Equally engaging was our Year 10 Ethics Day, which encouraged students to challenge themselves with some very contemporary ethical dilemmas. Finally, at the end of this very busy week, we were pleased to welcome our latest visitors from abroad; 40 Japanese students will be attending lessons for the next two weeks and, as ever, the Rosebery buddies from across the school have made them feel very welcome indeed. It has been a pleasure to welcome many parents into school this week. We were delighted to work with those of you who joined us for our Year 11 Revision Evening on Tuesday, where we shared some strategies for maintaining emotional well-being, planning revision, accessing technology to support exam study and methods of making effective revision notes. We shall put all the presentations on the website very shortly. On Wednesday, Year 8 and 9 musicians contributed to a fantastic concert and on Thursday many of you, whose daughters are identified as Potential High Achievers, engaged in a carousel of activities which I hope gave a greater understanding of their classroom experience. Finally, we look forward to welcoming many of you to the PSA Quiz Night this evening. Grateful thanks to Mrs Broome and her team for organising such a great event and to all of you for your support of this vital fundraiser. At Rosebery we take the safeguarding of our students in all contexts very seriously. I am a member of the Local Authority Safeguarding Board and this group have asked schools to remind you of some key safeguarding principles related to the employment of private tutors, something I know that many Rosebery parents choose to do. Ideally, you should use an established company to source the tutor but, if you choose someone who is independent, they should have DBS clearance, they should have excellent references from independent sources and ideally you should be able to keep an eye on the 1-1 tutoring session. As ever, in almost all cases, there is absolutely nothing to be concerned about, however it is always best to exercise appropriate caution when determining who to employ. On a similar theme, it is worth reiterating the need to monitor with whom your daughter is communicating over the internet and for her to leave her phone downstairs before she goes to sleep. This will hopefully help them resist the temptation of late-night messaging, which if nothing else, has a really detrimental effect on the quality of sleep achieved. I think we could all benefit from a digital detox now and again! Have a lovely weekend. Ros Allen @RoseberyHT

Students’ French and Spanish Work Experience “This half term, I went on a Halsbury Work Experience Trip to Metz in France. I worked in a restaurant in town called the Brasserie L'Eden. It was scary to arrive there and be expected to speak in French to people I had never met but everyone was so nice - including the people who worked in the restaurant and the other students on the trip. In the morning, we had to get ourselves to our different placements and we would meet up afterwards in the evenings. The week was very good for my French: I was surrounded by hearing it all day and really had to use it to talk to the customers and waiters (except for sometimes when they wanted to practise their English!). Not only that, but it was also a really fun way to spend half term, with new people somewhere I had never been before. I would definitely recommend the Halsbury trip to anyone studying a language - it's a really good challenge and you will enjoy it!” Juliet Martin

“Over half term, I was lucky enough to spend a week in Segovia, doing work experience in a local primary school to

improve my Spanish. It was an incredible experience to be able to help out in lessons taught in Spanish and see how

things are run in a typical Spanish school, and I met some amazing people as well. On one day, I was able to accompany

the children on a school trip around the city of Segovia, a beautiful place located in the Castilla y León region of Spain,

not far from Madrid – it was lovely to be able to see the monuments of the city and I learned a lot. The whole week

was very enjoyable and I’d definitely recommend the trip to anyone wanting to have an authentic experience of

Spanish culture and improve their language skills.” Spanish Student

Rosebery Students took part in Sports Relief A number of Rosebery girls who belong to Focus Netball Club were involved in the England Netball Sports Relief World Record attempt on Sunday 14 February. England Netball did break the world record and the event raised in excess of £20,000 for Sport Relief, so it was great for the girls to be part of it. Comic Relief Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Cahill, added: “We’re very proud to be working with England Netball for Sport Relief and it’s been great to see so many netball players and fans from around the UK get involved in this record breaking event. This is exactly what Sport Relief is all about, bringing the entire nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives.” Further details of this amazing challenge can be found by following this link to England Netball webpage: http://www.englandnetball.co.uk/news-and-media/latest-news/netballers-smash-world-record-for-sport-relief-id70d48264-a321-42d5-9c4f-063465b4f642 The Rosebery PE Department are very proud of all the girls who took part in this challenge and wish to congratulate them all.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO PARENTS It has come to my attention that a small number of students have been partaking in a new internet craze known as the ‘fainting game’. (Please research this for further information). I have spoken with the whole Year 9 group about the serious dangers of this craze and do not foresee any further problems with these students trying this at school. Kindly speak with your daughter and, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you,

Rosebery Alumnae Event

We look forward to welcoming back our Rosebery Alumnae on Wednesday 9 March. The response has been fantastic

for this event, which is testament to the values of Rosebery not forgotten by our ex-students. The evening will be a

wonderful opportunity for past students to reminisce, visit their old classrooms and share their valuable experiences

with our current students in Years 11 and 13. This is also an opportunity for our current students to seek work

experience and students’ advice on universities and courses.

Do you know any ex-students who left Rosebery in Years 11 or 13 within the last 10 years? Please inform them of

our forthcoming Alumnae Event, the full details are on our website: http://www.roseberyschool.co.uk/our-

school/rosebery-alumnae/

Can you help? Are you an employer or employee who may be able to offer one of our students a work placement within your company? With many employers now looking for experience as well as academic achievements work placements have an increasing importance for students progressing into their chosen career. Work experience gives students the opportunity to learn about the world of work, gain employability skills, increase confidence and make them stand out on their personal statement and CV. Our Year 12 students are going out on work experience from 11-15 July 2016. If you feel that you can offer some meaningful work experience to some of our students that would put their curriculum learning into practice, I would love to hear from you. Please email me on [email protected], Mrs F Keaveney.
