Words of WelcomeThe Session President

Hello all,

First, congratulations. There were a huge number of really excellent applicants to be a part of this session. If you are ever in doubt about capabilities during the session, just remember that the fact that you are even here is evidence enough of your capabilities and talent. Whatever you set out to achieve for yourself, the official’s team and your dele-gates, I believe in your ability to make it happen.

My hopes for the session are essentially threefold. I want the delegates to really enjoy themselves and to be able to discuss issues which they may not be familiar with or may not have discussed before. Remember that, while we are in college and are subsidised to think about these things, the secondary school environment is very different – so this is a wonderful opportunity for your delegates. Furthermore, I want you to be able to achieve what you set out to. Decide what you want to get from the session and use the won-derful team of chairs around you to make it happen. Finally, The topic of ‘civil rights’ is one which we are inclined to take for granted; however the topics which we have selected aim to help us cover, not just the usual ground with respect to civil rights, but also to view some other topics where the civil rights angle may not been immediately obvious.

With those lofty ambitions in mind, lets make this a session to remember. Above all, enjoy yourself.

Dear officials of Fribourg 2014,

It is my great, great pleasure to welcome you to the officials’ team of Fribourg 2014 in the name of EYP Switzerland! Congratulations on writing such outstanding and brilliant applications, we couldn’t hope for a more dynamic and competent team! Before you start preparing for the session with your respec-tive teamleaders, there are three things that I would like you to take along the way: Every session is a journey, that starts when you send in your applications, culminates at the event itself and ends not at closing ceremony, but when you have come to a clo-sure with this chapter and the role you had in it. Remember to be active and mindful of your duties not only during the session, but also in the time before and after it.In this journey, although you will be focused on your tasks, your challenges, your most immediate environment and your team, a session’s success also depends on the soli-darity within the official’s team. Try to learn as many names as possible before you get to Fribourg, open up to everyone you meet and be understanding: each position is challeng-ing and everyone sometimes struggles with certain aspects of their work. It is crucial for each and every one of us to do their best and realise that the others are doing so too.Thirdly, as the motto of our lovely editors read, “the sum of the whole is more than its parts”. You are a crucial element in this whole scheme and as you were selected to be a part of this adventure, we hope that you while bear the burden of high expectations and a large amount of trust gracefully, and seize the opportunity that is given to you to and make Fribourg 2014 as rewarding as it can be.Once more thank you for accepting our open invitation to join the team of Fribourg 2014, we couldn’t be more thrilled to have you!

On behalf of the Media Team, we, the editors would like to warmly welcome you to the session. We both might be from the same country, we even graduated together, yet we were lucky enough to have been able to form such a diverse, talented and international team. The Media Team members assemble almost as many nationalities as there are journalists. Thus, we can proudly present you a genu-inely European team that will do its very best to make this session an memorable event.

We aspire the whole Media Team to further your experi-ences at the session, for we believe that our team can truly enhance your stay in Fribourg by being present from the very beginning to the end. We will not only capture photos, we want to capture moments, discuss topics and offer new opinions in order to establish a unique memory for every single participant.

With Alexander Odoevsky’s words “From a spark a fire will flare up” our quest will be to impersonate a spark through-out the session, to extract the very best aspects of an inspiring event and to conflate memories into one unity. We hope to create, materalise or even maintain the fire, that constitutes the good moments in EYP for you and therefore create something tangible to look back to when this event has passed. All this will happen in a time when the exis-tence of EYP media teams is questioned and indeed, we will attempt to prove these opinions wrong. In a nutshell, we couldn’t be more excited for what awaits all of us in Fribourg.

Dear Officials,

It is an honour to host you in the humble city of Fribourg. we would like to thank you all for the stellar applications you wrote. In fact, it was hard to make the decision. We received forty-eight applications for chairs, VPs and Editors and forty-four for the media team and you are the few appli-cants that the two panels decided to trust with the success of this session.

Fribourg 2014 was initially born like a joke after the Interna-tional Session in Zurich. It seems that dreams are not the only ones to come true. When we decided to accept this challenge and submit the bid to organise this session, we knew that there were many difficulties hiding in the dark. Nonetheless, all the members of the National Committee showed their support and we are here, now, welcoming you and we can see all the pieces coming to place.

We believe that this session will be an enriching experience for every participant. Our aim is for everyone to learn some-thing new in Fribourg and there are a lot of occasions for that, from the session theme to the bilingualism of the city that will host the session.

So, book your tickets, get prepared and see you all in Sep-tember!

The session will take place in the city of Fribourg located on both sides of the river Sarine, on the Swiss Plateau and on the cultural border between German-speaking Switzerland and Romandy (the French-speaking part).

Fribourg 2014 is the 18th National Selection Conference and therefore we will select the delegates that will represent the Swiss National Committee at International Sessions and other events in 2014 and 2015.

15 Swiss delegations, 2 Czech delegations and 1 Ukrainian one will discuss current issues related to the theme “Civil Rights in a Diverse Europe”. In total, more than 115 dele-gates will be divided into 10 committees.

The City of Fribourg

Fribourg is the capital of the Swiss canton of Fribourg and the district of Sarine and it is an important economic, administrative and ed-ucational centre. Its Old City, one of the best maintained in Switzerland, sits on a small rocky hill above the valley of the Sarine. The town was founded in 1157 and sold to the Habsburgs in 1277. The 14th century was dominated by trade, and cloth and leather production, which brought the city renown in Central Europe by 1370. In the15th century the Habsburgs ceded the city Savoy who kept it until1477.

The city and its canton joined the Swiss Confed-eration in 1481, and have long influenced Swiss and European Catholicism.

An important milestone for the politics of the city was reached in 1627, when a number of influen-tial families drew up a new constitution, in which they declared that they were the only people capable of ruling the city. The invasion of Swit-zerland by French troops in 1798 lead to the downfall of this Ancien Régime. The patricians regained control of the city in 1814 during the Restoration period. They ruled until 1830.

Fribourg was part of the 1845-1847 Sonder-bund, a “separate alliance” of Catholic cantons attempting to secede from Switzerland. Fribourg and the Sonderbund capitulated to Federalist forces 14 November 1847 in what amounted to a brief and nearly bloodless Swiss civil war. Since 1848, the new Federal constitution and the amendment to the Canton constitution have guaranteed every citizen the right to vote.

The later 19th and the 20th century brought about drastic changes to the city’s culture and physical nature. In 1848 the city wall was par-

tially torn down and a new bridge constructed across the Sarine. The opening of the midland railway line through the city in 1862 led to the development of a “railway station quarter” of the city. The improved transportation enabled Fribourg to undergo industrialisation. The city centre shifted from the Old City to the new Train Station quarter. Extensive areas in Pérolles, Beauregard and Vignettaz were developed with industry or houses around 1900. Finally, the Uni-versity of Fribourg was inaugurated in 1889.

Getting to Fribourg from the airport (by train):

You can check the SBB timetable on www.sbb.ch. You just need to enter the airport you are flying to and Fribourg as your destination. Taking the train (Bus+Train if you fly to Basel) is the easiest way to get to Fribourg from one of the three main Swiss airports. The tickets can be bought directly at the airport (prices don’t change) and you don’t need to book a seat in advance.

You can also travel to Fribourg by train. www.sbb.ch is very reli-able for international connections, too.

Accommodation

The participants will be accommodated in the civil protection shelter situated in Route de la Heitera 19, 1700 Fribourg (Ecole du Schoenberg). It is recommended to bring your own sleeping bag.

Collège Sainte-Croix

Collège Sainte-Croix has collaborated with EYP Switzerland since the foundation of the National Committee. The school will host teambuilding, committee work and Swiss Village. It is situ-ated in Rue Antoine-de-Saint-Exupéry 4, 1700 Fribourg.

University of Fribourg

The university of Fribourg has shown its support for this session. Opening Ceremony and General Assembly will in fact be held in auditoria located in Miséricorde and Pérolles, two of the main sites of the University. Part of committee work will also take place in Regina Mundi, a site next to Collège Sainte-Croix.

Important Things to Notice

CJO Dinner and Committee Dinner will not be paid for by the session. This means that you will have to carry enough money to pay for both of them. An average dinner in Swit-zerland costs around 25 CHF (ca. € 20). Payments in Euro are usually accepted but not recommended.

Expenses not covered by the Session

Accommodation prior and after the session is not set yet. We might be able to host some Officials at some Organ-isers’ place in Fribourg and we might also be able to stay at the bunkers the night the session ends. If all this were not possible, you will have to pay for your additional nights in Fribourg. The cheapest option is allegedly the Youth Hostel (http://www.youthhostel.ch/en/hostels/fribourg), which is close to the train station.
