"...my aim in life is to make as many good pictures and drawings as I can, as well was I can. Then at the end of my life, I can hope simply to pass away while looking back with love and wistfulness, thinking 'Oh, the pictures I might have made!' But this, mind you, does not preclude doing what is possible." -Vincent van Gogh 1883 (age 30)

Painted while Vincent was in the asylum at Saint-Rémy and his behavior was very erratic at the time, due to the severity of his attacks. Painted from memory and not outdoors explain why the emotional impact of the work is so much more powerful than many of Van Gogh's other works from the same period.

Has been the subject of poetry, fiction, CD‑ROMs as well as the well known song "Vincent" or "Starry, Starry Night" by Don McLean.

by Ralph Waldo Emerson To laugh often and much;To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; To give of one's self; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived - This is to have succeeded

Of the following three sentences, one is a metaphor, one is a simile and one is an analogy. Decide which is which ?

1. Her eyes sparkle like diamonds when they catch the sunlight just right. But in the dark of the night they are just as hard and cutting.

2. Her eyes are like diamonds.

3. Her eyes are diamonds.

Page 56: Freshman Academy Mr. Kennelly. Syllabus and Classroom Policy IB intro Learner Profile Areas of Introduction Binder Name Game Bring Binder Bring Planner

Answers

1. Analogy

2, Simile

3. Metaphor

Page 57: Freshman Academy Mr. Kennelly. Syllabus and Classroom Policy IB intro Learner Profile Areas of Introduction Binder Name Game Bring Binder Bring Planner

Metaphor: A metaphor (“Her eyes are diamonds”)

is a figure of speech that uses one thing to mean another and draws a comparison between those things. A metaphor says, “A is B.” Here are a few other examples of metaphors:

· All the world’s a stage. (Thanks, Shakespeare.)

· In business, our founder was a mad dog.

· If I have a drink now, my head will be a fuzz ball for the meeting.

Page 58: Freshman Academy Mr. Kennelly. Syllabus and Classroom Policy IB intro Learner Profile Areas of Introduction Binder Name Game Bring Binder Bring Planner

SimileA simile (“Her eyes are like diamonds”) is a type

of metaphor with a twist: the comparison between the different entities is typically made with the words “like” or “as.” Whereas a metaphor says, “A is B,” a simile says, “A is like B.” A few other examples are …

· The world is like a stage.

· In business, our founder was like a mad dog.

· If I have a drink now, my head will be as unclear as a fuzz ball for the meeting.

Page 59: Freshman Academy Mr. Kennelly. Syllabus and Classroom Policy IB intro Learner Profile Areas of Introduction Binder Name Game Bring Binder Bring Planner

· Politicians are like diapers: You should change them frequently and for the same reason.

Analogies often contain similes (as this does) or metaphors, or both, but they extend them. They are not mere figures of speech. They are more like arguments or explanations. Like metaphors and similes, they draw similarities between different things – in this case, politicians and diapers – but they take it further. They imply that because the two things are alike in one way, they are alike in other ways. Here’s one last example of an analogy:

· She was the sun, brightening everyone’s existence and dazzling them with her radiance. But she’d burn anyone who came too close.
