Conclave DetailsThere are 243 million internet users in India which is expected to soar to 400 million in a couple of years.
There are 950 million mobile subscribers in India out of which 130 million access Internet through their
mobile phones. 86% of Indian with web access visit at least one social media site such as Face book, Twitter
and others. This has influenced the way people buy products and services – be it banking, ticketing, news,
property, electronics, jewellery etc. Email, Internet and mobile have emerged as major media vehicles for
reaching the customers. According to a new research one in 3 FMCG shoppers go online first to gather
information about brands and prices before going to a physical store to buy the product. Consequently
digital marketing is becoming mainline marketing.
The Conclave aims to enhance our understanding on digital marketing and develop models and methods
to enhance the effectiveness of the same in emerging markets. The sub-themes have been so designed
keeping in mind a range of topics that are important from the perspective of the theme of the Conclave. The
Conclave has the following sub themes:

Rebirth of e-commerce in India
India is at the cusp of a digital revolution. Internet has become an integral part of the growing Urban Indian
population, various factors have been driving this trend, such as , declining broadband subscription
fees, launch of 3G services leading to an ever-increasing member of netizens, Ubran India’s changing
lifestyle, convenience of online shopping and changes in supporting Eco-system.
Although the trend of ecommerce has been making rounds in India for 15 years, the appropriate ecosystem
has now started to fall in place. The e-commerce market in India has enjoyed phenomenal growth of
almost 50% in the last 5 years.
The key factors driving the growth story of e-commerce in India include, considerable rise in the number of
internet users, growing acceptability of online payments, proliferation of internet-enabled devices
&favorable demographics.
Understanding the digital consumers in emerging markets
Companies that harness word of mouth effects, emphasize in store execution, and get their brands
into shoppers ’ short lists for initial consideration are more likely to capture the loyalty of emerging
market consumers.
As the rapid growth of emerging markets gives millions of consumers new spending power, those
consumers are encountering a marketing environment every bit as complex and swiftly evolving as
its counterpart in developed countries. Product choices, and, as everywhere consumer empowerment
is on the rise. Finally, companies need to place special emphasis on what happens when products
reach the shelves of retailers, because the in store phase of the consumer decision journey tends
to be longer and more important in emerging markets than in developed ones.

Social media opportunities across different sectors:
Social media has evolved from dorm room toy to boardroom tool. Thus for, social media has largely been
limited to marketing and community building functions at companies. A recent report from McKinsey
showed that a majority of the estimated $1.3 trillion in untapped value from social technologies lies
in “Improved Communications and Collaboration within and across enterprises.” In other words,
social media is poised to become an office productivity tool.
Already, HR departments are using social media to connect with job seekers and streamline the application
process. Sales Team use social media to generate leads and track clients as they move through the sales
funnel, operations and distribution teams forecast supply chains, while research and development squads
brainstorm product ideas. Today social media is a serious business tool.
Online Marketing analytics & ROI
Online and digital marketing have become an integral component of the marketing strategies many
companies. However, very few of us are tracking the ROI of our digital and social media Initiatives. Since
Google analytics has released social media reporting, it has streamlined the way we can report onsite social
media conversions and value. There are a number of challenges one encounter when trying to measure and
report on the social media initiatives.
Plan a mobile marketing strategy
Mobile gives the chance for an anything any place anywhere connection to consumers. Mobile phones and
tablets have revolutionized digital marketing because they open up radically new touch points for where and

Professor JagdishSheth is the Charles H. Kellstadt Professor of Marketing at Emory University Goizueta
Business School.
He is known nationally and internationally for his scholarly contributions in consumer behavior,
relationship marketing, competitive strategy, and geopolitical analysis. When he joined Emory’s faculty in
1991, Professor Sheth had nearly 30 years of combined experience in marketing from the University of
Southern California, the University of Illinois, Columbia University, and Massachusetts Institute of
Technology.
Throughout his career, Professor Sheth has offered more than a thousand presentations in at least twenty
countries. He has also provided consulting for numerous companies in the United States, Europe and Asia.
His client list includes AT&T, BellSouth, Cox Communications, Delta, Ernst & Young, Ford, GE, Lucent
Technologies, Motorola, Nortel, Pillsbury, Sprint, Square D, 3M, Whirlpool, and others. Currently, Professor
Sheth sits on the Board of Directors of several public companies including Norstan, Cryo Cell International,
and Wipro Limited.
Professor Sheth’s accolades include “Outstanding Marketing Educator,” an award presented by the
Academy of Marketing Science, the “Outstanding Educator” award twice-presented by Sales and
Marketing Executives International, and the P.D. Converse Award for his outstanding contributions to
theory in marketing, presented by the American Marketing Association. Professor Sheth is the recipient of
the two highest awards given by the American Marketing Association: the Richard D. Irwin Distinguished
Marketing Educator Award and the Charles Coolidge Parlin Award.
In 1996, Professor Sheth was selected as the Distinguished Fellow of the Academy of Marketing Science.
The following year, he was awarded the Distinguished Fellow award from the International Engineering
Consortium. Professor Sheth is currently a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (known as
APA).
Professor Sheth has authored or coauthored hundreds of articles and books. In 2000, he and Andrew Sobel
published the best seller, Clients for Life. In 2001, Value Space, which he coauthored with Banwari Mittal,
was published. Professor Sheth’s most popular book, The Rule of Three, was coauthored with Dr.
RajendraSisodia and published in 2002. He has since written notable publications: Tectonic Shift, Firms of
Endearment and 4 As of Marketing.

Prof. MJ Xavier obtained his Doctorate in Management (1984) from the Indian Institute of Management,
Calcutta. He is basically an engineer with an M.Tech. (1979) in Chemical Plant Engineering from Regional
Engineering College, Warangal and B.Tech.(1976) in Chemical Engineering from Coimbatore Institute of
Technology.
Prof. M. J. Xavier was the Founding Director of Indian Institute of Management Ranchi (IIM Ranchi). He has
more than 25 years of professional experience in teaching, research, and consultancy. He has served as a
Research Executive in Mode Research Pvt. Ltd., Calcutta (1982-84) and as Manager in-charge of
Management Development and Services with SPIC Ltd., Chennai (1985-91). He has taught at XLRI,
Jamshedpur (1984-84), IIM Bangalore (1991-96), IFMR Chennai (1998 – 2006) and Great lakes Institute of
Management, Chennai (2008-2010). He is currently the Executive Director at VIT Business School
(Vellore/Chennai)
His areas of interest include Marketing Research, Data Mining, e-Governance and Spirituality. He has
conducted a number of training programmes for executives and has also been a consultant to several
companies in India and abroad.
He has authored three books and published more than 100 articles in Journals and Magazines in India and
Abroad. His book ̀Marketing in the New Millennium ’ won the DMA-Escorts Award for the best Management
Book of the Year 1999.
He has served as Visiting Faculty to a number of business schools in India and abroad including The
University of Buckingham, U.K. (1993), The Texas Christian University, U.S.A. (1999), California Polytechnic
State University, USA (2003-05) and The American University of Armenia, Armenia (2006).
