PURIM ON SUNDAY PARSHAT ZACHOR (Shabbat 11 March) Parshat Zachor (Deuteronomy 25:17) is read on the Shabbat prior to Purim. It is a Biblical obligation for all males above bar mitzvah to hear the reading of Parshat Zachor in the presence of a minyan. Women should make every effort to hear the laining as well. Those listening to the reading of Zachor must have in mind to fulfil their obligation through the ba'al koreh. The latter must have in mind that the listeners will be yotze through him. TA’ANIT ESTHER (Thursday 9 March) The Fast of Esther commemorates the fast assumed by the Jewish people prior to battle. The fast is normally observed on 13 Adar or 11 Adar (Thursday) as this year when Purim occurs on Sunday. Every healthy person should fast on Ta’anit Esther. Avinu Malkenu and Tachanun are not recited during Mincha (except when Ta’anit Esther is commemorated on 11 Adar as this year). Machatzit Hashekel: It is customary for every male above the age of 20 (or 13 according to various opinions) to contribute 3 half dollars to tzedakah (commemorating the half shekels contributed to the Temple at this time of the year) prior to Mincha on Ta’anit Esther [even when commemorated on the previous Thursday (Kaf Hachaim, Siman 694 s”k 23)] – or on the morning of Purim day. A special plate is left in the Mizrachi shules for this purpose. PURIM NIGHT (Saturday 11 March – 14 Adar) Kriat HaMegilah: All adults (post bar/bat mitzvah age) and children having reached an educable age, must hear the Megilah in shule in the presence of the largest minyan possible. The night’s reading may commence immediately after tzeit hakochavim (halachic nightfall) and may be read until dawn. When Purim coincides with Motzei Shabbat, please remember that no preparations whatsoever may be done prior to the conclusion of Shabbat including changing into costumes or bringing a Megilah to shule, etc. The morning reading may commence with sunrise and may be fulfilled until sunset. THE BRACHOT • Al Mikra Megilah • Sheasa Nissim • Shehechayanu Both the reader and listeners should stand during the recitation of the blessings. The listeners should concentrate to fulfil their obligations and the reader must do the same on their behalf. It is requested not to talk throughout the reading. One not possessing a KOSHER Megilah should not read along with the reader, but should listen in silence. Whereas it is customary to create noise when the name of Haman is read, children should be brought to the reading of the Megilah if they can sit properly next to their parents without disturbing the minyan. PURIM DAY (Sunday 12 March – 14 Adar) Purim Dress: Since Purim has so many of the “simanim” (tell-tale signs) of Yom Tov eg a Hallel-like expression of thanks expressed through reading the Megilah (Tractate Megilah 14a), Kriat HaTorah and Seudah (in distinction to Chanukah), our Purim attire should appropriately reflect this as well. Mishloach Manot: On Purim day every adult Jewish male and female must send at least two varieties of food requiring no further preparation to another individual. The foods may be canned, solid, liquid, etc. Mishloach Manot delivered on Purim night, does NOT fulfil one’s obligation.

Two or more people may send a single Mishloach Manot (during the day), assuming the amount sent is double the usual quality and worth. Mishloach Manot should be delivered via messenger if possible. One who is in mourning is required to send Mishloach Manot, but may not receive from others. Matanot Le'Evyonim: On Purim day every adult (male & female over bar- and bat-mitzvah age) must give money or food to at least two needy individuals. This amount should be sufficient for the recipient to purchase a Purim Seudah meal consisting of meat and wine/beer. The Poskim state that more money should be spent on Matanot Le’Evyonim than on Mishloach Manot and one’s own Seudah (Mishnah Berurah 694:3). Please give your matanot le’Evyonim to the office early enough so that it can be distributed as required on Purim. Seudat Purim: The festive meal is normally begun after Mincha and should be eaten primarily before sundown. (Rema, Orach Chaim 695:2). This year, 5777/2017 sundown is 7:44pm). The meal should be celebrated in a Yom Tov fashion: meat, wine, candles, etc. Birchat Hamazon, recited after dark but before ma’ariv having been davened, should include Al Hanissim. Prayers: Al Hanissim is inserted into the S'hmoneh Esrai and Birchat Hamazon. If one forgot to recite it in its proper place (as specified in all siddurim) and recited the berachah following them, he does not return to the beginning nor repeats the Amidah. Drinking: Whereas it has long been customary for some within Klal Yisrael to become intoxicated on Purim, drinking was never permitted to legislate or sanction behaviour unfitting for B’nai Torah. Therefore one must regulate his alcoholic intake and that of those around him. Sleep brought about by moderate wine intake fulfils this obligation. (Rema, Orach Chaim 695, se’if 2) Yahrzeits

• Yahrzeits should be commemorated in Adar in a non-leap year for a relative who passed away in either Adar of a Jewish leap year.

• The period of mourning by a child concludes after twelve months, even if the previous year had two Adars. Therefore, if one suffered a loss, חו"ש, of a parent in Adar 2, the 12 months would conclude in Shvat the following year and the 11-month kaddish would conclude in Tevet.

Matanot Le’Evyonim The mitzvah of Matanot Le’Evyonim, providing the equivalent of a Purim meal for two individuals on Purim day, was always understood by the poskim as being even more important in priority than the monies spent on our Mishloach Manot and personal seudot. Each person above the age of Bar/Bat Mitzvah is supposed to contribute this amount. As has been the practice for years, Mizrachi will distribute Matanot Le'Evyonim on Purim day to Aniyei Ha’Ir (local needy people) and to Aniyei Eretz Yisrael (needy people in Israel). Please bring your monies to the office as soon as possible, place the monies in the baskets already available on the bimah in Bet Yehuda and Bet Midrash or ring through your credit card details on 8317-2555 so funds can be distributed on Purim day itself, as per the Halachic requirement, and please give generously. Remitting the monies earlier than the morning of Purim enables us to distribute appropriately with greater pre-thought and ease.

Dvar Hashlicha

Dear Chavrei Bnei Akiva, We are eager to start our first Bnei of the year. After an intense and incredible Madrichim – Seminar, our 67 Madrichim are looking forward to meet their Chanichim and to educate our Bnei kids according to the values of Torah, Avodah and Aliya!

I’m happy to welcome our new Hahnalla- Yaniv Cohen (Merakez), Ezra Herszberg (Sgan), Joel Chester (Gizbar) and wish them הצלחה רבה and great achievements this year.

I would also want to congratulate our extensional leadership body- the Hanhaga- Sam Brygel (Rosh Chinuch), Romy Schneeweiss (Rosh PR), Nat Hayman (Rosh Events), Gabe Casper (Rosh Maon), Yasmin Schwarz and Gidon Waller (Roshei Minyan). We already had our first meeting and I am confident this crew will do wonders!

A moment before we dive into 2017, it is my honour to acknowledge our phenomenal leadership body of 2016. Bnei Akiva 2016 was a very successful year. Our numbers grew, plenty of new initiatives were implemented and we received very positive feedback from Chanichim, Madrichim and the entire community. This couldn’t have happened without our dedicated Merakez, Nathaniel Pizmony and ZeeCee Vorchheimer (Sgan), Yoel Dodge (Gizbar), Hadar Slonim (Rosh Chinuch), Josh Jones (Rosh Events), Jacob Joel (Rosh PR), Ari Josefsberg (Rosh Maon) and Benny Menahem (Rosh Minyan). Yashar Koyach and הצלחה רבה on your next chapter.

Past

Daniel Simons z”l – We were very sad to have lost a dear friend over summer break. Daniel was an exceptional Madrich, and volunteered to many roles within Bnei Akiva. We had a Limmud in his memory for the Shloshim and we are having all kind of initiatives to remember who he was and to illuminate the world from the darkness that has been left behind due to Daniel’s passing. We are also working

closely with professional therapists in order to build a plan that could help us as a movement work better with mental health issues.

Summer Camps – Our summer camps were an extraordinary success, and parents were telling us weeks later how their children were having deep discussions at Shabbat meals about things that came up at camp. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Roshei Machane Mel Perch, Shuki Wyman and Ezra Herszberg, our Roshei Tochnit Daniel Kalkopf, Roni Froumine and Shoshana Gottlieb (Sydney).

Present

Coming towards the first Bnei of the year, we would like to welcome the new year 3 chanichim and wish them a Derech Tzlecha in a long and meanigful journey in Bnei Akiva. This Shabbat we will be meeting with the parents of the year 3

Chanichim at 17:00, half an hour before Mifkad. This is for parents who couldn’t make it to the Info night we had this past week. Come meet the Mads!

Mishloach Manot – the Mishloach Manot project is running. As every year, we are happy to deliver for the community Mishlochei Manot. Check out our website:

Ma Chadash?

Our Ma’on – Renovations: Since Bnei Akiva is growing and growing, the need

for a functional and usable structure is necessary. We ran a campaign for raising

money and have had renovations in the Ma’on. As always, friends of Bnei Akiva

have come to stand by Bnei Akiva and gave generous amounts, and in the next few

days, B”H, we will be finished, with brand new rooms awaiting the Chanichim.

Thank you to all the contributors that made this possible!!! Special thanks goes out to Benji

Jotkowitz, Pninah Lissauer and Pat Levy for dreaming with us and bringing it into reality.

Roshei Minyan – In the recent AGM we had a week ago, a resolution was passed that we will have

two Roshei Minyan in Bnei Akiva, as a trial run. As we believe that a Rosh Minyan is not only a

Gabai, but also someone who looks to find ways to connect Chanichim and Madrichim to Tfillah,

we also believe that this role needs leaders on both sides of the Mechitzah. Our new Roshei

Minyan: Yasmin Schwarz and Gidon Waller are thrilled to take on the challenge and are planning

a year full of uplifting and spiritual events.

Megillah Reading for Women by women – With much joy, we are happy to invite women to a

special Megillah reading at the Bnei Akiva Shlichim’s house on Sunday morning at 8:30am. We are

looking forward to seeing many Chanichot, Madrichot, Mothers and Grandmothers.

ושבו בנים לגבולם – On a personal note, we, Moriah, Shlomo, Hallel, Ro’i and Eden, the Shlichim of

Bnei Akiva, will be going home in July after completing 3 years of Shlichut here in Melbourne. We

are looking forward to make these last few months the most significant months so far. We received

so much love and support from this beautiful community and are trying to reciprocate that back as

best we could.

Rina Pushett z”l was a long-standing and dedicated member of Emunah who had a special interest in the area of women’s education. In her

capacity as Education officer of Emunah she introduced many initiatives including the annual summer Shabbat shiurim, which are now

respectfully dedicated to her memory.

As Purim is fast approaching, and your thoughts are turning to Mishloach Manot, we present you with an

alternative.

Increasingly, friends and supporters of the Mizrachi

Charity Fund are choosing to make donations to the fund in lieu of Purim gifts after performing the Mitzvah.

These donations enable us to continue our assistance to families in our local community who are experiencing

difficulties.

Join us on a FREE 10 day trip to Israel There has been a lot of Israel talk these past few weeks and being the ZFA, we’re pretty happy about it.

But wait, there's more... We have FREE 10 day trips on our Taglit-Birthright Israel Hagshama buses.

Our Hagshama buses are leaving this JULY and we want you on it!! If you are 18-26* (and make all the other eligibility requirements) then please apply and come EXPERIENCE Israel for yourself. www.israelprograms.com.au

If you know people who meet the criteria, here are just a few of them: -

1. 18 - 26 years old

2. Jewish heritage

3. Haven't participated in an educational Israel program over age 18

There are a couple more but read the fine print and if you are one of these lucky

people or know someone who may be, then be a mate and tell them all about this

incredible opportunity.

Ten years ago Monash University and a number of community organisations undertook the “Gen08” survey, the most comprehensive research ever conducted on the profile and attitudes of Australia’s Jewish community. This year’s “Gen17” survey seeks to measure the extent of change in the outlook and priorities of Jewish Australians. It will make possible an in-depth understanding of the current views and needs of Jewish Australians. We want to make sure the <<insert organisation name>> community is properly represented in the “Gen17” survey, so we’re asking you and your staff to complete it, if you haven’t already done so.

Begin The Survey Now To fill in the survey:

• Enter your email address on this page • You will be sent a unique password within a few minutes • Follow the link to begin. It should take around 20 minutes

You can read more about the survey on the Monash website, as well as an FAQ about “Gen17”. We’re proud of the community we are building in Australia and hope you are too. Please consider filling in the “Gen17” survey and then forwarding this message to your staff, colleagues and family to make sure our voice is heard.
