Systems AND Users define performance

What determines the number of aircraft that can be handled in a sectorwithout incident?

The combination of User and System!

Why is most money spent on system safety when the majority of errorsare human related?

The interface between User and System should be optimised.

Users of ATM systems are still confronted with inhomogeneousproducts from different vendors.

Key factor is USABILITY

Page 21: FREQUENTIS PRODUCT PRESENTATION – TOWER AUTOMATION Airport Show 2014 - Dubai May 11 th 2014

What is Usability?

usability [yooza billati] – fit for use, capable of being used

«The extent to which a product can be used by specified users to achieve specifiedgoals with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction in a specified context of use.»(ISO 9241)

Usability is the measure of the quality of a user’s experience when interacting with aproduct or system.

Usability main factors:– little effort to learn

– recall and recognition

– minimised user mistakes

– subjective user satisfaction

For each system different factors are of importance

Page 22: FREQUENTIS PRODUCT PRESENTATION – TOWER AUTOMATION Airport Show 2014 - Dubai May 11 th 2014

Page: 22© FREQUENTIS 2014 Presentation Date: 2014-04-04

FRQ smartTools - Airport Show Dubai May 2014_V10.pptx Author: P.Mayo

understand functional requirements

understand operational workflow

understand the needs of the user (objective and subjective)

Cooperative workflow engineering

Reduce stress by minimising operation time and mental workload–

intuitive user interface layout

clear colour conventions

prevention of information overload

minimum key strokes

Reduce required training and the need of user manuals

How to achieve “usability”?

Provide the user with the functionality to operate the system

Why Paper Flightstrips?

Paper Flightstrips are still thecommonly used tools for flight data handling.

Paper Flightstrips have evolved for decades.

Paper Flightstrips are ergonomically proven.

Controllers are used to mentally translate PaperFlightstrips into a 3D picture (“SituationAwareness”)

Controllers are suspicious to “other” instrumentsfor flight data handling

Paper Strips can’t fail

Page 54: FREQUENTIS PRODUCT PRESENTATION – TOWER AUTOMATION Airport Show 2014 - Dubai May 11 th 2014

Why Not Paper Flightstrips?

Paper Flightstrips do notsupport real-time data flow

Flight plan data update cannot bedone (easily)

Hand-written information is lostto the succeeding workflow

Data on a Paper Flightstrips cannotbe shared.

Recurring costs of paper and stripprinter
