Iris Schiller’s 90th Birthday

Longtime Lakeside resident Iris Schiller celebrated her 90th birthday at the home of Kathy Kassel and son-in-law David

Kassel. Relatives from all over the country came to the July 5 event. The Kassel’s home, where Iris lives, was filled with more than 100 friends and relatives, which included her three other daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Schiller retired from Nelson and Sloan in Lakeside. Many who knew her during her work years were there to wish the lovely lady Happy 90th Birthday.

Lakeside Chamber MixerThe Lakeside Chamber of Commerce June Business Mixer

was the perfect opportunity for Lakeside Rock and Block to host their 25th anniversary celebration and Chamber Business Mixer.

Alpine Rock and Block first opened in Alpine. Six years later they moved to a location on Lakeside Ave. in Lakeside before moving to their permanent site 13288 Highway 8 Business. The family owned business is operated by Russ Rodvold and his wife Debbie. Over the years the business has become an intricate part of the community of Lakeside. During the Cedar Fire, Alpine Rock and Block was central to the operation and recovery later known as East County Fire Relief.

The Rodvold’s are active in the Lakeside Chamber of Com-merce, Western Day Parade, Spirit of Christmas and Russ Rudvold sits on the Lakeside Design Review Board.

The June business mixer was one of the biggest mixers of the year. Those who attended enjoyed a 10 percent anniversary discount on items purchased. The Rudvold’s thanked the com-munity for their support over the past 25 years.

“When was the last time you could take your children to a quality baseball game for $5?” said Debbie Norman, President of the Mother Goose Parade Association.

A fun day is planned begin-ning at 12 noon, with Mother Goose, 50/50 drawings, give-aways, cake, foul ball prizes and autographs from the players.

All little league children that come in their uniforms not only get in free, but they will be allowed to go out on the

field to meet the players to get autographs.

Autographs will be before the game and during half time. Combo meals (hotdogs or hamburgers) will be offered for only $5.

To start the game, Mother Goose will throw out the first pitch, followed by one lucky little league player in uniform, who will be chosen before the game.

“I urge everyone to come out to Valhalla High School Satur-day and enjoy a day of fun and entertainment,” said Norman. “Let’s support our local colle-giate baseball team, the Mother Goose Parade and most of all, the tradition of bringing the kids out to the ballgame!”

The event will be video streamed and can be watched after the game on the Force website.

The staff takes great pride helping players achieve their goals playing college and pro-fessional baseball. The staff works hard to have eligible and qualified players sign to play professional baseball. It’s our knowledge, dedication and determination that sets us apart.

Want to find great finds for cheap? Need materials for quilting, or sewing perhaps? Maybe you’re simply just bored. Whatever the reason, find out great tips

for thrifting below!

1. Find thrift stores and secondhand stores in your area. You can find these stores in just about any town. You can also use directories online or your local paper to find your near-est thrift store.

2. Decide why you are going. Are you just looking for cute stuff in general or do you have something in mind?

3. Start looking. Some stores are more organized than oth-ers. After you have been to a few you’ll know, which ones are better than others. Understand the system, if you can. You may find things organized by gender, type of clothes, color and size, or you may find just a mass of clothes and household objects. Start with the more organized stores until you become proficient at looking through clothes.

4. Pick up anything that catches your eye and possibly try it on in the dressing room. If you don’t like the idea of putting someone else’s clothes on before washing them, buy whatever you think will look nice, wash the items at home, and re-donate them as needed. Also you should know that the clothing item may look better on you then it does on the hanger! So try something on, you might like it. Experiment with clothes; put different things together.

5. Don’t forget the other items in a thrift store. If you

InspirationHave a blessed day; now fire me if you dareby Dr. Rev. James L. Snyder

For me, watching televi-sion is not an obses-sion; it is more like

a distraction. I do not follow every little bit on the televi-sion screen. For me it is not a matter of life or death, it is just a matter of recreation. I know that nothing on TV is real. We can be in the middle of the next program and I do not re-alize that the first program has ended. Talk about confusing!

When something does catch my attention, boy does it have my attention.

“Did you,” I ask my wife, “hear that?”

“What?” She said with a very confused look on her face.

So I had to explain the news story that I just happened to catch. I do not know all of the details, I was not paying that much attention, just that someone was fired from their

job for saying to a customer, “Have a blessed day.”

My wife then asked the ques-tion I was thinking. “What is wrong with telling someone to have a blessed day?”

I could not figure it out. It is like at Christmas time some places do not want their employees to say to the cus-tomer, “Merry Christmas.” The reasoning is, it might offend someone. What about us who are offended when somebody does not say Merry Christmas to us? This matter of being offended can go both ways. There should be an equal of-fended person law. There is a law for everything else.

I just would like to meet the person who is offended by somebody saying to them, “Have a blessed day.”

Later that evening I was watching a new crime/detec-tive story on TV and all of a

Dear Dr. Luauna — I love America

Dear Readers,

IIt was a great week; Fourth of July, fireworks, parades,

and American flags flying high. As I watched the fireworks, sitting comfortable in my lawn chair with a small group of amazing friends, we listened to the music of our patriotic songs in the background; my heart was stirred deep within.

I thank God for America, I am a true American, I love America with all my heart and I pray for her daily without fail. Yes, we see some crazy things happening in our land, things which I’m sure, God Himself is not pleased with. I believe prayer and humility before God is our key to victory in America. Our nation was founded on Judeo-Christian values and we must never forget that it is God Almighty who brings blessing to a land.

Something happens inside my heart when I hear any American say they hate our country, and when I see someone burn our Red, White Blue, I want to buy them a one way ticket out of America.

I traveled out of the United States of America for many years as an Evangelist, preaching and sharing the gospel message of Jesus Christ to lands that were broken, poverty stricken, and even at the brink of war, knowing I could be in trouble. When my meetings were finished, I would board a plane back to the USA and the minute my plane landed on U.S. soil, I breathed a sigh of relief; thanking God for America!

One time, I was in the heart of the African bush, on roads which were barely passable. While with my interpreter, a driver, and my good friend Jill, we came upon an old flatbed torn truck blocking the road. I could see my interpreter’s fear and knew we were in trouble. We had no choice but to stop, my interpreter had sweat running down his forehead as he turned and said, “Oh, Dr. Luauna PRAY!” That’s just what I did, as I looked up and saw a group of young boys no more than 14-17 years of age with AK 47’s in their hands, and ammunition rounds in a belt swung around their neck. They surrounded our car, these young men yelling at the driver and my interpreter. The young man in charge kept yelling and came to my side of the car. My window was down because of the heat, I had my Bible in my hand. I was sitting in the back seat, and I couldn’t understand what they were saying, they spoke Chichewa. He looked at me right in the eyes and I looked right back at him. I was clinging to my Bible. I noticed he looked down at my Bible and looked at me again. He asked my interpreter a few more questions, he started yelling again and then all of a sudden they let us pass. My interpreter looked at me, smiled, as he said, “God is truly with you, it’s a miracle they did not kill us.” Of course, I was scared; we praised God for His protection. I told them maybe we should drive a little faster in case they change their mind.

I love America! She is my land, many have laid down their lives so we can drive down the road and not worry about a group of rebels taking over an area. Love America, after all you never see Americans dying to get into another country. Border patrols are not lined up on the other side of this land trying to keep a flood of U.S. citizens from going over the river into Mexico, or Canada. While millions wish they could come to America the land of the free. Love her, pray for her, and protect her, America.

Psalm 46:1; God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

In His Love & mine, Dr. Luauna

sudden, I heard some words that were offensive. They were saying curse words that I have never heard on TV before. I have always believed that if you have to use curse words, it is because your vocabulary is drastically lacking in intel-lectual responses to the world around you.

Here is my dilemma. Why can you say curse words on TV, which everybody knows is scripted, but you cannot say, “Have a blessed day,” without getting fired?

If I was in business I would want my employees to greet my clients with a cheerful, “Have a blessed day” and not some awful curse words.

I was complaining about this to a friend of mine who explained to me that curse words on television are con-sidered “literary license.” Who is paying for that license I am wondering.

All of this has to do with the PC syndrome in our country today. The problem is what was PC yesterday is no longer PC today. Who knows what tomorrow’s PC will be.

What I cannot accept is the fact that being crude and rude is PC and saying something nice is not. Have we reverted to the caveman mentality? Is being nice is no longer accept-able behavior?

I like what David says, “Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name” (Psalms 103:1).

Perhaps the reason people are offended by that phrase is because they know that only God has the power to bless. If I am being blessed by God, I am going to turn around and bless people around me.

So, for those offended by that phrase let me say, “Have a blessed day. And fire me if you dare.”

Rev. James L. Snyder is pastor of the Family of God Fellowship, P.O. Box 831313, Ocala, FL 34483. He lives with his wife, Martha, in Silver Springs Shores. Call him at 1-866-552-2543 or e-mail [email protected].

We were all blessed to know Dr. David Joseph Naidus, who passed away peacefully on June 17, 2014, just a few weeks before his 63rd birthday. Despite David’s brave battle with lymphoma in recent years, he was a dedicated Veterinar-ian for 40 years in the San Diego East County. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on July 12, 1951, David was the loving son of Joseph Naidus and Agnes Duris Naidus, and brother to Douglas Naidus, all deceased. He is survived by his younger sister, Laura Naidus, who lives in Michigan. David had many aunts, uncles, and cousins, from the Naidus and Duris family who remember David’s big personality and great sense of humor he shared at the many family gatherings and holidays over the years.

David attended the De-troit Public Schools, proudly embracing the Motown cul-ture, and went on to earn his DVM degree from Michigan State University in 1974. Af-ter beginning his career as a veterinarian in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, David even-

tually moved to sunny San Diego, where he continued his successful medical career working at the Broadway Ani-mal Hospital, Animal Medical Center, and Cuyamaca Animal Hospital. Dr. Naidus used his gifted medical skills, humor, and charm to heal his count-less animal patients, while bringing emotional comfort to their human companions. He mentored many doctors over the years, and was that special doctor who made the workplace fun, keeping his colleagues laughing for hours. It is not surprising that all the vet technicians wanted to work by David’s side.

When David walked into a room, he brought with him his irreverent wit, his broad smile, his subtle chuckle, and a spirit of pure joy that touched his family, friends, co-workers, clients, and even total strang-ers. To know David, was to love David.

His many close friends will fondly remember David’s love of the sun and swimming, sipping wine poolside each Sunday, as well as his fondness for cooking, cheering on the Detroit Tigers, seeing movies the day they first hit the theatre, and listening to his favorite mu-

sical artists, Barbara Streisand, Cher, and Diana Ross. Winter ski trips to “Elizabeth’s Cot-tage” in Big Bear, or weekend get-aways to Palm Springs, always following the heat and sun, were some of David’s best times with those he loved.

David will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and co-workers. In the immortal words of Diana Ross, “[Our] World is Empty Without You, Babe.”

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 12, at 11:00 AM, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, located at 15546 Pomerado Rd., Poway, CA 92064. A reception celebrating David’s life will follow. In honor of David’s memory, donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. You can visit their website at www.lls.org. Click on Ways to Help, then Donate.

need to furnish an apartment inexpensively, for instance, thrift stores can be an excellent source of dishes, pots and pans, and even furnishings. Don’t forget to look for a good deal on an attractive bedspread to cover up a comfortable but unsightly sofa. You might even find that shopping in a thrift store is less costly than moving items or renting furniture. You also can find awesome decor for your room, like posters, pictures, trinkets and more.

It might not all match, but that can be a great thing. Go for an eclectic look, instead. If you’d like mixed pieces to have a bit more unity, try painting, covering, or refinishing them.

6. If you love to read, browse through the book selection. Used books are often very inexpensive, but many of the books found in relatively low-traffic thrift shops are beat up. Make sure a book isn’t missing any pages before buying it; a simple flip-through works well enough.

Laughter is the Best MedicineSiamese twins

Siamese twin men walk into a bar in Canada and park themselves on a bar stool.

One of them says to the bartender, “Don’t mind us; we’re joined at the hip. I’m John, he’s Jim. Two Molson Canadian beers, draft please.”

The bartender, feeling slightly awkward, tries to make polite conversation while pouring the beers. “Been on holiday yet, lads?”

“Off to England next month,” says John. “We go to England every year, rent a car and drive for miles. Don’t we, Jim?” Jim agrees.

“Ah, England!” says the bartender. “Wonderful country... the history, the beer, the culture...”

“Nah, we don’t like that British baloney,” says John. “Ham-burgers and Molson’s beer, that’s us, eh Jim? And we can’t stand the English - they’re so arrogant and rude.”

“So why keep going to England?” asks the bartender.

“It’s the only chance Jim gets to drive.”

consequences: Suppose some-one poses as you and gets an appendectomy; if you later entered the hospital with ab-dominal pain, your medical file would show that your ap-pendix was already removed and you could be tragically misdiagnosed.

Here are a few tips for avoid-ing medical ID fraud and steps to take if it happens:

Your medical files are often full of information ID thieves crave: account numbers for So-cial Security, health insurance, Medicare or Medicaid, contact information, email address, etc. All it takes is one stolen em-ployee laptop or an intercepted piece of mail or email to leave you vulnerable.

Sophisticated thieves will also hack computer networks of insurance companies, phar-macies, medical equipment suppliers and others who have access to your medical records. And unfortunately, the black market for stolen information is so tempting that employees have been known to steal data.

Common signs of medical identity theft include:

•Provider bills or insurance Explanation of Benefits (EOB) forms that reference medical services you didn’t receive. (Verify all dates, providers and treatments and look for dupli-cate billing.)

•Calls from debt collectors about unfamiliar bills.

•Medical collection notices on your credit report.

Just as you shouldn’t hesitate to ask your doctor or nurse whether they washed their hands, so you should feel free to ask what security precautions their business office takes to protect your information. Here are a few preventive measures to take:

•Never reveal personal or account information during unsolicited calls or emails.

•Be suspicious if someone offers you free medical equip-ment or services and then re-quests your Medicare number.

•Never let people borrow your Medicare or insurance card to obtain services for themselves. Not only is this illegal, but it could be disas-trous if your medical histories become intermingled (think about differing allergies, blood types, etc.)

•Regularly check your credit reports for unpaid bills for unfamiliar medical services or equipment. This could indicate someone has opened a new insurance policy using your identity and is running up charges.

If you suspect or know your information has been compro-mised, ask for copies of your medical records from each doc-tor, hospital, pharmacy, lab or health plan where a thief may have used your information. Also request a copy of their “Ac-counting of Disclosures” form, which lists everyone who got copies of your medical records.

Next, write them all by cer-tified mail explaining which information is inaccurate,

along with copies of docu-ments supporting your posi-tion. Ask them to correct or delete all errors and to inform everyone they may have sent records to (labs, other doctors, hospitals, etc.) Keep copies of all correspondence and logs of all phone calls or other related activities.

You can also file a police report and contact the fraud units at the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You may want to place a fraud alert or freeze on your accounts. Visit the Federal Trade Commission’s Identity Theft site for more information (www.consumer.ftc.gov).

softball team that is part of the Alpine Girls Softball As-sociation. These All Stars are a part of a competitive fast-pitch softball organization dedicated to teaching softball, teamwork and sportsmanship to ladies of above average athletic ability. We chose our 11 girls from a small group of 33 in and around the Alpine area. Other leagues have hundreds of girls to choose from. We have some of the most talented young ladies right here in our own backyards of our small town! Our goal is to provide a fun and family-friendly environ-ment that prepares our young ladies for high school softball, college softball and life. Our goal from the beginning of our All Star season, was to qualify for the 2014 ASA Western “B” National Championship in Roseville CA July 28- August 3rd 2014. Our girls accom-plished that goal this weekend by finishing in 5th place at the ASA Southern California State Championship in Lan-caster Ca.

We are very proud of the accomplishments of our girls and we need your support to assist us in our goals. While the team will conduct fund-raising activities such as bake sales, car washes, raffle ticket sales, the cost of traveling to Ros-eville for a week outweighs the proceeds realized from these endeavors. Each girls goal is to raise $2,000 per family. That’s a total of $22,000. Your contri-bution would significantly help us in reaching our goals. The team is coached and organized

We are now three weeks into the La Mesa Village Merchant’s Association ‘Back to the 50s’ car show in downtown La Mesa and have had a great turnout from car enthusiasts

with more beautiful and unique cars each week.

This last Thursday night’s show featured our military and service personnel honor-ing those that serve now and the ones who served in the past. It was a great kickoff to the Forth of July, Independence day weekend. Thank you to all who came out in sup-port and for the merchants and vendors that help in making this the great event it is!

Congratulations to the trophy winners of the show!

Hey! Look at that! You never know what you’ll see in the sky, on the shore and even in the sand when you go to the seashore. What you see may depend on whether the tide is going out or coming in. Study the area where the land meets the sea. Is it rocky with waves crashing or is it along stretch of white sand peacefully meeting the water? You might watch little crabs hiding and scurrying in therocky areas. Different kinds of shells might be easier to findalong sandy stretches. It’s fun to find driftwood too!

What Is Seen at the Seashore?

Protecting dogs from fleas and ticks is an important part of re-

sponsible pet care and this season shines a light on the prevention of Lyme disease in dogs. Distressing and harmful for your pet, parasites can cause diseases that affect you and your family.

Flea bites can cause skin dis-orders, infections and allergies, and spread tapeworms. And bacteria spread from infected tick bites can cause Lyme disease, a bacterial infection that can affect humans, dogs and cats.

Lyme disease is character-ized by lameness, swollen joints and fever. Ticks carrying Lyme disease don’t discrimi-nate, so it is imperative to take a proactive stance in protecting not only your pet, but your family from this debilitating disease.

“The fleas and ticks on your dog are a small component of your concern,” says Caryn Stichler, vice president of mar-keting at Sergeants Pet Care Products. “Fleas and their eggs can live outside in grass, soil and crevices in sidewalks, and inside on rugs, carpets, floor cracks and bedding. Treat your pet first and foremost and then the animal’s environment.”

Fleas and ticks multiply at an alarming rate. So act quickly this flea and tick season:

Treat the petThe first step is to apply

a preventative treatment on your dog, such as PetArmor Plus IGR. PetArmor Plus IGR contains fipronil, the number one vet-recommended active ingredient that kills fleas, ticks, chewing lice -- helping to keep Lyme disease-carrying ticks at bay. It also contains an Insect Growth Regulator that kills flea eggs and stops the reinfesta-tion cycle. The topical can be found at grocery, mass and drug retailers nationwide. More information can be found at

www.PetArmor.com.

Treat the home“Washing pet bedding, vacu-

uming carpets and treating with household insecticide sprays, powders and foggers are good first steps to ridding your home of fleas and preventing infesta-tions,” says Stichler.

Use a spray that’s pet friend-ly and designed to reach the hiding places of fleas -- rugs, carpets, drapes and upholstery.

Treat the yardYour yard should be a safe

zone for pets to play, not a place to pick up parasites. Ticks, which are usually dark brown or black, have pincers and can be spotted by the na-ked eye. Fleas are tiny, brown insects and can be difficult to spot.

So inspect your yard wear-ing a pair of long white socks. Secure the infested socks in a plastic bag and throw them away. Now spray your yard and around the foundation of your home to kill flea popula-tions lurking outside.

When it comes to the health of your pet and your family, be proactive. Clean your pet, home and yard regularly and use treatments year round to kill pests and prevent infesta-tion.

“Hi! My name is TOKYO, and I’m a four-year-old Chihuahua fellow who’s here at the shelter because my family moved away and could take me along. I’ve been trying very hard to adjust to my new surroundings, so I’m hoping to find a loving home just as quick as can be. I’m tiny, sweet, and sensitive, so I’d like to be in a quiet, adult

home, and I’d like to be the only dog in my new home. I’ll be so very happy to sit in your lap once I get to know you, and that will probably be my favorite place to be. I have a very soft coat of fur, so I think you’ll enjoy petting me, too. You’ll be pleased to know that I’ve already been house trained. I’d probably also like to have a little dog kennel to go to in my new home when I’m feeling overwhelmed. I have one here at the shelter, but I’ll probably come out to greet you when you come visit me. Please ask the helpful staff here at the El Cajon Animal Shelter if we can spend some time getting better acquainted out in the nice play yard that they have here. I think you’ll see that inside this tiny little body is your loving, devoted pal for life. Love, Tokyo” Kennel #33
