Satisfying the HungerBy Sylvia Dickson

Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty (John 6:35).

Bradley* peeked out from under the covers of his nice, warm bed. It’s true, he thought. I am at French Camp Academy and that means I’m safe, warm, and I’ll have breakfast…again. After years of wondering if he would have a meal or a blanket, he no longer wor-ries.

Guys and girls like Bradley come to FCA every year having been starved, but not just for food. Young people who have been starved by neglect, abuse, fan-tasy, and self-delusion. Motivation and hope for a good life has dwindled down to skin and bones.

Bread of HeavenYoung people come to French Camp Academy

hungry. We feed them truth, relief, love, and hope. Our desire is to satisfy their appetites with the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world (John 6:33).

When they turn away from the world’s sticky candy to the food God spreads before them, they are satisfied. Their bodies and souls are nurtured when they hear Truth:

…say to the captives, ‘Come out,’and to those in darkness, ‘Be free!’

“They will feed beside the roads and find pasture on every barren hill. They will neither hunger nor thirst, nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them. He who has compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside springs of water.

Isaiah 49:9-10

Life Is GoodGod’s goodness is evident at FCA.

He continues to provide for the needs of young people and their families through people like you. He continues to pro-vide because He is compassionate and chooses to work through us as we feed the hungry and care for the needy.

Christ spoke to his disciples on the mountain and He is still speaking to us today: Satisfied are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Satisfied are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Matthew 5:6-7

A Full PlateNot knowing where the next meal

will come from is painful. We don’t want that for anyone. Settling into a new place can be frightening and un-settling, also. Knowing the next meal will be provided, school is a safe place, everyday they can return to a clean, pleasant home, and that they are sur-rounded by people who love them brings security that loosens their bonds.

God continues to fill our plates with young people and families. When a new student arrives at FCA we fill up their plates with love and time. Meeting their emotional, spiritual, and physical needs is a responsibility as well as a privilege.

Bless This FoodTo all our readers, we say thank-you for whatever

way you support God’s mission at FCA. Whether you pray for us, send donations, refer a family, vol-unteer, or all of the above, we are blessed. The ma-jority of the student’s needs are met by people like you.

Living hand to mouth leaves little time for any-thing else. Thanks to all the people who walk with us, our students are well fed physically and spiritually. They can get on with living and growing. God is cer-tainly blessing this food at French Camp Academy. u

Voices from the past, speaking into the futureWhether we realize it or not, the past matters! What we do and say today matters!

Magneta Manual SwitchboardSpeaking of voices from the past, this Magneta Manual Switchboard is now located

at the C Spire Wireless Headquarters in Ridgeland, Mississippi. In 1947, Wade Creek-more, Sr. and his cousin, Edward Creekmore from Calhoun City, MS purchased the Calhoun City and Vardaman Telephone Companies from Ms. Willie Hipp. This switch-board was originally located in the Vardaman office. There were 38 customers on the Vardaman switchboard. It was manufactured in Nashville, TN and has a hand crank generator to call a customer. It was taken out of service around 1957.

We can all think about someone who was special in our lives and the relationship we shared with those individuals. The things that they did or said still have a lasting impact on our lives today. As I grow older, I am struck by how often I think back on my relationship with my dad. It is as if I have a video recording of our times together. I find myself replaying those times in my mind seeking to recap every ounce of wisdom, love, and direction I can from times gone by. It is interesting how we cannot see what a blessing certain people are in our lives until they are gone.

Relationships are foundational at French Camp too. Whether young or old, we all enjoy time being together—grow-ing, encouraging, and pulling alongside each other in good times and in tough times. All of us in this relationship are growing and God is using each one to bring about His purposes.

It is only Christ that can bring the true encouragement that quenches the thirst we all have. God has created us for relationship, first with Himself, and then with others. He uses relationship to reveal Himself to us.

What relationships are special to you today? Have you taken time to let that person know how thankful you are for them and how God has used them in your life? When we do this, it acknowledges we see the work of God through the person, which in turn brings great encouragement.

In our fast paced way of life, it is easy to blow through a week, month, or even years without connecting with special people in our lives. Time stands still for no one! Let us be sure we are cherishing the relationships of life every day the Lord gives us. Then, when our days are over, our voices will continue to speak into the lives of the future.

Special thanks to Wade Creekmore, Jr. for sharing this picture and history.

On April 7, 1992, Scott Kiewit began his service to French Camp Academy as a Board member. And in 2014, he is still faithfully serving. His current appointment is to the Plant and Property Committee, and he has served on the WFCA radio board.

Scott received his degree in 1977 in Farm Management from Stephen F. Austin Col-lege in Texas. In 1978 he received a one-year certification from Dallas Bible College. From 1978 until 2003, Scott served as a County Forester for the Mississippi Forestry Commis-sion. Kiewit Forestry Services was established in 2003 to assist landowners with manage-ment of their timber.

Scott and his wife, Carole Sanderson (born and raised in Laurel), make their home in Laurel, MS, and have four children, Julia, Re-becca, Mary Carole, and Robert.

I love French Camp, Scott said, because it gives children an opportunity to grow up in an atmosphere where right relationships and values can be learned because God is honored above all else. Thank you, Scott, for your diligence, faithfulness and love for FCA. u

A Satisfying Tradition: Fort Worth Mission TripFrom Team Report

Once again this year, the Lord provided the opportunity for a mission team from FCA to serve the homeless at Beautiful Feet Ministries.

After several weeks of training, the team left FCA on Wednesday, November 20, to spend five days in Fort Worth, Texas.

Each day was busy as the team led two morning worship services, served, and cleaned at meals, shared the Gospel through puppet ministry to the chil-dren, and helped with service projects.

After the worship services and meals on Friday, team members prepared hygiene packs. That evening, they went out on the streets to comfort and pray

with the homeless people as they delivered food and hygiene packs to them. One team member said, We were thankful to be of help on that cold and threaten-ing night. After leading the Sunday morning worship services, the team packed up to head home.

God blessed them with safety, good health, and many opportunities to serve. The team—19 FCA students plus 13 adults, representing 15 churches—plans to return next year.

If you are interested in supporting FCA mission activities contact Lance Ragsdale at (662) 547-6482 or [email protected]. u

Nathan Wright: Playing for KeepsBy Sylvia Dickson

I hope you’re not expecting much, was Nathan Wright’s response when someone asked him to preach one Sunday. He was coaching football and track in Ethel at the time (2000), and preaching had never been in his playbook.

Play ChangeSince the seventh grade, his dream had been to

coach at the college level. Although he had been ac-tive in church and raised in a believing family, he had not felt led to church leadership.

While in college, his preacher asked him to lead a Wednesday night service. I wasn’t comfortable, but I did it, he said. Soon, he was teaching a weekly Sunday school class. By December 2000, he told his wife, Holly, I need to do more for God…I think I want to preach.

Nathan received his Master’s in School Admin-istration from Mississippi State in 2000 and started his Bachelor of Theology at Magnolia Bible College in 2001. In March 2001, his home church, Hunts-ville Church of Christ in Choctaw County, asked him to become their preacher.

His dream of coaching was relegated to the bench

and he filled his new position of serving and leading in the church. Inspired by Mark 8:34-38, Nathan and his family delighted in doing more for God’s kingdom through preaching.

Game ChangerPreaching is now his primary ministry, but leav-

ing athletics was not easy. After several years of fo-cusing solely on preaching, he began to consider coaching again. He prayed that if there was any way he could preach and coach that God would show him.

John Cockrell, FCA principal, contacted him in ’03 about coaching. Wright said, It just didn’t feel right then. So, I said ‘no,’ and continued praying. In ’04, Cockrell called again and asked him to consider the Head Coach position for football and baseball.

This time, everything fell into place for FCA and Nathan. He accepted the position and has been coaching and ministering to FCA students as well as his congregation since then.

Coaching is a ministry for Nathan. It is a tool to grow young men. When it is done right, it can be transforming, he said. Learning to face obstacles, cope with frustrations, and put others first are a few of the challenges on the field that translate to every-day living.

In an even more intentional way, he started a TGIF program: Today God Is First. Before each practice the coaches and guys circle up for a talk about the Word. Each week, the team members are assigned a value or virtue to work on. Forging god-liness and character is an important aspect of the Wright coaching style.

Winning and LosingThe Wright’s have weathered several storms in

their lives. One of their daughters was seriously ill for a while, and then their son became critically ill. God brought them through these crises. God is mak-ing us who he wants us to be. We just follow Him and give up on what we think our life ought to look like, Nathan said.

Nathan is more appreciative of things and holds his desires more loosely. 2012’s opportunity to play in the MHSAA 1A State Championship game was the highlight of the season. This was FCA’s first time to play in that arena. Losing the game by a few points was disappointing, but measured against all the blessings, the whole school came out a winner.

Getting back to the State Championship in 2013 was a challenge. Looking back, Wright said that he wouldn’t want it any other way. It was hard fought, Wright said. We went through a lot…I guess that is the greatest part of it. Just to get through all that dif-ficulty whether it was losses, injuries or whatever we needed to work through and to come out the best team in Class 1A football is just an honor.

Playing for KeepsWright was chosen The Starkville Daily News,

The Choctaw Plaindealer, and Kosciusko Star Herald Area Coach of the Year. He has received many other honors for his coaching and feels honored to serve at FCA and Huntsville Church of Christ.

Striving and enduring challenge after challenge keeps Nathan focused on Christ. He keeps his mind and heart prepared to do more and do it better. Whether in the church, on the playing field, with his family or all by himself, Nathan Wright honors his Lord by playing for keeps. u

Faith, Family, Football

By Sylvia Dickson

Athletics at French Camp Academy is a daring field. Each season has its own fla-vor and no game is a sure thing. Just ask the 2013 football team members.

Who would a’ thought it?It was a silent ride home that fall night when

Pelahatchie trounced the FCA Panthers, 50-21. Bodies and spirits were wounded with what felt like season-ending injuries. No one on that bus thought about winning the state championship.

Hagan Box expressed the team’s sentiment well: Let’s just enjoy the season, get a few wins, and end on a positive note.

As injuries healed and with positive motivation from the coaching staff, the Panthers picked up steam. Playing the game one team at a time, a losing season turned around.

A family of faithNo one was taking anything for granted. The

campus, community, and FCA supporters near and far cautiously and humbly accepted each win as an act of God’s grace. Excitement built in fans and team members. After each game, win or lose, Coaches Wright and Hosket led the team in prayer, giving thanks to God for His gift.

As wins began to pile up, hope began to take root. Will the Panthers make it to District playoffs? Bogue Chitto was a tough team, but we won. What will happen at Lumberton? Again, we won. Next is Stringer. They beat us at State last year…

Going to JacksonDreams do come true! We played hard and went

to play in the State 1A Championship in Jackson. Our opponent—Smithville. The irony was that in 1992, the Panthers played Smithville for the North District 1A championship and were defeated.

Leaving campus to travel to Jackson, the team was surrounded by prayer. Win or lose, give God the glory. No matter the outcome, we will rejoice in what God is doing.

This was a BIG day in French Camp. Classes were cancelled and it seemed the whole town rolled out to see our boys…our family...play football.

Bringing home the trophyIt began with a slow first quarter played on that

cold, windy, rainy December day. The Panthers… exploded for 21 second-quarter

points and went on to win the game. FCA took a 7-0 lead with 11:51 left in the first half

when the Panthers closed out a six-play, 91-yard drive with a 27-yard touchdown run by Michael Erving. The drive included a 40-yard pass from Jesse Hosket

to Hagan Box and a 21-yard completion to Erving. Box gave the Panthers a two touchdown lead with an electrifying 73-yard punt return… (Austin Bishop, Choctaw Plaindealer, Dec. 2013)

And so the game played on. Smithville fought hard. But this year, on this field, the victory went to French Camp. The game ended with French Camp—27, Smithville—6. The trophy was handed to an awe-struck Coach Wright, surrounded by the exhilarated Panther team.

More than we ask or imagineJesse Hosket, Panther quarterback, put the win

in perspective: I wouldn’t have imagined it. It makes it better that (we were down so low) and came back to win it all.

The 2013 season started out with a 0-4 record and ended with 11-5 and the MHSAA District 1A State Championship for the first time in history. What’s next? With 14 seniors leaving, the next sea-son will be a great challenge. Actually each season is a challenge to live by faith and watch for God’s grace (N. Wright). Win or lose, the glory goes to God.

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen (Ephesians 3:20-21). u

Rainwater Observatory is a phenomena in itself. From its meager beginnings in the mid 1980’s, it has grown to be a well known facility offering public and private programs. The Obser-vatory now houses 24 telescopes plus other optical instruments.

The main building includes the Observa-dome Planetarium with a six-meter dome and Spitz A-2 projector. It also hosts museum exhibits, includ-ing an extensive meteorite collection, a library, a classroom and lecture hall, restrooms, and a kitchenette.

2014 Midsouth StargazeThe main event is fast approaching. The annual Midsouth Stargaze and

Astronomy Conference is coming up March 26-29, 2014! Held under one of the darkest skies in the southeastern United States and just off the beau-tiful Natchez Trace Parkway near the village of French Camp, Mississippi, this event attracts amateur and professional astronomers from all over the country.

This year’s presenters include galaxy researcher, Dr. William Keel from the University of Alabama, comet researcher, Dr. Donna Pierce from Mis-sissippi State University, exoplanet researcher Dr. Angelle Tanner from Mississippi State University, and many more!

• UTVs or “Mini-trucks” to replace currently aging mini-trucks

• Refurbish a 1996 Cat 415B Backhoe—hydraulics, paint, lights and tires—we want this past gift to last another 20 years (parts or services)

• Mini-excavator (track hoe)

• Miniature pony or horse cart

• 3 or 4 Chainsaws – A few of our saws are old and dilapidated and need replacing

• Vertical blueprint storage racks

No Boundaries for Kim BenoitBy Sylvia Dickson

Kim started out life in the small town of Ellisville, MS. Growing up, she said that she had no boundaries. She couldn’t call herself a rebel because she had nothing to rebel against. She set her own boundaries. Finally, she got her parents’ attention when she was arrested for fighting with another girl.

Even though her parents were divorced, they worked together to get her to French Camp Academy. Kim be-gan her junior year in 2009 at FCA. She was confronted daily with boundaries that revealed her arrogant spirit.

After realizing the boundaries were firm, Kim quit trying to get out and started seeing the good things around her. She saw a difference at FCA, where Christ was the hub of relationships and activities. Families loved each other asserting compassion along with expectations. She saw conflicts resolved, forgiveness extended, and relationships restored.

Before her first semester was over, God challenged her to a relationship with Him. Many people influenced her, but when Randy Martin, a house parent, spoke in chapel, she became convicted of her need for Christ. Kim said, I prayed to give the act up, let God change me, and live for Him.

Following this she became very interested in mission work and went with the FCA team to Mexico and Wales. As time passed she became focused on becoming a Bible teacher. Teachers at FCA who had trained at CIU and Dr. Milton Uecker from Columbia Inter-national University impacted her to apply to CIU. She is now a senior majoring in Bible Teaching.

Kim wants to teach middle school or high school Bible in the Southeast or at an interna-tional school. Her dream is to teach at a Christian home and school that exists to serve young people and their families for the glory of God in Mississippi. That sounds like French Camp Academy!!

God goes over and beyond what we think is possible, Kim said. Her God—our God—is a God with no boundaries. He is tearing down strongholds, building new foundations, and carrying us to places of service. We hope He eventually will carry Kim back home to FCA. u

The foundation for Taylor Home was poured in 1969. Its doors opened in 1970 with Dan and Joyce Rose as its first dorm parents. Sixteen young men found a warm, welcom-ing and loving home, thanks to W. A. Taylor and Taylor Industries of Louisville, MS.

For 43 years, Taylor Home functioned well with minor repairs and upgrades. In 2013 a major remodel took place. This newly refurbished and expanded facility welcomed the Martin’s and the Taylor Guys back home in December, 2014.

Discussions initiated by the Taylor Foundation with FCA led to the $500,000 renovation. The young men that live there know they are blessed. Sam Howard, who has lived in Taylor since 2008, said, I am thankful for the Taylor’s continued interest in FCA’s students. It’s a real privilege to spend my senior year in such an awesome home.

Sam, like many who have lived in Taylor, call it home. Hundreds of young men have laughed and cried in the rooms of Taylor since 1970. Many more will come through those doors to build a firm foundation for the future.

*W. A. (Alec) Taylor, born in 1901 in French Camp, later moved to Louisville and established Taylor Machine Works. He served French Camp Academy as Chairman of the Board in the 1950s and 60s. Taylor Home was named in his honor.

His son, W. A. “Big Red,” spoke fondly of his families’ French Camp roots. About FCA he said, To this day our family believes strongly in French Camp Academy and we help them in any way we can with contributions and prayers.*

Thank you, Taylor Foundation, for con-tinuing your legacy of serving young people at French Camp Academy.

Ken Utley Riding ArenaKen Utley was called to French Camp Acad-

emy in 1966 and retired in 2009. What a tremen-dous legacy he built while serving the LORD at French Camp! The foundation he laid while min-istering to young people will never be forgotten. For over 30 years he accumulated story after story of how young people learned responsibility, un-conditional love, and sacrificial giving by working with horses. You have to be there for the horses, says Utley. They depend on you. You can’t just go off for the weekend and forget about them. Someone has to take care of them.

Over the years the horse program developed from one horse to a few dozen. A barn was built, but then it became too small. Thanks to the gen-erosity of a special friend, Utley’s vision has grown to become not only a strategic tool for minister-ing to young people, but an organizational initia-tive to be the best horse program in the southeast, serving students, campers, staff, and visitors to our campus. For these reasons and many others, we are proud to dedicate the covered riding arena in honor of Ken Utley, a faithful man of God who sought to sacrificially serve others through horses and his life.
