The VosgesFarming is an ever-present feature of thelandscapes of the Fave and Morthe valleys, situatedbetween the summits of the Vosges mountains and Saint-Dié-des-Vosges. Indeed, agriculturecontinues to thrive in the area, as can be seenfrom the characteristic sandstone farmhouses in the outlying villages and hamlets.

The Alsace ValleysLocal life in the Val d’Argent was for many yearsmarked by the presence of first the mining and then the textile industry. As you walk along a nature trail or visit a museum, you willfind numerous traces of this illustrious heritage.

The predominantly agricultural Kayserberg Valleyhas a diversified heritage: traditional countryactivities (well represented in the museums) and a wide choice of walks and excursions.

The VineyardsWinegrowing was introduced by the Romans in the 5C and the vineyards now stretch out alongthe foothills of the Vosges. The towns and villagesare remarkable for their architectural splendour, in particular their half-timbered houses and medieval fortifications.

In the north of the Ballons des VosgesRegional Nature Park, at the gates of theDonon massif and the vineyards ofAlsace, the minerals of the sandstoneVosges plateau have been exploited forseveral centuries. In the Middle Ages,the silver mines brought prosperity tocertain valleys while the monuments andhouses in many a town and village werebuilt with material from the sandstonequarries.

There are any number of things to see and do in the region: nature sites, museums,monuments, rural heritage, nature trails, footpaths, mountain-bike circuits, etc. Andthere is no shortage of organised activities and events: natureexpeditions, concerts, village fairs and festivals,country markets and so on. You will find full details of these and other activitiesin the calendars published by the Ballons desVosges Regional Nature Park or from the localTourist Offices.

Between the Fave and the Meurthe

In the heart of the village and not far from the orchard,the Musée de la Figurine (Figurine Museum) gives a good idea of craft production in the mountains.A collection of little wooden, tin and lead soldierssummon up the different periods of our past.

Several churches are crowned by a distinctivebulb-shaped tower. Thesetowers would seem to bethe work of carpentersfrom the Tyrol and Bavariain the 18C. Typical exam-ples include the churchesof Provenchères-sur-Fave,Bertrimoutier and Colroy-la-Grande.

Circuit des Ponsez � .Walk overlooking theHaute Meurthe valley. Thecircuit helps us to graspthe magnitude of the workcarried out in the past to separate the differentplots of land with littlegranite walls.

In the heart of the valleyand off the beaten path,the Haute-Meurthe multi-activity track allows you to travel fromvillage to village or linkup with the signpostedpaths of the neighbouringmountains.

The Spitzemberg summit was once occupied by a Gallo-Roman fortand later by a medieval castle (dismantled in the 17C). The summitwas the scene of fierce fighting in 1914 and is riddled with tren-ches. It can be reached by a footpath � . From the foot of the Spitzemberg, walk through the Bois des Faîtes(wood) and admire the green forest environment of the Petite andGrande Fosse mountain bike trail VTT .15

At the Col du Las (pass), the arboretum and the Belfaysnature trail show how the forest has evolved over

the years and give a splendid view over the Climont massif.A signpost near the “4 bornes” leads to a contemporary work of art entitled Windbreaker � .

Not far from here, you can enjoy fine views over the area at the Beau Soleil site .9

Around Ban-de-LavelineAt Ban-de-Laveline, a hydraulic haut-ferwith bucket wheel reminds us of the sawing activity. Between Wisembach and Ban-de-Laveline, the Galiléo footpath boasts numerousviewpoints and the itinerary is dotted with information panels.

La Croix-aux-MinesThe mines were exploited as early as the 10C andreached a peak of activity in the 15C and 16C. In thecompany of the Renaissance artist Heinrich Gross, learnabout the heyday of themines along two discoveycircuits: the Argent duChipal

and the Montagne d’Argent .32

MandrayThe numerous lintels are characteristic of the

farmhouses in the Saint-Dié area. The mountainhabitat and the symbolism of the sculptures are

explained along two two circuits .

Sawmill built in 1905 on the site of a 16C flour mill. The haut-fer(a single-blade saw peculiar to the Vosges and used forcutting wood lengthways) has recently been restored and demonstrations are regularlyscheduled.

GérardmerGérardmer Known as the Pearl of the Vosges, the Lac de Gérardmer is a remnantfrom the last ice age, over 12,000 years ago. A discovery trail dotted with information panels takes you round the lake.

Saint-Dié-des-Vosges Although much of Saint-Dié was destroyed by the Germans in November 1944, there are still many remnantsof the town’s remarkable religious past, including the 12C cathedral and its Gothic cloister .
