Issue 9 - 23 August 2018 Hello Parents and Caregivers Thank you for your support this term with following up on absences. As we know, regular attendance is essential for making progress both academically and socially, with developing friendships and problem-solving skills. From time to time we all get sick and we have had a lot of children and staff very unwell over the first half of the term. Hopefully as the weather improves, so will our health. Please remember to either ring the office, send a note, message on Class Dojo or call in to see your class teacher if your child has been off school for any reason. Planning for 2019 It may seem early however we do need to begin planning for next year. If you know that your child or children will be leaving Neerigen Brook PS and will not be attending here next term or in 2019, please advise your class teacher or come into the office to let us know. This will assist with class placement for 2019. If you have any questions, please call in to the office and ask for assistance. Swimming Lessons 2019 Thank you for your patience with this. We are excited to announce that we have managed to secure swimming lesson dates for 2019. They will be held at the Cockburn Aquatic and Recreation Centre- ARC during week 8, Term 2. The children will attend 17.6.19 – 21.6.19 for a series of five 80-minute lessons. Thanks to Mr Cahill for his persistence in securing the dates. More information will be given closer to the date. If you would like information for Vacswim during the school holidays you could obtain this information from the Child and Parent Centre at Challis or go to the website at https://www.education.wa.edu.au/vacswim NAIDOC Thank you to everyone who attended our NAIDOC events activities. It was terrific to have so many parents, caregivers and community members involved in the events. Thank you to Mrs Anderson and our Dardy Yorgas for all their hard work and effort in organising activities for classes to participate in. Well done to all of our staff and students for the attention and focus shown throughout the week, and demonstrating SLANT listening during the presentations and performances. Learning Journey is fast approaching on Wednesday 13 September from 3:00-5:00pm. (Check with Chris) This event is an important part of our calendar where children take the special adults in their lives around the classroom to talk about their learning. It’s the journey of learning that we celebrate at this event with each child sharing the process they went through to achieve their task or goal. We’d love everyone in our community to come along and join this special occasion and take pride in the efforts our children make to strive to achieve. Year 6 Transition During Term 4, to support transition to high school, the Year 6 students will be participating in a series of nine lessons, facilitated by our teachers and our social worker Amber. Amber will work with our Year 6 students to assist in developing strategies and discussing any questions or concerns the students may have on topics such as: First impressions Friendships circles Resilience Goal setting Dealing with conflict Dealing with the loss of or change of friends. NAIDOC Week WOW what a week. NAIDOC celebrations have been the highlight of the week at NBPS. Our Dardy Yorgas have been working so hard to provide rich learning experiences for all the students. The week began with a memorable Opening Ceremony where we heard Ms Elizabeth Gogos sing two inspiring songs followed by guest dancers on Tuesday, rotational activities on Wednesday and the History Museum on Thursday. The Dardy Yorgas ended the week with a donation to the Minderoo Organisation and a Torres Strait Islander song and dance at the closing ceremony. Although learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture does not end this week it has been wonderful to be in the spot light. A display of some work samples carried out this week is in the undercover area. A special thanks to all the visitors to the school who made this such a memorable week and to our wonderfully talented Dardy Yorgas. Cecilia Anderson

Sports Carnival Day! Jumps and throws events will be held on Monday the 27th August. The Athletics Carnival will be held in Week 7 of Term 3, on Friday the 31st of August Special Lunch orders can be ordered from the canteen for Friday. Please collect and order form from the canteen or office.

My goodness it has been a busy start to Term Three! In between preparing for our assembly on Growth Mindset we have been learning all about division. We are able to explain that division is about sharing things equally and are able to use grouping to find the answer to a division sum. We started off my learning the vocabulary that we would be hearing throughout the unit. We then used hands on materials such as counters and unifix blocks to share between groups. Once we were able to share the counters evenly Miss Downey introduced us to what the sums looked like and some cheeky tricks to help us remember the process. We have enjoyed learning something new and being able to demonstrate our new knowledge through a range of activities. Room 9 are definitely becoming division dynamites. Miss Downey and Room 9

Hi everyone ……Nicole from the canteen here! Our school would like to say a HUGE thank you to Bunnings Armadale. Vicky (their lovely activities officer) was so helpful organising the donation of the tubs that we needed to carry the lunch orders in. We have 15 of them, all brightly colored and looking amazing!

We also want to say a HUGE thank you to Woolworths Armadale, for kindly donating the sausages we used for the Derby Day sausage sizzle. We really appreciate our local businesses supporting our school. Derby Day was a big hit in the canteen, thank you everyone who ordered on the day! We cooked over 100 hotdogs and couldn’t have done it without our lovely Volunteers Louise, Shelly, (Bubba) & Katie. Thank you so much for your help! If you have any spare time to help out in the canteen even an hour or so, please come and say hi to me. We really need help if we want to have a great canteen & keep it open. Did you know we have Vegetarian options on the menu? We have veggie fried rice, veggie curry & rice and moussaka. All the food in the hot lunch section on our menu are all made from scratch in our kitchen with quality fresh ingredients. My pizzas can also be made vegetarian and my pizza bases are also made fresh on premises. Stay tuned…….. We have some fun things happening in the school and canteen later in August. We have healthy bones week and book week with some great things coming to the menu! Our menu is colour coded According to the Western Australian Department of Education Healthy Food and Drink policy. GREEN = FILLS MOST OUR MENU. AMBER = CHOOSE CAREFULLY. RED = OFF THE MENU.

Our menu complies with the Australian Dietary Guidelines for Children & Adolescents making our menu 87% GREEN. Canteen Opening Dates for September Please be advised that the canteen will only be open on the following dates for September: Thursday 6
