Children’s Sermon – Pastor Kyle

Scripture Reading – 1 King 19:9-18 9 There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are

you doing here, Elijah?” 10 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The

Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with

the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” 11 The Lord said, “Go out

and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a

great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but

the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the

earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire

came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and

stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14 He

replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your

covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one

left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” 15 The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came,

and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. 16 Also,

anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to

succeed you as prophet. 17 Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha

will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu. 18 Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all

whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”

One: This is the Word of God for the people of God.

Looking Ahead…

~There will be a Church Council Meeting at 7PM on Thursday, August 18th.

~SPRC will hold a meeting in the office meeting room on Tuesday, August 23rd, at 6PM.

~The United Methodist Men will hold their annual Steak Feed on Saturday, September 10th,

at 5PM. More details to come!

August 28th! Dress comfortably and bring your lawn chair as we move our worship outside for the day. We will have a combined worship service on the church lawn beginning at 10:30AM and there will be a lunch to follow. Chicken, beverages, and paper products will be provided for lunch; just bring a covered dish to share to complete the meal. Sign-up sheets for the luncheon will be circulated at both services on Sunday, August 21st.

CHANCEL CHOIR will resume its regular practice schedule on Wednesday, August 24th at 7PM in Room 10. Come out and sing a little, talk a little, and eat a little with us. We are in special need of new ladies to join the choir. In light of this need, we are asking everyone to invite their "girlfriend" to choir practice...or wife, sister, daughter, niece, etc. Men are welcome too. In addition to singing, we will also have a time of fellowship with light refreshments. Bring a tasty treat to share. We will continue practices on Wednesdays at 7PM and will sing on Sunday mornings (10:30 service) beginning on September 4th. Prayer, Inspiration, and Encouragement The next meeting of the PIE group will be Thursday, September 1st, at 7PM at Kelly and Brian Griffin's.

Book Study - The Book Group has chosen When Crickets Cry by Charles Martin for their

next book. The group will meet at 7:00PM on Monday, September 19, at Sue Morgan’s

(127 Frost Ave.) to discuss it. UMM Pulled Pork Dinner is Coming Up! It’s just about that time of the year again – the

United Methodist Men will be holding their annual pulled pork fundraiser on Thursday,

September 1st. Representatives of the UMM will be on hand to take orders after the service

for the next few Sundays. The UMM need donations of individually-wrapped brownies for

this event – please contact a member of the UMM if you would like to help. Thank you!
