Profiles Nick Poole - CILIP CEO - Opening Address
If you were to start with a blank sheet of paper and invent an institution that is universally accessible and
welcoming, cost-effective and positioned to support communities across a wide range of social and
economic needs it is likely you would end up designing something that looks and feels very much like a
public library. No other public service supports such a strongly diversified audience in so many different
areas of their lives.
Yet some 170 years after the first public library opened its doors and 8 years into a far-reaching
programme of austerity, there is a risk that the tremendous social and economic impact of libraries is taken
for granted. In this talk, CILIP CEO Nick Poole will draw on recent developments to explore how we can
encourage local and national policymakers and funders to take a fresh look at libraries as a platform for
social, digital and economic inclusion.

Liz White - Head of Strategy Development at the British Library - The role of
libraries in prosperity
Liz joined the British Library as Head of Strategy Development in 2013, following more than a
decade in the UK Civil Service. Liz is a member of the British Library’s Strategic Leadership Team
and worked with the Chief
Executive to publish Living Knowledge: The British Library 2015-2023, setting out the Library’s
mission to make our intellectual heritage available to everyone for research, inspiration and
enjoyment. Liz also led the development of the Living Knowledge Network, a new partnership with
21 major public libraries, the National Library of Scotland and the National Library of Wales.
Profiles
Chris Garnsworthy - Hackney Community Library Service Manager
Chris was content delivering mobile and housebound services to the elderly and disabled of
Haringey in North London when, in 2004, he was persuaded to do an MA in Information Services
Management. A reluctant mature student, it was sold to him as the chance to shape services as well
as deliver them. He now manages London’s busiest home visit service for the borough of Hackney,
and, with the support of the library service and the Council, seeks to constantly develop a library
service that reacts to the needs of service users and stakeholders alike.
Increasingly elderly and disabled people at home are admitting to loneliness and a feeling of
isolation. Especially perhaps in London, they tell of feeling unwanted in today’s high tech and fast
moving society. This presentation demonstrates how Hackney’s Community Library Service seeks
to use what libraries can offer as a means of social inclusion and be an important part of the
Council’s offer to residents who need services and care at home.

Sarah Hassan, Assistant Head of Service, Norfolk County Council Library and
Information Service.
I have worked in public libraries for over 30 years and have always loved being part of re-inventing
what they are about and what they do. I did my library training at Loughborough and have worked in
Yorkshire, Dorset, Luton and Norfolk – managing rural libraries, team working in a central library,
training and developing staff, managing projects and in the last few years having strategic
responsibilities and being on the management team in Norfolk. I have been part of the Healthy
Libraries team in Norfolk – planning our approach with Public Health partners and the staff
development to back it up. I really believe in libraries as places where we can find the routes to things
that make our lives better – health information being just one of them. I am delighted to have the
opportunity to meet people and tell them more about the project.
