The Skies Light Up with the North Halifax Stars The talent and community spirit in Illingworth, Mixenden and Ovenden shone through at the North Halifax Neighbourhood Awards 2013 on Friday night. St Catherine’s Assistant Head Andrew Smith opened the ceremony and local Councillors were among those invited to present the awards to the winners. Dazzling young performers from St Catherine’s Catholic High School and Trinity Academy Community Choir provided the musical entertainment in between the awards.

Safer Online PCSO Brian Russell and Heather Stout from Ovenden and Mixenden Initiative joined in St Joseph's Primary school's day at North Bridge leisure centre, where they were talking to the kids on E-Safety. This was a day to speak with the students in relation to all things internet based and I did a talk on cyber bullying, how to report it and how we investigate allegations. The students asked lots of questions and everybody enjoyed the day.
Get Involved / Have Your Say Calderdale Big Clean 2013 – 23-26 April 2013 We all want Calderdale to be a cleaner place to live and visit, which is why Calderdale Council has organised a Big Clean, targeting council land that runs along some of the main routes coming into the borough. The clean up in North and East Halifax will take place on Wednesday 24 April in Illingworth and Mixenden, Northowram and Shelf, Ovenden and Warley. The Environmental Health team is also encouraging private land owners to clean up their own sites. Volunteers Needed Now! The Halifax Boys’ Brigade is looking for fresh new Volunteers to help keep the Brigade going. At Boys’ Brigade children and young people get involved in a huge range of exciting activities and adventures, from first aid, abseiling, circus skills, and much more. There’s also opportunities to get involved in international work, community action projects, camping and trying out new sports. As a volunteer you can take an active part in some of these fun and exciting activities. Or you can simply help organise activities with the children and young people. As a volunteer you’ll also gain from the experience by making new friends and learning new skills that you can use at work or put on a CV. The Boys’ Brigade will also provide you with training opportunities to build on your existing skills as well as support guidance in your role. New! Citizens Advice Sessions at Pennine Housing Illingworth Calderdale Citizens Advice Bureau now offers a brand new service from the Pennine Housing office on Turner Avenue South in Illingworth. The session offers free and confidential advice to help people resolve their legal, money and other problems. Sessions will run weekly on Thursdays, 10am – 1pm from the housing office except on staff or public holidays. You may have to wait at busy times, please be aware that CAB advisers may refer you to another session or to CAB main office if your case needs further work beyond the advice we can give on the day. RSPCA Week – April 29th – 5th May 2013 RSPCA Week is to raise income and awareness of the work the RSPCA does, it’s been running every year since 1995. Over £4,000 was raised for your local Branch last year by their loyal supporters. The next RSPCA Week is Monday April 29th – Sunday 5th May 2012. All animals deserve a life free from hunger and thirst and to be protected from cruelty and pain. Hound Hike Sponsored Dog Walk Second event is a Sponsored Dog Walk at Scammondon Reservoir, Huddersfield. We are promoting this event throughout Halifax and Huddersfield: Join the RSPCA on a Hound Hike Sponsored Dog Walk at Scammonden Reservoir on Sunday 12 May at 10am. Registration for the walk is free, but you are asked that you raise some sponsorship to help local animals in need. Illingworth Junior Rugby League Club is looking for new players, boys and girls, for their teams (ages 6 to 11 years). Training is every Wednesday evening, 6pm and Saturday mornings, 9.30am. All training is FREE. Children from the local areas are especially invited to come and sample playing rugby in a friendly, family orientated club. No experience necessary. Dates: 20 April, 27 April and 4 May 2013 Each session runs from 10am – 12 noon and families can take part in fun craft and games activities, as well as supported visits with trained staff to different areas of the museum each week. These clubs are possible thanks to funding from Esmée Fairbairn. Northowram’s Got Talent! Family fun at Northowram Community Centre on Saturday 4 May from 6pm. Do you have a skill or talent you want the world to see? Then you can’t afford to miss this massive opportunity. Places are limited so apply now to secure your spot! The fun will then continue at the Centre with a family party, disco and magic show with a bar and food. Family entrance to party £5 Talent competition entrance £2 Children and adults all welcome to show off your skills with prizes for each age group. Every Thursday is ‘Pie Thursday’ at Five Vintage Bistro, Holmfield Mills. For the past year Jennine and her team have delivering ready-made meals to the elderly who have come out of hospital and need a helping hand to flourish back to full health through eating fresh, nutritious food. The service is now available to the whole of North Halifax so that everyone can feel the benefits of delicious, nourishing meals delivered to their door. The ‘Pie Thursday’ service is perfect for the elderly and infirm and also for busy families who are struggling for time. Calderdale College Have A Go Open Evenings Calderdale College - 23 April, 4.30pm to 7pm at Francis Street Campus. Students will be able to try out taster activities for a number of vocational courses. There will also be information on new courses, higher education and professional courses, apprenticeships, funding advice and information for parents. North Halifax Skills Centre - 1 May, 4.30pm to 7pm at Club Lane, Ovenden. Students will be able to try out taster activities for a number of vocational courses, as well as finding out about studying at the College and new courses starting in September 2013. Together Housing Apprenticeships for Tenants Work with us! Together Housing is looking for tenants or children of tenants between 16 and 18 years old who want to work with us doing Business Administration work. As well as learning all types of office duties, you will complete a Level 2 NVQ in Business Administration. If you are successful at interview, you will then complete an eight-week pre-apprenticeship programme, consisting of three days a week in college learning various office responsibilities and two days in the office on work experience. Travel and lunch expenses will be paid. If you pass the pre-apprenticeship programme you will get the opportunity to start a two/three-year work placement to gain more qualifications. Successful candidates will receive £100/week in year one, increased to minimum wage in year two.
