The preparation for the Waldorf 100 centenary
celebrations this year is well under way, with many
impulses and initiatives taking place around the
world. Our senior Little Yarra Ensemble students are working hard to prepare for their trip to
Europe in September, which will culminate in their contribution to the festivities in Berlin.
It is equally important for us to feel part of the family of Australian Steiner schools as well as be
connected to our greater international educational movement. We are able to do this in a number of
ways, including hosting exchange students from other Australian schools, LYE tours, interschool
sports events and more.
As staff, we frequently engage in attending conferences and other events that take place at Steiner
schools around the country. We also put a lot of effort into hosting events, such as the national
Student Support Conference that took place here this weekend. It was a wonderful opportunity for
the participants to immerse themselves deeply into the process of transforming raw materials and
directly experience how this can be therapeutic for all children.
Bernie and I will be attending the SEA Delegates’ Meeting this coming weekend. The March meeting
serves as the AGM, where the governance aspects of our national body are dealt with. We also hear
reports from members who have been involved with international initiatives and schools, or have
attended gatherings and conferences overseas. This time, we will be sharing feedback from the
Student Support conference, and will certainly feel proud to be part of this vibrant, continually
growing international educational movement.

Term 1 – Week 7 Tuesday 12th March 2019
From Calendar of the Soul by Rudolf Steiner
Verse 23 The senses’ enticements
Dampen themselves autumn like; In light-revelation merges The fog’s dimming veil.
I see in the expanses of space The autumn’s winter sleep.
The summer has to me Itself surrendered.

MARIMBAS FOR PARENTS Damien
From the beginning of Term 2 the school would like to offer a musical activity to the parents. Each
Tuesday (Term 2) I will run a Marimba workshop for parents. This will be offered on a Tuesday
morning from 8:45 until 9:15 followed by a short social gathering for us to enjoy a cup of tea or
coffee and reflect on the experience. The Marimba Class will be in the old Class 7 room which is next
to the Drama Studio and the social activity will be in the main building. You don’t need to have any
musical experience or understanding to partake in the class. The Marimba class will be a unique
experience the school is offering to give you, as parents, an insight into some of your children’s
musical experiences. Please email me your intention to be a part of the class at
LISA DEVINE VISIT John We are pleased to welcome Lisa Devine back to our school for a visit next week in which she will be
working with Classes 4 to 8. Lisa will also be giving two parent talks as follows:
Tues 19th 7:30 – 9:00: Kindergarten parent presentation on how to support the education in your
home life. In the Admin building
Wed 20th 7:30 – 9:00: Parent presentation for Classes 5 to 9 on navigating the middle school years
with your child. In the Admin building
We look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible!
CLASS 3 NEWS Zoe
Class 3 have had a busy, productive start to the year and have soaked up many fresh experiences; learning new instruments, brand new subjects with new teachers and a vast new playground. Most recently, the class have been thinking of different ways to show familiar math concepts, such as operations in sums and the times tables. We have also welcomed new students, and thereby multiplied in numbers... the smallest additions being our two new furry classmates, Motley and Tawny. They are proving to be rather quiet, shy baby rats, being only 7 weeks old now, but they are quickly growing in confidence as they have been so warmly welcomed to their new home by the wonderful class 3 students.
BACH’S ST JOHN PASSION Damien
We are fast approaching the
performance of Bach’s St John
Passion in the city on April 5th. We
shall be spending the day in the
city rehearsing and then the final
performance at St Peter’s
Cathedral in the city at 6:30 pm.
We will supply busses into the city
departing from LYSS at 8:50 am
and they will be available to bring
students back to LYSS arriving at
approximately 10:30 – 11:00 pm. I
will send home a letter home
tomorrow asking parents to
indicate if they are expecting to
take their child/children from the
performance or if they are
expecting to pick them up from
LYSS after the performance. This is
vital information for our
planning process so please take the
time to carefully complete and
return the form. I would like the
forms to be returned by this Friday
the 15th March.
Looking forward to an amazing
event.
A FEW GENTLE REMINDERS Leanne
Thanks to everyone who are observing the ‘no drive’ zone through the roundabout at school times.
For new parents, please drop off your children in the drop off zones at the top of the roundabout and
use the small roundabout for exit. Alternatively you can park in the parent car park and walk down
the pathways into the school.
Please do not bring dogs onto the school grounds at any time for Health and Safety reasons.
Visitors are reminded to sign in at the Office upon entering School grounds.
All parents are reminded to sign in at the Office upon entering School grounds at times other than
drop off and pick up.
LOOKING FOR BILLETS Damien
At the beginning of Term 3 we are hoping to have a visit from Judith Clingon’s Wayfarers group. This
musical ensemble will be traveling the world bringing the gift of music as part of the Waldorf 100 year
celebration. We are looking for 14 families to billet 2 individuals for 2 evenings. The group arrives
Wednesday 17th July departs Friday 19th July, at the beginning of term 3. You would need to provide
a bed, feed them and get them to and from school including an evening performance at LYSS on the
Thursday evening. It is a chance to make new connections with other Steiner teachers/students from
across the globe. The performers are from Australia, India, Switzerland, Japan and Taiwan. Please
email me if you are interested in hosting, [email protected].
I look forward to hearing from interested families.
STUDY GROUP Glenn
Parents and Staff are invited to join a Study Group exploring Steiner’s 6 Basic
exercises and the lectures that relate to them. There is no cost to be part of
the group. The book, “Six Steps in Self-development ~The 'supplementary
Exercises' is available for $20 from https://www.fishpond.com.au/Books/Six-Steps-Self-Development-Rudolf-Steiner-Ates-
Baydur/9781855842373
A short video clip can be found here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pjo3iy4kfdM
The Study Group will gather in the school’s Library 9:40 – 11 am on
Wednesday 13th February, then every fortnight thereafter. We discuss many
topics related to Anthroposophy.
BAND CONCERT Michael
There will be a band concert in the music hall at 7:30 pm on Wednesday March 27, after the
individual music performances. Dirtbox, the Jazz Band and the yet-to-be-named class 8 band
featuring Stef, Erica and friends will feature, along with some other exciting acts. Feel free to come
along to support the young performers and enjoy the show!
END OF TERM CONCERTS Damien
The end of term concerts are approaching fast, they are only two weeks away. Unfortunately class 8
will be away and on their bike riding camp. Instead of missing the chance to share their musical gifts
we are giving them the opportunity to perform. The class 8 students and anyone who is unable to be
at the end of term concerts, will be expected to be a part of a musical sharing at lunch the following
day. The music department would like to stress to the parents that we do not see this as a punitive
measure, instead we believe it is a genuine opportunity to display the work students have completed
throughout the term.
END OF TERM MUSIC CONCERTS Julie The end of term concerts for Term 1 will be on Wednesday 27th March. These concerts are an excellent opportunity for the children to share their musical talents with family and friends. It is difficult to make changes to the list, however, it is possible if done in a timely fashion. If you need to make a request, please ring and speak to Damien. It is best to catch him between 9:15 - 10:30 in the morning. More information regarding the band concert will be coming shortly.

For parents/guardians of students:
2019 Student Residential Address and Other Information collection notice
This notice is from the Australian Government Department of Education and Training (the department), to advise you that the department has requested that your child’s school provide a statement of addresses, in accordance with the Australian Education Regulation 2013 (Cth) (Regulation).
A statement of addresses contains the following information about each student at the school:
Student residential address (not student names)
Student level of education (i.e. whether the student is a primary or secondary student)
Student boarding school status (i.e. whether the student is boarding or a day student)
Names and residential addresses of students’ parent(s) and/or guardian(s)
Schools generate a record number for each student for the purposes of this collection, which is also provided to the department.
Purpose of the collection
This collection is routinely used to inform Commonwealth school education policy, and to help ensure that Commonwealth funding arrangements for non-government schools are based on need, and are fair and transparent.
On 20 September 2018 the Government announced that it will implement a new, improved capacity to contribute methodology used in the calculation of the Commonwealth’s needs-based funding arrangements for non-government schools. This follows a review of the existing socio-economic status (SES) score methodology by the National School Resourcing Board. Further information about the review and the Government’s response can be found here: https://www.education.gov.au/review-socio-economic-status-ses-score-methodology.
The information collected in the statement of addresses will be used to refine the new capacity to contribute methodology and may also be used in school funding calculations from 2020.
Use and disclosure of personal information
Your personal information is protected by law, including the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). Any use and disclosure of your personal information relating to the statement of addresses will occur in accordance with the Regulation.
Your personal information may be used by the department, or disclosed to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), for the purposes of SES score policy development, reviewing SES score methodology, calculating SES scores, Commonwealth school education policy development (including school funding), or where it is otherwise required or authorised by law.
For example, your personal information may be provided to the ABS for statistical and research purposes, which includes data integration projects such as the Multi-Agency Data Integration Project (MADIP). Further information on the MADIP can be found here:
http://www.abs.gov.au/websitedbs/D3310114.nsf/4a256353001af3ed4b2562bb00121564/9099c77cb979d558ca258198001b27a0/$FILE/MADIP%20iPIA_2018.pdf.
The department may, from time to time, carry out audits of school submissions. In the event of an audit, contracted auditors may seek to compare a school’s statement of addresses with student enrolment information held by the school. These contractors will not use the information for any other purpose.
The department may also be required to disclose your personal information to its service providers, including the Australian Government Department of Jobs and Small Business, for the purposes of the provision of information and communications technology (ICT) support services to the department.
What do you need to do?
You are not required to do anything. Your school is responsible for providing the requested details to the department, however, you may wish to ensure that your school has the most up-to-date and correct details for your family.
Contacts for further information
Your school can provide additional information about the process of the address collection.
If you have any further questions regarding the collection, you can contact the department by:
Email: [email protected]
Phone (free call): SES helpdesk on 1800 677 027 (Option 4)
The department’s privacy policy is available on the department’s website at www.education.gov.au. The privacy policy contains information about:
how individuals can access and seek correction of the personal information held by the department;
how complaints about breaches of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) can be made; and
how the department will deal with these complaints.
