Friday 16 March 2018
Dear Parents and Carers In the week where so many have rightly paid warm tribute to the inspirational work of Professor Stephen Hawking, it
has been fitting that we have marked Science and Engineering Week with a range of activities to inspire and engage
our students. Some of our students are involved, once again, in the Bloodhound Rocket project and next week we will
see how their inventions do when they are released on the tennis courts at full speed!
It was a pleasure to welcome parents of Year 8X students
yesterday evening and I know that many useful
conversations were had with regard to option choices
for next year. Year 12 have also begun thinking about
their future options with a visit to the UCAS Convention
at Surrey University this week and we hope to provide
additional support for this year group through the offer
of coaching, something which was presented to them in
PSHCE this week by our Director of Coaching,
Mrs Coombes. Those of us who have been lucky enough
to have been coached know how transformational a
process it can be and we hope that many students will
take up this offer and will also want to engage in training
to become a coach to others themselves.
Our Year 11s have worked very hard this week on their
core mock examinations; we have been very impressed
by how organised and conscientious the students have
been. It is my pleasure to be delivering a small part of
the Humanities knowledge enhancement day on Friday
to the Year 11 historians before the normal timetable
resumes for that year group on Monday. We have
trialled allowing the students to wear their own clothes
for their exams this week in a bid to ensure that they are
as comfortable as possible. We are keen to take their
feedback on this so we can make a decision about
whether we implement this change in the summer.

Teenage Emotional Well-being & Safeguarding Workshop
A reminder that this event takes place on Monday 26 March
between 6pm and 7.30pm. The aim of this evening is to offer
parents the opportunity to receive advice and support about the
safeguarding and mental health issues that affect many of our
youngsters. We will be joined by the Education Safeguarding
Advisor for Surrey County Council, Mr Ian McGraw, Advisors from
the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHs) and the
school nurse. The workshops will tackle issues such as e-safety,
mental health awareness, supporting young people with anxiety and
those students who self-harm. Please email Mrs Jenns, one of our
DSLs [email protected] if you would like to attend.
Finally, Mrs Ford and Miss Ramsay’s assemblies this week have also
been a call to our students to get involved, to take the initiative and
to pursue their dreams, even when the odds are against you. They
have shared powerful stories of the Paralympic skier, Millie Knight,
and the bobsleigh Olympians, Mica McNeill and Mica Moore and
they have concluded with a Stephen Hawking quote which I think
resonates with us all:
‘Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to
make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the
universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there
is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you
don’t just give up’
Have a good weekend.

CultureLinks Careers Fair
On Wednesday 7 March 2018, forty two Year 10 students attended the very first CultureLinks Careers Fair at
Brooklands Museum in Weybridge.
Learning On My Doorstep is a unique programme between Surrey schools and Surrey museums, galleries and arts
organisations. It is fully funded by Arts Council England and run by two of Surrey’s cultural services: Surrey Heritage
and Surrey Museums.
CultureLinks is their new career taster programme for secondary school students to raise awareness and aspirations
in young people about the wide range of careers in the cultural sector. I am very privileged to have been involved in
this new programme and to have worked alongside some amazing people.
Here Izzy Berry 10CY shares her thoughts on the event.
The day was filled with information as well as engaging
activities which wasn’t like your typical Careers Fair!
We had three talks by three different people who had
taken very different paths to end up in a job that they love. This was assuring as it showed us real examples of people
in innovating and unusual jobs. Then we went to a ‘hands on’ room which was jam-packed with activities held by
different places (museums, galleries etc.). I personally
enjoyed the station run by The Lightbox Gallery as it was
creative, enjoyable and put you in a workers position.
Finally to end the trip, we went to a more traditional
style careers fair setting with lots of captivating stands
from UCA to playing the guitar. I enjoyed the afternoon
and gained lots of information about future career
choices for me.

World Book Day 2018
‘To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a
refuge from almost all the miseries of life’ - Somerset Maugham
This year’s World Book Day focus at Rosebery was reading for well-being. Taking time out of our day for ‘redaxation’
decreases stress levels and allows us to feel calmer by helping us to switch off from worries, get better sleep and
improve confidence. Reading also helps us to understand others better and helps us face and comprehend difficult
times. In recognition of this, each day of World Book Week saw a different teacher reading from their favourite book
in the LRC at lunchtime. We also ran a creative writing competition around the theme of ‘courage’ and received a
number of impressively creative and thoughtful entries. This year’s close winners were Zoya Danayal 10MX (KS4) and
Zara Carbon 7CX (KS3). You can read their excellent entries below.
Students also rallied together to transform their classroom doors into beautiful book covers and dress up imaginatively
as their favourite book character – congratulations to Chloe Davies 7EX who won with her impersonation of
Rita Skeeter. Well done to all those who took part and remember:
‘Books are the compasses and telescopes and sextants and charts
which other people have prepared to help us navigate the
dangerous seas of human life’ - Jesse Lee Bennett

Courage by Zoya Danayal 10MX
Sunday 11th March. Two days of constant starvation and discomfort. Equipped only with a filthy bottle of water along
with a leftover tuna and sweetcorn sandwich purchased on Friday. By now, it must have gone all unpleasant – making
it most undesirable to eat. Zac looked around this new world. An unknown and hostile environment captivated his
mind. The warm salty sea spreads like a blanket for as far as the eye can see. Sparkling and glinting in the sun, tiny
waves splish and splash playfully. Shoals of colourful fish weave in and out at great speed; caught up in the ebb and
flow as the great body of water breathes in and out. In this moment they seem blissfully unaware of the great depths
and dangers that lurk just beneath them. As long as a never ending black hole the ocean continues descending into
darkness. It is the home now for mysterious and fascinating space-age creatures from another planet. Eerie silence.
A world undiscovered...
You could see in his eyes the panic of never being able to see his beloved family again; the loss he’s experiencing.
Around him not a single sight of life to be seen on this deserted island, save for ravenous seabirds circling impatiently
above Zac’s head. All hopeless – just like him.
After plucking up the courage, he stood on his sore two feet and began to consider the possibilities of surviving without
a plentiful supply of food and drink. Zac took a few courageous steps before finding himself looking ahead at a playful
and mesmerising jungle. The motivation of seeing his loved ones again kept him going. The motivation of being able
to live the next day kept him going. The motivation of a miracle kept him going. The more he was occupied by this
emotional thought not only made him feel more courageous, but also unstoppable. He was ready. Before long, Zac
was completely consumed in the spell of the jungle. What he didn’t know, though, was the surprises the jungle would
bring…
As the scorching sun began to set, Zac reappeared from the depths of the forest. Something about his new appearance
shone through his body. He looked different from who he was earlier. Entirely different. He frantically ran straight
for the ocean – where I was hiding. Sweat trickled down his tomato-red face as he desperately cleansed his arm with
seawater. But why was he doing this? And then I realised.
His bare arm was showered in blood. His blood. As he rapidly dipped his arm into the water, stains of it consumed
the innocent ocean. It was a most horrific sight; my home was being destroyed. I had to do something about this
intolerable behaviour. Without thought, I swam straight towards him and finally revealed myself to the upper world.
His response was very interesting.
At first, he didn’t even realise my presence but then, as soon as he noticed me – watching him closely and carefully,
he gave a shriek and bounced back abruptly. He wasn’t expecting such a surprise as this, I don’t think he has ever seen
a dolphin in his life before. Slowly and cautiously, he walked back to his filthy bottle of water and his leftover tuna
and sweetcorn sandwich. He picked them up while still fixing his eyes on me. With great strength and aim, he threw
them towards me so as to get rid of me. He was no longer hungry.

My Dreams
by Zara Carbon 7CX
I lay in bed and rested my head,
To fall into dreams, indescribable dreams, that clouded my thoughts.
A set of minds, so powerful and divine, Will I ever awake?
A tiger will roar, a kitten will purr
But will I ever stir? From this magical place, that will not allow me to arise
From the heart of my hollow mind.
The darkness in night The blinding of light,
They trap me in a cage So cold and dark. Where my nightmares devour me.
A tiger will roar, a kitten will purr
But will I ever stir? From this magical place, that will not allow me to arise
From the heart of my hollow mind.
I think I am alive Or am I truly dead?
One cannot tell in a dream. When one’s mind controls them instead.
I run through pastures
Bright and green. I run and run,
But it is still following me.
Tears sting my eyes, I watch the sun rise, hoping to escape this prison I once
called a sanctuary. Alas, there is no escaping this memory. This memory in which once was pure.
A tiger will roar, a kitten will purr But will I ever stir?
From this magical place, that will not allow me to arise From the heart of my hollow mind.
I trip on the ground, my ankles ache
The monster is here. It is above me, towering over me.
But, I do not flee in fear.
A tiger will roar, a kitten will purr But will I ever stir?
From this magical place, that will not allow me to arise From the heart of my hollow mind.
This monster once took me
To a land of despair But it no longer scares me,
Not here.
I raise to stand. And I hold my ground.
It asks; “Why do you stand so tall and proud, when facing nightmares himself?”
And I reply: “Because why should I be afraid? You are only a dream, an imaginary terror. I am not scared
anymore.”
And so, the monster departs, Leaving me with only my thoughts.
Suddenly I feel like a cloud, floating in the blank blue sky.
Then I’m back in my bed, the morning light glowing through the window.
I smile.
If I ever feel afraid, Even in my own mind. Hope, Bravery and Courage
Can give me strength, to escape My Dreams.
