SCHOOL BANKING Help needed in 2018

Rangeview Primary School participates in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program offered to students. Our lovely parent helper, Irene has been facilitating this at Rangeview Primary School for many years. As her youngest is going to Secondary School in 2018 she would love to hand-over this easy job to other parent helpers to start next year. The process is quite simple, usually is a 20 minute, weekly commitment and the office can help you if you get stuck. It would be great to have a couple of volunteers to share the load.

Please contact the office on 9874 6381 if you would like to offer your help. Training will be supplied.

About School Banking at Rangeview Primary School Commonwealth Bank Accounts can be opened on-line at: www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.

Or In Branch: Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate etc. School Banking day is every Wednesday before 9.30am (duirng school terms)

Students in level 1 and 2 visited the IMAX Museum and IMAX theatre as part of their Minibeasts unit. Level 2 had a special expert visiting sharing his knowledge about Minibeasts on Monday.

Bruce Tomkins is an Entomologist and visited the level 2 classes to show the students some Minibeasts and answer questions. He even left some class pets to observe as they grow and go through metamorphosis!

News from First Aid—Ms Melissa McCarthy On Thursday, the 2nd of November 2017 I attended a very informative Thunderstorm Asthma education seminar in Blackburn South, conducted by the Asthma Foundation of Victoria. The Victorian Government is offering more than 100 Thunderstorm Asthma Com-munity Education Sessions across 18 regions of metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria. The thunderstorm of Monday, 21 November 2016 triggered an unprecedented thunderstorm asthma event in metropolitan Mel-bourne and Geelong. It caused significant demand on both Ambulance Victoria and hospital emergency departments and sadly may have contributed to nine lives being lost. The aim of the campaign is to ensure that Victorians can:

recognise and respond; be prepared; and be able to access information

These free community sessions can be attended by anyone, and will cover the following topics: What is Thunderstorm Asthma Who is at risk of Thunderstorm Asthma How do you respond to a thunderstorm event How to perform asthma First Aid The link between asthma and hay fever

The Asthma Foundation of Victoria will be working with a range of key stakeholders to ensure as many people as possible can attend these sessions. To book your place in a session please click HERE or contact the Asthma Foundation of Victoria di-rectly on 1800 ASTHMA (1800 278 462).

For those unable to attend one of the seminars here are some helpful tips I took away from this session:

People most likely to be affected by a Thunderstorm Asthma event are, people with Asthma, people with past history of Asthma, undiagnosed Asthma, and people with hay fever who may or may not have asthma.

People who have ongoing poor control over their Asthma and/or hay fever are at a greater risk of being affected by a Thun-derstorm Asthma event. Therefore, managing your hay fever well can help to reduce Asthma symptoms.

Melbourne Pollen Count App is a very helpful website to use. Once loaded this app will advise of whether the current fore-cast is for low, moderate or high pollen counts. Counting the levels of pollen in Melbourne’s air means they can tell people who suffer from debilitating allergy conditions, such as asthma and hay fever, of days that are forecast to have high pollen levels. This app also has a Thunderstorm Asthma forecast as well. Thunderstorm Asthma forecasts in Victoria will start on 1st of October and will continue through to 31st of December.

For further information on Asthma go to https://www.asthmaaustralia.org.au/vic/about-asthma/manage-your-asthma/triggers/epidemic-thunderstorm-asthma or you can view the following short video which explains more about Thunderstorm Asthma and how it affects people with Asthma and hay fever. https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/videos/thunderstorm-asthma-overview
