From the Pastor
Greetings to each of you
Alleluia! Christ is risen. Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia!
We are now well into the season of Easter and life has taken on a very different routine
for many people as we experience the COVID-19 Global Pandemic. How are you doing?
These are difficult and challenging times. I hope and pray each of you is taking everything
step by step, day by day with God guiding you through! It is difficult to live within the
unknown and wait for this to be under control and yet we all play an important part within
how this unfolds. It is important for each of us to do our part in what we have been asked
by health professionals. We are showing Christ’s love for our neighbours when we are
implementing these protocols with in our daily life.
I invite you to pray for each other: for faith communities, for our government leaders,
for those who are first responders, frontline workers, medical providers, for those who still
work to meet our needs in places like grocery stores, the transportation industry and the
trucking industry, for those who are most vulnerable, for those who are ill along with their
families and friends, and for those who are alone or afraid.
I have talked with many people and it seems that the most difficult part of this Covid-19
Global Pandemic with the physical distancing and appeal to people to stay home unless
they are part of essential services, is the isolation people may experience as a direct result.
So many of you have expressed to me that you miss seeing and talking with your family,
friends, and your St. Ansgar family! We are social beings and I have seen how important
gathering for worship and also the fellowship time before and after a Worship Service is for
people at St. Ansgar. I also find that it warms my heart when I see the sharing of the Peace
of Christ during worship services. Time is taken for everyone to reach out to those who are
present to be lovingly acknowledged!
P A G E 2 F A M I L Y D O I N G S M A R - J U N 2 0 2 0
It would seem that St Ansgar is reaching out to people well beyond what we would have
imagined 2 months ago! This has been very evident within everyone’s quick and loving
response to reach out to help people within the needs that have recently been anticipated and
also needs which have been shared with us along the way the past month and a half. It is not
perfect as only God is perfect, we are learning along the way and adjusting things as we are
able, and yet, I believe it is Christ’s love working within people that is guiding us in this new
context!
My hope is that we respond to the real needs of people near and far as we are able, and in a
way that is helpful, as we all journey through this unpresidented time!
God bless each of you with strength, wisdom, love, creativity, faith and hope as you each
serve as the hands and feet of Christ in the world!

Comments from your Treasurer: We are grateful for our governments support extended to charitable and non-profit
organizations with the 10% Wage Subsidy program. St. Ansgar has taken advantage of this subsidy and this has contributed to an offset of $987.80 for April 2020. As we continue to be faced with the economic impact of this pandemic, we have been
cutting overhead expenses where we can. External revenue has been impacted with a reduction in the number of our parking lot spaces being rented. Also a few of our
Fellowship Hall renters have asked for rental reductions during this time. March 2020 saw a drop in Revenue of 20% in comparison to last year.
Our St. Ansgar website presence is regularly updated with our on-going programs, refer-
ence items and the link to our on-line 10:30 am Sunday Worship Service. We hope you will take the time to explore it and consider joining in any number of our programs. With worship services being held online during this crisis, donating your offerings on our website is easily done through Canada Helps and very shortly Interact E-transfer
auto deposit. Cheques mailed directly to the church are always welcome along with joining our PAR program. We very much appreciate your support during these
challenging times. TREASURER'S REPORT - Jayne Wagner reporting for March 2020 results.

Sunday Live Virtual Worship Service
The preparation of the Live Virtual Worship Service lovingly brought to you to experience
each Sunday morning has many important parts. We are grateful to Mark for stepping forward
to initiate and usher us into the use of technology to gather together for Live Virtual Worship
each Sunday in this time of physical isolation.
The Order of Service is prepared by Pastor Pamela with a children’s message, sermon,
hymn titles, prayers, pictures, and video (if that is used) etc.. Pastor Pamela starts with a
service theme and weaves the parts together which are based on a combination of the
Principal Festival, Season of the church year, the scripture texts for that Sunday, what is
happening within the congregation and also the world around us. Our present Covid-19
Global Pandemic, social distancing, context is part of the reality we each are living within.
Within the Sermon, liturgy and prayers, there is a need to acknowledge how this is affecting
peoples lives and to pray for the world and all people within this unprecedented time, as all
this unfolds. Once the liturgy, hymns, sermon, children’s message and prayers are brought
together to create the order of service then images are sought to help show and tell what the
emphasis is on and help echo the message, within the service.
The planning of the music starts with Rashaan and Pastor Pamela meeting each Monday
morning virtually over Zoom discussing the Lectionary scripture for that Sunday, possible
themes within the seasons, Principal Festivals, Pastor’s sermon themes and other ideas.
Rashaan then seeks out hymn and prelude and postlude possibilities and sends them to Pastor
F A M I L Y D O I N G S M A R - J U N 2 0 2 0 P A G E 7
to enable them both to discuss the hymns and other music. The decision to include
each piece of music is made carefully for these virtual worship services within this Covid-19
Global Pandemic, social distancing, context. The pre-recorded music files with the hymns,
prelude, postlude etc. are prepared by Rashaan, often with the assistance of David Weind for
the recording. Rashaan has done a great job using Accapella Multipoint Software, which
integrates multiple musicians all in perfect synchronization.
Both the Order of Service and the Pre-recorded Music are sent to Mark who then needs
to create “scenes” that piece together in order the various parts of the service. The music files
need to be downloaded by Mark and ready to play in the proper places within the actual live
worship service. All these parts are time intensive! These pieces of the service are brought
together technologically by Mark Wettlaufer using a Mac pro computer and Ecammlive
computer program which connects Pastor Pamela and those people who are Assisting through
Skype to YouTube. All the people are working remotely to: prepare the parts of the service,
take part within the Live Virtual Service, and combine all the parts of the service
technologically.
Prior to Thursday evening Mark and the new people who are assisting within the
service that week connect to make sure to test the Skype link. On Thursday evening at we do
a run through with all the people involved live within the Sunday Worship Service to facilitate
the steady flow for the Sunday morning Live Virtual Worship Service.
On Sunday morning we gather through Skype half-an-hour prior to the start of the
Worship Service to ensure the Skype links are working well. Mark guides us by making sure
we have our water and are well organized for our parts within the service. Mark then guides
us within the service to let us know when music pieces will start and end and prompts us
when we start our different parts within the worship service.
We are a team that works together trusting that if something happens that is unexpected
within the service, then someone will step in to help facilitate the steady flow of the ser-
vice. We all do our best to bring you an opportunity to gather to Worship and we are all learn-
ing as we take this journey together.

Thank you to everyone who is involved within these worship services and also thank you to
each of you for your ongoing support!
Remember that a computer is not required for weekday programs. St Ansgar is using a
tool called Zoom to host meetings. Zoom meetings can be accessed from either a comput-
er or telephone. Contact the Pastor if you would need the phone numbers or links. If
you are new to Zoom meetings please visit http://zoom.us/test to try it out!
Each Tuesday morning from 8:45- 9:15am a small group of us gather virtually on Zoom to
read a short piece of scripture, have some conversation regarding how the text speaks to us
and how we see Christ at work in the world. We read the devotion from “Eternity for Today”
and then pray together. If this sounds like something you would like to participate in, then
please be in touch with us to receive an invitation with a link for the zoom gathering.
All are welcome!

Virtual Sunday School We are blessed with how our intrepid Sunday School teachers, Hannah Kim and Gabriel
Oludipe, have adapted their teaching styles and embraced the use of online video conferenc-
ing during this time of self isolation. Since March Break, they have been engaging the Sun-
day School aged students in not only virtual Sunday School class on Sunday mornings, but
also a fun-filled mid-week online session on Wednesday mornings to support our families
during school closures.
In order to adapt now that online classroom learning has started up in the public and private
school systems, the Wednesday mid-week virtual sessions as of Wednesday, May 13th will be
geared to the senior class level, although children in the junior class are still welcome to at-
tend.
In order to overcome the limitations of internet time
lags re: singing in unison virtually, Rashaan Allwood
has successfully adapted the music program for the
children/youth on Sunday mornings to incorporate
echoing techniques and music theory.
If your children haven’t had a chance to join in the
virtual sessions, I would encourage them to be part of
this online experience!
Please contact either Wendy Paroyan or I if you have any questions, feedback, or ideas to
enhance learning in the virtual environment, or if you’ve been experiencing any problems in
being connected virtually, or limitations with your computer &/or mobile devices.

Wednesday from noon to 1pm each week you are invited to gather vir tually on Zoom
with a group of people for Bible Circle. This is a group conversation! We may start with a
hymn or by sharing what is happening in our life. We read through the upcoming Sunday’s
Gospel text together and then join in a group conversation which is sparked by questions
regarding the scripture and this often takes us on a incredible journey with peoples different
thoughts. Everyone has something to offer to the conversation! We end the time together
with a prayer and sometimes a hymn. All are welcome!

Virtual Exercise Class St. Ansgar successfully started virtual exercise classes on April 27th with our instructor Ava Wappel guiding participants along via Zoom conferencing. Ava previously taught one of the exercise classes in the narthex during the week. Classes are on Monday and Thursday mornings at 10:00 am. Classes can be watched via a computer or participants can dial in with a phone and follow along. These classes are geared to increase mobility and most exercises are completed sitting in your chair. Please join us via Zoom and have a chair, water bottle, towel and 2 cans (to be used as weights) for the classes. All are welcome to join!

At this time we all are still under home isolation health directions and thus the
in-home visits and home communions are suspended. However, this team for congregational
outreach has expanded and adapted it's role to maintain regular contact since mid March by
telephone with approximately 25 of our older singles and couples.
For Mother's Day each mother on our calling list will be mailed a personalized greeting
featuring the poem 'God's Masterpiece' and presented here for the enjoyment of the Family
Doings readers .
God's Masterpiece Is Mother
God took the fragrance of a flower... The majesty of a tree...
The gentleness of morning dew... The calm of a quiet sea...
The beauty of the twilight hour... The soul of a starry night...
The laughter of a rippling brook... The grace of a bird in flight...
Then God fashioned from these things A creation like no other,
And when his masterpiece was through He called it simply - Mother.

Meanwhile, we applaud and encourage ALL the extra prayers and contact being shared with
fellow humans, every where, during COVID-19.

The path to take
I have always been one to reflect on things that happen. I like to think that I try hard not to let the past repeat itself, especially if it is something that I could have done differently to prevent it. This is probably one of the reasons I liked reading those “Choose your own adventure” books when I was a kid. If you do not know this series, you basically read a few paragraphs about some things that happen, and then you are presented with a choice to make. It is usually something simple like “If you choose to open the door, turn to page 45, if you choose to go down the stairs, turn to page 31.” You would follow the story, making your choices of opening doors, going down dark passages or looking in boxes. Eventually the story would come to a conclusion and the story ends. The conclusion could be that your adventure ends there because of a cave in, or that monsters have now surrounded you and you will not make it out alive. But there is always one happy ending where you make it through the adventure alive and well. Back then, I would turn to both page 45 and page 31 to see which option seemed better. In my mind, I would cheat death and find the right course of action through all these choices, just so I would arrive at the best conclusion…the one that is happy. Life was so easy back then. I could just keep the decision point book marked while I peeked at the choices and what would happen there. On reflection of my own actual life choices, I often wished I had that ability, but I do not. I must be WISE with my decisions because in some cases, they affect the lives of other people. So, what governs the choices I make? Why do I open the door or go down that dark passage? Why do I choose to spend time listening to the problems of a friend? I would like to think that my parents raised me with the Christian values that the bible has taught us. The basic rules of “love thy neighbour as yourself” and “if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also”, I have tried to keep. I try to be a good person and offer help to others when in need, but at what cost? In history, there were people like Mother Theresa who gave her whole life in devotion of the practice of helping others who needed it. But even then, how do I know what choices are re-ally the correct ones to make? Those that are against the law are obviously wrong and I will not make those, but what about the ones that look innocent right now? Do I take the left turn or the right turn? Both choices have their own pros and cons. Someone will be helped and someone will be hurt by the choice. What do I do then?

God hath not promised…
I am sure that the only thing on the mind of everyone is the coronavirus and how we are in lock down. It is truly everywhere. I work from home everyday…my “office space” is my kitchen ta-ble because I do not have a home office. I do not get to meet up with my friends any more so when we group chat, it reminds me that we are in separation. I have to put on a mask and gloves if I am going to go to the grocery store to buy necessities. I turn on the news and it is basically coverage of some aspect of COVID-19, whether from what a politician had said or from how people are coping with it. Everywhere I turn, everywhere I look, whatever I do, it reminds me…and as time moves on, it eats away at me… I am generally an extrovert. I like to be around people. Now that I cannot, I feel that I am losing some of the energy that being in public or with friends usually fuels me with. I have read all the jokes about how this is the time when introverts finally get to say: Introverts will probably not say it with as much gusto, but the idea is still there. It is true…the shoe is on the other foot now, and I don’t like these apples at all. What is being eaten away is not these apples, but my hope that we will come out the other side in a good way. I have resolved that a new normal will have to be established, but what does that even mean?
I think these are the decisions that scare people the most, the ones that are innocent looking but may possibly start a chain reaction once you go down that path. I would think nobody wants to feel responsible for the collapse of something.
While reflecting on my life choices and what I have learned along the way, I also remember that Jesus will be there beside me giving me strength to go through life. Whatever happens as a
result of my choice will just lead to other choices and God will be there to give me strength and wisdom in making those decisions based upon the Christian values I have been raised with. Walk in the Lord’s path. That is another lesson that I had been taught growing up. And in the end, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.” [Ps 23:4].

We went through our Easter in isolation. We did not get to be with family. We did not get to have the big dinners that we might have had in previous years. But the message was still the same. Each year at this time, we would turn to Jesus dying on the cross for our sins and then three days later rise from the grave to show us the hope of eternal life with the Father. On the day Jesus died, the disciples and followers went into seclusion. Some probably fled the city to go into hiding away from everyone else. If they showed their faces, they might get into further trouble with local authorities. This kind of sounds like what we are going through during this time. The disciples lived in fear during that time. They probably felt hopeless as well, their hopes dying with Jesus on the cross. I am kind of feeling that now. What is happening with the world? What will the new normal be? It is very common to have a fear of the unknown. I generally like to have some form of control on how my life moves forward, when it does not happen, it strikes fear. This is definitely one for the Gospel to respond to. The Good News was never meant there to remove all of the fears from our hearts. There is a song I sung at church when I was a kid.
“God Hath Not Promised”. God hath not promised skies always blue,
Flower-strewn pathways all our lives through; God hath not promised sun without rain, Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.
<Chorus>
But God hath promised strength for the day, Rest for the labor, light for the way,
Grace for the trials, help from above, Unfailing sympathy, undying love.
This is what God does promise that he will be with us to give us strength and courage to move forward. It might be a path that we cannot see clearly right now, but the with the resurrection of Christ, our fear turns to joy and our despair turns to hope. I hope that we can all support one another during this time and bring this joy, hope, strength and courage to one another as we face the new normal together. Alexander Mak May Submission

Contemporary Vesper
Contemporary Vespers was a project I envisioned with three main goals. First, to build momentum
and inspire within our church music community by presenting original works and working the volun-
teer and children’s music groups. My second goal was to foster a wider reach for St. Ansgar’s music
program, by hiring musicians from around the GTA, and all over Canada. Lastly, I wanted to present
attendees of this event, as well as the musicians (including myself) with new challenges and
experiences.
The text and inspiration for the music is too far reaching to include here, but my biggest inspiration
was working with the members of St. Ansgar. Every piece was composed with the church and its
singers in mind.
All the musical pieces presented in the vespers were premiered by the church choir during services
prior to the vespers. They featured many contemporary classical techniques such as aleatory - which
is when musical elements are left to chance; and 12-tone chromaticism. “Das Reich Gottes/Dein
Reich” had orchestral players rolling dice to determine how many times they would play certain
figurations, and during “the Font,” I gave singers their notes blindfolded so each performance and re-
hearsal would be completely different.
During the month of February, I was asked to curate a lecture recital with Nadine Anyan (one of our
leads at St. Ansgar) based around the music of black composers, to be taken on tour around Canada
and sponsored by TD bank. After researching the subject, I felt motivated and inspired to use the
funds I earned from these performances to create an event that many of the black composers I
researched lacked the ability to do. To work with their contemporary musicians and community as
equals, to come together to make something special. The Contemporary Vespers at St. Ansgar truly
was that; something special.
Perhaps the most inspiring element of the evening was working with the children of the church. It was
thrilling to feature their singing in the two biggest pieces of the evening, Dein Reich and Jehova; and
they willingly joined in with some of the aleatoric moments in “the Magi,” holding up signs with
various syllables and sounds for the choir to sing.

Due to Covid-19 the 15th Annual Gala for The Olive Branch for Children, which had been
scheduled for May 1st at the Bellvue Manor in Vaughan had to be cancelled and has been
postponed until 2021, however, The Olive Branch for Children still needs to provide ser-

That’s why the Gala Committee members are now supporting the “Emergency Fundraising
Campaign 2020”, with a goal of raising $40,000.
If you are able to make a donation to support this amazing charity any amount would be
much appreciated and will help us reach our goal.
To donate to the “Emergency Fundraising

Wait
Stop,
The world you woke up in has changed Hugs are not safe
It is ok if you are afraid Pause,
You are not who you used to be You are evolving with this change
It is ok if you are reluctant. Rest,
Your work will wait The laundry is not important
It is ok if you are tired. Cry,
Your grief is a real and necessary action All your feelings are real It is ok if you are angry.
Eat, Your body needs energy the same way our world now does
You don’t need restrictions It is ok to be satisfied.
Create, Greatness is in the doing
Find an outlet that feeds your soul It is ok to try new things.
Dismantle, Toss old items, old ideas, old behaviours
You do not need the baggage It is ok be unencumbered.
Hope You are powerless to change what the world is
But you are In charge of how you show up It is ok to believe
Wait The world you woke up in has changed
Your job is to be still In the end, it will be ok

Birthdays
A birthday is a time to rest and smile, And count our blessings one by one.
And is also a day to reminisce all the things we’ve done. We don’t count the candles on our cake
but we have to blow them out; every tiny flickering flame.
And as our time seems to pass more quickly, As we grow older,
Greater is the blessing to still be in the game.
