We have had a busy and re- warding fortnight. Firstly, I wish to thank the en- tire school community for their respectful acknowledgement of ANZAC Day. Our school ser- vice was time for reflection and our students and the families that attended all commented on the moving service. Im also appreciative that Cr Fiona King, Bart Mellish MP and P&C President Sandra McKenzie were able to join us for the occa- sion. A special thanks goes to Mr Robinson and Ms Waters for their involvement in the service. At the Geebung and Zillmere RSL march on AN- ZAC Day we had over 70 students march under the banner of our great school. It was again a privilege for myself and Ms Callaghan to lead our students and their families at the march. Thank you again to all those who joined the march and the ANZAC Day service. Endurance sports are not only a test of the body but also the mind. I guess that makes them such a challenge. Our Geebung State School representa- tives performed well at the Bramble Bay Cross Country competition last week and I applaud their efforts. It was also wonderful to see our junior stu- dents participating at the Junior Cross Country. The morning was highlighted by wonderful sports- manship by all and a never give upattitude by the runners. Thanks Mrs Baker for your coordination and the parents for your support. I have been enjoying seeing the Writers Club being enthusiastically supported by students of all ages. Writing is a wonderful way that we can express ourselves. Make sure you pop into the library to look at some of the displays Ms Waters has set up highlighting the great work of our future authors. A reminder that in week 5 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, our Year 3 and Year 5 students will be participating in NAPLAN. Please make sure these students arrive on time. Also a reminder that Chappy Kerry will have a light breakfast available to our Year 3 and Year 5 students before school starts. All volunteers must complete our annual volunteer induction. This includes Tuckshop, Reading Army, helping in classrooms, swimming, etc. All volun- teers must also sign in and out at the office whilst on site performing your volunteer duties. Thanks for following this process. Please book in at the office for induction training. Please see dates/ times in the Calendar on page three. Cr King and Brisbane Inner North Rotary Club would like to congratulate Mitchell M from Class 4A for achieving 3rd place in the Art Competition, and Caitlyn K from 4A for receiving a High Commenda- tion. Well done students. I recently read an interesting article that claimed that If you own the first hour of your day, then you will have greater success with the remaining hours in the day. This has been a timely piece of advice for me and I wanted to share it with you too. Most people benefit from good structure. Children even more so. A good morning routine can really help to get the day off to a smooth start. Finding time to be calm and settled as we mentally prepare for the day ahead is helpful. I challenge us all to revisit our morning routines and see how we can ensure that there is a moment of calm each morning that we can use wisely to better prepare for a success- ful day. Deputy Principal News

Chappy Week is coming up and this is a good time to reflect and appreciate everything Kerry our Chaplin does at Geebung State School. Kerry is involved in class activities supporting student’s learning; supports families in times of grief or crisis; runs a playtime club for students; helps run a homework club for students and supports our staff. Kerry is involved in working with the community as well. Look out for Kerry’s notice about Chappy Week and the great activities she has organised for that week. Kerry has also organised a breakfast for our students in Year 3 and 5 who are participating in NAPLAN in Week 5 on Tuesday, Wednes-day and Thursday morning. It was such a pleasure this week to be a part of the Junior Cross Country. All Prep, Year 1, Year 2 and some Year 3 students completed the big lap around our oval. Hearing the children cheer each other on shows what great sportsmanship we have at Geebung State School. Well done to some of your Teachers, Mrs Drake and Mrs Tarrant who also completed the course in support of their students. It was a wonderful morning had by all. Thank you to all the parents and families who attended and also to Mrs Baker for organising this won-derful event. Lunch Time Clubs Writers Club with Ms Waters are finishing their individual stories they created and wrote themselves. The students will then get a chance to share their stories with others and celebrate their work. Parents, ask your child to read you their story. Gardening Club with Brett, Mrs Tarrant and Mr Robinson have been planting beans, cauliflower, broccoli, cu-cumbers, strawberries, carrots, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, corn and capsicum. They have also been busy weeding and fertilising the plants. Parents, see how many of the fruits and vegetables you child can identify or have tried. Student Council with Mrs Anderson and students from our Year 6 leadership team have been discussing ways to raise money for the end of year gift from Student Council to the school. Look out for a Pyjama Day (free dress day) coming in the cooler months. Coding Club with Mr Jackson have been using the Scratch coding online teaching tips to learn different skills eg. creating shapes, making objects fly, making icons dance on the screen. Parents, if your child attends Coding Club, get them to show you how to create a dancing object. Penny Callaghan Deputy Principal

Under Eights Day

Under Eights Week is an event proudly initiated by Early Childhood Australia Queensland. It has

been running for over 60 years across Queensland. This year’s theme is ‘Children Exploring Lan-

guage and Culture’. It is about acknowledging the importance of learning in the early years of a

child’s life.

Please join us on Wednesday 22nd

May 2018 as our Prep to Year 2 students enjoy special activi-

ties designed to embrace the joy of early childhood!

Activities will start at 9am on the school oval. This is always a special occasion for our Early

Years students and we encourage you to join them on this special day.

Chess Mates is teaching at Geebung State School!

Chess Mates specialises in teaching chess to children of all age groups and skill levels. Our team is dedicated to teaching chess in a fun and engaging way so that children of any age can join in regardless of experience level. We teach younger students through songs and stories, for older or more advanced students we teach openings, strategies and forward planning. We don’t focus on winning (in fact, we teach kids how to deal with winning and losing). Instead, we focus on making new friends and having fun while learning.

Classes are held on Tuesday's from 3:15 to 4:00 in the hall. The cost of the classes is $8 per class.

If you have any questions about the classes please either e-mail [email protected] or call Ash on 0415 256 452.
