will be a cheerleader and advocate for the sport of MMA until I am old and gray. And you can mark my words; this isn’t the last time you will hear my name!!! Cher Woodiwiss! Until next time...keep on lovin' MMA!

Headshot Brand Clothing By: Ron Dayley

As a gym owner, manager, and promoter I get a lot of free gear in the mail, most of which are from smaller lesser know companies. I tend to like gear from smaller companies over the ones from the mega brands. I will be writing a review of some of the better gear and clothing that comes my way in a monthly article for MMA Recruiter.

The first thing I want to review or give props to is a small t-shirt and fight shorts company out of Tennessee called Headshot. I know what everyone is thinking - another t-shirt company. What can be said or done to a t-shirt to make it stand out in a sea of Affliction and Tapout shirts you see at the mall or worn by wannbes and middle aged men in bars? Well, Headshot shirts seem to be made of softer cotton and is a little lighter than the average jersey tee that most other brands print on. The cut isn’t as “boxy” as many of the other shirts. Headshot’s main claim to fame is their use of foil printing which is tastefully done and not too in your face!. Check out the Ben Franklin design on the front and back of the shirt Johnathan Ivey is wearing.
