001. Course 01. Service-Learning: Engaging Students and Community in Sociology and Social Change

College This Pre-conference course will begin with introductions and evaluate expectations and levels of previous engagement with service-learning. The leaders will then present a brief history and overview of definitions and best practices, in part determined by audience expectations. We will then ask participants to quickly outline a service learning course design (either one they have taught already or one they are considering—in mapping out the course and projects, we want participants to consider the strengths and weaknesses and what they perceive as the opportunities and challenges they will face). At this point, we will choose at least one previously taught class and one new one to workshop as a group (more if time permits), discussing aspects of learning outcomes and assessment, community impact and sustainability, etc. We'll conclude with a brief discussion about the "future" of service-learning and current debates and controversies about partnerships, student engagement, service versus research, and developing a social justice paradigm.

002. Course 02. Working With Fuzzy Sets Caesars Palace Las Vegas

Ragin, University of Arizona Fuzzy set analysis is gaining popularity in the social sciences today because of the close connections it enables among verbal theory, substantive knowledge (especially in the assessment of degree of set membership), and the analysis of empirical evidence. Fuzzy sets are especially useful in case-oriented research, where the investigator has a degree of familiarity with the cases included in the investigation and seeks to understand cases configurationally—as specific combinations of aspects or elements. Using fuzzy-set methods, case outcomes can be examined in ways that allow for causal complexity, where different combinations of causally relevant conditions combine to generate the outcome in question. Also, with fuzzy-set methods it is a possible to evaluate arguments that causal conditions are necessary or sufficient. Analyses of this type are outside the scope of conventional analytic methods. Specific topics addressed in the course include: the differences between set-theoretic and correlational methods; conventional crisp sets versus fuzzy sets; the calibration of fuzzy sets; how calibration differs from conventional forms of measurement; analyzing fuzzy set relations; the correspondence between concepts and fuzzy set membership scores; the correspondence between theoretical statements and the analysis of fuzzy set relations; using fuzzy sets to study cases as configurations; and using fuzzy sets to unravel causal complexity, with a special focus on the equifinality. In all phases of the course, participants will work with fsQCA, a free Windows software package designed for fuzzy set analysis and for Qualitative Comparative Analysis. fsQCA can be downloaded from www.fsqca.com.

Given the diverse traditions involved and the differences of the speakers' personalities, the papers will no doubt vary greatly. But they may cover topics like what traditions are in the first place, how and whether one gets associated with a tradition, what are the advantages and disadvantages, merging or shifting one's tradition-identity, and so on. Beyond that loose agenda, the speakers are on their own. Our aim is to provide an entertaining but substantive opening to the meeting.

Located at the intersection of multiple dimensions of inequality, the housing arena is understandably rife with conflict. A house may be at once a basic necessity, a source of personal meaning, a commodity, and a gateway—shaping access to education, health care, social networks, and labor markets. Conflict arises between constituencies with competing claims to housing spaces and opposing interests in the use and exchange of housing. There is conflict between residents and the myriad institutions that regulate housing. Housing is a prime domain of domination and resistance for groups divided by class, race, ethnicity, nativity, gender, family structure, and other statuses. The recent financial crisis highlights the range of conflicts that infuse the housing arena. Instances of struggle and confrontation are manifested in foreclosures, evictions, squatting, public housing, residential segregation, discriminatory real estate and lending practices, gentrification, and suburban poverty, to give but a few examples. This session brings together academic and policy experts to explore diverse forms of housing conflict in a time of economic uncertainty.

Panelists discuss whether there is, and if not, whether there should be a specifically sociological approach to the study of war. The current disciplinary division of labor assigns sociology the role of understanding the consequences of war (for state-building, revolutions etc.), while political science focuses on explaining wars as an outcome in itself. Is this a satisfactory division of labor? Or is there a particular empirical point of view or even theoretical approach that differentiates sociological from the dominant political science approaches to the study of war? What would the contours of such an approach (or approaches) look like?

Postcolonial Africa has been wracked by conflict. Labels such as "failed states" and "uncivil societies" dominate the Africanist literature as the tone of much scholarly writings have grown ever more pessimistic. More recently however, the activism and increasing power and representation of women in political institutions in a number of post-conflict societies provide a welcome counter narrative. The panelists will examine the economic, social and political conditions of conflict and violence from the perspective of the degrading of the nation-building project. The gendered experiences of war and post conflict transformation will provide another template as the panelists examine the prominent role of women in peace and nation building in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Uganda. The gendered experiences of children at war and its implications for international human Rights and Justice projects are some of the issues to be examined.

Discussant: George M. Thomas, Arizona State University Master globalization narratives depict its consequences as exacerbating global inequalities or as rationalizing a new world system. Global integration due to climate change -which links factory workers in China with coastal communities in the Gulf of Mexico and carbon finance experts in London with slum activist in Cape Town - challenges such master narratives. On the one hand, current management processes in the global climate regime reveal its capacity to mask and reinforce inequalities in contributions to climate change, exposure to adverse affects, and participation (as well as capacity to participate) in international environmental politics. On the other hand, emerging climate governance processes have also created new venues to challenge asymmetric linkages and new opportunities to promote equitable development. The goal of this session is to investigate the specific linkages and organizational forms through which global climate governance is being constituted and challenged. Speakers will highlight the various arenas - from local cities to transnational negotiations—in which governments, international organizations, NGOs, and social movements are navigating both cooperation and conflict in the expansion of climate change governance. In so doing, speakers will examine the actual conditions, mechanisms and channels through which various actors are shaping the global climate regime as well as what consequences their actions have for how authority, resources, ideas and bodies are organized and distributed in an increasingly global society.

The source of differences and disparities between men and women has long been contested terrain within sociology. Many gender scholars have argued against using biological sex differences as an explanation for patterns of inequality, arguing that these differences are products of society. Yet, social constructionist arguments about gender inequality have been critiqued for leaving the body and biology out of their theory and research. The increasing trend toward including "bio-markers" in health research has re-sparked long-standing debates about the role of nature and nurture in accounting for gender differences and gender disparities. This panel brings together scholars who hold a variety of positions on this biological turn in an effort to consider both the benefits and risks of bringing biology back into the sociology of gender.

It is exactly 20 years since Boris Yeltsin dramatically climbed onto the tank that prefigured the collapse of the Soviet Union by the end of 1991. How did this mighty empire collapse with hardly a whimper? What has happened to post-Soviet Russia over the last 20 years? Las Vegas is famous, and infamous, for repeatedly reinventing itself by appropriating styles and practices from other places. The continual changes in tourism, architecture, and population, however, do not occur by the fiat of an invisible (neon) hand. Instead, the people who live, work, and play in Las Vegas constitute a dynamic and paradoxical culture that is entrepreneurial and nostalgic, liberal and conservative, honest and illusory. Panelists - comprised of local academics and "culture makers" - will address the often contradictory characteristics of everyday life in Las Vegas and explain why the city remains "an exaggerated example from which to derive lessons for the typical" (Venturi, Brown, and Izenour, Learning from Las Vegas, 1977). Discussions will focus on the ways that Las Vegas, glittered warts and all, is emblematic of American cultural ideals, beliefs, and values. Crowd participation is welcomed and encouraged.

Richard K. Scotch, University of Texas at Dallas Disability is an emerging field of interest to sociologists. The newly established Disability and Society section was made possible by the support of nearly one hundred graduate students from across the discipline. Yet there are few resources available to sociologists interested in researching disability, publishing on disability, and teaching about disability. This workshop will offer strategies for building or enhancing a career in the sociology of disability. Topics will include: finding funding sources on disability; making journals choices; including disability into a curriculum; developing syllabi and designing a sociology of disability course; and service opportunities at the local, regional, and national levels.

Three years into the Obama Administration and amidst new constellations of political power, the hot-button "culture wars" issues of gender and sexuality that characterized the Bush years have been assumed by some commentators to have largely subsided. With the rise of an economically driven Tea Party movement and the decline of the Religious Right as a political presence, it is possible to make the argument that some of the most heated dimensions of sexual politics in the last decade—including gay marriage, abortion, sexual diversity in the military, and the global spread of HIV/AIDs—are receding in importance as politically divisive issues. At the same time, the continued salience of abortion politics in debates around health care reform and the rise of right-wing "birther" and anti-immigration movements that pivot on intersections of race and reproduction have returned sexuality to the forefront of national politics through some surprising new channels. This panel invites distinguished sociologists, historians, and political theorists to assess the state of contemporary sexual politics as well as the challenges for progressive social movements going forward. In what ways have certain key features of U.S. sexual politics shifted in the age of Obama? Which facets of the contemporary political terrain are most deeply entrenched? In the face of complicated and contradictory trends, panelists will consider the changing landscape of sexual politics through an analysis of foreign and domestic policy and the broader configurations of power that shape erotic life, including political economy, war and peace, and intersecting forms of inequality.

Discussant: Charles Kurzman, University of North Carolina A recurrent subtext underlying social conflict in the Middle East is contested conceptions of the nation. The ideology of the nation only developed in the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, yet national identities have become so powerfully entrenched that they are often taken for granted, both by Middle Easterners and by social-scientific observers. This panel explores the taken-for-grantedness of nationality through the study of headline-grabbing conflicts that often appear, on the surface, to revolve around something else. In each of these instances, political movements attempt to construct a unified sense of nationality, and suppress dissident images of the nation, through mobilization against an enemy. Turkish-Armenian conflicts, for example, use the bloodshed of 1915 to justify homogenizing visions of the nation-states that emerged from the Ottoman and Russian/Soviet empires in the 20th century. Neoliberals in the region sublimate class conflict through religious imagery of the nation. The Iranian reform movement and its authoritarian opponents invoke distinct conceptions of the nature of the Iranian nation, under the guise of disputes over religion and politics. Palestinian-Israeli conflicts are transparently "national," not just disputes between Israelis and Palestinians but also among Israelis and Palestinians, with sometimes violent clashes on each side over the nature and territorial birthright of the nation. This panel presents research by leading scholars exploring the ways in which the "nation" has become the site of contestation in each of these cases.

Over the past few decades there has been considerable discord regarding the form and functions of the American family, and the roles constituent members should play. Demographic change (the increasing prevalence of cohabitation, marital delay, high levels of female labor force participation) and economic challenges (wage stagnation; unemployment) have resulted in substantial proportions of Americans of all ages who must grapple with different family realities than they were raised with. While the American media often portrays the situations resulting from these changes in an amusing light (alpha wives and cougars; men fleeing commitment or grappling clumsily with being fathers), they generally fail to adequately address the tensions inherent in men's and women's beliefs of what the family is supposed to be. This panel examines flash-points in heterosexual intimate relationships and the factors challenging their formation, stability, and quality. Among the issues panelists will address are: How much trust do women have in the men in their lives and the institution of the family? What do men think about the static expectation often imposed on them to be providers, and do they view that as a desirable or attainable goal? Given that the majority of women now work outside the home for pay, what are men's (and women's) expectations regarding domestic labor in the home, or childcare? In other words, what makes the family difficult to sustain?

The year 1886 marked a pivotal moment in the history of U.S. class conflict. In that year, a massive strike wave known as The Great Upsurge not only challenged emerging structures of industry and management, but also raised critical issues regarding the form and mission of working class organization, as well as working class political representation. As the ASA gathers in Chicago, an epicenter of the 1886 upsurge, 125 years later, this thematic session not only commemorates the historical events of that year, but also uses them as a starting point to address crucial issues relating to enduring questions of "American exceptionalism," political culture and protest, class formation, social movement emergence/organization, and more.

We explore the inverse relationship between men's conflict/violence and

women's empowerment, especially economic empowerment. This increasingly consequential relationship hasn't yet become a major focus of public policy debates. Using the tug-of-war metaphor, panelists examine the groups and trends pushing toward violent patriarchy vs. the more peaceful, gender-egalitarian direction. Though historically (for ~7,000 years), the violent side has dominated, today conflict-prone states/groups are less developed and generally grow at lower rates than the less bellicose. The outcome of this tug-of-war remains unknown. Although armed conflicts have declined since 1992, asymmetric violence still has global repercussions. Moreover, the causal direction of the men's violence/women's empowerment interrelationship is unclear and the association of violence with men alone remains controversial. Mixing panelists who speak to both ends - and macro vs. micro aspects - of the male conflict/violence and female empowerment continuum, from different disciplinary and policy perspectives, should create an illuminating session - with, perhaps, some sparks.

089. Special Session. Assessing Social Change Over Time: The General Social Survey, 1971-2011

Davis submitted a research proposal arguing that 20 survey questions of general social science interest should be asked of a random sample of adult Americans, and that these data should be disseminated widely and freely for use by researchers and instructors. From these modest beginnings, the General Social Survey (GSS) project developed; to date, it has conducted 27 sample surveys to measure hundreds of variables repeatedly for over 53,000 U.S. adults, and thousands more at least once. Through its participation in and leadership of the International Social Survey Program (ISSP), the GSS has developed important data resources for international comparative survey research. The project has documented more than 16,000 social science publications that draw on GSS data, and hundreds of thousands of undergraduate students have made use of it in social science courses. It is the second most widely-used data source in social science, trailing only the Current Population Survey. In 2011, the GSS will turn 40 and enter its fifth decade. Its data now provide information on aggregate social trends over two generations, spanning a period including many remarkable societal changes. The session will call attention to some prominent substantive contributions to social science that have emerged out of the GSS project.

Kari Marie Norgaard, Whitman College Global warming poses major threats to both social and natural systems, but societal response has been minimal--especially in the USA—where the threat is met with widespread denial. Two forms of denial have emerged: an organized countermovement among corporate and conservative social actors and more general public apathy or failure to mobilize effectively by individual citizens and civil society. Organized climate change denial emerged in the late 1980s, spear-headed by the fossil fuels industry and corporate interests such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce before becoming entrenched in the U.S. conservative movement. In the 1990s conservative think tanks and industry groups launched an anti-environmental countermovement, and a crucial strategy was undermining the scientific evidence for problems like global warming and thus the need for ameliorative action. Because of the regulatory implications posed by anthropogenic climate change, global warming became the leading target in these efforts to "manufacture uncertainty," and today the entire field of climate science is under attack. Organized denial is flourishing, and having an obvious impact in the political domain. Yet, despite recent declines, a majority of the American public accepts the reality of global warming and expresses some degree of concern about it. Nonetheless, for most people climate change is not viewed as a pressing social or political priority. This "implicatory denial" helps account for the limited success experienced by those seeking to mobilize grass-roots action in support of climate change policy-making. The leaders of the seminar will provide an overview of these two distinct reactions to climate change: organized denial and the more generalized failure to citizens to mobilize or even engage with the problem. We will first examine organized denial, including its ideological

roots, preferred tactics, ever-evolving set of critical actors (think tanks and corporate associations; front groups and astro-turf campaigns; and conservative politicians, media, and bloggers) and its impacts on policy-making and political culture. We will then describe implicatory denial or "climate apathy" as a more pervasive and everyday problem whereby people acknowledge having information about climate change but not thinking about, or acting on, it in their everyday lives. The threat of climate change is acknowledged in the abstract, but disconnected from and invisible within political, social, and private life. The two forms of denial, which are mutually reinforcing, contribute to the lack of societal response to the threat of climate change. A set of relevant readings by the seminar leaders and other social scientists investigating climate change denial will be made available prior to the seminar.

Kelty, Washington College The long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have required the largest deployment of both active duty and reserve military personnel by the United States and its allies since World War II. The durations of the wars and the multiple deployments of personnel they have required, the relatively low lethality of the weapons used by the insurgencies in these countries, coupled with major advances in protective equipment and in battlefield medicine, have resulted in few fatalities relative to past wars, but large numbers of combat veterans, significant percentage of whom bear physical and psychological scars of their experience. This panel will present research by leading scholars on the decompression and post-service integration of personnel who have served in the regular and reserve armed forces of the United States and the United Kingdom in either Iraq or Afghanistan. It will address both negative consequences of such deployments such as post-traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and positive consequences such as resilience and post-traumatic growth. The discussion will focus on the experience of homecoming, differences between regular and reserve forces, changes over time, the effectiveness of reintegration programs, and the use of medical and non-medical services.

It is widely recognized that periods of economic crisis are also periods of transformation in the social and political structures which organize the economy. The Great Depression gave rise to the regulated economy of the "Golden Age" of postwar capitalism, characterized by an active state, corporations that offered significant social protection to workers, and a sustained period of relative peace between capital and labor that supported widely shared prosperity. The economic crisis of the 1970s brought a swing in the other direction as markets were unshackled from regulatory constraints, the state retreated from its active role in guiding the economy, and corporations lost the organizational coherence that had characterized firms in preceding decades, chasing after the elixir of quarterly profit reports rather than making longer-term investments in communities and workers. What kind of economic future does the current crisis portend? Rather than offering yet another post-mortem on the financial crisis of 2007-2008, this thematic session takes a step back to consider the various possibilities for social, economic, and political transformation presented by the financial crisis and whether these possibilities are likely to be realized. Thus, this session would invite presenters to consider the crisis as a possible turning point in financial capitalism, with the goal of discerning what kinds of new organizational forms, new popular movements, new regulatory strategies, and new modes of economic discourse we might see emerging in the future (or the obstacles to their emergence).

Would you like to learn how to combine both qualitative and Census data in your research? This workshop provides step-by-step instructions on how social scientists can link qualitative data and newly released 2010 Census data in mixed-methods research projects. We show these linkages of qualitative and quantitative data using our current 2010 Census evaluation study. Laurie Schwede manages a comparative ethnographic program to explore census coverage in different race and ethnic groups. Rae Blumberg conducted one of the qualitative field observation studies in the larger project. First, Laurie Schwede describes the overall study, the methodology and the use of Census data. She presents slides with step-by-step "screen-shot" instructions on how to use the newly restructured, automated American FactFinder system at www.census.gov to generate custom tables with new 2010 Census data on race/ethnicity and household and family structure. She focuses on the site where Rae Blumberg conducted her fieldwork. Second, Rae Blumberg briefly describes some of her preliminary qualitative fieldwork findings, as well as very low-cost rapid appraisal methods she developed in her research in international development; these combine well with Census data. Workshop participants can use the PowerPoint handouts as their guide to creating their own customized data tables, using the newly emerging 2010 Census data in the American FactFinder system. Voila - original research on a shoestring!
