STATEMENT OF PURPOSE OF THE PORTFOLIO

Page 3: FS 1 Portfolio

We are assigned to observe the Tugbongan Elementary School, and because of those observations we get some ideas from the class that we had observed. And because of those experiences, our minds are already enlightened on what kind of profession we are soon to face.

The reason why I make this portfolio is because I want others to know on what the real scenario in elementary school. I want others to know on how difficult the job of the elementary teacher. Others say that the teacher are just a repeater, it is the simplest job of the world that even those person who are not licensed are capable to teach. And I believed so. That’s why when I’m inside the room, observing how the teacher managed her pupils, on how she hold her patients towards her pupils I feel pity to the teacher because she is eager to impart the learning that she have, but sad to say her pupils are listening to her, others are quarrelling, others are eating, it seems that the teachers effort are useless. I meditate to that scenario, on what if, I experience this kind scenario too, I ask to myself if I can hold my temper as what the teacher did, or I will not come back. That’s why I’m very thankful that we have this kind of curriculum which is field study 1, which gives us full opportunity to observe in elementary school. Without this curriculum, we will left hanging.

So, now we already understood our profession, and now we’re ready to face another chapter of our life. And I hope that others will also know the value of our teachers, on how big is their sacrifices towards us, students.

SCHOOL CAMPUS AND COMMUNITY VISIT

Page 4: FS 1 Portfolio

The school is very accessible, the community is very peaceful, they have their own guard and helper. The rooms are well painted and well decorated. The pupils are properly aligned during flag ceremony, and they have lots of plants inside and outside the rooms. The teachers are in uniform also, the teachers arrived early in the morning. Almost all of the rooms have their comfort room, their chairs are properly arranged, and the pupils are in complete uniform. They do have a cafeteria and Home Economics room but they don’t have a library, reading center, medical clinic, counseling room, laboratory and audio visual room or media center.

Even if they are lack of some facilities, still I can say that the quality of their education is there, because pupils are very active in participating in the discussion, and they are able to answer the questions of their teacher, though some did not, but only few of them and besides teacher is able to re-teach them in their most convenient time.

The teachers are very hospitable, though the principal are not, but still we are very thankful that the principal allow us to observe in the school. During our meeting with the principal, the principal is asking an in-return or shall we say a donation to school, for the reason that the school welcomed us without being interfered.

During class hours, there are many loiterers who use to loiter outside, they are high school students, because High School and Elementary are located only in one place or shall we say, shared in one place, because of that, high school student use to loiter around the elementary campus and sometimes it disturbed classes. But the teachers are able to handle them.

Some of the teacher uses corporal punishment towards her pupils and some are not, though pupils are naughty and hardheaded, some of the teachers use to apply some reinforcements to the child.

REFLECTION ON EACH SECTION

As what you’ve seen in the entries or evidence, the school has limited facilities. They don’t have library, which allows them to research or to be acquainted with different ideas, they also don’t have laboratory which hone their scientific and reasoning ability, also audio visual room/ media center, counseling room and reading center, they don’t have this facilities. As what I had observed in private school, they do have these facilities, but here in public, they are limited or lack of resources.

Even if the school has limited resources, the teachers are able to teach well or with competence. They are asking of some of these facilities in order to attain the quality education but sad to say, here in public it’s only a dream. All they need to do is to do their best in teaching so that the pupils will not be left hanging due to insufficient facilities. Some of the teacher spends their own money in upgrading their classroom, in decorating and cleaning.

Unlike those teacher who taught in private school, that they are provided in all their needs, like chalk and etc. And they only have 20-30 pupils to handle with. Maybe that’s the leading cause why they are very effective and why those pupils who study at private is more advance than those who study at public school.

In order for the school to be more advance they must possess first this needed facilities most especially the library. But due to the lack of budget, this problem ‘till now is not yet resolved.

So, for us future educator, we will do our best in order to cope with this problem and to be a part of the solution rather than a part of the problem. And I hope that this problem will not interfere the pupil’s learning.

ADDITIONAL ENTRIES TO THE PORTFOLIO

My observation on the motivation is that the teacher motivates her pupils by asking questions, and as what as I’ve observed, there is a proper motivation because pupils are really motivated to participate in the class. The teacher uses the art of questioning, giving a lots of ideas and sharing past experiences and by allowing pupils to answer on the board. Furthermore, In arousing the interest of the pupils, the teacher may use the still pictures and books. My commendations is that the voice of the teacher is sometimes very low and that’s the reason why some of the pupils were going to the front in order to hear the teacher and lastly, I recommend that the teacher must louder her voice so that those pupils at the back may hear.(Mrs. Jeanny ibon, Grade IV Faith)

My observation on the assignments is that the assignments are sometimes a continuation of the lesson or introduction of the lesson, and the assignment was given after or before the class and teacher write the assignment before the class starts. In motivating the child, the uses more realistic and not so difficult assignments, the teacher makes the assignment easier and more realistic. The teacher gives additional points to those who made their project but those who don’t, the teacher will apply punishment. Some of the pupil fails to follow the instruction of their assignment so I recommend that the teacher must clarify her instruction and elaborate it in order to avoid confusion.(Mrs. Vilma Oyao, Grade III Faith)

My observation on the teacher is that the teacher is in complete uniform, she has the interest to teach and she keeps her class lively. While she is discussing, her pupils were actively participating. But sometimes the teacher cannot control her temper and when there is quarrelling, she

Page 9: FS 1 Portfolio

automatically apply corporal punishment. Her best trait is that she is active and enthusiastic. I recommend that she must extend her patience towards those hyperactive pupils. (Mrs. Elenita Ruedas, Grade III Joy)

My observation on classroom management is that the pupils are well-prepared, the teacher is in control or shall we say, able to manage her classroom. The balance in literacy exists because the teacher was supporting her pupils and the pupils are participating. The activities are well coordinated, after stepping from one level the teacher move to the next level and the pupils are well participative truly, they are motivated to answer. Overall the teacher is able to manage her classroom but sometimes she fails to hold her temper so I recommend that the teacher should extend her patience towards her pupils. (Mrs. Vilma Oyao, Grade III Faith)

My observation on evaluation is that the teacher uses static test because the teacher aims to measure what pupils has learned. Her primary purpose on giving a test is to evaluate the pupils whether the pupils are learning or not. But I notice limitations, and one of the limitations is that the pupils are just memorizing and not comprehending. I recommend that sometimes she must teach her pupils how to comprehend what they’ve read. (Mrs. Jeanny Ibon, Grade IV Hope)

My observation on the objectives of the lesson is that, the main objective of the lesson is to let the pupils know what animals are hatch eggs and what are not. And the pupils are able to distinguish on which animals are watch egg. The teacher also uses human as an example of a non hatch egg animal. The teachers are successful and able to accomplish her objectives. I recommend that in order for the pupils catch up faster is that the teacher must use still picture in identifying on which is really hatch egg and which is not. (Mrs. Jeanny Ibon, Grade IV Faith)

My observation on the content of the lesson is that the teacher is very focus on presenting her lesson, she forgot to apply some values on her lesson. Because her subject is math so ask her to pupils to count the denomination of the money. And it is much related to her subject. One aspect were developed during discussion, the mental aspect. The pupils are able to count and able to understand. I think the best feature that the teacher have is she uses real money as an example to her lesson, she starts from specific to general. I recommend that the teacher must ask or give some values to her pupils. (Mrs. Lolita Zabate, Grade II Hope)

Page 10: FS 1 Portfolio

My observation on the lesson planning is that the teacher uses the art of questioning in order to motivate her pupils, she also uses real life examples which the can easily relate with. The primary objective of the lesson is to know the pupils on which animals is hatch egg and which is not. After her discussion, she evaluate her pupils whether they’ve understand something. And as what as I observed, the really follow her lesson plan. I recommend that the teacher must also used still picture because almost all of the pupils are visual learners, and they easily understand when there is picture. (Mrs. Jeanny Ibon, Grade IV Hope)

My observation on teaching procedure is that the teacher really tries to teach her pupils but unfortunately as what I’ve observed the pupils are not ready yet, some of the pupils are not listening to her. There came the time that the teacher uses corporal punishment to those hard-headed pupils. The only failure of the teacher is she doesn’t consider the law of readiness and the law of effect. She only focuses on the law of exercise, maybe that’s the reason why some of her pupils are not listening to her. Though the pupils are participating in democratic way but there is an instance that the teacher cannot consider the differences of her pupils. But overall, the teacher is still effective. (Mrs. Rhoda De Jesus, Grade I Joy)

My observation on the drill and review lesson is that the teacher gives higher points to those who get the correct answer. She only gives the drill after the lesson and sometimes it will become homework. The teacher uses the art of questioning in evaluating the outcome of the lesson, with this technique, there is an active interactions between pupils and teacher. The best feature that I observed is that the pupils were possessing a complete freedom in answering the question. I recommend that the teacher also use still picture and other visual materials in teaching the class in order for the pupils to learn more. (Mrs. Vilma Oyao, Grade III Faith)

My observation on the instructional tools is that the teacher uses neat and clean visual aids, she also uses the law of readiness. She really wants her pupils to read fluently. But at this level, the pupils are no ready to learn, some of them are playing and some of them are quarrelling. I recommend that the teacher should use a more colorful and more realistic visual aids.

PERSONAL REFLECTIONS ON THE PORTFOLIO

This portfolio states the learning that I get from our first field study observation. I really learn a lot from our observation, I learned about, how to manage the classroom properly, how to manage 60 pupils and how to adjust myself to the environment of the pupils. On the first day of our observation, we were scolded by the principal because we arrive late in her office, at least in our first day of observation, we learn to be punctual. When I’m starting to observe the room, I felt pity on the teacher most especially if her pupils aren’t listening to her. I came to think if I face this challenge in future, how to handle this challenge. That’s why this observation really helps us to be an effective teacher someday because we already know the real scenario of the classroom, we already know how to adjust in that certain atmosphere.

The school lacks of facilities such as library and laboratory. Through this observation, we learned how to use our resources to cope with this issue. We know how important a library is, because it will become our major references in our topic and a reference also in assignments. And also the laboratory, it is very helpful most especially in the field of science and

Page 12: FS 1 Portfolio

technology. But still the absences of these facilities are not the reason on the interference of the pupils learning. The teacher is able to teach them and to facilitate them without using these facilities.

Indeed, lacking of facilities is not the hindrance of learning, it depends on the teachers ability on how she/he will cope these problems. Furthermore, the teacher should not limit their abilities in the average level on, but they must strive hard to compete with others, because in the hands of teacher lies the future of their learner, so as a teacher they must start honing their pupils in order for them to productive someday.
