November 2017 Cheshvan Kislev 5778 Volume 21, Issue 6 From Our Spiritual Leader Cantor Henry Shapiro Family, clan, tribe, nation, government We all know Israel currently has a modern government based on the parliamentary democracy system with a prime minister as head of a multi-party system. But what other styles of government did Israel previously have, particularly in Biblical Israel? This question arose when I saw in parsha Lech Lecha, that Abraham had a war with the 4 local ‘kings’ in Canaan. Kings are in quotes because they are more in the sense of being rulers of city-states, i.e. a single city and its surrounding territory. At that point in the Torah, Abraham and his 318 men defeat the 4 kings and free his nephew Lot. He is then more a leader of an extended family or clan. It isn’t til Jacob goes down to Egypt in the book of Exodus that they grow into a people and nation with 12 tribes. As we begin reading the Torah again, we see a progression of human society and government as we go through the Bible. We start in Genesis with Adam and Eve, to Noah in an unorganized and dis-functional society, to a land of various territories of local kings. Thereafter we are eventually introduced to larger and different nations. After the patriarchs and time in Egypt, the Jewish people see a number of forms of leadership and organization. Moses becomes the 1st religious, military and administrative leader of the people and now nation of Israel. Family, clan, tribe, nation, government We all know Israel currently has a modern government based on the parliamentary democracy system with a prime minister as head of a multi-party system.

Thereafter the governmental form roughly follows the following books in the Tanakh. Those pertinent books being: Book of Joshua - Moses’ successor takes a similar but more military role as they move in the land of Canaan. Book of Judges - when the land is settled, each tribe had its own territory. It was ruled by regional and tribal military leaders who also preside over legal matters and hearings. Kings - in the more classic sense of ruling a large territory and people(s). Kings may represent an independent Israel such as King Solomon or be a king ruler on behalf of an empire such as King Herod, the client king of Rome in Judea. This is a very simplistic and basic overview. There were many outside influences and the role of the priests and prophets in ancient Israel we could discuss for days. Some of these points can be found in the commentaries in our JPS Bible we use on Shabbat mornings. Also, I came across a website that gives some overall Hebrew Bible information with articles pertaining to this and other subjects - https://theisraelbible.com Kol tuv, Cantor Henry Shapiro

From the President’s Desk………………………….Robert E. Korfin We lost our dear Leslie Rubin on October 10th. It’s a date that is etched in my mind and in my heart. It’s a date that is locked in my memory bank like September 11th or November 22, 1963. I can’t get it out of my mind, and I think that is a good thing as it gives me something to hold on to. It feels like there’s a void at PJC, especially on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. The dictionary said of the word Void: Completely Empty; and that would be completely wrong. If that’s the case, the idea of a void would be incorrect. Leslie may be gone, but I am left with memories that will be with me for the rest of my lifetime. I will have the memory of Leslie walking into the Social Hall on Saturday mornings before the start of services; usually carrying an insulated bag with food items that she would prepare along with her culinary partner Diane. Often, Les would stop where I would be sitting with Bernie before the service began. She would give me a pat on the shoulder, or a light kiss on the cheek, or a short hug. In doing so, in my mind it was a reminder that no matter the weather, this was going to be a wonderful day. In our old Shabbat prayer book, they made mention of angels. They were Cherubin and Seraphim. I never realized it all of these years, but Leslie Rubin was an angel who walked amongst us. Whatever she did at PJC made things better. My life is better from knowing her. I loved Leslie and I’ll never forget her. In spite of our losses in October, I hope November will be a peaceful month for all of us. Have a Happy Thanksgiving, stay safe, and then we’ll talk again…

Help Wanted

“Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends”, as John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote, holds special meaning for me. This one simple line sums up so much in our lives. So too, this extends into our shul, our Parkway family. With the heartbreaking loss of our cherished friend Leslie, tasks that were once routine for me have become somewhat formidable. Many of you have stepped up and assisted me in the kitchen through this difficult time, and this is greatly appreciated. Our members are quite generous and there is hardly a Friday evening oneg or Saturday morning kiddush without a sponsor. When looking at our numbers, this is phenomenal. However, this also means a considerable amount of planning, shopping, preparing, serving, and cleaning almost every week. This is not a one person operation, and the kitchen is not “Diane’s kitchen”. Please, I am asking for help. I’m hoping to secure a small group of individuals willing to learn what and where things are in “our” kitchen so no one individual is overburdened. Without a network to work with, I’m afraid that some requests for sponsorships may be turned down in the future. I stay optimistic and believe we can avoid this. Contact me via home phone 412-373-9240, email [email protected], or text 412-378-1069 if you are able to help. Again, as Lennon and McCartney wrote, “I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends”. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Heads Up Macy’s Hanukkah Celebration Macy’s Waterfront 12/17/17, Sunday 1-3pm w/music, dancing, food and arts and crafts - free

the Westmoreland Heritage Trail in early October We will meet at the B-Y Park lot. From there we we’ll ride up the trail (upstream) for about 45 minutes and then turn around and go back - even if there’s cold temperatures or light rain. The pace will be moderate. We can go afterwards for coffee and a nosh if people are so inclined. There’s no official address per se for the park so it can be hard to find if you haven’t been. The following address should get you close - 833 7th St.,Trafford, PA 15085, just up the road from Parkside Creamery. https://www.facebook.com/pages/BY-Park-TraffordPa/138365502903736 https://www.traillink.com/trail/westmoreland-heritage-trail/
