Call  for  papers  for  a  Special  Issue  on

Transformative  Research  and  Development  in  Urban  and  Re-‐gional  Environments  -‐  The  Role  of  Science,  Methods  and  Transdiscipli-‐narity

Edited  by  Susanne  Elsen1,  Roland  W.  Scholz2,3,  Gerald  Steiner2,  and  Stefan  Zerbe1

1Free  University  of  Bozen-‐Bolzano  (campus  Brixen),  Italy,  2Danube  University  Krems,  Austria,  3Swiss  Federal  Institute  of  Technology  Zurich,  Switzerland

Scope  and  aims

Climate  change,  growing  poverty,  migration,  land  degradation,  urbanization  and  economic  uncertain-‐ties  and  crises  pose  challenges  on  societies  and  their  environments  throughout  the  world.  This  global  change  is  interconnected  and  cut  across  different  levels,  sectors,  and  areas  of  society.  The  complexity  of  these  challenges  asks  for  a  new  mode  of  knowledge  generation,  transgressing  the  boundaries  of  particular  disciplines  as  well  as  those  between  science  and  society.  Thus,  research  for  eco-‐social  so-‐lutions  requires  comprehensive  approaches  includ-‐ing  multifaceted  perspectives  and  a  methodology  suited  to  mobilize,  initiate,  attend,  and  co-‐shape  processes  of  social,  political,  and  economic  devel-‐opment  and  transformation.

Transformative  science  (mode  2  science)  is  a  scien-‐tific  culture,  confronting  the  challenges  of  the  21st  century  (mode  2  society).  It  involves  competences  of  different  disciplines,  relevant  stakeholders,  decision  makers  and  concerned  people  in  an  interactive  pro-‐cess  of  knowledge  generation  and  the  identification  of  sustainable  development  options.  The  diversity  of  knowledge,  skills  and  perspectives  can  thus  stimu-‐late  processes  in  solving  highly  complex  socio-‐environmental  questions.  Consequently,  transforma-‐tive  research  has  become  a  crucial  function  especial-‐ly  in  efforts  to  solve  eco-‐social  problems  on  the  local  and  regional  level.

This  research  culture  is  highly  ambitious.  It  pays  spe-‐cial  attention  to  the  change  of  attitudes  and  compe-‐tences  of  scientists  and  the  style  of  cooperation  be-‐tween  different  science  cultures  and  between  scien-‐tific  and  non-‐scientific  actors.  It  takes  place  within  and  between  open  and  shifting  boundaries.  It  chal-‐lenges  institutional  and  structural  causes  and  effects

with  regard  to  the  regionalization  of  mitigation,  ad-‐aptation  and  innovation,  namely  social  mobilization  and  institutional  development.

The  special  issue  will  focus  on  social,  ecological  and  economic  challenges  of  transformation  in  urban  and  regional  environments.  Special  emphasis  will  be  on  activating  and  integrating  citizens  in  processes  of  transformation  and  development.  In  addition  to  cur-‐rent  theoretical  and  methodological  approaches  of  transformative  research,  papers  may  address  pre-‐vailing  topics  such  as  migration  and  integration,  soli-‐darity  economy,  strategies  to  combat  poverty,  hu-‐man  health  in  urban  settings,  community  develop-‐ment  and  life-‐long  learning.

Two  types  of  papers  are  welcomed

1.  Papers  which  present  innovative  case  studies  or  practice  of  collaboration  of  scientists  and  practition-‐ers,  in  particular  transdisciplinary  processes  in  spa-‐tial  transformation  processes.

2.  Papers  which  deal  with  methodological  questions  of  spatial  transformation  processes  such  as  the  role  of  transdisciplinary  processes,  the  role,  influence,  and  effects  of  different  ways  of  knowing,  stakehold-‐ers  and  scientists  may  take  in  planning  processes  or  questions  about  the  value  of  planning  methods  or  knowledge  integration  (e.g.,  in  co-‐definition  of  goals,  co-‐creation,  co-‐design,  or  co-‐evaluation  of  transfor-‐mation  processes).

Important  dates:  The  deadline  of  submission  is  Sep-‐tember  30,  2016.  The  Special  issue  is  scheduled  as  Volume  3  in
