From the Commission President The last few years have been extraordinarily challenging for living history museums across the country and Historic St. Mary's City is no exception. Fortunately our professional staff (the best anywhere, btw) was quick to recognize and deal with the economic challenges. As a result our museum operations and programs survived intact. Moreover the museum is positioned to provide a more unique experience as we enhance our web presence and the resources we provide to teachers and students. Helping students learn the lessons from St. Mary's City's past is doubly important in 2011 as we see so many countries struggle with how to transition from dictatorship and monarchy rule to a more viable and sustainable governance structure. They would do well to look to the example of the Calverts and the 17th century Maryland settlers as they formed one of the first and most successful representative democracies for effective governance of a diverse population. HSMC Education ProgramsNew Challenges, New Numbers

HSMC's educational programs achieved excellencethis past year in spite of a challenging economicclimate. Our goal has been to increase visitation whilecontinuing to provide excellent patron service. This wasaccomplished by adding new programs and streamliningexisting offerings. These programs enabled us to reachout to our local Southern Maryland community as well aslarger audiences statewide and, in some cases, beyondour state borders.

Living history experiences, such as our schooltour programs, continue to attract schools from acrossMaryland with 17,426 students, parents, and teachersvisiting HSMC in the spring of 2010 (a 11% increasefrom the 2009 spring season). Our Home School Daynumbers increased by drawing families from all parts ofMaryland, including the Baltimore and Western Marylandregions, as well as Virginia. In addition to our daily interactive living historyprograms, our special events programs brought historyto life for an increase of visitors in 2010. Traditionallysuccessful special events such as Woodland IndianDiscovery Day and Militia Muster both noted increasedvisitation from 2009, (WIDhad 23% increase invisitation, MM had 1.4% bump) while new specialevents, such as Grave Matters and Mid-summerFaire, attracted new audiences to HSMC by targetinglocal families. Grave Matters, a nighttime tour nearHalloween, appealed to neighboring communitymembers looking for a seasonal, yet educationalexperience, while Mid-summer Faire provided fun andgames to families looking beyond the video landscape.

Research, Archeology and Curation

The Research department has many exciting andimportant projects both new and ongoing. A new projectinvolving the treatment of Significant archaeologicalartifacts from the Town Center area will be funded bythe Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) aconservation grant in the amount of $141/000.Our archaeology field school is noted as the oldest, continuous field school in North America, and this yearexcavation continued in the yards around the LeonardCalvert House. In addition to new information on thearrangement of fences, the students discovered a cellar, probably a dairy. Our archaeology staff also continuesto give support and expertise to St. Mary's College ofMaryland conducting testing and mitigation for theAnne Arundel Hall replacement, Mill Field parking lot,and Margaret Brent Hall relocation as part of the overallMaryland Heritage Project.

Our professional staff spends much time off site aswell. Dr. Henry Miller represented us at in England atthe Center for Medieval Studies while researching chapelfitments of the 17th century and the Calvert family. Hiswork led to two study tours abroad in the United Kingdomand Ireland. The staff presented numerous lectures andpapers to the Preservation Maryland Conference, Societyfor Post-Medieval Archaeology in Newfoundland, and theCoopersmith Seminar at Oxford University. Staff membersspoke to crowds in the Written in Bone exhibit during"Forensic Fridays" at the Smithsonian Museum of NaturalHistory.

After much research, preservation, and the creation ofinterpretive panels the Mackall Barn exhibit was openedto the public. This exhibit continues the stories of HSMCby introducing significant aspects of life in 19th centurySouthern Maryland 19th•

The Museum is funded primarily by the State ofMaryland which is reflected in the General line in thechart below. The museum also funds activities withthe proceeds from the museum shop, ticket sales, andrental of the property for special events these funds arereflected in the Special line.

A Year of PreparationIn terms of results the year 2010 appeared rather

Quiet for the board of directors of the Foundation. Agood bit of work was being done behind the scenes andthere was much focus on updating and reorganizing. The Museum has hired an IT Manager and there hasbeen much progress in bringing the computerized filesinto reality. We are now better able to identify donorsand their contributions, as well as list all volunteersand their demographics. The work of the board hasbeen divided among various committees so as to allowindividual board members to concentrate on specificprojects.

All committees have developed action plans, meetregularly and are proceeding. At the annual meeting allcommittees will submit a short year end summary whichwill become part of the annual report. It is anticipatedthat the year 2011 will show the fruit of our labors. Asalways our main goal is to support the Museum and itsprograms. We feel strongly that Historic St. Mary's CityMuseum is an important asset to our local and regionalcommunity and worthy of support both financial and withour time.Sincerely,
