From smoke-signals to tweets and posts: methods and messages are changing
GCA2013
Wednesday 13 - Friday 15 February 2013 Swissotel Sydney, 68 Market Street Sydney
www.govcomms.com.au
With new technologies allowing more accurate, immediate and up to date communications, how do we define the best methods and messages for our audience?
What are the best communications platforms?
How do we connect and engage with our people?
What information do our people want and need?
These are challenging questions and having the right response can mean the difference between success and failure.
KEY PRESENTATIONS BY Anders Sorman-Nilsson - Innovation Intersections: tapping diversity in thinking
Anders is the founder and creative director of the research and strategy company
Thinque; active member of TEDGlobal; and the curator of the Social Media & Communications Summit.
Innovation happens at the intersection of thought. Your team members all have unique gifts and talents - one of them is the authentic way they think, communicate and solve problems. To harness the thinking capital in your organisation you need to create innovation intersections that encourage your people to contribute their unique intelligence at work.

communicators. Drs Peter Simmons and Felicity Small from Charles Sturt University are doing a national study of local government communication professionals and the work we do. This study will help us to understand and develop as a profession. Although local government communication is an essential part of Australian life, this is the first national study of its kind in Australia. It will help us to understand and plan for:
the people who work in communication-related work for local government
the type of work done by local government communicators
professional development and other needs of local government communicators.
Dr Peter Simmons Associate Head of School Charles Sturt University

12 -12.45pm Lunch
12.45 -1.30pm Crisis Communication - why everyone should have a plan! Case Study: Sink or Swim - Griffith's Flood Crisis! In March 2012 Griffith and surrounds were flooded - Griffith is inland regional centre with city centre 40kms from the nearest waterway! The council, SES, Fire & Police had no flood crisis strategy; no communications unit set up. Naomi Brugger was all that remained of Griffith's comms department after staff cuts. A very steep learning curve - learning to work with the media, the populace, emergency departments on the run. Should all councils have an emergency plan? YES! Has the traditional role of PR changed? YES! No longer simply notifying newspapers & providing info for Radio - Griffith Comms became the coordinator of local, state & volunteer workers!
Naomi Brugger Corporate Communications Griffith City Council

The Panel will consist:
20 something - call centre leader, news cartoonist, blogger
30 something - online journalist
40 something - community engagement practitioner and accredited facilitator
50 something - employee engagement, internal communications practitioner
