Friends and Colleagues,

Welcome to the Fourth Annual Roseman University of Health Sciences Research Symposium. We are pleased and grateful to continue the momentum that has been building since our first Symposium three years ago. This year, we received 118 abstracts to date across both campuses in South Jordan and Henderson as well as from a growing contingent from our colleagues outside of Roseman. We look forward to featuring the discoveries and scholarly work of our faculty members, staff, post-doctoral researchers, residents, and students from all of Roseman’s health disciplines. Many of the presenting authors both inside and outside of Roseman carry affiliations with other great universities and entities worldwide like Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Michigan, University of Southern California, NYU, UNC Chapel Hill, Touro University Nevada, University of Chicago, University of Dresden, Germany, Mekelle University in Ethiopia and pharmaceutical manufacturer Merck & Co. Our presenters are immensely talented and in demand, working across borders to create solutions, collaborating with other great minds, and bridging our communities.

This year’s abstracts cover a wide range of topics in various areas including bench-top science, clinical research, and educational research. These works independently and collectively represent prodigious planning, methodical execution, and deeply insightful findings. These works, with a wide breadth and depth of scientific subject matter, are steps towards solutions, solutions that advance not only our work and our national and international reputation, but advance the human race. Some interesting presentations to note include research on healthcare policy and which social determinants of health are most likely to acted upon in US policymaking, a retrospective cross-sectional study on an antiretroviral therapy among HIV patients in Northern Ethiopia, and research on how Roseman faculty use and understand the Six-Point Mastery Learning Model, Roseman’s innovative learning model which has challenged the way healthcare education is taught. As you can see, the work being conducted is truly transformational and holds great possibility in evolving our understanding of critically important issues.

We believe that this thinking, input and collaboration not only showcases current thinking, but sparks new ideas, new modes of thinking, and imagination. We are proud of the minds and hearts of those in this room today.

Thank you to all those responsible for making this important event happen, as well as to all those attending the symposium and supporting the work of colleagues, students and friends. We believe this symposium will continue to grow and serve as a platform for the best thinking and research and a home for sparking imagination, solutions, discovery and learning.

Sincerely,

Renee Coffman, President

Dr. Ching-Chang Ko Chair & Program Director Department of Orthodontics School of Dental Medicine University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill

Dr. Ching-Chang Ko is Professor of Orthodontics in the School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill (UNC). He received his dental training at the Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan, a MS in bioengineering from the Yang-Ming Medical University in Taiwan, and a PhD in bioengineering and biomaterials from the University of Michigan in US. He was the faculty in the Department of Oral Biology at the University of Minnesota from 1994 to 2006 and joined the faculty of UNC Orthodontics in 2006.

In the past three years, he has served as Program Director and Vice Chair of the Department of Orthodontics at UNC, and in 2014 was name Hale Professor, a distinguished professorship in the University. Since 2017 he has become the Chair of the department. He is an established biomaterial/biomechanical scientist and American Board of Orthodontics Certified. Dr. Ko has contributed more than 130 publications to the scientific literature, which include original research articles and chapters in books. Dr. Ko received B.F. Dewell Memorial Research Award from AAOF (American Association of Orthodontists Foundation) in 2007, and has lectured nationally and internationally. His research is funded by NIH, 3M, and Whitaker Foundation to develop new biomaterials for bone tissue engineering and to study orthodontic biomechanics. He has nurtured numerous PhD and Master students. He is a member of many associations and societies, including AADR, AAO, ORS, ASME, ASCer, and Biomaterials. He has served as the reviewer for various orthodontic and biomedical research journals.
