LeShorn Benjamin, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Educational Leadership, has been recognized for not one, but TWO special achievements from within the CMU community. In May of 2018 LeShorn was awarded the inaugural Educational Leadership Faculty Endowed Scholarship award. The award amount is $800, will be given annually, and can be used for travel, tuition, or professional development. LeShorn was selected from a group of highly qualified students who applied with the winning submission chosen by a team of EDL faculty.

In her essay she writes, “Since my dissertation research aims to provide insights and support for the diverse career aspirations of doctoral students, there is no question that the findings of this study can be used to enhance the structure of EDL’s doctoral programs and the instruction students receive.” In LeShorn’s case

she will be using the funds to advance her education here at CMU.

LeShorn was also awarded the 2018 Robert Newby Award for Diversity Efforts at the Annual Student Research and Creative Endeavors Exhibition (SCREE). The fund recognizes the diversity-related work completed by up to three undergraduate student projects and one graduate student project per year. The activity must be linked to a credit‐bearing academic experience at CMU which involves research, creative activity and the application of findings. Congratulations to LeShorn on these well-deserved awards!
