PREVIEW OF A MAVEN’S WORLD LIFESTYLE

BRAND FASHION WEEK EVENT

In The Devil Wears Prada, one of my favorite scenes is when Miranda Priestly teaches her fashion-challenged assistant a valuable lesson about the industry. When Andy mentions that her sweater is “blue,” Priestly says, “But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean. And you’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. …And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers.” Whether we like it or not, fashion weeks in New York, London, Paris and Milan dictate what the world will wear next spring and summer. New York wrapped up its fashion week last Thursday and Boston Fashion Week debuts this Friday. Created by Jay Calderin in 1995, the non-profit event features runway shows by local designers as well as a host of fashion related activities throughout the city.

For the past three years, Boston native Anna Foster, whose company A Maven’s Lifestyle Brand, has taken part in the event, “This is one of our signature events, we do it every year. This will be our third year with A Maven’s World brand opening Boston Fashion Week,” Foster said. After graduating from Suffolk Law School, Foster practiced law for a few years but knew her true calling was to be an entrepreneur in the fashion industry. The legal education helps with the business side of the industry, “Obviously having a doctorate in law really [helps with] contracts and agreements. Also with regard to consulting clients, it allows me to speak to them from the standpoint to avoid pitfalls that may occur in their own business,” Foster said.

Fashion has not been an easy industry for people of color to break into. victorious. Today, diversity on the runway and at top fashion houses in the United States is the biggest challenge faced by the industry, a fact Foster is well aware of, “The only thing that I can do is start with us, with our own brand in hopes of showcasing diverse models and designers,” Foster said.

At this year’s event, Foster chose Eva Marcille (pictured at left) as the celebrity guest. Marcille’s career blossomed after winning the third cycle of America’s Next Top Model, a show created by supermodel Tyra Banks. In addition to modeling, Marcille has expanded her career to include acting, hosting television shows and community activism, “She has a great presence. She is one of the top models that has furthered her career and stayed steadfastly in the fashion industry. She is definitely on the rise so when we were thinking of fashion week, we wanted one of the top models and she definitely represents her brand well and we thought she would be a good fit,” Foster said. Eleven local designers and boutiques will be represented. Pink Shoe Lounge, Tasha Michelle Closet and Ortega Jewelry are just a few, “This is another opportunity and a platform that was created to allow [designers and boutiques] to showcase their brand during fashion week,” said Foster.

Before making the decision to donate part of the proceeds from the show to a charitable organization, Foster looked at fifteen non-profits that she was familiar with. After speaking with Tailored for Success founder Elizabeth Hart at a fundraiser, Foster discovered that Hart was a strong supporter of her company, “Liz was familiar with our brand, she had been following us for years and I had just never met her. She

spoke very highly of A Maven’s World,” Foster said. “One of the things that made me choose Tailored for Success is that [the organization] is grassroots. I feel that they are a little bit more connected and in touch with communities in Massachusetts with regards to who they serve.” Tailored for Success is a non-profit dedicated to assisting economically disadvantaged women, men and youth with resources to build their self-esteem and self-confidence. The organization focuses attention on the needs of clients who come from domestic violence or homeless shelters, job training or reentry programs.

Foster is a “maven” in every sense of the word. She believes that visibility inside and outside of the community is essential when it comes to promoting and expanding her brand, “We’re really diligent about actually being included in the fashion industry in New England overall. But it’s not like [we are being invited], we show up and we make our presence known. I’ve done that for years,” said Foster.

They soon learn that the quiet man, Henry Church (Eddie Murphy), has been hired by Marie’s recently deceased former lover to cook for them and help maintain the household. As Mr. Church’s time with the Brodys extends from months into years, he becomes a father figure for Charlie during her formative years, nurturing her love of literature and making a lasting impact on her life. When Phiona meets Robert Katende (David Oyelowo), a soccer player turned missionary who teaches local children chess, she is captivated. Chess requires a good deal of concentration, strategic thinking and risk taking, all skills which are applicable in everyday life and Katende hopes to empower youth with the game. Phiona is impressed by the intelligence and what the game requires and immediately shows potential. Recognizing Phiona’s natural aptitude for chess and the fighting spirit she’s inherited from her mother, Katende begins to mentor her, but Harriet is reluctant to provide any encouragement, not wanting to see her daughter disappointed. As Phiona begins to succeed in local chess competitions, Katende teaches her to read and write in order to pursue schooling. She quickly advances through the ranks in tournaments, but breaks away from her family to focus on her own life. Her mother eventually realizes that Phiona has a chance to excel and teams up with Katende to help her fulfill her extraordinary potential, escape a life of poverty and save her family.
