Primary Newsletter 16 August 2016 FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY HRIS Athletics Congratulations to all our 70 students who participated in the HRIS Athletics Carnival last Friday. I was most pleased to hear that the behaviour, participation and sportsmanship of all were not to be faulted. There were some outstanding achievements by a number of competitors and I am sure these will be outlined by Mr O’Callaghan. Thank you very much to the parents who provided transport and the staff who attended on the day. P and F Meeting The next meeting of the P and F Primary Auxiliary will be held next Tuesday, 23 August, commencing at 6:30pm in the Primary Staffroom. Please come along and have input into this vital school organisation. In recent weeks we have taken delivery of five picnic tables provided by the P and F for the area outside the Year 1 and 2 rooms, providing wonderful outdoor work spaces and places for the children to eat their morning tea and lunch. The P and F have also donated money to buy more readers in the Infants area of the school. Thank you very much for the supply of these items. Book Week Activities A reminder that we will be holding various activities during Book week next week, 22-26 August. A Book fair will run all week, with a parade of book characters to be held on Thursday. We hope you are able to support both these events. Please see Library notices for details. 242 Moore Creek Road TAMWORTH NSW 2340 Telephone: 5776 5220 Facsimilie: 5776 5279 Email: [email protected] Website: www.calrossy.nsw.edu.au Love is kind and patient… 1 Corinthians 13:4 (CEV)

Lunchtime Activities During lunchtimes a number of activities are available to children. Chess club runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Gardening in the Vege Patch on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Maker Space on Monday and Friday, Coding Club on Tuesday and Thursday, Science activities on Monday, as well as the Library being open for students before school and at lunchtime each day. While we like to encourage children to be active and get out and play games and be engaged in some physical activity, these activities provided by staff, offer an alternative and interest base for children. Most activities are usually well attended. Weekly Inspiration Friends are those rare people who ask how we are and then wait to hear the answer.

QUALITY TEACHING AND LEARNING

“We are in a time when the nature of learning and roles of teachers and students are evolving to align with an information rich, globally connected world. The knowledge-centred schools of the past are shifting towards the creating centred schools of today.” (Monica Williams, Association Independent Schools).

Calrossy Anglican School is actively building its ability to engage students in their learning. We are putting students in the driver’s seat of their learning journey. This is changing the role of the teacher to that of a learning engineer who builds capabilities around 21st Century skills. We are creating a teaching and learning culture that deliberately prepares our students for their future. A new team has been established to lead this change and support students and teachers in the classroom. The Integration Technology Team consists of: Amber Chase, Lisa O’Callaghan and Dr Peter Fowler, led by Penny Small, the Coordinator of Quality Teaching and Learning at Calrossy Anglican School. The Team support deepening teachers’ and students’ understanding and use of technologies that promote cooperative problem solving and higher order thinking skills. One of the missions of the team is to provide more opportunities for the students on every campus to be actively involved in developing their technology skills.

At Calrossy Anglican School we provide mandatory digital technology classes in Years 7 and 8 where students learn to code, use robotics and learn how to be informed digital citizens. We also offer updated Information Technology Courses in Year 9 and 10 as electives. Our Primary students are also introduced to technology, including coding and circuitry, as early as Prep and Kindergarten. The importance of this is recognised in the Australian Curriculum:

‘Students develop capability when they apply knowledge and skills confidently, effectively and appropriately in complex and changing circumstances, both in their learning at school and in their lives outside school.’

On the first day of Term 3 all of our teachers were privileged to be part of a professional learning session run by Global Educator Lee Watanabe Crockett. Calrossy Anglican School brought Lee to Tamworth for the day to work with teachers from ours and other Tamworth and Hunter Valley schools to learn more about WHY we must reform and develop learning and teaching practices to prepare our students for their future. The Northern Daily Leader has produced an article on Lee's way of seeing the world.

http://www.northerndailyleader.com.au/story/4035840/advice-to-help-children-flourish/?cs=159

As a result of Lee’s visit and follow up work, students across the school are now exploring better ways to come up with relevant solutions to real problems they are investigating using the 6D’s. They are “Define, Discover, Dream, Design, Deliver and Debrief ”. There are STEM units (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) being created and taught in primary and secondary classes.

Please visit our website for more information on this, there is a page just for parents, that can be found via the intranet, or the content pages on “innovation and technology”. The direct address is https://techatcalrossy.wordpress.com

Each Tuesday at recess we will hold a ‘Tasty Treats’ stall. The money raised goes towards the Year 6 Celebration at the end of the year and other school resources. We ask that if possible students provide a selection of food to sell such as fruit, popcorn, small cakes, biscuits, slices or other healthy options. No toffees/lollies please. We also need to be aware of students with food allergies and particularly ask you to avoid nuts.
