Mary Cairncross Park upgrade not popular with all
Sunshine Coast Regional Coun-cil proposal for an upgrade to the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve has not proved popular with all
The group would like to see a reduction in the number of visitors to the park - not an increase They believe that the increased people numbers would have a negative impact on the reserversquos unique wildlife such as the the endangered red-legged pademelon
Local Sunshine Coast Councillor Ms Jenny McKay said ldquo Coun-cilrsquos planned upgrades include a cafe learning centre gift shop meeting room and o ces which are required to accommodate the over 90 volunteers who provide care for the park
There will also be an outdoor learning space and viewing platform she continued
Mary Cairncross Park was donat-ed to the Landsborough Shire Council in 1941 for use by the community by Misses E G M M and M P Thynne who were descendents of the Burgess family
Construction of the upgrade is expected to start early in 2013

The goodness of artistic pieces is always in the eye of the beholder It does not really matter whether you like it or not but you can only admire the talent of the person who did the work
Something that caught my atten-tion last week was a series of glass work from local artisan Glenys Fen-timan called ldquoThe Glass Girls Seriesrdquo
The twins - one is a Stained Glass Mosaic the other is Glass-on-Glass Glenys calls them Sandy and Shel-ley
The GOG technique is a jealously guarded one that has been handed down through hundreds of gener-ations of a mystical Nepalese tribe and only available to outsiders who complete a rigorous training regime lasting at least fteen years
For those who do not have fteen years to do the rigorous training
you can use Mac Glue

In a judgement announced on De-cember 12th 2012 a Federal Court Judge Judge Rares has thrown out of court in Sydney a sexual harass-ment case brought against the sit-ting Federal member for Fisher Mr Peter Slipper by his media advisor Mr James Ashby
The Judge found that Mr James Ashby and fellow media adviser Karen Doane plotted to bring down Sunshine Coast MP Peter Slipper
The Judge also said the sexual harassment case was an abuse of the judicial process He continued that the court action was for the predominant purpose of causing political damage to Mr Slipper
As a result the case against Mr Slipper was dismissed with costs against Mr Ashby
Mr Ashby had claimed that he believes that he was originally hired because he was gay He said that he was the target of unwelcome sexual advances unwelcome sexual comments and unwelcome sugges-tions of a sexual nature from Mr Slipper
Mr Slipper maintained the allega-tions were false and that the lawsuit was a character assault designed to hurt my political career hurt
me nancially destabilise the gov-ernment and destroy my marriage
Mr Ashby told reporters outside the court it had been a harrowing time for him and his supporters He continued Since that date (April 20th 2012) no evidence at all has been heard on my substan-tive complaint against the former Speaker that he sexually harassed me There has been a deter-mined campaign to try and prevent the substantive allegations being heard and judged in open court and to put me to the maximum cost in pursuing justice
The Judge also found that he was satis ed that Mr Ashby and Ms Doane were in a combination with Mr Mal Brough to cause Mr Slipper as much political and public dam-age as they could in ict on him It appeared that Mr Ashby and Ms Doane saw Mr Brough as their means of obtaining favour from the LNP in seeking new employment
In his conclusion the Judge con-cluded Having read all of the text messages on Mr Ashbys mobile phone as Mr Ashbys senior counsel invited me to do as well as the other evidence I have reached the rm conclusion that Mr Ashbys predominant purpose for bringing these proceedings was to pursue a political attack against Mr Slipper and not to vindicate any legal claim he may have for which the right to bring proceedings exists
Mr Ashby began planning that
attack at least by the beginning of February 2012rdquo
Mr Ashby said his legal team would study the judgment in detail and at this stage we intend to appeal this regrettable decision
Mr Slipper represented himself when the matter was heard in October
Following the handing down of the decision Mr Slipper said ldquoI feel vindicated by todayrsquos judgement The past eight months have been extremely traumatic for my wife family and me
I thank my wife family sta and friends for their support during this extraordinarily di cult timerdquo
In March 2012 Mr Mal Brough was pre-selected by the LNP to stand for the Federal seat of Fisher at the next Federal Election
In a statement released by Mr Mal Brough on December 12th he said ldquoTodayrsquos judgement in the Federal Court changes nothing in relation to Mr Slipperrsquos vile text messages
I am sure the people of Fisher are looking forward to their opportuni-ty to have their say on Mr Slipperrsquos behaviour
I reiterate that I have at all times acted appropriately in relation to this matter and given the decision is subject to appeal I do not intend to make further commentrdquo
Mr Ashby has previously reached a $50000 settlement with the Com-monwealth which related to the same circumstances
He sued the Federal Government for failing to provide a safe working environment The resultant court proceedings cost the Federal Gov-ernment over $700000 to settle

One of the most common weed pests we come across around our area is the Wild Tobacco Bush
In our area it is commonly found along the roadside verges
This small tree is highly invasive forming dense stands in forest ar-eas competing with other trees and shrubs It is found primarily along creeks and rivers although it can spread right through most forest types It can tolerate both shaded areas and full sun areas
Seed is spread by water birds hu-mans and dumped garden waste Seed germinates after re
Again this bush is an introduced pest having been introduced from Argentina in South America
Wild tobacco is a large spreading shrub or small tree with branched stems It has a life span of up to 30 years It grows to 3ndash4 m and all parts of the bush are covered with
pale lsquofeltyrsquo hairs
Leaves are lance-shaped up to 30 cm long and 10 cm wide yellow-ish-green above paler beneath and densely covered with lsquofeltyrsquo hairs They are tapered at both ends with short thick stalks and two stipules at the leaf base
Flowers and fruit grow on this bush throughout the year especially in spring and autumn Open purple owers are in large at toppedclusters fruit are clustered like grapes green at rst turning dark yellow when ripe
It is poisonous especially the ber-ries for animals stock and humans The ne hairs found on the leaves can also be very dangerous to humans when those ne hairs are blown into the atmosphere by wind
and breathed in
The most e cient way of removing this plant is by hand Seedlings to 15m can be pulled out (easiestwhen soil is moist) Larger plants can be dug out or can be sawn o near ground level and the stumppainted with an undiluted glypho-sate-based product to prevent re-growth
Once an area is cleared it is import-ant to check from time to time for re-growth

The genre-traversing Hermitude (aka Luke Dubs and Elgusto) from the Blue Mountains will be per-forming again at Woodford this year The duo formed more than a decade ago with a shared love of beats and turntables with their most recent album HyperParadise winning the pair awards and new fans nationwide

Festival Director Bill Hauritz says that the brilliant expressions of the artists at Woodford Folk Festival remind us of our humanity
ldquoOur wonderful artists are the cata-lyst Their need to communicate to us their beauty and ideas is welded to their soulsrdquo he said
This couldnrsquot be truer than with Australian favourite Angus Stone who will also be joining the slew of world-class artists at Woodford along with his sister Julia But not
as yoursquod expect the pair are set to charm crowds with their solo work in separate shows rather than as the usual duo
Other favourite Aussie talent Kate Miller Heidke will also be bringing joy to festivillians this year with her mesmerising vocal gymnastics Joining her is John Butler Trio one of the Woodford Folk Festivals re-peat favourite live out ts
Joining the newcomers is Sticky Fingers who although performed at Woodford last year have only just begun to grab the rest of Aus-traliarsquos attention Their collection of psychotic surfdub love songs are turning heads particularly track Caress Your Soul
Tim Hart who is best known as the man behind the drum kit in Boy and Bear is set to bring his solo work to Woodfordia with mellow soulful and melodic folk music

Sunshine Coast Council Commu-nity Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said unfortunately this was a peak time of year for dogs to stray
I encourage all residents to work together as a united communi-ty by practicing or encouraging responsible dog ownership and help to keep our local neighbour-hoods parks and beaches safe
Therersquos no harm in politely ad-vising your friend or neighbour at the local on-leash park to pop their pooch safely back on the leash
While it might seem like a minor misdemeanour unfortunately dogs o leash or stray dogs roam-ing the streets are more likely to be a nuisance to others be in-volved in a dog attack or be hit by a car
Remember it is always easier for council to return a dog to the rightful home quickly if it is cor-rectly microchipped It is good to check that your details are correct
Council canrsquot be everywhere at once ndash if you see a stray dog or a dog acting aggressively please report it to council immediately on 5475 7272 or email mailsun-shinecoastqldgovau

Noosa to vote on De-amalgamation
The Minister for Local Government has granted approval to hold a de-amalgamation vote by the peo-ple of Noosa to leave the Sunshine Coast regional Council
The result will not only a ect the people of Noosa ndash but all residents of the Sunshine Coast
Sun shine Coast Mayor Cr Mark Jamieson said ldquoI think itrsquos import-ant for the people who get to vote ndash and those who donrsquot ndash to under-stand exactly what the costs are and how they will be a ected
The deceision by the State Govern-ment in 2008 to amalgamated the three Sunshine Coast councils into the one counbcil was not a popular decision
The cost of amalgamation has now been met but to now de-amalgam-ate is to add afurther burden on all ratepayers Now it is most likely that one strong council would be turned into two weaker councils
Mr Jamieson said ldquoCouncilrsquos posi-tion has been clear on de-amalga-mation ndash it would prefer it to stay as one united council for one united regionrdquo
Only residents in the former council area will vote with a referendum to be held in the rst quarter of 2013 Voting will be compulsory
Irrespective of the result of the vote all Sunshine Coast Residents will pay for any changes to boundaries

Identifi cation of Exterior Paint Surface Conditions and Rec-ommended TreatmentsIt is assumed that a preliminary check will already have been made to determine fi rst that the painted exterior surfaces are in-deed wood--and not stucco met-al or other wood substitutes--and second that the wood has not decayed so that repainting would be superfl uousFor example if any area of bare wood such as window sills has been exposed for a long period of time to standing water wood rot is a strong possibility Repair or replacement of deteriorated wood should take place before repaint-ing After these two basic issues have been resolved the surface condition identifi cation process may commence
Older buildings will undoubtedly exhibit a variety of exterior paint surface conditions For exam-ple paint on the wooden siding and doors may be adhering fi rm-ly paint on the eaves peeling and paint on the porch balusters
and window sills cracking and alligatoringThe accurate identifi cation of each paint problem is therefore the fi rst step in planning an ap-propriate overall solutionPaint surface conditions can be grouped according to their rela-tive severity CLASS I condi-tions include minor blemishes or dirt collection and generally require no paint removalCLASS II conditions include failure of the top layer or layers of paint and generally require limited paint removal andCLASS III conditions include substantial or multiple-layer failure and generally require total paint removal It is precisely be-cause conditions will vary at dif-ferent points on the building that a careful inspection is criticalEach item of painted exterior woodwork (ie siding doors windows eaves shutters and decorative elements) should be examined early in the planning phase and surface conditions noted

The Maleny Rotary Club and the Blackall Range Woodworkers have combined to put new doors on the new community centre
As a result of 12 months planning discussions sketches and design options the Maleny Community Centre doors have been built and delivered The builder Ross Ma-neely will install them after the bulk of the internal tout is complete sometime in February 2013
In a joint collaboration a donation of $3000 from Maleny Rotary for the cost of the beautiful timbers (red cedar panels New Guinea rosewood frames) gave the Black-all Range Woodcrafters Guild (the Woodies) a start point for the saw-ing sanding carving gluing and nishing touches to create a mod-ern masterpiece that will be around hopefully for generations to come
Hundreds of hours of creative ener-gy have gone into hand crafting the central focus point for the entrance to the renovated building
It is both exciting and really neat to see one community group (Rotary) helping another community group (Woodies) create something special for all the community to admire Both clubs hope that you get to enjoy the doors every time you use the centre and re ect on how lucky we are in Maleny to have just active volunteer groups and community
service clubs that help both people and communal assets for you the residents
A sequence of photos follows showing the sawing carving glu-ing micro-adjustment and spraying of the doors

This couldnrsquot be truer than with Australian favourite Angus Stone who will also be joining the slew of world-class artists at Woodford along with his sister Julia But not

The photo belowshows the scope and size of the nished product pri-or to transit from the Woodies Shed to the Community Centre

The photo belowshows the scope and size of the nished product pri-or to transit from the Woodies Shed to the Community Centre
A wide array of up-and-coming Australian artists are set to enchant audiences at the Woodford Folk Festival this year along with some more familiar faces
Debuting this year is newcom-er Emma Louise who has had a whirlwind 12 months Shersquos had sold-out shows and international acclaim owed to her intoxicating voice and honest delivery and she will be welcomed to the Woodford Folk Festival with open arms
When he sings he wears his heart on his sleeve but for Sydney born Tim Hart itrsquos the only way to sing
The Woodford Folk Festival is held from the 27th of December to the 1st of January Visit woodfordfolk-festivalcom for more information

Donrsquot forget Fido this Christmas
Summer is o cially here ndash the kids are home for the holidays and relatives are coming and going but where is Fido

The photo belowshows the scope and size of the nished product pri-or to transit from the Woodies Shed to the Community Centre
