Spay / Neuter Special Campaigns With a grant from Animal Farm Foundation, Inc. (AFF), FOMCA
is still offering free spay/neuter for up to 50 “pit bull" dogs. So far
we are up to 24! AFF’s mission is to promote equal treatment and
opportunity for all dogs with the pit bull label. For more information
on AFF, visit animalfarmfoundation.org. To schedule your pit or pit mix for spay/
neuter, contact our office. First come, first served! A Pet Smart Charities grant has enabled FOMCA to spay/neuter a
whopping 212 free-roaming cats in Hot Springs! Cooperation with
Madison County Animals Services allowed us to exceed our target of
200 cats, and Hot Springs residents have reported seeing the differ-
ence in the cat population. Trapping and transporting so many cats in
a short time was possible because of ongoing efforts by Pattie Frost Jones, Michelle
Johnson, and Ann Zook, who volunteered not only time but also use of their own
vehicles. Ann also helped supervise cats after surgery. Moreover, Hot Springs
Campground has taken on management of a feral colony, and Brother Wolf Animal
Rescue helped get cats out of Hot Springs by taking 25 kittens deemed adoptable!

Fall 2013
Humane Education and Awareness "Friends" is starting its second year of Humane Education in the
Madison County Schools. Our volunteers and their canine am-
bassadors have visited each elementary school and had wonder-
ful experiences talking with the kids about kindness and respon-
sibility to our animal companions. High school classes heard
presentations from vets, trainers, and therapists whose treatment
involves working with horses. Thinking about volunteering in the new school year? Schedules
are flexible and rewards are huge! Volunteers go with and without canine ambassa-
dors. Some volunteers are former teachers who love animals, while others are folks
who love animals and want to impart this kinship to youngsters. FOMCA also continues to coordinate with Madison Schools
and Libraries to provide a process for owners and their dogs to
go through Therapy or Good Citizenship Programs. Successful
completion of one of these programs is necessary to visit
schools, libraries, and nursing homes. For more information about volunteering, contact the FOMCA
office and ask for Debbie Davis or Krystle Taylor.

Chain Free Update: Gabby Unchained Great Dane Gabby got off her chain and into a fenced yard with
the help of Dwayne Stines (Chain Free Asheville) and a group of
young volunteer fence builders from 4-H. FOMCA volunteer Michelle Johnson, coordinator of this project, has forwarded the
profuse appreciation and happy tears of Gabby’s owner, who promises Gabby will
never be on a chain again. FOMCA is out of Chain Free funding for this year but we
hope to build more fences in 2014!
