The Sedalia Kiwanis Club will continue its tradition of honoring local high school stu- dents who exhibit strong faith and leadership qualities during its Fourth Annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast. The breakfast, set for 9 a.m. May 21 at the Christ and Trin- ity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3201 Southwest Blvd., “gives us an opportunity to recognize youth who are not afraid to put their faith on the forefront with their leader- ship,” Mayor Elaine Horn said. Bob Milner, president of the Sedalia Kiwanis Club, said the event was launched four years ago when then-Mayor Bob Wasson had just gotten through his first round of cancer sur- geries. “We wanted to honor him and his faith,” Milner said. After Wasson died in April 2009, the club decided to con- tinue the breakfast as an annual event “to showcase the youth of our community,” Milner said. Chuches nominate a youth member of their congregation who has exhibited leadership, Christian values and commu- nity service. Four churches have nominated youth so far, but, “We hope to get the word out so other churches will nominate youth, as well,” Mil- ner said. The club also will present the 2011 William A. Schein Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded annually to a local high school senior. This year’s recipient of the $500 award is Hannah Wilson, a senior at Sa- cred Heart School. Milner said there were 10 “very good” ap- plicants for scholarship this year, and that applications for the 2012 scholarship will be available early next year. The event is open to the public and Milner said that at- tendance has increased every year. Horn said the event’s keynote speaker typically pro- vides inspiration for the youth to help them as they grow into community leaders. This year’s speaker will be Dr. Peter M. Kurowski, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in California, Mo. Kurowski has been a pastor in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod for nearly 33 years and has written a number of books, including “The Seduction of Extremes,” “The Cure For Racism,” “The Lifelines of Love” and “The Real Magic.” He also has been a Kiwanis member for 17 years. The breakfast “is an oppor- tunity for the community to join in and help us thank our youth for what they do,” Horn said. Proceed with caution if you are asked to send money or to give a credit card number. Proceed with caution in calling 900 phone numbers. All phone numbers pre-fixed by “900” are charged to the CALLER. What Students Need To KnowAbout The SAT And ACT

(NAPS)—For most high school juniors, the SAT or ACT representsone of the most important stepping-stones between them and admis-sion to the colleges of their choice.

Many students consider only one test—either the SAT or ACT—and as a result of geographical predominance and lack of informa-tion, they might be missing an opportunity to achieve their optimalscore by taking the test best suited to their academic strengths.

The DifferenceHistorically, the SAT is the

standard test on the West andEast Coasts, while the ACTdominates the Midwest andSouth, but things are begin-ning to shift as more studentsrealize they have the option oftaking both tests. The maindifference between the SATand the ACT is that the lattermeasures the student’sknowledge learned in highschool, whereas the SAT triesto determine “innate” abili-ties.

“Most schools accept both the SAT or ACT, except in rare cases, sothe test a student decides to take shouldn’t be a deal breaker inadmissions,” says Jake Becker, academic director at Grockit.com, acollaborative and social learning platform. “When trying to decidewhich test is right for you, I suggest taking a practice test in each andexploring the requirements of each school that you’re consideringapplying to.”

The ACT has four sections (English, Math, Science and Reading)and the SAT has three (Reading, Writing and Math). The SAT recent-ly added Writing to the main exam after the majority of colleges start-ed requiring the SAT Subject Test in Writing (SAT II) as part of theapplication.

The ACT does not require an essay as part of the main test butoffers an optional one and it’s suggested that all students take it. TheCollege Board also has SAT II Subject Tests that let students showcasetheir classroom-based knowledge in subjects such as Physics,Calculus or History, which the ACT does not offer.

“Students should consider their strengths and weaknesses in thedifferent subjects available for the SAT II and compare them with theACT to help decide which would be a better supplement to theirapplication,” Becker added. “If a student has taken AP courses thatalign with one of the SAT Subject Tests, he or she might feel more con-fident taking that test. If these SAT II tests are daunting and won’tprovide great scores, the ACT may be a better choice.”

Contact your advertising representative if you would like to haveyour business featured in this space.

Students should consider both col-lege admission tests before takingeither.

Education Tips

Fresh always better than frozen

I don’t know if it’s the economy, coinci-dence or a blatantly transparent plot, but in lessthan a month, I’ve received three e-mailsrequesting that I revisit the topic of grocerystore fish bait.

Most grocers don’t advertise that their storeshelves and coolers are stocked with an impres-sive variety of catfish baits. I find this confus-ing. After all, what purveyor of food fit forhuman consumption wouldn’t agree that theoverall ambiance of his emporium would beimproved by the presence of a few good oldboys wearing mud-caked gum boots and biboveralls stained with don’t-ask-what?

Most catfish anglers enter grocery stores insearch of fresh chicken livers. Fresh — notfrozen — chicken liver is not only a top choicefor channel cats and a better-than-fair bait forblue cats, it may well be the No. 1 bait forhybrid stripers.

Some catfish anglers prefer turkey, pork orbeef liver, probably in that order. None of theselivers are quite as effective as chicken, butthey’re much easier to keep on the hook, whichmay be a deciding factor in heavy current.

Many grocery stores carry frozen shrimplabeled as fish bait. This shrimp will catch fish, but they don’t hold a candle to the fresh shrimpcarried by some large supermarkets.

Human-quality shrimp has another distinctadvantage over bait shrimp — it’s a lot lessexpensive.

How well does shrimp work as bait? TheNorth Dakota state record channel cat, whichweighed more than 31 pounds, was caught byan angler using fresh shrimp for bait.

Liver and shrimp aren’t exactly secret baits, but grocery stores also stock a variety of lessknown fish baits disguised as people food.

The All-American hot dog, for example, isamong the top 10 channel cat baits. Hot dogswork well either raw or cooked, so they can beshared with Mr. Whiskers either before or afteryou pause for shore lunch.

Down Truman way, Little Smokie mini-sausages have become a preferred jug-line baitduring the summer months and not just forchannel cats.

Blue cats have also developed a taste forthese spicy morsels. I can’t see why any similarsausage wouldn’t work as well, but that’s aminority opinion.

Canned whole kernel corn is almost as uni-versal a fish bait as the more famous angleworm. Putting a kernel or two of corn on asmall, short-shanked hook is anything but asecret technique for many anglers who like tocatch trout or carp, but corn’s also a goodchoice for anyone who wants to fill a stringerwith channel cats or bluegill.

Fish prefer the bargain brands of corn, prob-ably because the kernels tend to be larger andtougher.

If you’ll be fishing in still water, buy a cou-ple of cans of corn. Scatter the contents of one

in the area you intend to fish. This will attractlarge numbers of fish to the area, and, sooneror later, one of them will find the kernel of cornwith your hook in it.

Every serious carp angler has several super-secret dough-bait recipes. Some of these con-coctions give the angler an edge when the fish-ing’s super tough.

However, a simple bait made by moisteningcorn or bran flakes with a tablespoon or two ofhoney or corn syrup and just enough milk tomake a stiff, moldable dough will work everybit as well.

Some dough-bait chefs insist on boilingtheir creations to toughen them, but I seldombother. Dough baits aren’t just carp-getters.Catfish, trout and bluegill will gobble them upjust as eagerly.

As long as there are trout to be caught, therewill be a market for Velveeta cheese. Any softcheese would work as well, and those withadded herbs and spices probably would be thebest of all.

As is the case with most grocery store baits, cheese appeals to several species of fish. It’sanother of the top 10 choices for channel cats.

Most anglers aren’t aware that bluegill arequite fond of pasta. Hollow pasta shapes likeelbow macaroni are the easiest to use. Cookthem until they’re soft enough to thread onto ahook but not until they’re as tender as recom-mended for most recipes.

Don’t tell the artificial lure-only purists Itold you this, but crappie and bass will bitepasta, too.

Visit the spice isle before you leave thestore.

Adding either garlic or anis will greatlyimprove the fish-attracting ability of any bait, whether that bait came from the grocery storeor a more conventional bait shop.

Anglers with active imaginations will findmany more sources of bait in grocery stores.

Here’s the most fantastic example of thepotential rewards for not being afraid to experi-ment I know.

The Missouri Alternative Methods recordrainbow trout, a 15-pound, 6-ounce lunker, wastempted by a French fry.

The ultimate reason grocery stores are suchgood sources of fish bait is irony in its mostclassic form. It’s possible to find an open gro-cery store 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You certainly can’t say that about bait andtackle shops, many of which operate on“banker’s hours.”

to be stupid with them.-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Volunteer makes sure OldGlory flies in good shape

The military organization that broughtthe American flags to downtown Sedalia isnot about to let those star-spangled ban-ners become tattered, tangled or soiled ontheir watch.

“We’re not going to let them get tat-tered — it’s just not going to happen. Andthere’s going to be somebody down thereevery day making sure they aren’twrapped,” said Larry Stevenson, a mem-ber of the 40 & 8.

Don Barbour, treasurer of the 40 & 8,and Stevenson are in charge of getting vol-unteers to unfurl the flags each day. BillNeff, 79, of Sedalia, is the one of them.

Every Thursday afternoon, he stops byVeterans of Foreign Wars Post 2591 topick up a 24-foot-long paint roller whichhe uses it to unfurl any of 70-plus flagsthat line Ohio Avenue.

Neff started volunteering a couple ofmonths ago because he felt it was some-thing he could do to help. Several of theolder members aren’t able to hold theirarms over their head for an extended pe-riod of time. Neff learned two valuablelessons the first time he did it — bringgloves and wear sunglasses.

“First time I did it, I got in the truckand I could hardly drive home. I felt like Ihad gooseberry briars in my hands. I tookhold of the steering wheel and felt stuffsticking me,” he said. It turns out littlepieces of fiberglass had come off the poleand were all over the palms of his hands.

He starts his shift at Main Street andworks his way south on Ohio. Then hemakes his way back. He said there is alearning curve to controlling the roller, es-pecially when the winds kick up. Some-times he has to extend the roller 20 feet soit can reach the flag. Then, while holdinghis arms overhead, it can take numerousattempts to get the flag to start unwrap-ping. Some are wound so tight, it can takeup to 12 attempts to get them unfurled.

“We’ve got to keep them old flags a-flying,” he said.

Neff is a Korean War veteran who was

stationed in the Punchbowl area. He wasan Army wheel-and-track mechanic whoworked on tanks.

“I was there when the cease-fire wassigned,” he said. He remembers the Kore-ans coming out and throwing their handsup in the air to surrender.

“I was glad to get out of there,” he said.Sometimes on his route he reflects

about his service and what the flag meansto him — freedom. He also remembers themen who gave their lives for this country.

“I’m sure all those guys overseas areproud every time they see a flag flying,”he said.

40 & 8, Voiture 333, wanted to showthe patriotism Sedalia has for its countryand servicemen and women by bringingthe American flags to the downtown. Theyhope out-of-town visitors will stop to lookat them while shopping and dining at localbusinesses.

“The flag means everything to a manthat has been in service and we’re (the 40& 8) all service people,” Barbour said.“Not all of us have been in combat, but allof us have served. We believe in the flag.We all know the sacrifices that were put infor that flag.”

Voiture 333 is very appreciative of cityworkers who used a cherry picker to raisethe flags and remove damaged ones intheir spare time.

“We could not get the flags up on thepoles, if it was not for the men in thecherry pickers,” said Tony Gallagher, commander of the 40 & 8.

The 40 & 8 appreciates the public fortheir monetary donations. A separate fundhas been created to replace tattered flags, which cost about $18 a piece. Right nowthey are in the process of changing theconnectors on the poles to prevent theflags from wrapping so badly.

“Anything we can take care of, we do,”said Stevenson.

Eventually, there will be 106 flags fly-ing. Neff plans to continue on his Thurs-day shift for as long as he is able to.

PAW'S CORNERBy Sam Mazzotta

Oxygen Hose Is No Chew ToyDEAR PAW'S CORNER: I have a 2-

year-old cat, "Annie," who loves tochew on anything plastic -- particularlymy wife's oxygen hose. How can I stopher from doing this? It gets costly. --Dave F., via email

DEAR DAVE: It's not just costly interms of replacing medical equipment, there's also the risk of Annie having toendure a costly surgery to remove bits ofplastic lodged in her digestive tract. However, it can be tough to break a catof certain habits, and many cats love tognaw at certain textures and shapes. If possible, you or your wife shouldcome up with ways to move the oxygenhose (or hoses) out of Annie's reach, ei-ther by attaching to the chair with a stripor two of medical tape or, if carryingoxygen around, by looping the excess

length of hose around the top of the tankor over one's shoulder.Another method to consider is sprayingthe exposed length of hose with a cat re-pellent. Several types are available at petstores and are used to deter cats fromclawing or gnawing things like furnitureor other fascinating protuberances. In either case, constant vigilance is stillrequired, as Annie will continue to try tobite the hose if she can get close enough(despite the presence of any stinkyspray). When she makes a move towardthe hose, distract her with a toy or bycalling her. Or, by gently picking her upand placing her in another part of theroom, ideally facing a favorite toy orscratching post on which she can takeout her energy.
