THS Azalea Trail Maid: Payton MaklerBy Shaye JacksonReporter

Jamey Mosley named THS MAN OF THE YEAR

In Mobile, many girls dream someday becoming an Azalea Trail Maid and getting to wear their own beautiful, customized antebellum dress; however, only 50 girls are selected each year. Each school holds individual interviews to decide who will best represent their school. Depending on the size of the ju-nior class at the given high school, each school can send a certain number of representatives to the county wide interview. A total of 100 girls plus one al-ternate were sent on to compete for

one of the 50 spots on the Azalea Trail Court for 2014-2015. After the county interview, letters were mailed out to all of the girls informing them of whether or not they were selected to be a 2014-2015 Trail Maid. Out of the 50 girls, one of our very own Bobcats, Payton Makler, was selected! “I’ve wanted to be a Trail Maid since I was a little girl,” said Pay-ton. Soon after the girls were select-ed, they attended a ceremony to find out what color their dresses

will be. When asked about her dress col-or, Payton said she is glad that she received the color green because she has always loved the color, and it was her first choice. After the dress making process is complete and the new school year starts, Payton will be able to show off her beautiful dress at many different appearances. Theodore High School is very proud to have Payton Makler representing the school and the city of Mobile as a 2014-2015 Azalea Trail Maid.

The Man of the Year competi-tion, a pageant-type competition between some of the male seniors here at Theodore High School, was held last month. This competition is a time when all these specially-selected guys get to show off in front of the stu-dent body. The contestants were chosen by THS students. Buckets with the contestants’ names written on them were placed in the cafeteria; students placed their spare change in the bucket of the person they

wanted to see in the competition. The contestants for this year’s competition were Logan Smith, Chase Noel, Seth Newman, Jamey Mosley, Jerry Gibson, Bil-ly Lowe, Hunter Goff, Addison McGahagin, Tien Nguyen, and Jake Jones. After the contestants were select-ed, an assembly was held and the boys were ready to strut their stuff. The contestants were judged on evening wear, beach wear, and talent. There were many great contes-

tants and they were all unique in their own ways, but only three guys got the judges’ attention. For his talent, Hunter Goff played his guitar and stole all the girls’ hearts. Hunter won 2nd run-ner-up in the competition. Jamey Mosley and Jerry Gib-son shared the stage for their talent as they performed a workout dance from the 80s. Jerry Gibson placed 1st runner up, and Jamey Mosley was named Theodore High School’s Man of the Year for 2014.

tor Suzanne Yates stated that her goal is to increase the number of students eating breakfast at school from 30 percent to 60 percent. Students that eat breakfast, she said, are more likely to perform well in class, come to school, and be on time to school. Freshman Tashon Bowie was

asked if he knew about the free breakfast. He said he was not aware of the breakfast but after receiving this new information he has decided to try the school breakfast. Get to school a little early and chow down on some free break-fast!

This year, for the first time ever, Theodore High School’s health science program is going to start the Health Science Continuum. This course is going to help stu-dents that want to go to college to be a nurse, receive their CNA (Cer-tified Nursing Assistant) license. This is an amazing opportunity for these students. For students that want to receive their CNA license, they will have to complete these three courses and must pass them with a B average: Foundations of Health Science, Therapeutic Services, & Health Science Internship. If you are a freshman or sopho-more, you should look into enroll-ing in the Foundations of Health Science class during your junior year.

If you pass the foundations course with an A or a B, you can move onto the second course, which is Therapeutic Services. If you pass the therapeutic course, with an A or a B, you can possibly be chosen to join the Health Internship Class. During these classes you will learn medical terminology, ba-sic clinical skills, identify basic treatments for some diseases, and disorders, report medical informa-tion to immediate supervisors, be-come prepared for acceptance into post-secondary healthcare educa-tion programs and/or employment in the healthcare field. Grading procedures for students enrolled in Health Science classes is broken down into two segments. There is the major grade which

consists of exams, tests, perfor-mance tests, and course projects; those will be 60% of the student’s grade. The other grade is the daily grade which is attendance, class par-ticipation, attitude, performance, quizzes, Skill’s Lab Tasks, news-paper articles, and homework; those make up 40% of the student’s grade. The student must complete all check-offs, clinical hours, maintain professional behavior, attire, and attendance to be granted the oppor-tunity to receive their CNA. For more information about these courses and what they consist of please see Mrs. Jaimie Hovell in C219!

Who wears the pants?By Gracie GriffinReporter

It is an age old fight with couples as to who “wears the pants” in their relationship. Many couples even break up over this ridiculous argument. Some people argue, “I wear the pants because he or she does what I say to do.” A survey was taken of 20 stu-dent-couples here at Theodore. 5 percent of those polled said that the girl wears the pants. 20 percent said that it is a mutual decision that both equally share the pants. Chase Poole, when asked about his girlfriend, said, “We both re-spect each other enough not to tell each other what to do.” 25 percent were undecided on the matter. 50 percent said that the male wears the pants in the relationship. “I let her think she wears the pants in the relationship, but really everyone knows I do because I am the guy,” stated a male student who

whised to remain anonymous. There should be an equal amount of authority from both individuals in the relationship. The girl and the boy should each have one leg in the pants (figuratively speaking, of course.) Relationships are not about call-ing the shots and controlling your partner; they are about helping each other and always being there for one another. It is a partnership.

In order to have a healthy, func-tioning, relationship, each person should make compromises and trust that their significant other has his/her interest at heart. Trying to decide who should “wear the pants” in a relationship can become an argument that gets blown way out of proportion, but do not let the answer to this make or break your relationship!

Dating students Hannah Bice and Hunter Goff say they both wear the pants in their relationship. In fact, Hunter says, “I’ve never even seen her in a skirt!”

Senior Bobcat Devin Brown recently made a commitment to the South Alabama Jaguar softball team. After a signing with her family, Bobcat teammates, and friends, Devin Brown answered a few questions about the future and her softball career. Q: How do you feel about sign-ing with South? It is very exciting, but it is more than that. It’s very satisfying to know that all the years of training actually paid off. It’s a dream come true. Q: Who has helped and encour-aged you to achieve this goal? My entire family has been ex-tremely supportive, and without God none of this would have been possible at all. I have been very blessed. My parents have put in a

ton of money, time, and research into softball so that I could live my dream. Q: Will you miss you high school team?I have many good friends on my high school team, and I will miss them very much. Q: Where do you think your softball career will end?My career will probably end after college, but I plan to stay around softball as much as I can. It has always been, and always will be, my life. Devin also added that she has a dream of winning a national title in college with the Jags, and she says she will not give up on her dreams. She holds many records in the Theodore softball program and was the first to receive a Division I scholarship.

We also asked the head softball coach, Ms. Murray, a few ques-tions. Q: How proud are you of Devin?I am extremely proud and happy for Devin and the next chapter of her life. Q: How has Devin’s performance influenced the team?Devin is a positive role model for the team and the school.

Q: How has the team influenced Devin?Devin’s team helps her more “off the field” with helping her focus on everyday tasks.Q: How do you feel about this experience? It is always a good feeling to see one of the girls receive a full schol-arship.
