We are set to start next year with new playing strips that are ready to go, a couple of dollars in the bank, a large volume of summer sports gearing up to use the facilities over the summer and a new date of the 16th of November for the Glenfield Sevens and Tens. A Message from Our Chairman

Hi All,

As we come to the end of another very difficult season, I look back and realise that we have achieved a lot.

We are set to start next year withnew playing strips that are ready to go, a couple of dollars in the bank, a large volume of summer sports gearing up to use the facilities over the summerand a new date of the 16th of November for the Glenfield Sevens and Tens.Touch Rugby, Tag Football and Ultimate Frisbee all start after labour weekend so as you see it

doesn't just end with the 15 a-side game.

Most importantly however is the club AGM on the 15th of October. As many will have come to realise we have very limited numbers of people that areprepared to volunteer to keep your club running these days and of late the committees have copped some pretty unfair flack from a number of quarters and people that don't seem prepared to put their hands up to help. If you have time to criticise you may well have time to help. Please come along to the AGM and volunteer. It will help us to continue to build on the great work both Senior and Junior Club

committees have achieved over the past couple of years.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that we do have a number of our Senior Players in rep teams from ITM Cup right through the grades still playing and achieving great things.

Check out the website and get along and support the Glenfield players when ever you can.

Senior RugbyPREMIERS

Under a new and exciting coaching team pre-season looked really promising. Commitment, determination and building trust in each other saw the team come together as a group. The hard working coaches instilled beliefs and values that we would like all our teams to have at Glenfield Rugby. There were 12 Premier debutants. It was a disappointing season but we look forward to next season with most of the team expected to return.

PREMIER RESERVES

A mix of youth and experience saw this team go from bottom of the heap last year to scaring the pants off the top sides. Promoting many players to the Premiers throughout the season. This team had a fantastic team spirit & their commitment saw them do well. Thirteen wins this season and a finals day game at North Harbour Stadium.

SEVENS

New faces to join the club often come via 7’s and this year was no different. A large group of keen young men with plenty of speed and plenty to learn under their experienced coach. Expecting big things from this group this summer

GRIZZLIES

Another year older with what seems to be more players - some times too many. Whether playing or not always a supportive group of the club. Results always a 4 all draw but more often than not they were on the winning side of that draw.

WOMENSWith 8 new players and promotion to the top grade of   the   Auckland Women’s Rugby Competition,   our Glenfield Women's team   struggled on the field.   There were occasional wins but you cannot fault  the efforts and team spirit of Willie's team.

The women are currently training for the  Byron Bay 7's Tournament. They depart on the Thursday 17th October for the Gold Coast where they will be based, updates will be on our club Facebook page.

Junior RugbyFROM OUR JUNIOR CLUB CHAIRMAN

2013 has been a solid year for the junior players at Glenfield.

With 85 registered players playing in J2, J4, J6, J7 and J8 the season can be remembered for some very exciting games played against their North Harbour competitors. Our J7 team played in the Snow White Invitational tournament and performed very well. Our J4 team reached the second round of the J4 Representative competition. Congratulations to the players, coaches, managers and parents involved.

The Junior prize-giving was held on Saturday 21st September 2013.

Congratulations to all of the players, in particular the award recipients. A special mention to the J4 team who were awarded the ‘Team of the Year’ trophy and Doug Hadfield for his selection as Junior Coach of theYear.

5 Year Badges were awarded to Albie Fisher, Braeden Fisher, Sam Linstrom, Philemon Tuitahi and Jonathon Thornton .

The Junior Club has secured the support of some key sponsors for the 2013/2014 period. A

special thanks to the teams at Westfield Glenfield, Z Energy (North Shore) and Wardrobe

Works. This support has enabled all junior players to

receive a ‘Glenfield Club’ Hoodie and all teams will play in our completely new playing

uniform in 2014.

Looking forward, the Junior Club Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for 1st October at 6.30pm at the clubrooms. I encourage people who are interested in joining the committee or assisting as a volunteer to attend the meeting.

Finally, with the assistance of Mitre 10 Mega Glenfield we are participating with a float in the Glenfield Community Xmas Parade on 17th November and would appreciate any assistance and identification of anyone who would like to be involved – either behind the scenes or in the parade itself.

Please contact Shane Blackwell [email protected] or Donna Kahaki [email protected]

Thank you to all involved, who played or supported the junior club in 2013. We look forward to seeing you next season.

HARBOUR PHOTO SHOOT

At the 2013 Harbour ITM Cup Team photo shoot, Glenfield J6 player Ethan Kahaki was given the opportunity to model the new 2014 Glenfield Junior Rugby strip. What made it all the more special was he modeled it with Glenfield's only ITM representative Michael Little. The photos are being used to promote North Harbour’s ITM Cup team.

FROM OUR SUPPORTERS CLUBS SECRETARYRUGBY

Although our premier team results this year were not flash, it was disappointing that so few of our

“supporters” were at the senior games and the annual prize giving on 6th September which was

notified on the club website.

The Premier Reserves and the Grizzlies had strong seasons. The Premier Reserves narrowly

missing out on the top four and the Grizzlies after a slow start winning their last 13 games in a row. The Women's team have been fundraising for a trip to a sevens rugby tournament in Byron

Bay, New South Wales and did an excellent job of catering for the annual Grizzlies dinner. As usual

they enjoyed their football and the after match functions.

Unfortunately once again the Under 21 team floundered. With coach and manager in place it was a lack of commitment by players that led to their withdrawal. Keen to turn up on Saturday for something to do but not train during the

week. The resurrection of the Restricted side last year did not last. Lack of numbers forced the

withdrawal of this team also.

GOLF DAYAnother successful day with good weather.

Unfortunately a number of our regulars were not available but 45 players ensured a competitive outcome. The winners this year were the Bay

Maritime (Selwyn Maynard) team comprising of Graham Malins, Robbie Edwards, Phil Martin and David Lester, all ex-club players, with a best net of 51.25. We acknowledge the support of our

sponsors and their generosity:

GRIZZLIES TEAM TRIP

The annual trip this year was to Rotorua. The main activity is not a game of footie like it used to be. Nowadays its golf and this year they played at

Springfield for the GGTTT (Glenfield Grizzlies Touring Team Trophy) donated by Ted Wilson.

The winner this year (surprise, surprise) was old club member Richie Campbell. Richie is now

living in Rotorua.

The non-golfers went “luging”, trying to damage each other. A great weekend enjoyed by a number

of the aging - Grizzlies.

OBITUARIESCondolences to the families of:-

Pete Santo who passed away on the 16th July 2013 at North Shore Hospital. The Santo family

sons & daughter were involved in the club; the eldest Marty played for the Seniors.

Gary Cooksley who passed away on the 31st July 2013 on Pupuke Golf Course. The Cooksley

family have had a long involvement with the club notably with brother Ken & father Jack.

FUNCTIONSWhat a great year we have had at the Club!  The club has held in excess of 17 private functions since January including a wedding, several 21st’s and other birthday celebrations.

The wedding

We also hire out the clubrooms for other things - North Harbour Netball use our club rooms to hold meetings, North Harbour Touch held their Junior Prize-giving, Glenfield College has run driver training courses using the clubroom as a classroom and the parking area for driving.

Our teams have also used the club to hold team fundraisers.   Zumba was at the club on Wednesdays for a number of weeks.

I encourage the local schools to use our club for their school fundraisers and have built relationships with them this year which has resulted in bookings for next year.   It’s great to see our club being used in our community. The Glenfield Rugby Club has a history and reputation within the rugby community of being a ‘real family club’.   Everyone is welcome and it’s great to see so many children coming along to

watch their older siblings or parents playing rugby every Saturday.    These little ones will be the face of our club in years to come.

COMMITTEEGlenfield Rugby Union & Sports Club Inc has two committees a Junior Committee and the Senior Committee. Both Committees’ work tirelessly towards building a sustainable community - none of it’s members receive any financial gain, in other words they are not paid to do what they do.

I know personally I have spent hours this past season trying to sort out player registrations, field allocations and gear. I liaise with Auckland Council and North Harbour Rugby Union on a daily basis - ensuring you are kept informed with who is playing when and where, any cancellations, etc.

I keep Facebook and the Website up to date, not to mention photographing games when I can and making those photos available to you. I am also the editor of this newsletter but sadly because I have been concentrating on so many other areas of administration I haven’t managed to get one out this past season.

My job doesn’t finish just because the rugby season has, there is now Sevens Rugby, Ultimate Frisbee and Tag Football kicking off.

What I am trying to get at is we need you to come and help share the load - Committee meetings are held once a month and honestly your help is needed.

The more people involved the easier the task of building a more amazing community would be.

WEBSITE & FACEBOOK

Our club website and Facebook pages are continuously updated. The website homepage now includes the Glenfield Rugby Facebook feed - which means you don’t need a Facebook account to read the latest news and for the “live” scoring of our Premier games.

Statistics have now been added to the Premier team page. You can view player & game statistics over a number of years.

BUILDING A BIGGER BETTER COMMUNITY

Our committee has spent the last couple of years working towards building the “Sports Club” side of Glenfield Rugby Union & Sports Club Inc.

To do this we have reached out to other sports. Additional sport affiliations are beneficial to Glenfield Rugby Union & Sports Club Inc. They mean more numbers, more use of the clubrooms which creates income that helps towards paying for the upkeep of the facilities. It also means we have the opportunity to apply for a larger chunk of the funding pie - again more income.

We are extremely happy to introduce the first of those sports...

NETBALL

Northcote Netball became officially affiliated with the Glenfield Rugby Union & Sports Club in 2013.

They are a club that has been running for more than 20 years and like Glenfield Rugby Union & Sports Club they pride themselves in being fun and family orientated.

There players range in age from 18 to over 40 years and this past season they had 8 training and non-training teams, playing anywhere from Senior 1 to Senior 10 at Onewa Domain on Saturday afternoons.

TAG FOOTBALL

Tag Football is another of the new sports that will be associated with Glenfield Rugby & Sports Club Inc in 2014. It is a popular alternative outdoor recreational team sport that has competitions running throughout New Zealand. Eight players in each team are on the field at any one time. Players wear shorts with a Velcro patch on each side. A strip of cloth is attached to the Velcro, known as a tag. The object of the game is to score tries. Defenders prevent this by tagging the ball carrier, removing the tag from the shorts. Field dimensions are 70 metres x 50 metres. Two fields will fit on one rugby field. In Tag football the attacking team has six plays or tags to try and score a try or promote the ball down field as close to the line as possible. The game is exciting due to the fact of the tagging situation which can be difficult to remove. The invention of the tag also prevents phantom calls.

All skills are utilized in tag football including kicking. Passing becomes an attacking weapon, and if a player is put into a gap, there is a high probability they will make a clean break. When attacking the line, fancy moves such as around-the-corner passes work well, often making the defender stoop low to remove the tag.

The game is non-contact and the rules are designed to encourage this - you cannot as an attacker run straight at a defender, you must run at the gaps. A defender cannot impede the progress of an attacker, so if you try to get a tag and bump the attacker you may well be penalised. The rule is whoever initiates contact will be penalised.

The rules allow for the ball to go to ground with the advantage rule applying - this results in a lot of broken field play. Teams kick off to commence play and restart play after a try has been scored. Line drop-outs are taken from the centre of the try line. Kicking in general play is allowed but it must be below shoulder height of the referee.

Games are usually played over 40 minutes, two twenty minute halves. Times may be varied to suit age groups and conditions.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE

Ultimate Frisbee is another of the new sports to join us at Glenfield Rugby Union & Sports Club Inc, it is a fast paced and fun sport - a cross between Touch, Netball and American Football.  Teams of players try to advance a frisbee up the field by passing to each other (you can't run with the disc - like netball) and score by catching it in an end zone.  Like in Touch, an incomplete pass results in a turnover and opposition tries to score at the other end.  The sport is non-contact, so very safe and a unique aspect to it is that all games are completely self-refereed - even at the World Championship.

Two leagues will be run over the spring season (Labour Weekend through Christmas).• Competitive League  will run on Monday nights from 6.30pm.   7 players on the field

(recommended squad size 12-16), mixed gender (3 girls on at all times), standard Ultimate rules.

• Social League will run on Thursday nights from 6.30pm.  5 players on the field (recommended squad size of 10-12), mixed gender (2 girls on at all times), modified rules with increased substitutions.

Social League is the perfect opportunity to get into the game in a more relaxed atmosphere.  So get a club team together, or a work team, or just a group of mates and join in the fun.  Experienced players will be on hand to help you learn the rules and skills.
