During Post-Lunch Session of Day-1, three technicalsessions with the themes Financial Services Reforms,

Financial Market Reforms and Banking Sector Reformswere conducted.

    Technical Session-1: Financial Services Reforms

The technical session-1 was chaired by Dr A K Vashisht,Professor, University Business School, Panjab University,Punjab and Mr Hitesh Jaswal, Regional Head, PNB MetLife Insurance Company Ltd to enrich the discussion heldamong 14 paper presenters.

The deliberations in the technical sessions took placeright from the financial literacy to financial inclusion andto the surge of crypto currencies. The level of financialliteracy in India has risen on par with the globalbenchmarks due to the efforts of various stakeholders. However, certain challenges still persist towardsachievement of full-fledged financial inclusion such aslack of information and communication technologies, level of education among the rural folks and lack offinancial education. Countries such as India and Brazilhave been successfully implementing BankingCorrespondence model clubbed with the e-paymentservices. To bring the sustainable implementation of e-payment services, the role of m-wallets needsconsiderable attention in redefining the services businessmode l and marke t i ng s t r a t eg i e s . The pos tdemonetization period in India witnessed a spurt ind i g i t a l p a y m e n t s . T h e p r o c l i v i t y t o w a r d scryptocurrencies witnessed strong rally and now Indiaaccounts for more than 11 per cent of such trade globally.Cryptocurrencies have become a global phenomenonand has captured the imagination of speculators, computer geeks and governments across the world. Many cryptocurrencies are floated in the market, likeBitcoin, Litecoin, Namecoin, Swiftcoin, Ripple,Peercoin, Ethereum etc. The rise in bitcoin prices hasbeen phenomenal from $0.3 to $19289. With the adventof blockchain, users can transfer funds at a much cheaperfees and fast time. Nonetheless, the skyrocketing returnsalso opened the doors for unscrupulous transfers ofcurrency violating FEMA Act, 1999. It is a need of thehour for coordinated efforts of regulatory trio, RBI,Enforcement Directorate and Ministry of Finance toregulate the suspected transactions duped by somesnazzy ponzy schemes that lure the small investors toinvest.

    Technical Session-2: Financial Market Reforms

The technical session-2 with the theme Financial MarketReforms was organized in two different tracks. TechnicalSession 2 A was chaired by Dr A K Puri, Senior Professor,FORE School of Management, New Delhi and Dr BabliDhiman, Mittal School of Business, Lovely Professional

University to enrich the discussion held among 14paper presenters. Technical Session 2 B was chaired byDr Sushendra Kumar Mishra, Professor & Registrar,National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar and DrSukhpreet Kaur, Mittal School of Business, LovelyProfessional University. Totally 23 papers werepresented in two parallel technical sessions.

The seminal works on the financial markets proposedthe evolved and efficient financial sector impedes thefinancial shocks that occur externally due to theintegration of global financial markets. The integrationof financial markets also helps in reducing thetransaction cost, and mobilizing savings withdiversification of risk. Due to the financialliberalization embedded with the integration of theeconomies, the investment levels in the form of FDIand FII have exploded. Formation of many regionaleconomic blocks across the economies wascontempla ted to hav ing s imi la r moneta ryarrangements to achieve greater economic integrationand monetary integration.

The volatile nature of stock markets attributed with theasymmetric information and imperfect marketconditions causes anomalies. The beauty of capitalasset pricing model lies in the simplicity tocomprehend the relationship between risk and returns. In contemporary world several challenges to marketefficiency came to existence: few of them are sizeeffect, the weekend effect and momentum effect. Allthese challenges are known as stock market anomaliesand the shortfalls in model for testing marketefficiency. Therefore, the existing CAPM models shallbe revised to comprehensively understand themomentum effect due to dynamic changes in financialmarkets.

The incidence of Social networks communities infinancial markets induced the corporates and investorsis the instant and fresh availability of information foreffective decision making in investment decisions.Social network and financial analytics are burgeoningareas of concern wherein the timely information isavailable to the investors to reduce the contagiouseffects of global financial market anomalies. However, investors' adoption of social media and its usage in theinvestment related search and decision making inselecting stocks in financial markets is at nascent stageof challenge. Orientation towards utilizing theinformational powers of social media addresses theissue to considerable extent.

    Technical Session-3: Banking Sector Reforms

The technical session-3 with the theme Banking SectorReforms was chaired by Dr Sameer Gupta, Professor,University of Jammu and Mr Anu Jindal, Associate Vice-President, IDFC. Nine papers were presented in thetechnical session.

Advancements in technology in banking sector havebrought a paradigm shift in the way the bankingtransactions ate handled. Technology AcceptanceModel was widely used to understand what drives thecustomers to adopt technology in banking. Due to thetechnological explosions in financial services industry, banking industry should implement service deliverycustomization, time and place convenience tocustomers followed by differential pricing which willencourage the users to migrate to the digital platform.Demonetization of larger denominated currencies is agame changer in banking industry. On the technologyfront, the earlier days of demonetization witnessedmore than double the number of transactions took placethrough technology. However, the banking sector is alsopoised with the challenges such as escalating Non-performing assets and reduction in interest rates due toexcess supply of cash in its hand. Blessing in disguise, the recapitalization of PSU banks by CentralGovernment of India and consolidation process in thesector will address the critical challenges faced by thebanking industry.

Technical Session-4: Taxation Issues and Reforms

The technical session-4 with the theme: “TaxationIssues and Reforms” was chaired by Dr Pankaj KumarGupta, Professor, Jamia Milia Islamia University, NewDelhi and CA Navdeep Sharma, Chartered Accountant,Jalandhar. Nine papers were presented in the technicalsession.

The introduction of Goods and Services tax has beenacknowledged as one of the drastic and substantialreform since independence in the field of indirect taxes. The government has taken the initiative to overcome thechallenges, serious issues and loopholes in the existingstructure of indirect taxes. The basic premise of Goodsand Services tax is to eliminate tax terrorism in Indiawhich is prevailing in the form of double taxation aswell as to simplify the complex tax structure to improvetax administration as well as tax collection in order tos t rengthen the economic pos ture of India .Constitutional Amendments, political disagreement, technical challenges, businessmen protest etc had beenthe contributory factors for the delayed implementationof GST in India. problems in receiving the acceptance mandate frombusinessmen. The consistent efforts in renderingassistance to businesses (especially SMEs) in filingGST returns are essential to implement GST insustainable manner.

The other substantial reform that took place in thefield of Accounting is the convergence of Ind-AS withIFRS in phased manner by Indian companies to makesuitable changes in the financial statements. Still, Ind-AS follow conservative mechanism that also assuresInd-AS reporting provides more current and qualityinformation compared to previous IGAAP.

Technical Session-5: Corporate Governance andAccounting Reforms

The technical session-5 with the theme CorporateGovernance and Accounting Reforms was chaired byDr C P Gupta, Professor, University of Delhi, SouthCampus, New Delhi and Dr Ravi Inder Singh,Professor, University Business School, PanjabUniversity Regional Center, Panjab University,Ludhiana. 14 papers were presented in the technicalsession.

Corporate governance practices directly influence thestrategic decisions taken in a company. The drasticchanges at high pace in the business and economicenvironment, rose the information asymmetrybetween company and shareholders. Every disclosurecomes with a purpose to attain the stakeholders' trustfrom the transparency reflected in the disclosures. While suggesting the mechanism required tostrengthen the corporate governance practices inIndian businesses, the deliberations in boardfeatures/ownership is required to have moretransparent disclosures. The corporate governancemechanism should be further strengthened to addressthe cyber-crimes and financial frauds.

A renownededucationist and academician, Dr Dhar has over threeand half decades of experience in post graduateteaching, corporate training, faculty development, consultancy and research.

May 29, 2018: Brief Introduction of the Workshopand Visit to Various Organisations

Management education cannot be complete withoutciting appropriate examples. Case method, hence, has gained significant importance as an alternativepedagogical tool to the traditional lecture method ofimparting knowledge to learners. There is a dearth ofqualitatively rich cases, which are developed inIndian environment. The challenges and intricaciesinvolved in Indian management are yet to be fullydemonstrated. This workshop is an attempt tofacilitate the faculty members working in various B-schools to write management cases based on Indiansituations.

The objective of the workshop was to –

To develop case writing skills of the participants. To encourage the use of case method as a

pedagogical tool by providing rich inputs forimproving the analytical skills of participants.

In view of the inadequacy of suitable caseliterature reflecting Indian situations, theworkshop aims at developing and publishingcase studies for use in teaching and trainingsessions.

Dr Upinder Dhar briefed the history of case writing andthe B-Schools. The first B-School was Harvard BusinessSchool which was established in 1908 and first casestudy was developed in 1920. In India, IIM-Calcutta in1957 pioneered for developing the case study however, the case method became more popular in IIM-Ahmedabad, which came into existence in 1962-63. DrDhar further highlighted the importance of 4D modelwhile developing the case study i.e., Data Collection,Drafting, Discussion and Documentation. He alsoguided the participants to first build repo with thecoordinator deputed by the organization and then askthe questions. While asking the questions it should bekept in mind that the questions shall not be repeated andthe narrator shall not be interrupted. The participantsshall note down each and every information religiously.Dr Dhar further suggested that the case can be dividedinto three parts: First is the Background (Aboutorganization/person), Second is the Body of the Case(Issues/Challenges/Opportunities) and Third is theconclusion part which decides that whether the case isHistoric Case or Problem based case. Also, questionsshall be incorporated at the end. Teaching notes shallalso be prepared, following the guidelines of the caserepository.

After that all the participants were requested to proceedfor lunch followed by the visit to various organisations. The participants were grouped according to their streamand experiences. Five groups were formed. Priorintimation and approval were taken from theseorganisations and the concerned authorities in theseorganisations deputed a coordinator from their endwhich would brief the participants about theopportunities and challenges encountered by theseorganisations.

The conveyance was provided by the SVVV Universityand all the five groups left for visiting variousorganisations to develop the case study.
