It has certainly been the highlight of my dental career. It was a privilege to help induct 180 new Fellows during the course of my visits with 13 of our 66 Sections, representing 8 of our 10 Academy Regions as your President. I remain grateful for the hospitality extended to me as I visited each of these Sections. These visits have afforded invaluable insights in assessing the growth and health of our Academy worldwide. They have also been an opportunity to help strengthen, as past president Eller put it, “our handclasp around the world”. This worldwide embrace is aptly demonstrated in the aspect of Fellowship that I have always appreciated the most, that of the camaraderie that I have experienced everywhere I have been since I started attending the Annual meeting as a Section Chair. It is inspiring and uplifting to find this friendship in all of our Regions. It is equally refreshing to see the creative projects pursued in the name of the PFA. I would like to highlight two of the most creative Section service projects that I’ve heard about. In addition to bringing in 23 new Fellows this year, the energetic Philippine Section really thought ‘outside-the-box’ about mentorship. They worked with a group of single mothers by facilitating a training program that taught them how to make and sell food items as a means of becoming self-sufficient. The Section brought in a chef who spent time teaching the women several recipes as well as how to market their wares. One of the other projects they took on this year was to provide head lice and scabies treatments for a group of aboriginal children in addition to teaching them how to care for their oral health. Our annual meeting is just around the corner, so meet us at the corner of 9th Street and K Street November 6-9 for our Annual Meeting events. “When I have nothing to do for an hour, and I don’t want to do anything, I neither read nor watch television. I sit back in a chair and let my mind relax. I do what I call idling. It’s as if the motorcar’s running but you haven’t got it in gear. You have to allow a certain amount of time in which you are doing nothing in order to have things occur to you, to let your mind think.”

–Mortimer Adler

An interesting concept isn’t it? How many times do we run out of ideas for a project

and continue to flail about without any progress. Maybe we’re working too hard on things at that point in time. Maybe we just need a break. In my part of the world, that time for a break is summer. Warm, pleasant days don’t last long here and people are very protective of those days. They are days reserved for time on beaches, ball fields, bicycles, and yes, lawn chairs, and of course family and friends.

Our professional lives are filled with decision-making times. They pile up like wood in a wood box, keeping 3M busy making Post-it notes in a myriad of colors. They look so festive, and in truth likely 90% of them really don’t matter and could wait. I actually tried one time just throwing all the stuff on my desk out and waited for the truly important stuff to return. It was amazing how lit-tle came back! I certainly don’t endorse that as a management technique, and you may rest assured that as an officer of PFA I take your notes and comments and concerns seriously. But how much of the rest matters?

How are your Sections doing? This time of year is also often when there are fewer meetings held. Perhaps it’s more of an idling time, a time for Fellows to sit back and just wait for new ideas to bubble

ber 2015 Pierre Fauch

up on how you can help your Section, Trustee district, and officers succeed. Can things be streamlined from the Central Of-fice to help your section? Pass along that crazy idea you had while idling. Jot a note to me. I’d love to hear from you. Some ideas won’t be able to be implemented due to constraints from budgets and rules but maybe the rule can be changed. Let’s hope that the adage, ‘Sometimes I just sits and thinks and sometimes I just sits,’ has benefits for PFA and, even better, benefits in your home and professional lives.

Mel Brooks, a comedian, actor, writ-er and producer of comedic films said a great thing about doing nothing: “Let’s have a merry journey, and shout about how light is good and dark is not. What we should do is not future ourselves so much. We should now ourselves more. ‘Now thyself’ is more important than ‘Know thyself’. Reason is what tells us to ignore the present and live in the future. So all we do is make plans. We think that somewhere there are going to be green pastures. It’s crazy. …………. Listen, now is good. Now is wonderful.”

Now is good! But I still hear ‘soon’ being even better. Hoping your Now is good.

Sincerely,

—Dr. MiKe SchafhauSerPresident-elect of the

all. Financially, we are doing well so far this year as of the end of the second quar-ter. I am proud of our Fellows and their efforts to serve people in their areas who need dental help, as well as those Fellows who donate their time and money for Overseas Missions. Our sense of service to our communities is truly remarkable.

One of the goals stated in our Strate-gic Plan is to “recognize and grow lead-ers of the dental profession”. Please do not hesitate to recommend people who fit this bill for membership in our Acad-emy. You can be assured that they will be made to feel welcome! Pierre Fauchard Academy

As my year ends as the Pierre Fauchard Academy’s Immedi-ate Past President, I can now

reflect upon my four years as an Academy Officer, six years as the USA Western Re-gion 5 Trustee on the Board of Trustees, and twelve years as the Northern Cali-fornia Section Chairperson. There were so many highlights: multiple Academy’s Board of Trustees business meetings; Awards Luncheons; Section Chair Caucus-es; Section service projects for the under-served; and, so many wonderful local Sec-tion meetings. As an Officer, I participated on the Executive Committee that works in concert with the Board of Trustees, Sec-tion Chairpersons, Executive Director and the Academy Fellows worldwide.

During recent years and with Section invitations, I represented the Officers and

Dan

Board of Trustees at events both in the United States and international Sections. The time spent with these Sections gave me the opportunity to gain knowledge about the commonalities and differences between Sections. I was able see how the various Sections conduct business and how Fellows participate in commu-nity service projects; recruit new Fellows; and, hold various social activities. Some-times, these service projects were funded by the PFA Foundation Section grants.

Also, as an Academy Officer I was invited by Section Chairpersons to their new Fellow induction and awards recog-nition ceremonies. Many times, I would have the honor to induct new Fellows into the Academy by reading the pledge and presenting the Academy ribbons, pins and certificates. Being an integral

part of these new Fellow inductions always made me very proud to repre-sent all Academy Fellows. An ongoing highlight was meeting the older Fellows and the newest inductees. When visit-ing these Sections, I have witnessed the Academy’s mission live in our Fellows.

During the last two years, I was able to express recognition to the best PFA Sections. My presidential theme was to recognize Model Sections and their Chairpersons. The 2014 Academy’s Board of Trustees created a new Model Section Award that recently presented to 21 inaugural sections worldwide. Strong Model Sections and their associated ac-tivities are the grassroots that nourish our Academy; and so, active Chairper-son’s involvement takes these sections to a higher level. Again, remember all real PFA activities occur at the local level.

In addition, our Executive Director Loralie Lowder is now well established. She and her staff handle an enormous amount of Academy activities over the last few years. Also, Dr. Fiona Collins has settled into the position for our publica-tions as our Dental World Editor.

In 2104, under the leadership of President Karyn Stockwell, the Academy created and applied a new strategic plan. Our new Pierre Fauchard Academy’s

mission is to ‘recognize and grow lead-ers in the dental profession, their com-munities and society’. Over the next few years, all Academy strategies, activities and services will reflect this mission. I look forward to a strong Academy future.

It is always exciting (and usually overwhelming) when I realize that the Annual Meeting is upon us

once again. It’s hard to believe that an-other PFA year is close to an end. I’m very excited that this issue of Dental World is reaching you prior to the An-nual Meeting.

We will celebrate the year with our President’s Reception at 5 pm on Friday evening, November 6th. It will be a great opportunity to stop by, mingle and en-joy a lite savory snack. This is a drop-in event, business dress.

I encourage all Fellows who can attend the Awards Luncheon to come and join us to celebrate the Fauchard Gold Medal, Elm-er S. Best, and Dental Trade and Industry Awards recipients, as well as to give recog-nition to the new Fellows and Model Sec-tions. It is always a great time, and so nice to see old friends and make new friends. I also want to invite all Section Chairs to come to the Section Chair Caucus on Satur-day, November 7th at 7:30 am. The caucus will be followed by the Awards Luncheon.

The Academy will be arranging a “Monuments by Moonlight” tour of our

capitol. This is a great opportunity to see the sites of Washington, DC. The plan-ning will all be done for you. Tickets for the tour can be purchased directly through the PFA on our website during the registration process. It is a beautiful city and, with the Monuments lit up at night, the tour will be spectacular. PFA Fellows, family, friends, and affiliate or-ganization members are all welcome to purchase tickets and join the tour.

Sunday, November 8th there will be a Presidents Dinner at 6:30 pm to recog-nize our outgoing President Dr. Karyn L. Stockwell and to welcome in our new President, Dr. Michael W. Schafhauser.

For Annual Meeting Registration please visit our website at www.fauchard.org and look for the Annual Meeting page. There is a link on that page that will take you di-rectly to the registration form. We look for-ward to seeing you at the Annual Meeting.

Canada is having two induction cer-emonies during 2015. Our first event

was held on Sunday evening, May 24th, at Club 357C in Montreal, in conjunction with Québec’s annual dental convention otherwise known as ‘Les Journées Den-taires Internationales du Quebec’. It was our Quebec section’s induction ceremo-ny, held predominately in French for our Quebec Fellows.

Dr. Sam Sgro took the helm for this undertaking. The venue was spectacular. The event, from cocktails to presenta-tions to supper and dessert, was held outdoors on a rooftop terrace, overlook-ing the city and the river. Dr. Karyn L. Stockwell, President of the Pierre Fau-chard Academy, was in attendance. Dur-ing our ceremony, Dr. Guy Maranda and Dr. Danielle Joly each received the Dis-tinguished Dentist citation.

Dr. Kevin Roach, Trustee of the Pierre Fauchard Academy Foundation, pre-sented a check for $10,000 to Dr. Pierre Tessier, representing the Foundation of the Quebec Order of Dentists, to sup-port its ‘Bouche B’ initiative – a project that aims to offer free dental care for the underprivileged. During the ceremony, 39 new Fellows were inducted, a record for Quebec.

The new Fellows are Drs. Jacques Au-ger, Cyndie Dubé-Baril, Claude Beaulieu, Denis Beauvris, Olivier Béchard, Louis Besner, Marie Blackburn, Marc Boisvert, Pierre Boisvert, Charles Chartrand, James

Learning to make pastries and delicacies in Cabantuan City.

The Philippines Section of the Pierre Fauchard Academy has been very

active with meetings, the induction of 23 new Fellows, and community outreach programs. Two of our outreach programs were aimed at increasing self-sufficiency and promoting health. The first of these was a project held last September in Ca-banatuan City. The goal of this project was to increase the ability of the wom-en, mostly single mothers, to provide for their families and be self- sufficient.

The program included step-by-step training on pastry-making and how to make other delicacies that they could then sell. The mentoring program ben-efitted 50 single parents who can now better sustain their children and meet their daily needs, with additional in-come that can improve their daily living conditions and contribute to educating their children.

The second outreach program was a mission held last October to help im-

prove the health of the Aetas, aboriginal people in The Philippines. This project was headed up by Dr. Armyl C. Banez, our Section Chair and involved a large number of PFA Fellows. The ‘alis kuto, alis galis, para sa kabataang malusog at malinis’ (banish lice and scabies for a healthy and hygienic youth) project ben-efitted not only the children, it helped the families of Limay, Bataan.

We first taught them how to perform oral hygiene and techniques for brushing their teeth. Then we taught them how to perform hand washing, remove lice and about scabies as a part of healthy living. We also distributed toothpaste, tooth-brushes, soaps, slippers and packaged food. In total, we were able to help 120 children and their families, who were grateful for the knowledge and informa-tion we provided to them on the ben-efits of oral and personal hygiene and prevention. Currently honorary Professor of Dentistry at King’s College London, Professor Wilson’s forty-five year career includes senior positions in dental education, research and publish-ing. From 2001 to 2012 he was Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Dean and Head of King College London’s interna-tionally renowned dental institute. He was also Deputy Vice Principal of King’s College London from 2009 to 2012. Previous honours and awards include a Dentistry Lifetime Contribution Award and the BDA’s John Tomes Medal.

In his inauguration address Profes-sor Wilson highlighted the importance

r

of coordinated healthcare with dentistry an integral part of whole-person care. He hoped, he said, for a move away from episodic towards preventative, continuous patient care with dentists and their teams rewarded for saving, rather than repairing, their patient’s teeth. In a separate Presidential Lecture
