The department’s 50th anniversary alumni conference and reunion which took place June 6–8 in Bloomington is over, but as an impulse that resonates within those who attended, and is produc- ing, we hope, positive vibrations through- out the Indiana University folklore and ethnomusicology community, it lives on as a testament to the vitality of our fields of study and those who practice them. Good words: We had lots of these in Bloomington for the conference. They were present in slightly formal attire, in the excellent talks delivered by the invited speakers, and less formally, in the exchanges that filled the physical and temporal interstices of the conference. Coming from a range of perspectives, and drawing on a variety of case studies, the speakers manifested the real achievements and fresh promise of our research agendas. While the gist of the conference cannot be caught in a simple phrase, I did note a recurring theme about the silencing and voicing of stories, and our role as players in this process. Things: These too were present, as icons illustrating the talks and also as a stark presence in the form of a cluster of Warren Roberts’s old-time tools. The precise uses of these crusty metal and wood objects remain obscure to all but the enlightened — one of them would require Roberts himself to reveal its true identity — but they all speak to a time when people around these parts could survive by the skill of their hands. And music, sweet music: We sampled many sounds in the talks, and live music kept asserting itself in the idioms of bluegrass, blues, world fusion jazz, Andean folk, and even a touch of the Mexican corrido. We were blessed to keep company with Barbara Roberts, Dorothy Leitsinger — Keynote speaker Martha Norkunas, head of the oral and public history program at the University of Texas in Austin, launched the conference with a talk on public folklore, history, and the politics of representation. Bruno Nettl, professor emeritus of music and anthropology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, was a keynote speaker at the department’s 50th anniversary alumni conference. Stith Thompson’s eldest daughter — and Bruno Nettl, all of whom were present in the early 1950s when Thompson coached Roberts to his degree. At the business meeting on Sunday morning, Ruth Stone and I reported on the very positive external review of the department that has just concluded, and there was a useful exchange of ideas leading to the formation of an alumni steering committee. No doubt by the time this issue of Traditions falls into your hands, you will have heard from these energetic folks and some good projects will be in the works. It is my good fortune to conclude my term as chair of the department on this upbeat note. We have covered some ground over the last four years, morphing into a department with two institutes; adding faculty, assistantships, and support staff; reviewing and revising our curricu- lum; and laying the groundwork for a public arts and culture component. Departmental news

From the chair

The Department of Folklore andEthnomusicology is at a beginning in a

number of ways. It’s the beginning of theterm for a new chair, the start of a newfiscal year, and the initial year following anexternal review.

I’m enthusiastic about the chance towork with thefaculty, staff, andstudents tostrengthen theinfrastructure thatmakes up thisunique configura-tion of intellectualinquiry at IndianaUniversity. Thereare a number ofpoints that I’ll bekeeping in the

forefront as we work together during thenext several years.

First, ethnomusicology and folklore as asingle unit forms a valuable, energizing, andmutually beneficial conjunction of intellec-tual foci. We’ll be moving beyond ourinitial test of the two separate institutesexisting within the larger department. Theoutside reviewers endorsed our view thatthe structure works well, and they sup-ported continuing and building upon thisarrangement in the future.

Second, the fundamental values of bothfolklore and ethnomusicology will remaindominant as we plan for the future. Wehave always stressed a solid concern withunderlying theory and rigorous ethnogra-phy. The interest in and concern with thesefundamentals remains a focus for theacademy, whether we are addressing oralnarrative or applied ethnomusicology.

Third, in the 21st century we will beadapting to new forms and practices thatwill command our attention. For example,we now have multiple courses that we offeron film and video as related to folklore andethnomusicology. One very popular courseis Music in the Films of Spike Lee.

Fourth, the Department of Folklore andEthnomusicology at Indiana University isincreasingly working with applied folkloreand ethnomusicology, whether it occurs inthe public or the private sector. We areteaching such courses as Public SectorEthnomusicology, in which studentsconsider in some detail issues and processes

New chair outlines plans for department’s futureof working with museums, films, orfestivals. We also have a burgeoningTraditional Arts Indiana program with apublic folklorist in residence who partici-pates actively in the life of the department.One of the special roles for the departmentis the opportunity to reflect upon and toanalyze public sector work in ways that canbe mutually beneficial to academic instruc-tion as well as everyday world practice.

Fifth, Indiana University is a leader incutting-edge computer technology, and wehave the chance to harness developments inthis area for teaching and research in ourfield. In our laboratory known as SAVAIL— as well as through our various projectssuch as the Mellon Foundation fundedEVIADA project to make field videotapesof music accessible via Internet2 — we havethe opportunity to capitalize on technology

to conduct research, teach, and present ourmaterials. I will be encouraging faculty,students, staff, and alumni to work togetheron projects that take advantage of theresources at our disposal.

I have always believed that folklore andethnomusicology need, where it is at allpossible, to become strongly establishedwithin institutions. Institutionalization willensure a long-term future for these areas inthe academy.

I am committed to continuing my worktoward that future and to sharing that workwith Richard Bauman, the new director ofthe Folklore Institute and the next chair ofthe department when my term concludes.Please feel free to contact me [email protected] if you have ideas orwant to discuss these goals in further detail.

New directions inspire optimismMany years ago, in a conversation

with one of my graduate schoolmentors concerning the state ofacademe, I blithely professed to being anoptimist. “Well, Dick, I am too,” hesaid, “but you know, these are hardtimes for optimists.”

This sage observation has come backto me with some frequency during thepast several months, as I have contem-plated taking up the directorship of theFolklore Institute. If those times, 40years ago, were hard, then these are even

harder, especially at Big State U. So, youmight ask, why do I feel that this is a goodtime to become engaged once again in theadministration of the Department ofFolklore and Ethnomusicology? I’ll cite justa few of the reasons.

One important factor is that we havebeen deeply engaged for the past couple ofyears in an intensely reflexive period of self-examination, working hard to define andarticulate our intellectual and institutionalcharter. As a necessary part of the process oftransforming ourselves from the FolkloreInstitute to the Department of Folklore andEthnomusicology, undergoing an externalreview, and responding to administrativeinitiatives (some of which — to the surpriseof jaded veterans like me — actually seemto be going somewhere), we have arrived ata much more coherent understanding ofwhat we share intellectually, how we mightbest serve the needs of our students, and

what our place might be in the university.The partnership with ethnomusicology,

in my view, has had an enormouslyinvigorating effect on the department.Team-teaching the Colloquy in Folklore andEthnomusicology (a new course for first-year graduate students to explore why webelong together) with Sue Tuohy has beenone of the most rewarding pedagogicalexperiences of my career. But the curricu-lum is undergoing a productive refigurationmore generally.

Whereas both folklore and ethnomusi-cology, in their formative periods of fieldsof study, emphasized a range of social,historical, and technological discontinuities(as between oral and written, folk andurban, vernacular and cosmopolitan, localand national or global, traditional andcreative, unofficial and official, etc.), manyof us now find it more interesting andproductive to explore the continuities thattranscend those former “Great Divides” andthe historical processes that led to theirformulation and promulgation.

Our initiatives thus far to enhance theprofessional opportunities for our studentshave generated considerable enthusiasm,both within the department and in alliancewith other institutional partners. The dualMA program with the School of Libraryand Information Science has alreadyattracted much more student interest thanwe anticipated; the proposed dual MA withthe School of Journalism has alreadyprompted enthusiastic queries fromprospective students; and the departmentalinitiative in Public Arts and Culture haselicited gratifying support from theadministration. And these are just thebeginning.

Intellectually and institutionally, then,there are some grounds for optimism. Ilook forward to working with Ruth Stoneover the next several years in solidifying thegains we have made and in helping to setthe department on a firm course for thefuture.

At the 50th anniversary reunion inBloomington, June 6–8, several of us

became interested in exploring the develop-ment of an alumni association for those ofus who would like to keep in touch witheach other and with the Department ofFolklore and Ethnomusicology.

Even among those fortunate enough tobe working in our chosen fields, few of ushave the luxury of working with otherfolklorists and ethnomusicologists. Havingmore active contact among us could helpthe department provide more services foralumni, permit the alumni to help thedepartment, and serve as a means for us tohelp each other.

The members of a newly created alumnisteering committee are asking you to helpus generate ideas for ways in which alumniand the department can help each other.Some of the suggestions already made areas follows:

• Setting up a listserv for discussionamong alumni

• Making the films and videos in thedepartment’s Folklore on Videocollection available to alumni

• Creating a visiting professorship at IU,enabling us to bring back to thedepartment the expertise we havegained since leaving, and enabling usto work for a while in closer contactwithother folklorists (and, perhaps,bringing greater prestige to folklore atour home institutions)

• Helping the department with fund

raising, to ensure that the IUFoundation’s efforts actually work forthe Department of Folklore andEthnomusicology

• Creating a traveling lecturer program,similar to the one run by Phi BetaKappa, which each year sends selectedscholars to campuses around thecountry

• Creating some form of supportservices for independent scholars

various archives we have individuallyestablished

• Building a Web site with informationabout resources, news of alumni(including projects of interest), lists ofcurrent theses and dissertations, andcalls for papers for panels at AFS andother meetings

Do any of these ideas appeal to you?Would you care to elaborate on any ofthem? Do you have other suggestions?

To implement these ideas and developothers, it might benefit us to have someform of alumni association. Would you beinterested in an alumni association and, if so,what form should it take? To begin with,we’re simply using this alumni list, butshould we try to set up a listserv or someother electronic forum? Should we aim tohold our own meeting at AFS and SEMconferences? Would we want a newsletter(print or electronic) that goes beyond thedepartment’s Traditions? How informal orformal would you want this to be?

We recognize that alumni of the various

incarnations of the Department of Folkloreand Ethnomusicology have widely varyingattitudes toward their alma mater. Whateveryour own attitude toward the department,IU, or alumni associations in general, wenonetheless hope that you will join us intrying to establish ways in which thedepartment can better serve its formerstudents, and in which together we canimprove the study of folklore andethnomusicology.

At this point, we need to learn whatwould be most useful to you and what ideasyou’d like to offer. Please send us your ideasand preferences by writing to one of us (notthe entire list) by e-mail or post. We willcompile and share your comments.

Blasts from the past: 50 years of alumni folkloreAs folklorists and ethnomusicologists,

we spend most of our fieldwork timein the “ethnographer’s chair,” collectingtales, songs, jokes, and other lore from ourinformants. At this year’s 50th anniversarycelebration of the first doctoral degree infolklore at Indiana University, titled “Wordsand Things and Music,” we decided to turnthe tables — and the microphones — in theother direction.

Interviewing dozens of Department ofFolklore and Ethnomusicology alumni, wegathered their best, worst, and mosthumorous memories of their time at IU,from panicking over qualifying exams toskinny-dipping in Griffy Lake. Here aresome of the highlights:

‘THE TERROR THAT COMES IN

THE NIGHT’: THE PHD EXAMS

Like any rite of passage, the doctoral examhas inspired a wide range of customs andpractices among our alumni. For example,one particularly nervous student brought inpictures of his wife and kids and placedthem next to his blue book for good luck.

Another alumna, Jean Freedman,PhD’95, prepared for her exams by readingevery single word of the Journal of AmericanFolklore, from the very first issue to the mostrecent. Harry Berger, PhD’95, a memberof that same cohort, confirmed: “It was avery nervous group. Everybody was veryflipped out.” Their group was not alone,however. Nancy McEntire, PhD’90,commented that exam time “was whensome of the worst behaviors came out.” Forexample, she recalls sitting down to writeexams, when one of her colleagues pulledout a kitchen timer and placed it on thetable in front of him to ensure that hewould spend exactly 45 minutes on eachquestion. “So he ... set it for 45 minutesand it started going ‘tick-tick-tick.’ We werealready completely freaking out, and thenhere was this stupid kitchen alarm clock. …And he just looked at his clock and startedwriting. So I just reached over and grabbedit, turned it off, and stuffed it into mybackpack. I just took my exam ... likenothing had happened, and he was somortified by my action, he didn’t sayanother word about it. Finally, after theexam, I gave him his clock back and I said,‘Don’t ever do that again!’”

Our alumni were not the only onesaffected by the department exam process.Katie Borland, PhD’94, recalled that herroommate, after living with her for thesemester and watching her study for exams,dropped out of graduate school. Anotheralumna said that the night before quals, she

was standing in the shower calling out allthe significant points of a Dorson article.Her roommate also quit graduate schoolthe next day. Coincidence? We think not.

On the other hand, some students wereperhaps a bit too confident. One alumnusrecalled a fellow student who had justfinished his quals, but was still waiting tofind out how he did — always a stressfultime, especially if you saw one of yourprofessors on campus. This student

happened to run into Professor LindaDégh, who peered up at him and said,“Well, how did it go?” Trying to play itcool, the student replied in a faux-Frenchaccent, “Oh, you know, it’s just a rite-de-passage.” Without missing a beat, ProfessorDégh replied, “We all know about the rite... we shall see about the passage!”

Some alumni even insisted that theyreally enjoyed the process of studying for

Hanna Griff, PhD’94, wentso far as to say that one of her favoritememories of IU graduate school waspreparing for her master’s degree exam.“When I was a student back in the mid ’80sto early ’90s, students had the option oftaking an exam or writing a thesis. I optedfor the exam, and those of us who wereready at the time formed a study group. Iliked this time because it was a great way oforganizing and synthesizing the past fewyears of classes and material.”

The group also concocted some tastyincentives to study by cooking each otherelaborate dishes, such as Indian fry bread,lamb stews with mint, and Thai soups.

“I believe we all passed that exam,” Griffsaid of her epicurean study group.

Since we cannot possibly cover everyalumnus’s exam experience here, Bergeroffers a useful tip: In the reserve room,where generations of folklorists haveprepared for exams, there’s a copy ofRichard Dorson’s The British Folkloriststhat’s covered with hundreds of layers ofmargin notes. “If someone wants tounderstand the history of [folklore]graduate students preparing for exams,” hesaid, “they should just study the marginaliaof Dorson’s book.”

PARTIES, ROASTS, AND OTHER

FOLKLORE FESTIVITIES

Not all of our alumni’s time was spentcracking the books in the folklore collectionor transcribing fieldwork notes. Some oftheir fondest memories took place outsidethe classroom — at parties, pig roasts, localhangouts, the “Folklore House,” andskinny-dipping jaunts to Griffy Lake. Manyof our informants agreed that the ’70s werethe best time to be at IU. As folklorealumnus Steve Siporin, PhD’82, puts it,“It was 1974, but it was still the ’60s.”

Over the years, some of the favorite localhangouts have included the RuncibleSpoon, the Red Chair Bakery, the Choco-late Moose, and an old Victorian-stylebuilding that became known as the“Folklore House” (on the corner of WestFourth Street and Rogers Street). “Thereason why the house was important isbecause it was a great party house,” recallsformer resident Katie Borland of the large,rundown, two-story home. A bunch ofethno students who did African drummingwould play at their “frequent parties,”where they indulged in elaborate,multicultural feasts. One former occupantrationalized that the parties were “puttingfolklore theory into practice, creatingexpressive culture.”

The end-of-year folklore parties have alsoprovided some stress relief over the years,along with some surprising performancesfrom both faculty and students. Alumnimemories include the faculty and staff line-dancing one year; a student commemora-tion of Richard Bauman called “Texodus,”which was an enactment of one of ProfessorBauman’s first articles on acid-dropping,psychedelic subculture; and the “FolkloreShuffle,” in which each faculty and staffmember performed a rap-style poem aboutthemselves in a kind of “reverse roast.”

Speaking of roasts, the porcine kind werealso once a popular tradition at the IUFolklore Institute. Back in the Dorsonyears, the department held annual pigroasts, during which students, faculty, andstaff would gather to talk, sing, and createimpromptu music while feasting on theguest — or guests — of honor (they wouldalso roast half a steer and a lamb so thatMuslim and Jewish students could join inthe fun).

“The pig roast in 1975 is what I recall,”Siporin said. “I think that was the third orfourth of the ‘first series.’ A grad studentnamed Gerald Cashion, PhD’84, had ahouse and some land somewhere south of

Bloomington, and that’s where we hadthem. It was really big — well over 100people, maybe 200. It went from Saturdayafternoon through Sunday morning, afterclasses ended in May, and a lot of peoplecamped out there.”

Other elements of the pig roasts included“lots of beer,” a pancake breakfast onSunday morning, and a “Pig Roast” songperformed by a student rock ’n’ roll band.

STORIES OF THE SUPERNATURAL

No folklore department would be completewithout its own repertoire of ghost storiesand urban legends. One of the mostpopular seems to be sightings of legendaryprofessor Richard Dorson.

Nancy McEntire recalled that in thespring of 1982 she was sitting in thefolklore office talking with secretary SydGrant, some six months after Dorson haddied. As she was glancing out the window,she clearly saw Dorson’s figure — “his gait,his stance, the clothing he wore” — passthrough the courtyard. After letting out aterrifying scream, she and Grant rushedoutside. But nobody (at least from the

material world) was there. Around thissame time, the folklore secretaries claimedthey would often come into the office in themornings to find the upstairs faucets turnedon full blast. Perhaps we could blame thaton the building’s ancient pipes, but manybelieve it was Dorson.

“Definitely his presence was there,”McEntire said. Several sightings ofDorson’s ghost in the folklore archives werereported, as well as one of him beingchauffeured around Boise, Idaho, in a blackCadillac a few days after his death.

Another case of the supernatural tookplace in the ethnomusicology archives inMaxwell Hall. For years, ethnomusicologystudents working in the archives werehaunted by what became known as “TheScream.” While recording a tape alone inthe labs one afternoon, one student feltsomething suddenly grab her leg fromunderneath the table.

“I let out a scream that I didn’t think ahuman being was even capable of,” shesaid, “and of course it was recorded ontothe tape.” OK, the culprit turned out to becolleague Bruce Conforth, PhD’90, whospliced the tape and would play it randomlyto innocent ethnoid victims over the nextfew years.

Supernatural tricks also followed ourstudents into the classroom, such as in “TheCase of the Disappearing Paradigm.”During her second year in graduate school,Betty Belanus, PhD’89, attended an earlymorning Children’s Folklore class taught byJohn McDowell.

“John was fond of writing out complextheoretical models on the blackboard,which we would all dutifully copy down asfast as we could,” she recalled. “One day, hewas engaged in writing and explaining oneof these models when we noticed [that]almost as fast as he could write, the modelwas disappearing before our eyes!” Thestudents thought some ghostly presencewas trying to warn Professor McDowellagainst forcing such difficult paradigms onthem so early in the morning. “In truth,”Belanus confessed, “one of the janitors hadwashed the blackboard with something thatmade the chalk fade in a matter of seconds.”But, then again, who knows what otherforces may have been at work?

THE STITH THOMPSON HEIST

One of the most memorable legendscirculating among alumni was the rescue ofthe Stith Thompson bust, which nowhappily resides at 501 N. Park Ave., alsoknown as the “Stith Thompson House” inhis honor. For many years, a bust of

Thompson was displayed near the Englishdepartment in Ballantine Hall, thoughmany folklore students felt its rightful placewas in their department. Alumnus JimLeary, PhD’78, recalled that one day thebust simply disappeared from BallantineHall.

“A phone call was placed to the campuspaper,” he said, “and a source identifyinghim- or herself only as ‘Deep Motif ’ statedthat the bust had been liberated and couldbe found somewhere in the precincts of thefolklore department.” The next time Learywent into the folklore archives, he foundthe bust of Thompson over the mantel witha little note attached at the base that read,“Free at last, free at last. Thank GodAlmighty, I’m free at last.”

Upon further investigation, the Traditionsstaff uncovered the wacky details of thisinfamous heist.

Referring to themselves as the FLA (or“Folklore Liberation Army”), a group ofgraduate students — including RichardMarch, PhD’83; Tom Carter, PhD’84; andSteve Becker, MA’76 — hatched a plan torestore Thompson’s bust to its properhome.

“Because Steve and I both worked parttime at the IU [Art] Museum,” Marchconfessed, they decided to “borrow a handtruck from the workshop there and use it tomove the bust. … We [wore] matchingkhaki work clothes like the maintenancestaff people tended to wear then.” They alsograbbed a university work order form andmade convincing comments to each other,such as, “Well, let’s get that thing loadedup,” and, “Yep, take it and get it cleanedup.” While the duo was quite nervous, their

plan worked.“Although people were in the office

nearby,” March recalled, “no one paid anyattention to us.” After a few unexpectedsurprises, such as the incredible weight ofthe bust, they managed to maneuver itacross campus to the folklore department.“As we approached, a cheer went up from agaggle of folklore grad students,” Marchrecalled. “The word had gotten around thatwe were going to do this.”

Despite this “concrete” evidence,however, some still prefer to believe thatsupernatural forces transported theThompson statue back to the FolkloreInstitute. Professor John McDowell, forinstance, explains that in Latin America it’sa well-known phenomenon that icons suchas the Virgin Mary have spiritual powers oftheir own and, when moved, will alwaystravel back to where they want to be.

“The bust of Stith Thompson wants tobe with us, in Folklore,” McDowell said.Sometime last year, the bust mysteriouslydonned one of the institute’s famousClaude Levi-Strauss T-shirts. We have yet tofind an ethnographic source to confirm thissupernatural phenomenon, but our researchcontinues.

UNDERGRADUATE EXCUSES,CHEATING, AND OTHER AI LORE

Serving as an associate instructor comeswith its own set of folklore — broken alarmclocks, the sudden death of grandparents,suspiciously familiar papers, scriptedfieldwork interviews, and much more. Hereare a few humorous AI tales from our

folklore and ethnomusicology alumni:One year, several graduate students —

Jennifer Schaker-Mill, PhD’99; JanelleWalker, PhD’00; and another AI — wereteaching F101 with John Johnson. Theywere sitting around one afternoon gradingfieldwork projects, when one of them said,“Wow! This is a great project!” Aftersharing the content of this fabulous project,another said, “Wait ... I have one of those,too.” And, yes, the third AI also had theexact same project in her pile. Johnsonarranged for a “hearing,” in which he calledeach student into his office one at a time.“The students were very nervous and theyall confessed,” one of the AIs recalled,“because John Johnson played it up andsaid, ‘You have the right to appeal’ and suchand such.” If nothing else, the studentsshould have been expelled for poor cheatingskills.

Every AI has faced the problem of therumored “paper files” kept by fraternitiesand sororities on campus. Katie Borlandremembered getting a call from an “official”secretary of a fraternity regarding a studentwho was failing a folklore course. Thestudent had completely stopped doing thework, and turned in a paper with a differentprofessor’s name on it than the one whowas teaching the class. Still, the secretarycontinued to make a case for allowing thestudent to pass the course.

Another alumnus recalled listening to astudent’s tape, which was supposed to be acollection of his family’s camping rituals.The tape included an interview with thestudent’s mother — except the voicesounded like that of an 18-year-old. Theprofessor queried the student, whoexplained that he didn’t have a tape recorderat the time of the interview, so he wrotedown the “script” and had somebody elsespeak it into the recorder later on. Thestudent insisted that was what the motheractually said (an interesting case for theHuman Subjects Committee …).

Anyone who’s been an AI might also befamiliar with the rash of spelling errors,grammatical mistakes, and otherwisehumorous elements found in studentpapers. Judith Neulander, PhD’01, andJean Freedman, PhD’95, decided to createa little collection project of their own out ofthese student bloopers. “At the end of eachsemester,” Neulander explained, “we sharedthe best malapropos and spelling errors. …If nothing else, they never lacked forcreativity!” Some of their best included apaper on “a formerly unknown folklorist,Jan Brunvard”; another on “The Evil Satin”(“Perhaps a little-known demon of shiny

fabric?” Neulander quipped.); and adiscussion of Arthurian legend, in whichWilliam the “canquor” apparently sat onthe “thorn” of England (a solid argumentagainst the benefits of the spellcheck tool).

THE PROFESSORS

Every alumnus has their fond, sentimental,humorous — and sometimes terrifying —recollections of their folklore andethnomusicology professors at IU. Follow-ing is a sampling of the memories, com-ments, and stories we collected. We’ll beginwith the inspiration for this year’s alumnigathering, Warren Roberts.

Alumna Nancy McEntire shared aninterest in tombstones with Roberts, whowould often call her up and ask if shewanted to go look at graveyards. “Nothingfazed him,” she recalled. “He would dofieldwork day after day after day if hecould.” She added, “He was such a greatguy because he really loved fieldwork. Heused to take four or five students with himon trips, and sing Gilbert and Sullivan[songs] the whole way!”

Peter Harle, PhD’03, remembersRoberts as “such an amazing person.” Herecounted a trip in 1993 that he took withRoberts, Suzanne Waldenberger, PhD’02,and Greg Schrempp, to check out somelog barns in southern Indiana. “Warren wasclambering up huge bales of hay in order toget a closer look at these 2- to 3-foot-thicktree trunks,” Harle said. Even thoughRoberts was nearly 70 years old at the time,“he outpaced everyone there as hescrambled from place to place, observing allsorts of easily missed details.”

McEntire also said that Roberts liked totell the story about a time he went down to

St. Meinrad’s, a monastery in southernIndiana. They were baking some really nicebread and he decided to buy a loaf. Hecouldn’t find anyone at the front door, sohe went to the back and knocked on thekitchen door. A cook came out, thoughtRoberts was a beggar, and gave him a loafof bread, saying, “Here you are, my dearman!” Roberts tried to give them somemoney, but they wouldn’t take it. “He usedto tell that story on himself and just laugh,”McEntire said.

Another classic story Roberts used to telltook place when he was a graduate studenthere at IU and drove an old, dilapidated carthat barely ran. First, the steering wheelcould turn only to the right, so he had todevise routes around Bloomington makingonly right-hand turns. One night he wasout with his future wife, Barbara, and theheadlights stopped working, too. SoRoberts got out on the hood of the carwith a flashlight, and told Barbara to drivevery carefully.

Professor Richard Dorson has alsomade, shall we say, a strong impression onthe minds of many alumni. PhilipNusbaum, PhD’82, commended Dorsonfor his collegial approach and for alwaysgiving him “the benefit of the doubtregarding the worthiness of the subjectmatter” of his dissertation. But he confessedto one experience of “the kind of Vesuvius-style eruption that Dorson’s 1950s studentstalk about,” which had to do with a matterof spelling.

“In my dissertation, I used the word‘occurrence’ a lot,” Nusbaum said. “Thedrafts of the chapters Dorson was reviewinghad it spelled ‘occurrance,’ and he pointed

out the misspelling to me.” Feeling ratherconfident, Nusbaum dared to raise thequestion, “Did you look it up?” Suffice it tosay that his query was “just audaciousenough to awaken the Dorson [that] us1970s students had only heard about. ... AllI can say is that I got out of there alive, andlived to dissertate another day.”

McEntire recalled a bit more favorableinteraction with Dorson. The year shestarted the program, 1979, there were a lotof “ethnoids” in her cohort, which Dorsonfound “a bit upsetting.” On the first day ofclass, Dorson asked all of theethnomusicologists to raise their hands,skeptically peered around the room, andrested his eyes on McEntire, one of 15ethnos that year. He asked her, “IsBeethoven folk?” and she promptly replied,“Yes, he is.” He said that was a goodanswer; McEntire sighed with relief,although she still confides that “he wasterrifying.”

Dorson was also renowned for his loveof socializing, however. Frank Hoffmannremembered him bursting in the front doorof a party singing “Barbara Allen” at thetop of his lungs — “and he had no singingvoice,” Hoffman said. But Hoffmannremembered that Dorson would always “tryto do things like that. He would try to relaxand get in the spirit of things.”

Another story attests to Dorson’spowerful presence, even after death.Yildiray Erdener, PhD’87, recalled, “Oneday, Alice Morrison and I were walkingtowards the Student’s Union. We saw Dr.Oinas in front of Ballantine Hall. Helooked very upset and said that he wascoming from the hospital and Dorson died.We were of course sad to hear that. Then hetold us that he visited Dorson almost everyday at the hospital and talked to him.Although Dorson was in a coma, Oinas wassure that people in a coma can hear butcannot respond. On that particular daywhen Oinas was in Dorson’s room and wastalking to him, a nurse told Oinas thatDorson had died a couple of hours ago, butthey didn’t move him yet out of his room.”

One of Hoffman’s favorite stories abouta professor was the time he asked StithThompson about the requirements to beaccepted into the folklore program. With anabsolutely straight face, Thompson replied,“Well now, you need a background in oneof the major areas — English or history orsomething like that. … Then you shouldhave a basic knowledge of anthropology, ofmusic. You need a Scandinavian language,at least one of them …” and so on.Hoffman admits he was completely fooledand “didn’t even think to look any further

into folklore” at that time. Luckily, hediscovered Thompson’s knack for “dead-pan pulling somebody’s legs,” and laterreturned to the Folklore Institute tocomplete his doctorate.

Finally, while professors might have usbelieve their job never offers a moment’srest, it’s not always as strenuous as theymake it seem. According to several alumni,Archer Taylor, Thompson, and Dorson allmade a habit of taking midday naps in theiroffices. “Taylor used to go next door toroom 40 (the office) and put his head onthe desk for a nap each afternoon afterlunch,” said Jan Brunvand, PhD’61. “Oneday, Dorson sat down and put his headdown at the same time, and Ellen Stekert,PhD’61, took a picture, which Dorson saidshould be titled ‘The Folklorists’ Progress.’”

LOVE CONNECTIONS

The folklore and ethnomusicology depart-ment has inspired not only many greatminds over the years, but also some hearts.We’re happy to report that quite a few ofour alumni have come away from IU withmore than just a degree. Harry Bergerrecalls running into Giovanna Del Negro(now his wife) in the main library, wherethey started chatting about their upcoming

quals.“We didn’t really know each other before

that,” Berger said. “And we started study-ing, and it became like eight hours a day!”They dutifully waited until after they passedtheir exams to start dating, and weremarried a year or two later.

Folklore alumni Jennifer Livesay,PhD’98, and Ken Pimple, PhD’91, arecelebrating their 10th wedding anniversarythis year. They met as graduate students inthe department in 1986 and got married alucky seven years later. They are currentlyliving in Bloomington, happily raising theirtwo children, while Pimple serves as adirector at the Poynter Center for the Studyof Ethics and American Institutions at IU.

Another department love connection isbetween ethnomusicologist John Fenn andfolklorist Lisa Gilman, PhD’01, who weremarried in 1999 and are now enjoying lifein College Station, Texas, with their 1-year-old daughter, Anika Lena Fenn Gilman.The couple met in 1996, when Lisa was theeditor of Folklore Forum and Trickster Press;Fenn, an incoming student that year,volunteered to help out with the publica-tions. “I needed somebody who knewPageMaker, and John is quite the computerwiz,” Gilman said, “and the rest is history.”

Adam W. Herbert, a 24-year veteran ofhigher education in Florida, became

the 17th president of Indiana University onAug. 1.

The university trustees unanimouslyapproved Herbert’s appointment in aspecial meeting at the Musical Arts Centerat IU Bloomington on June 5.

Adam Herbert takes office as IU’s 17th presidentHerbert, 59, is

the first AfricanAmerican to headthe university andthe only blackpresident in the BigTen. He came to IUfrom the Universityof North Florida inJacksonville, wherehe was Regents

Professor and executive director of theFlorida Center for Public Policy and

Leadership. From 1998 to 2001, he waschancellor of the state university system ofFlorida, overseeing 10 universities with250,000 students and a $5 billion budget.

Herbert, a native of Oklahoma, earned abachelor’s degree in political science in1966 and a master’s in public administra-tion in 1967 from the University ofSouthern California. He earned his PhD inurban affairs and public administrationfrom the University of Pittsburgh in 1971.
