‘Maximum Effort for
Maximum Achievement’
Friday 9th November 2018
Diary Dates for Next Week School Dinners - Week 3 - NEW MENU
National Anti-Bullying Week Tuesday 13th November
Year 4 Open Door Event at 2.15pm Friday 16th November
Children in Need Charity Day Saturday 17th November
Christmas Bazaar: 2pm - 4pm
We’ve had another fun-filled week, with a non-uniform day to add to the excitement! Thank you for supporting today’s House
Colours event and bringing in lots of items for our various tombolas! Don’t forget to bring items in for the Year Group
colour competition - this is hugely competitive as a non-uniform day, during the last week of term, is up for grabs!
Parents’ Evening It was great to see so many parents at our meetings on
Monday and Wednesday. I hope that you found the meetings helpful. Just a reminder that, if you would like
further details regarding your child’s progress in maths or have any questions for their maths teacher, the Maths
‘Drop In’ meetings are on Monday 19th November. Please indicate your preferred time slot on the slip. We will only contact you if the slot you have selected is very busy - I would imagine the first slot will be popular and could
result in a large queue so it might be advisable to pick a later slot if at all possible.
Jacket Potato Lunch Yesterday several members of staff and I attended the termly ‘Jacket Potato Lunch’ at Christ Church. Once
again the food was delicious and many of us also took advantage of the opportunity to purchase homemade
cakes! We would like to thank the volunteers who gave up their time to run the event - all the money raised goes to
the Schools Ministry Billericay team. As you are probably aware, the Schools Ministry team are regular visitors at
Buttsbury so it’s lovely to be able to give something back in return! If you haven't had a chance to go before, look out for the flyers next term, and why not pop along - it
certainly beats having to prepare your own lunch!
Remembrance Day Our Monday morning assembly introduced this week’s
theme of ‘Remembrance’ with the children finding out more about the Poppy Appeal and its significance.
On Wednesday, the Panthers’ House Captains, with the assistance of some fellow Panthers, led our assembly and
explored the impact of war on ordinary people, such as fishermen, artists, footballers and poets! The children
presented with great confidence and captivated the children in their audience admirably. Well done to Laura and Cem
and also to Daisy and Harry who assisted! As Remembrance Day falls on a Sunday when we are not at
school, we will be remembering all those who have been affected by wars in the past and those who are
affected by current conflicts in the world by observing two minutes’ silence, on Monday, as a mark of respect.
Thank you very much for supporting this year’s Poppy Appeal. We were able to return several weighty collection
boxes.
Children in Need 2018 - Reminder! To help raise money for Children in Need, on Friday 16th November children are invited to wear something spotty, something related to Pudsey or pyjamas to school (these
were all the children’s choices) for a suggested donation of £1. There is no need to wear any uniform items! The staff, as decided by the children, will be wearing school uniform! We will also be hosting a Pudsey Bake Off competition so
we invite children to bake some yummy cakes for us to sell, preferably linked to the Pudsey-theme and there will be a winning Star Baker in each year group. We will also be holding a competition to ’Design a Friend for Pudsey’
which is £1 per entry - again, there will be a winner from each year group. Our final fundraising activity is the sale of Children in Need merchandise - pin badges and wrist bands
- for £1 each. It sounds like an exciting day is ahead!
Year 4 ‘Open Door’ Afternoon If you have a child in Year 4, you are very warmly invited
to join them in their classroom on Tuesday 13th November from 2.15pm - 3.00pm. You will have a
chance to experience life inside a Year 4 classroom and get a flavour of some of their recent activities - you may
even have the opportunity to join in! As this is an informal, experiential afternoon, children’s books won’t ordinarily be
available but there will be lots of work on the display boards for you to enjoy. Please could we ask that you
don’t bring pre-school children along as the classrooms will be very full. Please could you come in via the front
entrance and sign in when you are in your child’s classroom. Thank you and we hope you can join us!
School Choirs - Christmas Bazaar The children in our two school choirs will be singing during our Christmas Bazaar. Our Year 5/6 choir will perform at 2pm and the Year 3/4 choir will
perform at 3pm. Please meet in the main hall 5 minutes before the scheduled performance time. There is no need to wear school uniform but please wear a
Christmas hat if you have one!

Parish Cup On Thursday, the Year 6 Boys Football Team played their first
match of the Essex Schools 9-a-side Parish Cup against Sunnymede. As anticipated, this was a closely contested
tie. Buttsbury were 1 - 0 up just minutes from half time, only to see Sunnymede equalise a minute later. The boys battled
hard for every ball in the second half and had several opportunities to score before they unfortunately conceded a
second goal against the run of play. Well done to all the boys in the squad,. Thank you to our many supporters who braved the
muddy conditions and to Ms Marshall, our coach.

Midday Assistant Vacancies We are still looking to recruit Midday Assistants to join our
lovely team! We have a variety of days available so we could be very accommodating regarding other
commitments. If you are interested in joining our team, please contact Mrs Byfield in the School Office.
After-School Collection Arrangements Please can we ask you to make sure your child is aware of the collection arrangements for them after school, e.g. who
is picking them up and from which gate. The Administration Team members are receiving a huge number of phone calls
every afternoon with changes to plans which need to be relayed to children, such as ‘meet me at the back gate rather
than the front gate’. The messages take time to deliver which then puts pressure on the team, as they are a ‘man’ down. Please can we ask that you only phone the office in emergency situations regarding collection arrangements.
Thank you, in advance, for your assistance with this.
Cycle Helmets A number of staff members have noticed Buttsbury children
riding their bikes after school without wearing a helmet. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents stated, in May 2018, that ‘one way to prevent or reduce the extent of a
head injury in a cycle accident is to wear a helmet.’ Whilst I appreciate that some children are reluctant to wear helmets, it would be great if they could be encouraged to
wear a helmet as, after all, it is better to be safe than sorry!
Viking Invasion Yesterday Year 6 were visited by our very own Vicious
Viking. Our visit from Portals to the Past gave the children an insight into the daily life for Vikings - starting with the
reasons for invasion and settlement, their notoriety in battle and how villages were run.
Throughout the day, the classes took part in four activities, including a Viking quiz, typical Viking game and artefact handling. In the afternoon, the children were treated to a
weapon demonstration which the children were captivated by. Year 6 had a fantastic day and learnt a lot about the
Vikings in a very memorable way.
Learning Support Assistant Vacancy We are looking to appoint reliable, flexible and
hardworking Learning Support Assistant to join our friendly team to support a child in Year 3. The hours are: 8.40am - 12.00pm, Monday - Friday. Please contact Mrs
Byfield, in the School Office, for further details.
This week’s winning house: Jaguars
Top Table This week, the children chosen by the Midday Assistants to join me at the ‘Top Table’ were:
Megan Mecham Lana Webb
Daisy Spencer Jacob Pierce
Jack Warren-Gunn Well done for being selected!
Afternoon Tea Something I noticed during last week’s Celebration Assembly is that the
draw for Afternoon Tea evokes a very high level of excitement amongst the children which is great as it shows how much they look forward to being
able to come along to this event. As we are well into the term now, the range of work is getting more and more diverse and the children are becoming
ever-more confident when asking each other questions about chosen work.

‘Parents to Lunch’ Event On Thursday, the parents and grandparents of the children in 3M joined us for lunch! It was lovely to welcome so many visitors to
the school and see everyone enjoying the tasty meal. Thank you very much to all the staff who played a role in
facilitating this event.
Book Fair On Tuesday, we once again hosted a half price book sale in the Small
Hall. As well as each class having had the opportunity to visit the book fair during the school day, the book fair was also open after school. The
fair was extremely well supported and we, for the first time in many years, took over £1000 during the day! This meant that we were able to choose £200 worth of books as commission which is a fantastic amount of money. Thank you to all the children and parents who supported our
book sale. The books selected will be a welcome addition to the classroom libraries.
