Center Supervisor's MessageJuly 1 is the first day of the fiscal year.

What does that mean? The Milwaukie Center is part of Clackamas County government that resets its budget cycle on July 1. The Milwaukie Center is a division of the North Clackamas Parks and Recreation District (NCPRD).

Most of the operating funds that keep this building humming come from the tax supported General Fund. This is the .54 per $1,000 assessed value that residents pay on their property tax. This type of funding is part of the reason the Milwaukie Center is truly a community center.

If you live and pay taxes in the Parks District then you support the Center. Transversely, having a facility like the Milwaukie Center brings real value back into the community that supports it. Supporting the Center through contributions or participation is truly a way to support the community you live in.

If you do participate, thanks for enriching your community. If you are thinking about participating, now is a great time to make a New (fiscal) Year's resolution and give your Community Center a try.

Sincerely,Marty Hanley, Center Supervisor

Center/Community Advisory BoardThe next meeting of the Center/Community Advisory Board (C/CAB) will be held jointly with the Friends of the Milwaukie Center Board on July 15 at 9:30 a.m. and is open to all interested people.

CULTIVATING JOY: THE FOUR ELEMENTS OF JOYTues, July 14; 10:30-11:30 a.m. Andrea Crisp, Holistic Health & Laughter Yoga instructor. Children are born with the innate ability to tap into joy. Unfortunately, as we age, joy is often lost to our own inhibitions, analytical thoughts and self-consciousness. This often limits our participation in joyful activities. Joy can be rediscovered through the concept of motion creating emotion; by allowing our minds and bodies the opportunity to play we can rewire our responses. Science supports this, the body and brain are a powerful duo. Are you curious? Come to this seminar to experience an enjoyable experience. Playing, singing, dancing and laughing are activities we all engage in with each other.

QI-GONGFri, July 17, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Join in and experience the benefits of Qi-Gong. Jeffery Thompson, Qi Gong master instructor will offer a great introductory class,” the Eight Treasures,” one of the oldest forms of Qi-Gong, and focuses on all of the organ systems. Its great for people of all ages, is fun to do and feels amazing. Jeffery is eager to share the benefits of Qigong, which is to create good health and happiness in other people’s lives through the practice of breathing techniques and the gentle, profound movement of the forms.

DIABETES SUPPORT and EDUCATION GROUPInformation, education and sharing for people with Type 2 diabetes, their families and friends. Everyone is welcome. No meeting during July & August, next meeting is Sept 2 at 1:30 p.m. Topic: Accessing the preventive health screening benefit through Medicare. CAREGIVERS SUPPORT GROUP Tuesday, July 14; 6-7:30 p.m. It’s important to take care of yourself, while you are caring for a loved one. The caregivers support group will provide participants an opportunity to share their ideas, and meet with others who are experiencing similar challenges. Participants will receive tips on self care and stress reduction; facilitated by staff from Elite Care and Helping Hands Home Care.

VIEWS SUPPORT GROUPVolunteers Involved for the Emotional Well-being of Seniors Ongoing, Tuesdays; 3-4 p.m. You don’t have to face life’s’ challenges alone. We have a few openings in our weekly senior support group led by trained volunteer peer counselors. The dance floor is open! The West's premier borderline fiesta music will be performed by Chihuahua Desert each month at the Milwaukie Center, starting Wednesday, July 8, at 11:45am. This duet performance will combine the pristine inspirational slide guitar and vocals of Bobby Johnson with Chihuahua Desert band leader Mark Cash on rhythm and vocals. Steve Rodgers may make a surprise appearance over the upcoming months on acoustic bass.

Chihuahua Desert plays their combination of Americana, Country, Blues, Folk Rock, Old Time and South-of-the-Border classics along with a small number of original tunes and those of interesting, unknown singer-songwriters -- all with that trademark Chi Desert sound that our End-of-Summer BBQ crowds have enjoyed for over 7 years.

Shows are scheduled for the following Wednesdays: July 8, Aug 19, Sept 24 for the End of Summer Barbecue, Oct 14, Nov 18 & December 9 from 11:45 am-12:45 p.m.

INNERgysticsINNERgystics is a unique and rewarding hour long workout journey that starts with a spinal and upper body warm up and deep breathing that prepares the body for the workout ahead. It then progresses through a series of upper and lower body exercises using light weights, body weight, or isometrics that are done rhythmically in combinations to optimize the function and oxygenation of muscle groups while providing an aerobic workout. The workout ends with a muscle stretching cool down and sense of relaxation with focused breathing techniques.

Where Were You?By Beverly Lopiparo Eberly

They say a storm like the one on Columbus Day, October 12, 1962 probably won’t occur again for 1000 years! Let’s hope not.

I was a 16-year-old at home with my family in Milwaukie. No one really knew what was happening; such a storm with unbelievable force. We stood around watching trees, bushes, gates, wires, etc. being pounded by the winds. It was the worst wind warning by forecasters ever.

We just all stood still -- my mother and three sisters. Dad was at work. There was no power, only dark, dark skies and debris flying everywhere.

46 people dead; 104 mile wind gusts and thousands and thousands of homes and property damaged.

We were among the lucky ones, when all was said and done, our fence was knocked down and there was tree debris all over. But we survived one of the worst storms in Oregon’s history.

Quilters and Crafters Wanted! The Friends are in great need of hand quilters to join our Thursday morning group. This dedicated group of ladies has a great time stitching and snitching (don’t tell them I said that!). They always seem to be having a lively conversation while they complete quilts for clients and earn money for the Center.

We continue to need volunteers for the Gift Shop, too. You will enjoy working alongside other crafters and seeing all of the great items that are brought in for sale.

Please call Colleen or Kay in the Friends office if you are interested in either of these volunteer opportunities.

Do you like to pick blueberries and help your community? Blueberries will ripen soon at Stringfield Family Park where the nutrition program has a blueberry patch maintained by North Clackamas Parks and Recreation. These fields yield gallons of blueberries each year that are used for Meals on Wheels. If you are interested in picking, please contact Kathi Schroeder at (503) 654-3030.
