The new school year is finally upon us! I would like to welcome back all of our returning PTAs and extend a special warm welcome to our newest Frisco PTA, Allen Elementary PTA. The Allen PTA was organized last May. I would like to thank the Allen PTA President Debi Meuret for all of her hard work and countless hours. Thank you also to Teresa Wilkinson, the Allen Principal for all of her support of PTA. This upcoming school year promises to be a busy one for Council and PTA with the opening of six new schools for the 2010-2011 school year. This means the possibility of six more Frisco PTAs and six PTAs to be organized this Spring. Our Frisco PTAs and Council spend numerous hours working to truly make a difference and positive impact on our children and parents. We strive to provide quality student and parent education programs as well as donating thousands of volunteer hours to our schools. Texas PTA is one of the largest and most influential child advocacy associations in the state of Texas, with a membership of over 600,000, and, therefore, one of the strongest voices for our children and schools. The mission of child advocacy and informed, involved parenting was the reason Texas PTA was formed 100 years ago, in 1909, and the dedication and commit-ment of our members is what brought us here today. Lastly, I would like to announce that the Frisco ISD Council of PTAs received the 2008-2009 Outstanding Council, Silver Level Award this summer. This award is the result of all the dedication, hard work, and commitment that was shown by last years board. Congratulations on job well done!

Once again it is time to get out those paints, cameras, pens, video cameras, pianos and dance shoes. Reflections is here again with the theme “Beauty Is99..” this promises to be a great year again! Please encourage your students to participate in this great program. Last year in Frisco we had 1,494 participants at our local level, 334 at our council level, 34 at the State level and one participant go on to National. We are very excited to see what our very talented students have in store for us this year. Each local school with have their own deadline in October with the entries that are forwarded to Council being judged on Friday, December 4th. LOT TRAINING INFORMATION LOT is an orientation course required by Texas PTA for all newly elected officers. According to your PTA’s bylaws, each officer must complete the course by October 15, 2009 after taking office or be ineligible to serve. The cost of LOT is $6. A LOT Guide will be provided for every attendee. A reservation is required and can be made by emailing: [email protected] with the session date and name of attendee. FISD Schools Coming Together on Environmental Topics

The Environmental Chairpersons from 17 FISD schools met on September 16th to discuss this year’s events, get valuable resources, learn more about the role of an Environmental Chairman and to exchange ideas. The trash-free event took place in the new Allen Elementary library and was hosted by Tanja Eltze, PTA Council Environmental Chair. The first consolidated program of the school year will be the Barktoberfest Reuse program, when schools collect used towels, blankets and animal related items to be donated to Frisco Humane Society. The items will be collected in the schools starting October 5th.

TEXAS PTA 2009 END OF SESSION LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES UPDATE

Texas PTA had a very successful legislative session thanks in LARGE part to PTA members around the state who visited your legislators both at home and in Austin, made phone calls to legislators, testified before committees and participated in Texas PTA Day at the Capitol. This session over 7,000 bills were reviewed, 1200 more than were filed last session, and over 605 bills were tracked. Of the 605 bills that were tracked, over 100 cards of support were submitted during House and Senate hearings on bills and PTA members represented PTA by giving oral testimony before legislative committees more than 20 times. Texas PTA staff and volunteers came to the capitol to distribute educational flyers and to speak to legislators about PTA priorities throughout the session. This session Texas PTA sought and secured the passage of: • BOOSTER SEAT BILL - SB 61, by Rep. Allen Vaught and Sen. Judith Zaffirini, the booster seat law. Texas becomes the 46th stateto enact legislation that updates Texas passenger safety statutes. • SALES TAX HOLIDAY EXPANSION - HB 1801, by Rep. Dwayne Bohac and Sen. Florence Shapiro, the sales tax holiday expansionto include basic school supplies. • CELL PHONE PROHIBITION FOR DRIVING TEENS - HB 339, by Rep. Larry Phillips and Sen. John Carona, the driver education bill that contains PTA’s cell phone ban for driving teens. • VOUCHERS - This session no voucher bill was voted favorably from any committee. Texas PTA hopes to work with staff of Senator Shapiro to identify solutions to the challenge of successfully meeting the needs of students who require institutional placement for autism. • HEALTHY LIFESTYLES - As a member of the Partnership for a Healthy Texas, Texas PTA worked to pass several key pieces of legislation: o SB 891, by Sen. Jane Nelson and Rep. Rob Eissler, creates a standard definition of physical education that applies to all public school physical education curriculum. o SB 892, by Sen. Jane Nelson and Rep. Mark Shelton, requires the inclusion in public school campus improvement plans of an evaluation of the campus coordinated health program. o SB 7, by Sen. Jane Nelson and Rep. Lois Kolkhorst, (amended onto SB 870) creates an Obesity Prevention Pilot Program. o SB 395, by Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. and Rep. Eddie Lucio III, creates an Early Childhood Health and Nutrition Interagency Council to develop an early childhood nutrition and physical activity plan with a recommended timeline for implementation. o SB 343, by Sen. Jane Nelson and Rep. Jim McReynolds, creates an advisory committee to study the areas of Texas that are underserved in the availability of healthy foods and the impact of the limited availability on nutrition, obesity, and chronic illnesses. o SB 283, by Sen. Jane Nelson and Rep. Mark Shelton, requires school districts to appoint at least five parents who are not also employees of the school district to local School Health Advisory Councils (SHACs) and requires SHACs to meet four times a year. The bill also requires districts to notify parents in writing if human sexuality instruction will be provided. o SB 870, by Sen. Lucio Jr. and Rep. Castro, creates the Interagency Obesity Council whose task is to create an evidence-based public health awareness plan. o SB 1622, by Rep. Helen Giddings and Sen. Judith Zaffirini, creates a grant program to provide children at risk of hunger or obesity with increased access to nutritious foods. o SB 1027, by Sen. Kirk Watson and Rep. Tim Kleinschmidt, establishes an interagency farm-to-school task force to promotea healthy diet for school children by facilitating the use of locally grown food products in public schools. o SB 282, by Sen. Jane Nelson and Rep. Rob Eissler, creates a grant program to provide nutrition education to children. Continued on next page

o SB 1344, by Sen. Kirk Watson and Rep. Rob Eissler, requires State Board of Education to adopt essential knowledge and skills that address binge drinking and alcohol poisoning for inclusion in health curriculum. o SB 161, by Sen. Rodney Ellis and Rep. Linda Harper Brown, creates a new specialty license plate to support Safe Routes to School Program. After deduction of the department’s administrative costs, the remainder of the purchase cost will go to the Safe Routes to School Program to promote bicyclist safety, education and access through education and training. • SCHOOL FINANCE: - o HB 3646, by Rep. Scot Hochberg and Sen. Florence Shapiro, seeks to return to the extent possible to a formula-driven public school finance system that improves equity and reduces recapture. o SB 300, by Sen. Dan Patrick and Rep. Mark Shelton, in its original form this bill removed the 22-1 elementary class size re-quirement. As finally passed, the bill seeks to reduce unfunded mandates on schools by: • Allowing a school district to choose between two methods for posting job vacancies rather than requiring a district to use both methods • Extending the expiration date of a district-level class size exception from the end of the semester for which it is granted to the end of the school year for which it is granted and removes a prohibition against the Commissioner of Education’s granting an exception for more than one semester at a time • Authorizing, rather than requiring, a school district to conduct school bus evacuation training once a year• Requiring a school district to establish a long-range energy plan to reduce the consumption of electric energy • Repealing a requirement begun in 2007 that a school district board of trustees establishes a goal to reduce the annual elec-tric consumption by five percent each year for six years. • SCHOOL ACCOUNTABILITY - HB 3, by Rep. Rob Eissler and Sen. Florence Shapiro, the school accountability system remake bill passed with several components sought by Texas PTA: o Requirement for high school students to take one credit of PE and one credit of fine arts o Areas of Distinction for Campuses that include fine arts, physical education, 21st Century Workforce Development, in addi-tion to academic achievement o The addition of a broader array of applied courses and career and technology courses to be eligible for the 3rd and 4th year of math and science o Allowing student growth to count toward passing and college-readiness standards o Allowing a waiver so that performance of one sub-population will no longer “fail” a district o Requiring multiple measures to be used for awards of distinction o Ending the 65% rule. • STATEWIDE SMOKE-FREE LAW FAILS - One major piece of legislation that Texas PTA supported and that failed this ses-sion is SB 544 by Sen. Rodney Ellis/HB 5 by Rep. Myra Crownover, the statewide smoke-free legislation. While there was strong support among members of the House, the chairman of the House committee to which the bill was sent, Rep. Burt Solo-mons of Carrollton was unwilling to allow it to be placed on the House calendar for debate until the Senate voted the bill out. The chairman of the Senate committee, Sen. Jane Nelson of Lewisville, delayed a vote on the bill in committee and support eroded in the Senate.

Corbell Elementary PTA

Corbell PTA is off to a great start. We have 450 PTA members al-ready signed up, and we are aim-ing for 100% participation. On Tuesday, September 8th we hosted our 4th annual Family Fun Night. Families are encouraged to grab the picnic basket and enjoy dinner on the lawn! PTA provides des-serts to everyone. It’s a great op-portunity for our families to get together and have some fun. The kids were entertained with live mu-sic by Dano, Nickelodeon’s Parent Pick Award winner for Best Chil-dren’s Entertainer in DFW, a bounce house and face painting. We are looking forward to another successful Wild Walk next month! Our kids will walk or run laps to earn money for their school. This will bring lots of exciting programs for both our children and parents. Eddie Coker, Aim for Success, Al-borado-Celebrating Mexican Heri-tage and Critterman just to name a few. Curtsinger Elementary PTA

Curtsinger Elementary is celebrat-ing their continued Blue Ribbon status as a school of merit in the state of Texas! Channel 11 was on the scene to catch all the cheers and excitement as the staff, stu-dents and parents released 60 blue balloons into the skies of Frisco on Friday, August 28th 2009. Our new Principal, Mrs. Angela Borgerallo entertained Channel 11 news crews as well as students with her ener-getic cheers and speech! *these were approved, bio-degradable, envi-ronmentally safe balloons*.

We are very proud of our

Curtsinger PTA Con’t

We are recycling those silver, shiny juice pouches you see all the chil-dren with. The students can bring them in before school, during lunch anytime and simply drop them off. Angel reports that we are now col-lecting 120 or more of these juice pouches daily, that is over 600 per week! That is roughly 2400 per month! WOW! WOW! Way to go Curtsinger Elementary! These recy-cle bins are collected by TERRACY-CLE and then cleaned and con-verted back into everyday products that the students truly enjoy and can use. Maybe you have seen these products in Target, the hand-bags, the wallets, the zipper con-tainers all made out of these shiny juice bags!? The students loved the idea and have really taken to it! Proudly de-positing any and all shiny juice bags they can round up! Even the little ones in K and first grade un-derstand that they are helping to make trash into something cool, neat and usable! It is apparent that they are very proud to be actually "doing something that only adults get to do"...that is how many of them saw "recycling"....so what Angel Hehner, Curtsinger PTA and Curtsinger Elementary is doing is teaching very strong positive life lessons....!!! YOU do COUNT, and YOU can MAKE THE DIFFERENCE in your WORLD

Pink Elementary PTA

Pink is off to a great start. We cur-rently have 732 PTA members to date with 100% participation from our faculty. We hosted our first staff luncheon on back to school night and hope our teachers en-joyed it as they prepared to wel-come back our children for another successful year at Pink. We love our staff at Pink elementary!


Our students and staff came back to school to a shade cover that covers and protects our entire playground equipment! We are so happy to have been able to accomplish this with funds raised last year with our Boosterthon ‘Fun Run’. We will be holding our second ‘Boosterthon’ fun run on Oct 16th and expect it to be as successful as last year. Our fall and spring book fairs are scheduled for Nov and Feb respectively. We have several edu-cational programs scheduled for this year to enhance the learning ex-perience of our students at Pink elementary. All time favorites like Nana Puddin’ and hands on ones like High Tech High Touch. We are once again partnering with WOGA gymnastics to provide a ‘parents night out’ for our families with 25% of all proceeds coming back to Pink. Our spirit nights in-clude Peter Piper Pizza and Chris-tina’s along with a few more that are still in the works. Thank you to all our families and faculty for making Pink the best elementary in Frisco! We are looking forward to an excit-ing year here at Pink.

Smith Elementary PTA

Our Smith PTA is extremely excited for another school year. The Spirit Shop started us off at Meet the Teacher night with a spectacular opening. On the first day of school, our Hos-pitality threw the annual Tears and Cheers Social for the Kindergarten parents. We saw some tears in the beginning that we soon turned into laughter amongst new friends.

September was started off with an

energizing BoosterThon Kick-off assembly on the 1st day of the month. The children, parents and staff have been incredible with their participation. The rain shut us out on our first couple of scheduled plans. Nothing would stop us as we moved inside to the gym and café for the Fun Run day. September 15th was a day of non-stop excite-ment. After the Fun Run, the chil-dren had a special visit from author Jarrett Krosoczka.

Sparks Elementary PTA Sparks Elementary will hold their 2nd annual Boosterthon Fun Run on Wednesday, September 23rd. The Boosterthon Fun Run program pro-vides a healthy alternative to tradi-tional product sales to raise much needed funds for the school. The program promotes three specific values during a 10 day fun filled program: Fitness, Education and Character. The program culminates with the actual Fun Run on the 23rd, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Special guests for this event include Deuce from the RoughRid-ers, the Pioneer Middle School Marching Band, and many more. Sparks Elementary is Reading Around the World Sparks Elementary will be host-ing their Scholastic Book Fair on October 9th and 13th through 15th. The theme this fall is Read Around the World. As part of the fair, they will be hosting two special family events, Dailies with Dad on Friday, the 9th, where Dads and other loved ones can shop at the book fair before school and can pick up coffee and a copy of the Dallas Morning News while they are there. On Thursday, October 15th, families can shop in the evening before and after our PTA meeting and 5th grade musical. Sparks Elementary Wins National Award Sparks Elementary was chosen as the First Place winner in the Scholastic National Elementary Book Fair Contest for their "Lights! Camera! Book Fair!" fair in the Spring. Sparks prepared an entry and was chosen based on criteria such as decorations, commu-nity/faculty/volunteer involvement, philanthropy and new ideas. Lead-ership from Scholastic's Headquar-ters will be coming to present their award, which includes $2000 from

the Scholastic resource catalog for books and equipment for our classrooms and library, as well as a visit from Gordon Korman, author of many books such as Swindle, The 39 Clues - One False Note and Schooled. This exciting event will take place on October 16th and promises to be a memorable occasion.

Taylor Elementary PTA

While the students had time off this summer, many Taylor PTA Parents were busy planning for our 2009/2010 school year. They spent many hours scheduling educational programs, designing and ordering spirit wear, preparing for Meet the Teacher Night, contacting busi-nesses to advertise and fund our directory, developing work plans,

creating staff welcome gifts, design-ing bulletin boards, stuffing PTA Packets, working on fundraising programs to pay for our activities, and much more. The planning paid off as we started this year off smoothly and with great enthusi-asm.

At Meet the Teacher Night, we opened the cafeteria early and sold Spirit Wear, had a Membership Drive and had information available on upcoming programs, Reflections, Environmental, Fundraising and Di-rectory. It was a great success and kicked-off the new school year excitement. On the first day of school, the PTA sponsored a 'Tears and Cheers' for Kindergarten Par-ents so they could feel welcomed to the great school of Taylor and learn more about our PTA. In the PTA packet, information was distributed on becoming a PTA Member, volun-teering, school directory approval, Kroger share program, Box Top in-formation and the SAGE contact sheet. All PTA members will receive a free directory once complete which will be mid-October.

Tears & Cheer Event

Our first General Meeting for the year will be Monday, October 5th, and, immediately following the meeting, our second annual bike rodeo will take place. We had a stock-the-pantry drive in September in which par-ents donate non-perishable food items to stock our staff's break room -- which is a great relief during a busy day at school!

Our main fundraiser this year will be sales from the Sally Foster Catalogue and Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie Dough and will run for the last two weeks in September. One of our main pro-grams this year we are sponsoring is "High Touch/High Tech" in which each grade level chooses an enrichment program applicable to their curriculum and schedule it anytime during the school year. The programs are aligned with national and state science stan-dards and the students get to experi-ence hands-on experiments.

At Taylor our motto is "Reach High. Go Far. Think Smart" and the PTA is excited to help each stu-dent in striving towards this goal!

Clark Middle PTA

Wow! It has already been a busy year for Clark Middle School. We started out the year with a Staff Luncheon. This was an opportunity for the faculty and staff to enjoy a ‘Back to School’ social while also being introduced to the 2009-2010 CMS PTA board members.


Fundraising has already begun as the school has already participated in a Barnes and Noble Night and a Chick-fil-a Night. We will also host a CiCi’s Pizza Night starting in Sep-tember.

The Reflections program has begun! The theme for this year is ‘The Beauty Is…’ This is an excellent program where students have a chance to express themselves through literature, visual arts, pho-tography, dance, music, and film. We can’t wait to see what our stu-dents create.

Our PTA Membership Drive is still going on. We hope to set new re-cords this year before it ends Octo-ber 1.

Fundraiser kicks off in October. Parents will have different choices on how they want to contribute to the fundraiser.

The Fall Bookfair is scheduled for late October. What a great venue for teachers, students, and their families to stock up on books!

Red Ribbon Week is will be October 26-30, 2009.

Griffin Middle PTA

Griffin Middle School is off to a booming start! We have 638 PTA members to date and have raised $10,034 with our one check fund-raiser.

Our “Back to School Teacher Lunch-eon” was a Baked Potato bar with salad and home made desserts. Our wonderful staff at Griffin en-joyed lunch as they prepared their classrooms to welcome back all the students for another successful year.

We hosted a “Donuts with the Principal” on Sept 1st and had over 60 parents attend for an informa-tional Q&A session.

The Griffin PTA donated funds for teacher banners for all our teachers to hang outside their doors thus helping the students find class-rooms easier while walking through the hallways.

Griffin Middle PTA con’t

Large exterior urns where added to enhance the entrance to our school.

We will be hosting our family “Fall Festival” on September 28th from 5-7pm and hope to have all our stu-dents turn out for this free social event. We will also be collecting canned food to help the food pantry at Frisco Family Services during this event. An “Internet Safety” parent program, is also going to be avail-able for the parents .This event is a great way for the families at Griffin to get to know each other. The Griffin PTA would like to say “Thank You” to all our teachers, families and the community for their support. We are off to a great year at Griffin Middle School!


Roach Middle PTA

Roach PTA's Fall Membership Drive is off and running. We kicked into high gear by an-nouncing a competition among the Roach Tribes. Tribes will be com-peting to see which Tribe can bring in the most memberships by October 2nd. Weekly updates will show who is in the lead and the winning Tribe will be rewarded with a Popcorn Party sponsored by the Roach PTA.
